Even decades after its release, The Lord of the Rings films are still the highwater mark for quality fantasy content. Whether it's in film or television, few other fantasy universes have ever come close to matching its scale and spectacle, it's lovable characters or incredible worldbuilding. Still, anime has had a thriving fantasy genre for decades now and generated some true classics.

Over the years, anime has created quality fantasy content for every kind of viewer. Whether they prefer high fantasy or gritty and grimdark, or if they like straightforward epics or comedies, there's something for everyone. They might not be quite as good as The Lord of the Rings, but they'll still provide viewers with several fun nights of enjoyment.

Dungeons & Dragons enthusiast and action movie superstar Vin Diesel combined his two favorite things for this panned fantasy action movie, and it’s coming to free streaming. Released back in 2015, The Last Witch Hunter takes inspiration from a character that Diesel himself made for his Dungeons & Dragons campaign, and follows Kaulder, who manages to slay the all-powerful Witch Queen some 800 years ago. But, before her death, she curses the warrior with immortality, separating him from his beloved wife and daughter in the afterlife.

The Last Witch Hunter is directed by Breck Eisner and written by Cory Goodman, Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless. The fantasy action flick stars Rose Leslie, Elijah Wood, Michael Caine, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, and Julie Engelbrecht alongside Diesel, and is all set to land on free streaming platform Tubi on April 1. Actor Jan Schwieterman, whose roles memorably included playing the villain in the Nickelodeon movie Good Burger, has died. He was 52 years old.

According to an obituary shared by the family, Schwieterman died on Friday, Feb. 28, 2025, at Mercy Hospital in Washington, Missouri. The late actor's brother, Chad Schwieterman, announced his sibling's passing in a post on Facebook, including some photos of Schwieterman posing with Chad and other family members. Major news outlets have now begun reporting on the passing, which was revealed by his brother to be from cancer.

"It is with a heavy heart that I share the passing of my brother, Jan (Jp) Schwieterman," Chad's post stated. "He recently found out he had an aggressive form of stage 4 cancer and passed yesterday evening. Please keep our family in your thoughts and prayers as we navigate this difficult time. Rest in peace, brother. We love you and miss you."

Today, The Wrap (via SFFGazette.com) has revealed that Percy Jackson and the Olympians showrunners Jonathan E. Steinberg and Dan Shotz are in talks to write, produce, and serve as showrunners for a new live-action TV series.

Developed by 20th Century TV, the reboot will stream on Disney+.

Go, go, Power Rangers — all the way to Disney+. At least, that is the hope of the Mouse House, which is currently eyeing an adaptation of the Mighty Morphin' superheroes for the small screen. According to a new, exclusive report from TheWrap, it is said that Percy Jackson and the Olympian showrunners Jonathan E. Steinberg and Dan Shotz are in talks to write, showrun, and produce a new live-action series for Disney+.

The duo are hoping to reinvent the franchise for a new generation of fans while also still engaging with those — mostly adults — who grew up with and already love the world of Hasbro and Saban's "Super Sentai" (as they were originally known in Japan). Hasbro, the company that now owns the rights to the characters, will also be producing the series.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians showrunners Jonathan E. Steinberg and Dan Shotz are in talks with Disney+ to helm a live-action Power Rangers television series. The first entry in Saban's Power Rangers franchise was the original 1990s TV series The Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers, which followed a group of five teenagers with attitude who gain the ability to morph into superpowered heroes. With 30 seasons of continuity on TV, the last attempt to reboot Power Rangers in 2017 failed at the box office.

Now, TheWrap has reported that Disney+'s Percy Jackson team is being eyed for aPower Rangers live-action series. Based on Rick Rordian's fantasy children's books, Steinberg and Shotz have led Percy Jackson and the Olympians since its premiere in 2023. The award-winning Greek mythology series has been praised for its faithfulness to Riordan's work, and has already been renewed for season 3 ahead of season 2's late 2025 premiere.

Ah, The Twins. Probably the most polarizing of the Star Wars Visions shorts. From what I gather from various reactions, people either love this one or it’s their least favorite. There’s very little in between. In the history of The CW’s Riverdale creating some of the most bonkers moments of television, fans will always tout the first season as its best. Premiering in 2017, the young adult drama takes the classic characters from Archie Comics and puts them in a nostalgic and Lynchian atmosphere while they try to get through the trials of high school. Romance and family problems run rampant, but that wasn’t the only draw to the series. The first episode revolves around the death of Jason Blossom, twin to Cheryl and son of the richest family in town.

As teens are wont to do, these characters take it upon themselves to solve the murder, which brings them to red herrings and false confessions galore.

If you’ve been anywhere near YouTube or Spotify in the last year, you probably know they’re both trying very hard to make video podcasts happen. Podcasting in general has experienced a boom since the start of the Covid pandemic, but video podcasts are what host platforms are really interested in, because video ad spots are more lucrative than audio-only ads.

