Warner Bros. Discovery isn’t looking backwards. The company is faced with the loss of its NBA rights package in the United States following the conclusion of the 2025 season, but Wbd execs are trying to shift the narrative surrounding those events. The company wants it known that in a world where pay-tv losses are expected to continue, it wants to follow a steady approach to fiscal soundness, especially when it comes to live sports.

Key Details: In its quarterly letter to shareholders, Wbd said sports is one area where it will follow a “disciplined” strategy. It also said its new deal with the NBA represents a more “efficient” relationship. Wbd expects losses from its linear TV business to continue in the coming years. That number exceeded forecasts and then some, and in the fourth quarter Wbd was able to add 6.4 million more streaming customers, bringing its overall total to 116.9M. Wbd currently has 57.1 domestic streaming subscribers, and 59.8 million customers. Although Wbd does not break out its streaming subscriber totals for Max and discovery+ separately, it’s fair to assume the vast majority of these users are on Max.

When a TV show’s been on for a while, it’ll probably start poking fun at itself.

Scrubs, which starts out playing a sentimental jingle every time something sad happens, eventually has characters point the jingle out and start singing it themselves. Game of Thrones, famous for its many scenes of brothel sex, ends up throwing in a scene where the brothel ladies discuss all the mutilated war victims they’ve recently serviced, and the sex scene is ruined. Lost eventually has a character monologue about the previous four seasons of plot, admitting he doesn’t really understand it himself.

But sometimes, the opposite happens. Early on, a show will mock some cliché that exists in other stories, marking itself as above all that. Later, seemingly forgetting having taken that stance, it’ll end up resorting to that very cliché. It even happened with the very shows we just mentioned.

James Gandolfini’s portrayal of Tony Soprano redefined television, cementing The Sopranos as one of the greatest TV shows of all time. However, behind the scenes, a fierce contract dispute between Gandolfini and HBO nearly derailed the series, costing the network millions.

“The Substance” and “Wicked” took home the top prizes at the Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild (IATSE Local 706) Awards.

The guild held its 12th annual awards ceremony at a new venue, moving from the Beverly Hilton Hotel to the Fairmont Plaza in Century City.

IATSE President Matthew Loeb started the show and called on Local 706 members to be generous “in this time.”

Loeb says, “There’s much to celebrate the incredible work that the members of local 706 do, their spirit of perseverance, appreciation of life, life in the arts, and their determination to rebuild.”

He announced that the evening was dedicated to the Walsh/ Di Tolla/Spivak Foundation to raise money to help those impacted by the wildfires.
