Christopher Nolan is one of the most respected directors of the 21st century. While he technically made his debut with Following in 1998, Nolan's breakout work is largely considered to be Memento, which was released in 2000. This movie earned Nolan his first Oscar nomination, for Best Original Screenplay, based on the script he co-wrote with his brother Jonathan Nolan. Memento is perhaps one of Nolan's most classic examples of playing with time as a storytelling device, a motif that would become a signature tool throughout his work.
Memento was well-received, and Nolan's filmography has developed growing clout over the years. The director's first movie to be nominated for Best Picture ended up being Inception. From there, multiple other Nolan films would be nominated for Oscars, including Dunkirk and Oppenheimer. The latter film would go on to become Nolan's first movie to win Best Picture, and also earned the auteur an award for Best Director.

For more than two decades, Jeff Probst has been the proud face of Survivor. While the show is known for its thrilling factor, it was the host who truly made it popular. But behind the scenes, he was facing a personal battle that nobody knew about. This battle somewhat mirrored Christopher Nolan’s psychological thriller Memento.

And just like in the movie, Probst had a condition that severely affected his short-term memory, causing him to forget conversations, important details, and even some of his everyday moments.

Among the world-renowned filmmakers, Quentin Tarantino is one name that comes with instant recognition among anyone who has the slightest interest in cinema. Tarantino came into the world on March 27, 1963, in Knoxville, Tennessee, and gained both serious acclaim and a devoted fanbase through his storytelling methods.
Tarantino achieved his fame by going against typical standards. He also stands apart from his peers since he didn’t attend film school and lacked industry-related family ties. He gained knowledge about films by working at a video store that provided him access to a collection of different genres and filmmaking styles. His personal study gave him an independent outlook that separated his storytelling methods.

He has won many awards, including two Academy Awards, two BAFTA Awards, and three Golden Globe Awards. The director’s works bring new meaning to contemporary filmmaking.

If you’re a fan of cinema, you’ll know the name Christopher Nolan. The director is one of the very few modern filmmakers who still gets to bring bold, creative visions to life on a blockbuster scale. The reigning champ of the intellectual box office hit, Nolan has enjoyed a storied career in Hollywood thanks to his consistency in producing pulse-pounding cinema that also has the capacity to make you think. His obsession with the theme of time, invisible special effects, and multi-layered plot structures have dazzled film viewers for decades at this point.
Nolan studied English Literature, believe it or not, at University College London. While at university, he was the president of the Film Society and met his wife and future producing partner, Emma Thomas, on campus. His first feature film was 1998’s “Following,” but his career really took off with the groundbreaking “Memento” (2000). The Guy Pearce...

It’s time to look at the work of one of the greatest directors of our generation: Christopher Nolan. How big is Nolan these days? Interstellar, a movie which was never among the director’s top grossers, hit IMAX screens last week for its tenth anniversary, and screenings have been selling out constantly. The fact is – Nolan makes movies that belong on the big-screen, and he’s one of the few directors who’s arguably become his own franchise. For proof of that, one need only look at the fact that he’s planning a new movie, and the cast is jampacked with A-listers, because Everyone wants to work with Nolan.
A caveat – our Christopher Nolan movies ranked list is just one person’s opinion, and his work is divisive. Everyone has their favourites (and least favourites), so I’m hoping this ranking will open up some discussion in the comments below.

David Cronenberg has said that his new film The Shrouds – which has been making the festival rounds lately (you can read what JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray thought of it Here) – was originally intended to be a Netflix TV series, but the streamer dropped it after paying him to write the pilot episode. So a feature film it is, and Sideshow and Janus Films have acquired all U.S. distribution rights to the film, with their plan being to give it a theatrical release next month. The Shrouds will be reaching theatres in New York and Los Angeles on April 18th, then will expand nationwide on April 25th. With those dates right around the corner, a trailer has dropped online and can be seen in the embed above.

