My love for John Wick is unapologetic and pure. It knows no boundaries. Keanu Reeves‘ 2014 revenge film is a perfectly crafted breath of fresh air, an action film that actually cares about its action, a thriller that takes its time to let you love its characters, and a totally gonzo portrait of a fascinating and […]

Of the many many TV shows over the years that were about TV shows, Garry Shandling didn't just co-create and star in the very best, he starred in two of the very best. Shandling, who died suddenly today at 66 (as first reported by TMZ), was not only co-creator (with Dennis Klein) and star of the trailblazing HBO comedy The Larry Sanders Show, about the narcissistic, self-loathing host of a late night network talk show, but earlier co-created (with Alan Zweibel) and starred in It's Garry Shandling's Show, an incredibly self-aware sitcom (originally airing on Showtime, and later rerun on Fox) where Sanders broke the fourth wall, went into the studio audience, and had a theme song so meta, it puts Abed on Community to shame: You can trace an entire generation of TV comedy to Larry Sanders. Not only did powerhouse writer/producers like Judd Apatow and Steve Levitan take early jobs there,...

Shot in Cork City last winter, indie feature Dead Dogs will be marking it's World Premiere as part of the upcoming the IndieCork Film Festival. Directed by St. John's College graduate Ian Ruby, the feature is a stark, heartfelt portrait of struggling families, mental illness, and isolation, and a labour of love for all those involved. Shot over the course of thirteen days in and around the city on no budget, it brings in a wealth of local talent, in front of and behind the camera, including actors Karol Mann O'Connor, Irene Kelleher, Shane Doonan, Lochlainn McKenna, and Martina Carroll. Speaking of all the work put into the project, Ruby said, "The film was not funded by any organisation and was made with immense talent, charity and support from our friends and family. It is an incredible to be able to have it World Premiere at IndieCork." The screening takes...

Freaks and Geeks Episode 14 ‘Dead Dogs and Gym Teachers’
Written by Judd Apatow & Bob Nickman
Directed by Judd Apatow
Aired 10/10/2000 on Fox Family
When I think of the long-term potential missed out on Freaks and Geeks, episodes like ‘Dead Dogs and Gym Teachers’ come to the forefront of my memory. It’s an episode about two non-main characters (Bill and Millie) giving unexpected depth to their characters, family situations, and teenage lives. They come in very different forms – one from the death of a family member, and the other from a family gaining one – but they tie back to this similar idea of teenage rebellion, of how forcing ourselves to not deal with something emotional only makes things worse in the long run.
‘Dead Dogs and Gym Teachers’ is almost a what-if proposition; what if Millie were to play the role of Lindsay on the show? Being a much more stringent believer of faith,...

If there was any doubt that The Walking Dead‘s showrunners are serious about thinning the herd and accelerating the pace this season, “Killer Within” sets them to rest, as we say goodbye to (at least) two major characters. Kate, Ricky and Simon attempt a post-mortem on the series’ most devastating episode yet.

On Sept. 25, 1999, NBC debuted a new dramatic comedy about high-schoolers in Michigan circa 1980. The series was equal parts heart and humor, showcasing the best and worst elements of the awkward years between adolescence and adulthood. It was fresh. It was funny. It was deeply personal. It also never had a chance. Freaks and Geeks was moved all over the NBC schedule. As if that was not confusing enough for audiences in the pre-dvr days, episodes also ran out of sequential order, upsetting any sort of linear narrative. The network cancelled the show after just 12 episodes (three more eps were burned...

Dead dogs, dead babies and Jesus on the cross hanging out at Paddy's made their way to Philly this week. Just when you think you're seen it all, Dee, Charlie, Mac, Dennis and Frank take you to the depths of their depravity, as evidenced in "Sweet Dee Gets Audited."
Sweet Dee raked in $30,000 for her surrogate scheme and drove into Paddy's with a shiny baby blue Vespa. Shoving it in the faces of Mac, Charlie, Dennis and Frank, she acted all high and mighty until she got busted by the IRS. And that's when the real fun began.
The guys, tired of Frank making all the decisions in the bar and docking their pay, instituted Paddy's Congress where voting on such bizarre topics as the size of limes and whether or not to have a giant-sized crucifix hanging in the bar dominated the docket.
The thought of Dee "pushing a...

Spanish director Koldo Serra received a lot of love in these pages with his debut film, The Backwoods. A dark thriller starring Gary Oldman and Paddy Considine the film was dumped to DVD and left largely unsupported in North America but it made fans of us here and while Serra has kept busy in television since we've been waiting for his return to features. And here it is. Perros Muertos - literally Dead Dogs - is an upcoming Spanish language horror picture from Serra. Early on I was told that - true to the title - there were zombie dogs in the film somewhere but what we get in the freshly released trailer is children. A bunch of 'em. And they don't look happy.Check the...