Both YouTube and Spotify have seen some notable traction with video podcasts, but so far, the format doesn’t appear to have quite taken off.

According to the latest study from Transistor, a podcast hosting and monetization platform, Gen Z “overwhelmingly chooses audio-only formats” when it comes to podcasts.

76% of Gen Z’ers involved in Transistor’s study said they primarily listen to audio podcasts, while 18% said they listen to a mix of audio and video. Only 6% said they primarily watch video podcasts.

In 2023, after many years in development, a new adaptation of the role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons came out via Paramount Pictures, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. Unfortunately, the movie underperformed despite positive reviews.

The adaptation was set in the Forgotten Realms and was a standalone, with no connections to the previous Dungeons & Dragons film trilogy released between 2000 and 2012. The film had been in production since 2013 at different studios, including Warner Bros. and Paramount Pictures, and with different writers and directors. Although Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves was not a big hit, since it came out, the fantasy heist comedy has steadily attracted interest on streaming, and is now back in the charts, per Tudum.

Assassin's Creed is one of the worst video game adaptations of all time, but it has turned into a streaming hit on Max. The 2016 flop starred Michael Fassbender, who was red-hot coming off two excellent X-Men prequels, Marion Cotillard (Inception), and Jeremy Irons (who was in the terrible adaptation of Dungeons and Dragons). It's currently at number two on Max's Top 10 movie list in the United States, and is also in the Top 10 in a few countries worldwide.

The movie is a film adaptation by director Justin Kurzel (The Snowtown Murders) and is based on the popular video game series and follows Cal Lynch / Aguilar (Fassbender), who travels back in time to learn how to be an assassin from his ancestors so he can fight the Templar Knights in the present day. The film is as ridiculous as it sounds, despite the incredible talent appearing on the screen.

The original G.I. Joe toyline was conceived in 1963 by designer Stanley Weston and was meant to serve as a more "masculine" counterpart to the female dolls designed for girls. Indeed, the word "doll" was used by marketers to describe babies or dress-up miniature women, not soldiers or men of action. Hasbro came up with the term "action figure" to refer to its G.I. Joes, and the term stuck. For several generations, children's toys were heavily gendered along those lines, with "girl" toys encouraging motherhood, domesticity, and fashion, while "boy" toys encouraged combat and violence.

By 1982, the G.I. Joe brand had become moribund and was in need of a sprucing up. A new line of toys was launched under the new name G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero. These figures were only 3.75 inches high (the older ones were 12 inches) and were composed of 11 cartoony characters. They were American soldiers ... kind of.

Stardew Valleyand Baldur's Gate 3 fans have plenty to celebrate as a talented modder has brought together the two universes. While the normally brutal world of Dungeons & Dragons may seem at odds with the wholesome energy of ConcernedApe's farming RPG, there's certainly a decent amount of overlap between the communities. This is in no small part due to how Stardew Valley and Baldur's Gate 3 place a great deal of emphasis on relationships, both romantic and platonic, so it stands to reason that a crossover would eventually happen.

Shared on Nexus Mods, the appropriately titled "Baldur's Village" is more than a simple add-on that drops a handful of new characters into Pelican Valley: It's close to a full expansion. The mod adds an entire village to Stardew Valley that houses over 20 NPCs, all of whom Baldur's Gate 3 fans will recognize, as well as extra shops, additional special items, and even dynamic events.

Even in the 21st century, fanatics still routinely accuse innocuous pop-culture properties of colluding with the Prince of Darkness, be it the 2024 Olympics’ opening ceremony, the Minions or the songs of Pat Benatar.

Just about everyone knows what it is, and lots of people are quite sure that a role-playing game that requires loads of imagination and a considerable time commitment is not for them -- although, as "Freaks and Geeks" taught us, these folks who think they're anti-d&d are only one campaign away from becoming total converts. This overwhelmingly negative perception some people hold of D&d is likely a big reason why movies based on the game have failed to take off. There's also the fact that the first attempt, 2000's "Dungeons & Dragons," was an unwatchable heap of crap helmed by the shockingly untalented Courtney Solomon. That didn't help at all.

Chris Avellone is the mastermind behind many record-breaking RPGs. He’s known for his work on games such as Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Planescape: Torment, and most crucially, the Fallout series. It won’t be a stretch to say that the post-apocalyptic series wouldn’t have achieved the heights it did without Avellone.

There Was No Honor Among Thieves Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves (2023)

Despite much audience appreciation for an incredible Dungeons & Dragons film, Honor Among Thieves bombed at the box office. The film failed to garner mass audience appeal despite the name recognition in the title. Despite earning more than its budget, the film needed much more to break even.