The Dark Knight trilogy actor Gary Oldman recalls the note Christopher Nolan gave him that is one of the best he's received in his career. Coming off of successes like Memento (2000) and Insomnia (2002), Nolan entered the world of comic book adaptations with Batman Begins in 2005. Christian Bale played the role of Batman, aka Bruce Wayne, throughout Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy, with Oldman playing a prominent role as ally Jim Gordon, who eventually becomes Police Commissioner in The Dark Knight (2008).
During a recent interview with The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Oldman recalls that filming one scene for The Dark Knight trilogy resulted in Nolan giving him one of the best notes he has ever received from a director. The note was surprisingly simple, with the director simply telling Oldman that there is more at stake for Gordon in the scene in question. Check out Oldman and Colbert's exchange below:

Jon Bernthal is one of the greatest - and most underrated - actors working today. Best known for playing The Punisher among comic book fans, the Daredevil: Born Again star has delivered stellar performances in everything from The Bear to The Wolf of Wall Street and The Many Saints of Newark.
Now, he's geared up for Christopher Nolan's new movie The Odyssey. This retelling of the epic poem composed by Homer in the 8th Century also stars the McU's Spider-Man, Tom Holland, and both actors have been spotted in costume today.
While we believe the latter is playing Telemachus, the son of Odysseus, after some other recent images, there's no word on who Bernthal might be bringing to life in the fantasy epic.
We're used to seeing Bernthal with a beard, but the bald head is new and he certainly wouldn't be mistaken for Frank Castle right now. Daredevil: Born Again...

After The Matrix made Carrie-Anne Moss a household name, she was offered a wave of major Hollywood roles. However, at the time, the actor opted to turn them down.
Speaking to The Independent, Moss said she decided to step away from acting to focus on raising her family. "After The Matrix was such a big deal, I took a big, big break to have children and be with them," she said. "I remember being torn, having a little twinge like, 'Gosh, I’m getting offered such great things. That would be such a huge deal.' And I was holding my baby in my arms, and I remember thinking, 'At the end of my life, will it matter to me that I have another movie on my résumé? Or will it matter to me that I held my baby?' And I instantly thought, no. It was just a no-brainer.

Stars: Douglas Smith, Kimberly-Sue Murray, Carrie-Anne Moss, Frank Grillo, Jonathan Cherry | Written and Directed by Lowell Dean
Die Alone is the most recent film from Saskatchewan-based filmmaker Lowell Dean. If you’ve heard of him, it’s probably because of the over-the-top genre comedies WolfCop and Another WolfCop. But he’s done several other films, including the zombie film 13 Eerie and the post-apocalyptic action film SuperGrid, which I was lucky enough to catch along with a Q&a session with him at the Saskatoon Fantastic Film Festival a few years back.
Both zombies and a post-apocalyptic setting return in Die Alone, but it’s not a typical tale of the zombie apocalypse, although that isn’t easy to tell from the opening scenes. Ethan and his girlfriend Emma were heading to his cabin when their car crashed. Ethan wakes up to find Emma and most of his memories, are missing.

Did You Know Anora & The Brutalist’s Numbers Took Over A Major Christopher Nolan Thriller At The Bo? ( Photo Credit – Instagram )
As Anora director Sean Baker wrapped the 97th Academy Awards ceremony, seizing his record fourth statuette of the night, he roared, “Long live independent cinema” — a mantra that couldn’t have resounded better outside a ceremony exalting indie films over studio juggernauts and streaming titans.
Anora clinched five wins, The Brutalist nabbed three, and A Real Pain, Flow, and others—all original films without the tag of sequel, remake, biography, or adaptation attached to them—galvanized the evening with one award each. Their victories now incite a box office rush, unlike anything the majors could muster.
Even months after its digital release, Anora and The Brutalist saw theater admissions soar post-Oscar night. Anora’s Monday take vaulted over 400% from the prior week, Tuesday’s surge past 350%, pushing its domestic...

Our hero Ethan is contending with a strange kind of cyclical amnesia that makes dealing with the flesh-eating undead a good deal harder
As this highly derivative but mildly absorbing Canadian horror thriller kicks off, we meet Ethan (Douglas Smith), a young man seemingly on the verge of killing himself. He looks out over a picturesque stretch of Saskatchewan landscape bathed in magic-hour glow before we cut to a welter of confusing, often blood-soaked flashbacks (or flashforwards) – and his voiceover then explains that although his memory doesn’t work so well, he’d rather not remember most of his life anyway. That’s because unfortunate Ethan is suffering from a kind of cyclical amnesia, not unlike the disorder that bedevilled Guy Pearce’s character in Memento, which compels him to keep reintroducing himself to people he’s met many times before. This is a particularly dangerous condition to have because...

