Daniel Brühl is set to star as late fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld in “Kaiser Karl,” the anticipated Disney+ original series which Gaumont (“Lupin”) is currently producing. The show is currently shooting in France, Monaco and Italy.

The six-part series will chronicle the rise of Karl Lagerfeld through the world of 1970s Parisian high fashion. In 1972, a 38-year-old Karl Lagerfeld aspired to become the most famous French fashion designer, at a time when Yves Saint Laurent reigned supreme. Lagerfeld went on to become the head designer and creative director of Chanel, Fendi and his own label.

The series will also explore the rivalry between Lagerfeld and Yves Saint Laurent’s partner Pierre Berge, as well as his love story with Jacques de Bascher.

Triawan Munaf, chairman of the Indonesian Agency for Creative Economy (Bekraf) was on hand on Monday for the opening of the Bali International Film Festival (Balinale). His presence was intended as a sign that Indonesia, Asia’s sleeping giant as a film player, is rousing itself.

It was also an endorsement of the indie festival which, in its 12th year, is adding industry functions and seeking relevance far away from capital city, Jakarta.

Hosted in two Cinemaxx multiplexes in Denpasar and Kuta, the festival aims to reach different strands of Bali’s population, natives, long-term resident expatriates, and passing tourists.

A showcase of films by Roland Joffe is arguably the highlight of the event. The British director was a key figure at the BalinaleX industry conference on Sunday and is on hand through the week to present his multi-Oscar winning “The Killing Fields,” and Palme d’Or winner “The Mission.

This year’s Cannes Film Festival has announced their pick for President of their Un Certain Regard jury — Cannes regular and American icon, actress Uma Thurman.

Per an official statement from the festival, “In a career spanning more than 20 years, the American actress has made some daring choices and enjoyed taking risks. She made her debut aged 17, in Stephen Frears’ ‘Dangerous Liaisons’ and in Terry Gilliam’s ‘The Adventures of Baron Munchausen.’ She became Quentin Tarantino’s muse, playing in ‘Pulp Fiction’ (Palme d’or winner, 1994) and in ‘Kill Bill’ (volumes 1 & 2), both presented at the Festival de Cannes. Since then, Uma Thurman has worked with many directors, including Andrew Niccol (‘Gattaca’); Woody Allen (‘Sweet and Lowdown’); Roland Joffé (‘Vatel’) and Ethan Hawke (‘Chelsea Walls’). She recently joined the cast of Lars von Trier’s new project, ‘The House that Jack Built,’ alongside Matt Dillon and Bruno Ganz.”

Polish film festival sets competition juries; Roland Joffe to preside over main competition.

Camerimage (Nov 15-22), the International Film Festival of the Art of Cinematography, has set an impressive roster of jurors for its various competition categories.

The Killing Fields director Roland Joffe will preside over the main competition jury, which incldues cinematographers Christian Berger and Manuel Alberto Claro.

Caleb Deschanel has been appointed president of the Polish Films Competition.

The war movie stars Sam Waterston (TV’s Law & Order), John Malkovich (Red) and Haing S. Ngor (The Dragon Gate) and is based on the true events of the 1975 takeover of Cambodia by Khmer Rouge, the terrorist government that killed nearly 3 million people.

Waterston plays Pulitzer Prize-winning New York Times reporter Sydney Schanberg, who stays in Cambodia after the government falls and convinces his friend and translator Dith Pran (Ngor) to stay too to report on the bloodbath and the U.S. role in precipitating the horror.

British stage, film and television actor Richard Griffiths died yesterday due to complications in the aftermath of heart surgery at Coventry hospital. He was 65 years old. Though best remembered for his performance as Uncle Vernon in the Harry Potter flicks, Griffiths was a well-respected name on the British stage, having won a number of awards ( Tony. With the jury still out on where this year's Berlin lineup will rate on the Dieter meter, attention is beginning to focus on the selection for the Festival de Cannes.

The Riviera event marks its 60th anniversary when it unspools May 16-27, suggesting fest president Gilles Jacob will want to inject some extra glitz. But artistic director Thierry Fremaux said the landmark will not influence his choice of movies for Competition.

After the poor reception given to last year's opener The Da Vinci Code, pressure is on to find a more crowd-pleasing title. One option under consideration is the hugely ambitious documentary "earth," which offers a dazzling look at natural life on our planet.

"We're already speaking to Cannes about being the opening film. We're sending an unfinished mix to Cannes at the end of February," said Sophokles Tasioulis of Greenlight Media, who co-produced the movie with the BBC. The movie is distributed in France by Gaumont, which has previously handled opening-night duties with The Fifth Element and Vatel.

A more conventional contender is Ocean's Thirteen from Palme d'Or winner Steven Soderbergh. And one that would allow for a top-flight red carpet gala given the Warner Bros. picture's all-star cast headed by George Clooney, Matt Damon, Brad Pitt and Al Pacino.

Warner's Iraq-themed movie The Valley of Elah written and directed by Paul Haggis starring Tommy Lee Jones, Charlize Theron and James Franco is also in the running. "It's not out of the question," said a source.

Although it is still too early for titles to have received any locked-down slots, Fremaux looks to have a good choice of titles from both the U.S. and France.

Among the former is Cannes golden boy Quentin Tarantino's exploitation double-feature Grind House, co-directed by Robert Rodriguez.

Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End is one possible for out of Competition. Paramount Pictures' fantasy adventure Stardust, starring Claire Danes, Robert De Niro, Sienna Miller and Michelle Pfeiffer, may also show up.

PARIS -- ARP, France's influential body of writers, directors and producers, said Tuesday that it has re-elected director-writer Pierre Jolivet as president. He has headed the organization since 1999. Jolivet was elected at a board meeting June 24, ARP said. Directors Claude Lelouch, Gerard Krawczyk and Bertrand Van Effenterre were elected vps at the meeting. Claude Berri, who heads the French Cinematheque, has been named honorary president. The association's management has been enlarged to include two new members -- writer-directors Christophe Barratier, whose Les Choristes (The Choristers) has been a runaway French hit this year, and Jeanne Labrune (Vatel). The body's administrative council of 13 members includes French directors Alain Corneau, Constantin Costa-Gavras, Claude Miller, Coline Serreau and Unifrance's president, producer Margaret Menegoz.

Unfortunately, the postscreening consensus around the film was barely more favorable than its ill-starred predecessor, which was roundly panned at the time. Even many French in the audience failed to appreciate the new take on the subject, with the film meeting a distinctly muted response as the credits rolled. The buildup had looked promising enough as attendees arrived at the foot of the Palais steps on a balmy Riviera evening to the heaving rhythm of Latino drums. The film's official party shunned limousines to take the short stroll from the Majestic Hotel to the Palais des Festivals. Producer Luc Besson and the movie's stars, Vincent Perez and Penelope Cruz, pushed through the crowds before climbing the famed red-carpeted steps to the auditorium. But the atmosphere in the crowd outside the Palais failed to reach the boiling point, no doubt because of the nonappearance of Cruz's boyfriend, Tom Cruise.

Uma Thurman started smoking again in Cannes because she couldn't handle the pressure of having two films opening there. The Beautiful Girls (1996) star admits she gave up the addictive drug three years ago, but decided to light up again while at the huge film festival. She says, "The pressure, the excitement and the craziness of it all. I'm going to stop when I get home." The actress had two films open at the festival this year, Vatel (2000) and Golden Bowl, The (2000).