It's been a while since we've heard anything on Koldo Serra's Spanish zombie production Dead Dogs (aka Perros Muertos ). In this case, silence has been a good thing, as Serra has been busy getting this puppy finished. Today yields two things: A poster and a trailer, courtesy of our pals across the pond, Aullidos. Serra previously helmed The Backwoods with Gary Oldman. Here, he tackles a story about a small-time juvenile gangster, Cocacolo, who flees south with his gang after a Barcelona bank heist. Double-crossed and abandoned in the middle of nowhere, he join forces with a Spanish family to battle a zombie outbreak, sparked by the locals' consumption of adulterated rapeseed oil. Thursday's (Nov. 11) episode of "The Office" revolves around its characters watching TV -- "Glee," to be exact. Erin (Ellie Kemper) organizes a viewing party on behalf of her boyfriend Gabe (Zach Woods) in an attempt to get people to like him.
The episode (called "Viewing Party") will include some footage from "Glee," and the script got a thumbs-up from the Fox show's producers. And with it, the show will become the latest in a line of TV series that have told stories involving other TV series.
"The Office" has dabbled in this kind of thing before: Dwight (Rainn Wilson) is a devotee of "Battlestar Galactica" and "24," Andy (Ed Helms) watched "Lost" and Kelly (Mindy Kaling) spends an episode undermining Dwight and Jim (John Krasinski) because they didn't go to her "America's Got Talent" finale party.
"Viewing Party," though, will make "Glee" a bigger part of the show's story than any...

"Freaks and Geeks" is now airing on IFC, and we thought we'd take this opportunity to revisit the show that launched a thousand bromance movies. Every week, Matt Singer and Alison Willmore will be offering their thoughts on that night's episode.

Matt: There's one really important aspect of "Freaks and Geeks" that we haven't talked about enough in this column, and that's its use of music. "Dead Dogs and Gym Teachers," a streamlined but very solid episode from Judd Apatow and co-writer Bob Nickman, is a good place to bring it into our discussion because features examples of all the...

Yeah, I’m one of those immature idiots who giggles every time I see the word rapeseed listed on the ingredients of something. It’s really just a form of canola oil that contains all the good-for-your-body omega fatty acids. Apparently in Koldo Serra’s new film Perros Muertos (Dead Dogs), rapeseed oil is a catalyst for a zombie outbreak. Cocacolo is a petty criminal who robs a bank and then flees south. At the same time a family is leaving Northern Spain for the holidays. The group ends up meeting and banding together against a group of zombies that have arisen due to [...]

As far as we're concerned, you can never have too many zombies movies. Except of course for the really low-budget ones where the dead consist of nothing more than people in pale make-up who've been splashed with stage blood. Yeah, you can keep those, thanks.
Variety reports that Backwoods director Koldo Serra (pictured right) will be at the helm for Perros Muertos (translated Dead Dogs), the latest foreign outing with flesheaters for Antonia Nava and Sagrario Santorum's Nava Entertainment.
Dig on the plot crunch -- "Perros" has a petty criminal, Cocacolo, pulling a Barcelona bank job and fleeing south, just as a family leaves Northern Spain for holidays. The motley group join together in the Spanish countryside to battle a zombie outbreak sparked by the locals' consumption of adulterated rapeseed oil.
Yeah, dude. You may wanna avoid rapeseed. That shit can't possibly be good for you. Perros Muertos begins shooting in October.

Another criminal vs zombies movie is on the horizon as Antonia Nava and Sagrario Santorum's Nava Entertainment will produce zombie actioner Perros Muertos (Dead Dogs), directed by Koldo Serra (Backwoods). Perros has a petty criminal, Cocacolo, pulling a Barcelona bank job and fleeing south, just as a family leaves Northern Spain for holidays. The motley group join together in the Spanish countryside to battle a zombie outbreak sparked by the locals' consumption of adulterated rapeseed oil. The themes are very similar to that of the French bloodfest The Horde, which fails because you need your lead characters to be likable. Hopefully Perros takes note. Shooting commences in October. Nava has a rich history formerly as he headed international co-productions at Barcelona's Filmax, producing Brad Anderson's The Machinist and Transsiberian, Jaume Balaguero's Fragile and Backwoods.

Zombies are about to run amok overseas. Koldo Serra is getting behind the camera for Perros Muertos ( Dead Dogs ), an undead actioner that puts a unique spin on its zombie origins. According to Variety, the story follows a criminal on the run who joins a family leaving for the holidays. They wind up in a fight for their lives against an undead menace that stems from the "locals' consumption of adulterated rapeseed oil." Nava Entertainment will produce. Serra directed the 2008 Straw Dogs -esque The Backwoods with Gary Oldman. The film, while flawed in story, showed promise in Serra's vision.

You can scarcely swing a dead cat lately without hitting some kind of best-of-the-decade list (even though, technically, the first decade of the 21st century doesn't end till next year).
Well, here comes another one. Rather than try to construct another best-shows-of-the-'00s list, though -- something that's already been done here, there and everywhere -- I decided to focus on individual episodes from 2000-09. Are these the flat-out "best" episodes of television over the past 10 years? Probably not. But these are the ones that stick with me, that I can still remember not just for brilliant lines or beautifully constructed plots, but for how I actually felt while watching them. They are, simply, my favorites.
Here's my list, in no particular order. What's yours?