Jackman and Bale lead the stacked cast, which also includes the talents of Nolan movie regular Michael Caine, Scarlett Johansson, Rebecca Hall, Piper Perabo, Samantha Mahurin, Andy Serkis, and the legendary David Bowie as Nikola Tesla. Nolan co-wrote the script alongside his brother, Jonathan, who would serve as a writer on several of his other movies.

These days, Christopher Nolan is busy dominating the box office and riding high off making the first blockbuster to win Best Picture in 20 years. But back in 2000, he was barely an up-and-coming director. With just one self-funded film to his name (1998's "Following"), the director finally had a modest budget from an independent film studio and set to work turning his brother Jonathan's short story idea into a film.
In Jonathan's original story, "Memento Mori," a man named Earl suffers from anterograde amnesia and uses notes and tattoos to help his future self remember key information about his life, with the ultimate goal of finding the mystery individual responsible for murdering his wife. When working on the screenplay adaptation, however, Christopher Nolan came up with the idea to tell part of the narrative in reverse, thereby ensuring his film version,...

Hollywood has seen a lot of actors with failed marriages, and Guy Pearce’s is yet another name on the list. Tying the knot back in 1997, the now-57-year-old actor, with hits like Memento (2000), The Brutalist (2024), and L.A. Confidential (1997) on his resume, he found himself and his wife, Kate Mestitz, undergoing a divorce around 18 years later.

But throughout the time that they were together, the actor could sincerely admit that she was “the greatest love of my life,” as he recently claimed, years after their divorce. In fact, the Marvel actor had gone through so much in his life with his ex-wife and ostensibly found such a comfortable and safe place with her that he even let out his Kevin Spacey fears to her.

Christopher Nolan has become known for crafting films of immense scale that make powerful emotional statements, but he’s also a master of classic cinematic suspense. The acclaimed director often structures his films with unconventional timelines and perspectives, allowing him to shock the audience with ingenious plot twists that would make M. Night Shyamalan jealous. The inverted chronology of Memento and the questioning of reality in Inception lead to Nolan’s most famous surprise endings, but one of his less high profile works is even more shocking. The Prestige packs in more delightful swerves than any of Nolan’s other films, and the period piece’s final twist stands as arguably the most mind-blowing and satisfying in his filmography.

Image Source: Warner Bros Christopher Nolan is no stranger to pushing the boundaries of cinematic storytelling. Over the years, he has redefined what movies can achieve with groundbreaking works like Memento, The Dark Knight Trilogy, Interstellar, Tenet, and his latest historical opus, Oppenheimer. Known for his intricate plots, philosophical depth, and eye-popping visuals, Nolan’s films challenge audiences to rethink time, reality, and human connection. Yet, even among this stellar filmography, one title stands out as the purest example of his genius—Inception. Released in 2010, this masterpiece takes viewers on a mind-bending trip through layered dreamscapes. Its daring concept of “dreams within dreams,” coupled with stunning effects, Hans Zimmer’s iconic score, and an ambiguous ending that sparked endless debate, all cemented Inception as a modern classic. But what did Nolan himself think about creating this cinematic puzzle box? He once shared that Inception was one of his boldest risks as a filmmaker.

Ridley Scott is pressing ahead with The Dog Stars, adding Margaret Qualley, Josh Brolin and Guy Pearce to the cast.
During his press tour for Gladiator II, Ridley Scott revealed to Film Stories that a sci-fi project had been added to his upcoming slate, that was going to be a quick reunion with Paul Mescal. However, it would later emerge that Mescal had left the project because of his commitment to playing one of the Fab Four in Sam Mendes’ upcoming films based on The Beatles.
Still, the project is The Dog Stars, and it’s coming next from the bearded one.