Daredevil: Born Again's premiere pleased fans of the Netflix series by reuniting Matt Murdock, Karen Page, and Foggy Nelson in the opening scenes. Episode 1 also confirmed Foggy's story arc would be tragic and heartbreaking.

It's been a wild ride for Deborah Ann Woll leading up to Daredevil: Born Again's premiere. Woll feared for Karen Page's arc after the Netflix original was canceled, even more so during the reboot show's development. In a push to build a brand-new storyline for Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox), Page was sidelined in the early scripts along with Franklin "Foggy" Nelson (Elden Henson). Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Woll said it was a difficult, uncertain time in her career.

Dungeons & Dragons filmmakers John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein have been drafted in to write the screenplay for a Monopoly film.

Last time we heard about plans to bring the board game Monopoly to the screen, Margot Robbie’s Luckychap production company had come aboard. This latest effort to adapt the game began when Lionsgate acquired Entertainment One from Hasbro in late 2023, with the Monopoly rights being part of that deal.

Luckychap was behind Barbie, a film which managed to both venerate and subvert Mattel’s toy doll line, so Lionsgate likely moved Monopoly onto the fast track. All in the hope that Robbie and her fellow collaborators could bottle the same lightning twice.

In any form of storytelling, there are bound to be clichés or tropes to ground the narrative within the realm of believability. The Lord of the Rings, based on J. R. R. Tolkien's eponymous novels, is no exception. That said, many fans have chosen to overlook Lord of the Ring's clichés, which include numerous well-known character archetypes in addition to countless other tropes related to worldbuilding.

Considering that the original story is now over seventy years old, it makes sense to suggest that Lord of the Rings was one of the first major novel series to popularize certain archetypes. Character clichés seen in Tolkien's universe have influenced much of the fantasy genre, most notably Dungeons & Dragons and video games like World of Warcraft. The demand for a Dungeons & Dragons sequel movie has surged following the surprise success of Honor Among Thieves after its recent release on Netflix.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves starring Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Rege-Jean Page, and Hugh Grant was released exclusively in theaters in 2023. 

The film follows a group of unlikely heroes led by a bard and a barbarian on a mission to steal a powerful relic, only to face dark forces. The movie arrived on Netflix in the US on February 26, 2025, and fans are already eager for a potential sequel.

In an unexpected crossover, four WWE Superstars are stepping away from the ring and into the realm of tabletop role-playing. Dimension 20: Titan Takedown, a new five-episode mini-series from Dropout, will feature Bayley, Chelsea Green, Xavier Woods, and Kofi Kingston trading body slams for dice rolls as they embark on a Dungeons & Dragons adventure unlike any before. The series will premiere on April 2, just a few weeks ahead of WrestleMania 41 in Las Vegas, and will be hosted by Dimension 20’sBrennan Lee Mulligan.

Four WWE superstars are stepping outside the squared circle and into the dome. Dropout has released the first trailer for “Dimension 20: Titan Takedown,” a long-rumored crossover season featuring professional wrestlers from the WWE.

Bayley, Women’s United States Champion Chelsea Green, Xavier Woods and Kofi Kingston will enter the dome for a five-part side quest guided by D20’s intrepid game master, Brennan Lee Mulligan. The new season will premiere April 2, just three short weeks away from Wrestlemania.

According to a press release, the season is set in ancient Athens, and features the newly minted “righteous wrestlers” as they roll the dice and fight for glory in the “fabled” Titan Takedown, a “wrestling event of epic proportions.”

In December, Jake Johnson and Gareth Reynolds announced that their advice podcast, We’re Here to Help, would be coming to a temporary end. The duo had released more than 140 episodes, sometimes devoting five hours a day to recording, and it became unsustainable. Reynolds, a touring comedian, was often Zooming in from the road and Johnson was in the midst of producing a new movie. It made sense to hit pause.

Back in the '80s, a wave of paranoia about Satan worshipers permeated the public consciousness, known as "Satanic Panic." Few if any of the claims of abuse and recruitment by Satanic cults were true, but that didn’t stop the public from turning a wary eye on more niche forms of entertainment like Dungeons & Dragons and heavy metal music. While there can be a lot of “Satanic” imagery and lyrics in heavy metal, the idea that listening to it will turn you into a slave of Lucifer himself clearly isn’t true – but it might be funny if it was. That’s the premise of 2015's Deathgasm, a New Zealand horror comedy from Jason Lei Howden, director of Guns Akimbo.

While Vin Diesel remains synonymous with his Fast and Furious film series, some of his other action-packed efforts continue to fly under the radar. One such effort is his 2015 fantasy film, The Last Witch Hunter, which is set to call Peacock home very soon.

Peacock confirmed that The Last Witch Hunter will be one of many new movies to grace its platform when it debuts on Mar. 1. The film has largely been available for rent or purchase on various digital platforms, including Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV.