Ridley Scott’s pandemic thriller, The Dog Stars, adds some significant star power today with Margaret Qualley, Josh Brolin, and Guy Pearce joining Jacob Elordi for an epic that finds a civilian pilot living a lonely life on an abandoned Colorado airbase with his dog and a hard-as-nails ex-marine. When a band of scavengers called The Reapers invades their space, Hig and his compatriots must prepare for battle.
The Dog Stars hails from 20th Century Studios and is based on the 2012 novel by Peter Heller (Burn, The River, The Painter, The Last Ranger). Initially, Scott was reteaming with Gladiator II star Paul Mescal for The Dog Stars, but scheduling conflicts with his part in Sam Mendes’ Beatles anthology kept him from participating. Sources say Mescal plays Paul McCartney in Mendes’ upcoming film, making him essential to the project.
Here’s a synopsis of Heller’s novel:

For lifelong cinephiles, the kinds of folks determined to experience as many movies as the medium has to offer before they hit the soil, revisits are an extravagance. Sometimes, they're essential. Jean-Luc Godard's films are dense with ideas and, especially later in his career, visual information. You leave the first viewing with merely an impression of what he's saying, but the meat of his thesis doesn't completely shake out until a second or perhaps third go-round. Meanwhile, a film like "Memento," with its fractured narrative told from the perspective of an amnesiac, might not make total sense until you retrace Leonard Shelby's journey on a subsequent watch.
And then there are movies we return to over and over because they never fail to work their rare magic. Dating back to my early childhood, I've seen Steven Spielberg's "Jaws...

Leonard Shelby can try to remember Sammy Jankis all he wants, but Guy Pearce would truly like to forget Memento. Despite Christopher Nolan’s film being a breakout for both the star and its director, Pearce insists he gives an absolutely terrible performance in it, even too bad to forget.
Speaking with The Times, Guy Pearce — who earned his share of acclaim for Memento, although most went to Nolan’s screenplay – admitted that his performance as the tattooed amnesiac is one he genuinely despises and it stands as the chief reason why he hasn’t worked with the director since. “…I’m having an existential crisis. I watched Memento the other day and I’m still depressed. I’m sh*t in that movie. In terms of modern filmmaking, it's hard to do better than Christopher Nolan. Even dating back to his early works such as "The Prestige" and "Memento," it was clear that this man was something special. Everyone is going to have their favorites and yes, to an extent, film is a subjective medium. That said, Nolan's broad critical acclaim coupled with his ability to deliver a commercial hit makes him unrivaled in the 2000s. Rather quantifiably, he has proven himself to be the most consistently bankable director working in Hollywood today, and one pretty eye-popping stat proves it.
Nolan had a run from 2008 to 2017 that was, in a word, ridiculous. That run includes the $1 billion beloved blockbuster smash "The Dark Knight," his mind-bending thriller "Inception," DC's one-time highest-grossing movie ever "The Dark Knight Rises," the ambitious modern sci-fi classic "Interstellar," and...

An actor with a unanimous approval rating, we always wondered what ever happened to Guy Pearceafter all these years. While Hollywood seemed to have abandoned him, Brady Corbet never forgot about his talents. Of all The Brutalist's accomplishments, its most valuable is its confirmation of Pearce's brilliance as an actor. Of course, anyone who has seen Mementois well aware of his rich on-screen presence, but it appears Pearce, who received his first Academy Award nomination for his performance in The Brutalist, does have one unwarranted hater: himself. After a recent re-watch of Christopher Nolan's breakout film, Pearce wished he could transform into his character, Leonard Shelby, and quickly lose the memory of his performance, one that he referred to as "shit." Guy, we can confidently say that you're wrong about your evaluation of your mesmerizing and haunting performance in Memento.

So a feature film it is, and Sideshow and Janus Films have acquired all U.S. distribution rights to the film, with their plan being to give it a theatrical release sometime in the spring of 2025. We don’t know a specific release date for this one yet, but a new teaser trailer has arrived online and you can check it out in the embed above. We saw the previous teaser trailer eight months ago.

Guy Pearce recently re-watched Christopher Nolan’s Memento, a film he very memorably starred in, and let’s just say he didn’t like what he saw.
Have you ever found an old video or a photo of yourself and wondered what happened there, how did I let myself get immortalised in a situation like this? Maybe it was a terrible haircut or a really bad outfit, or perhaps an old taping of a school play and your memories of it don’t quite match what’s playing on screen.
For Guy Pearce though, that moment came with a rewatch of Memento.
That’s right, Christopher Nolan’s breakthrough film, that many of us remember fondly, had Pearce seemingly shuddering with disgust.

The non-linear structure of Munjal Yagnik’s debut aims at Memento-like noir but doesn’t gather the narrative shards into a compelling whole
Mulholland Drive and Memento are celebrated examples of how narrative fragmentation can dovetail well with the philosophical heart and aims of film noir. While this low-budget thriller doesn’t have the finesse of either of those films, it does at least aim high in its sundered viewpoint on the jealousy-filled menage à trois at its centre. Debut director Munjal Yagnik plays it entirely non-linear to begin with, before settling into a more conventional but still mobile flashback structure.
Mark (Gregory Waits) wakes up in disarray, quickly turning into despair when he walks into the bedroom to find (what we assume is) his partner dead on the bed. But the next scene reveals he has been playing away: his wife, Sidney (Nadine van Asbeck) returns home to find him frantically cleaning.

Actors are typically known to be a little hard on themselves, with many avoiding watching their final, cut-together performances at all, but Academy Award nominee Guy Pearce is happy to engage with a little self-evaluation. Well… not exactly happy.
In a recent interview with The Times of London, the Australian actor reflected on his work in Christopher Nolan’s mind-bending crime thriller “Memento” and the “existential crisis” that was brought on from revisiting it in a recent viewing.
“I watched ‘Memento’ the other day and I’m still depressed. I’m shit in that movie,” Pearce said. “I’d never thought that before, but I did this Q&a of ‘Memento’ earlier this month and decided to actually watch the film again. But while it was playing I realized I hate what I did. And so all this stuff about an exec at Warners being why I’ve not worked with Chris again?...

Guy Pearce is his own biggest critic. If anyone needs any proof of that, then they can look no further than his recent comments about his appearance in Christopher Nolan’s early movie, Memento. Released in 2000, the debut feature film of the director who would go on to make the greatest Batman movie, several mind-bending blockbusters, and the Oscar-winning Oppenheimer, saw Pearce taking on the lead role as a man who is hunting his wife’s killer, but has no ability to recall his recent memories. According to the actor, he was “sh-t” in the film.
Let’s get the obvious out of the way. Scoring 94% from both critics and audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, and turning a paltry $5-9 million budget into a $40 million box office hit, makes it hard to label Memento as having many failings. In fact, many reviews of the movie specifically single out Pearce’s “unforgettable...

Veteran actor Guy Pearce recently shared a surprising and candid assessment of his role in Christopher Nolan’s breakthrough film “Memento,” despite the movie’s critical acclaim and his own numerous award nominations.
In an interview with The Sunday Times, Pearce, 57, revealed his deep dissatisfaction with his performance as Leonard Shelby in the 2000 psychological thriller. “I’m still depressed. I’m shit in that movie,” he said after rewatching the film following a recent Q&a session.
Pearce’s self-criticism goes beyond typical actor modesty. He gave himself a rating of “five out of ten” for the performance, explaining that his approach to the character was fundamentally flawed. “I was trying to do a flippant attitude but it was all wrong,” he noted, referencing legendary actor John Gielgud’s advice to “never be bad in a good movie.”

Guy Pearce has made a new revelation about his performance in 2000’s Memento: “I’m shit in that movie.”
During a recent interview with The Sunday Times, the actor got candid about his thoughts on his role as Leonard Shelby in the Christopher Nolan-directed film. “I watched Memento the other day and I’m still depressed. I’m shit in that movie,” he confessed.
Pearce said he’d “never thought that before, but I did this Q&a of Memento earlier this month and decided to actually watch the film again. But while it was playing I realized I hate what I did.”

It might be one of the most popular films of the early aughts, but “Memento” star Guy Pearce has recently realized he can’t stand his role in the movie. “I watched ‘Memento’ the other day and I’m still depressed. I’m s–t in that movie,” the actor told The Telegraph in an interview published Saturday.
The actor rewatched the movie ahead of a planned Q&a event, he added, and “while it was playing I realized I hate what I did. And so all this stuff about an exec at Warners being why I’ve not worked with Chris again? It came crashing down. I know why I didn’t work with Chris again — it’s because I’m no good in ‘Memento.'”
The comment followed a question about why Pearce was not cast in Christopher Nolan’s Batman film that shortly followed “Memento.” Pearce had...
