Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio are frequent collaborators, and one of their most exciting projects was their first, 2002’s Gangs of New York. The crime period drama was lauded by audiences and critics alike for its writing and performances, and featured a stellar cast.
Martin Scorsese’s Gangs of New York is moving to Peacock this April, making the multiple Academy Award-nominated film available for streaming at home. The movie follows Amsterdam Vallon as he returns to the Five Points seeking revenge for the death of his father. “Priest” Vallon, played by Liam Neeson, was one of the most prominent gang leaders in New York at the time, heading up the Dead Rabbits, a band of Irish Catholic immigrants. MGM+ has made it official and ordered The Westies crime drama from Narcos creator Chris Brancato.
The Peaky Blinders-esque period drama series about fearsome Irish gangs in New York will start production in Toronto in July 2025. Martin Scorsese captured a similar storyline in his 2002 film Gangs of New York, which starred Leonardo DiCaprio and Daniel Day-Lewis and followed the rise of Irish gangs and their power struggles with other criminal groups in the area around the Five Points neighborhood of lower Manhattan.
But rather than set The Westies in the late 19th century, like Scorsese’s film, Brancato has chosen a 1980s New York City backdrop for his MGM+ crime drama.
“We are thrilled to bring our viewers another provocative, exciting crime drama from the incomparable vision of Chris Brancato,” Michael Wright, head of MGM+ said in a statement on Tuesday. “Chris is a gifted showrunner who builds his stories...

Martin Scorsese's Goodfellas depicts the crime lifestyle perfectly, despite an expert calling out one casting choice that upset his father. The legendary director has explored the mob milieu many times over his illustrious career, starring in 1973 with his third movie, Mean Streets, which was also Scorsese's first of several collaborations with Robert De Niro. Though Mean Streets is considered by many to be one of the greatest gangster movies ever made, Scorsese's Mafia magnum opus might be Goodfellas, which is widely regarded as one of the greatest movies ever made.
Over the years, Scorsese has explored many aspects of the Mafia and gangster lifestyle in Raging Bull, Casino, and Gangs of New York. However, it was his exploration of the Irish Mob in Boston, The Departed, that won Best Picture and earned Scorsese his only Academy Award for Best Director. More recently, Scorsese made The Irishman, what many...

Daniel Day-Lewis is a veritable screen legend, rightly regarded as one of the greatest actors of all time. Though famously picky with his roles, only appearing in one movie every few movies, and now mostly retired, Day-Lewis's filmography is still formidable. It very much leans toward drama, including classics like My Left Foot, Gangs of New York, and There Will Be Blood.

The acclaimed British actors are no strangers to fantasy and genre fare, given the former's time on Stranger Things and the latter's time appearing in, well, seemingly everything else, but neither have played in the acclaimed and beloved universe of author J. R. R. Tolkien — until now.

Best Director gets more attention at the Oscars, but this millennium has shown the writing categories are potentially more important. In the past 15 years Argo (2012), Green Book (2018), and Coda (2021) won Best Picture without directing noms — but no film since Titanic (1997) has won without a writing nom. That could be good news for many of this year's nominees for Best Adapted Screenplay. Four of the five are also up for the top prize. Here is our breakdown of the race as it stands today.

Since the nominations were announced on Jan. 23, the Oscar Best Actor race had narrowed into a two-man battle between a pair of two-time nominees: Adrien Brody of The Brutalist (who won his first time out) and Timothée Chalamet of A Complete Unknown (who didn't). It would be a significant upset if either of these actors didn't cart off the trophy. But shockers happen, as Brody himself knows all too well. If that happens, three other nominees are hoping to pounce: Ralph Fiennes for Conclave, Colman Domingo for Sing Sing, and Sebastian Stan for The Apprentice.
Let's analyze the Best Actor contest in greater depth.
The Frontrunner: Adrien Brody
Before diving into Brody's Brutalist bona fides, let's climb into the way-back machine to look at the actor's upset win in the category in 2003 for The Pianist.

Timothée Chalamet had a mic-drop moment at the SAG Awards on Sunday, singing his way to a Best Actor win for playing Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown.
Chalamet, who was in second place in the Gold Derby odds, beat Adrien Brody (The Brutalist), Daniel Craig (Queer), Colman Domingo (Sing Sing), and Ralph Fiennes (Conclave).
"I know the classiest thing would be to downplay the effort that went into this role and how much this means to me," Chalamet said during his acceptance speech. "The truth is that this was five-and-a-half years of my life. I poured everything that I had into playing this incomparable artist, Mr. Bob Dylan — a true American hero. It was the honor of a lifetime to play him."
After thanking his costars, Chalamet proudly proclaimed, "I know we're in a subjective business, but the truth is, I'm in pursuit of greatness. I know people don't usually talk like that,...

When it comes to British historical dramas, very few can be said to have matched the popularity attained by Peaky Blinders, so it’s understandable why fans were excited for series creator Steven Knight’s latest venture, A Thousand Blows. Set in the underworld of late 19th century London, the six-episode series focuses on the real-life all-female thieves gang, The Forty Elephants, and highlights the transition period of boxing. A Thousand Blows is engaging enough to keep its viewers hooked throughout, and aside from a solid script and the authentic recreation of historical settings, a colorful ensemble of characters proved to be the major reason behind that. With a second season already greenlit, there is a possibility of the series gaining a cult following in the near future, and the continuation of a proper arc of the players involved will be something to look forward to.

For decades, Leonardo DiCaprio has kept Hollywood on its toes by delivering the perfect blend of tabloid-worthy bad-boy charm and being idolized as a timeless movie star of classic and legendary films. His rise to fame following James Cameron’s 1997 opus Titanic was not in vain as the actor then kept proving himself as the industry’s next figurative golden goose.

A Hawaii-set crime thriller, directed by Martin Scorsese and featuring an all-star cast, will see the filmmaker return to the mobster genre once again.
Reports of a new Martin Scorsese project have surfaced, and it looks as though the filmmaker is making a crime caper. According to Deadline, the veteran director will add a new movie about mobsters to a body of work that already includes Goodfellas, Gangs Of New York, Casino, The Departed and The Irishman.
This time around, Hawaii is the location, and Emily Blunt and Dwayne Johnson, stars of Jungle Cruise, and A24’s upcoming Mma drama, The Smashing Machine, reportedly brought the project to regular collaborators Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio. The pair must have liked what they heard because the whole package of story, director and stars is now being shopped around Hollywood and won’t be short of an interested party or two, we’d imagine.

Martin Scorsese is lining up a major new project, and it’s already shaping up to be one of the hottest packages in Hollywood. The legendary director is set to helm a crime drama starring Dwayne Johnson, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Emily Blunt. The film, currently untitled, will be written by journalist and author Nick Bilton and is inspired by real events.
The story focuses on a powerful and ruthless Hawaiian crime boss in the 1960s and 70s, a figure reminiscent of Robert De Niro’s Jimmy the Gent from Goodfellas. This mob leader fought to establish dominance in Hawaii’s criminal underworld, battling mainland syndicates and corporate interests while striving to protect his homeland.
The film is described as a sweeping crime saga, marking another venture into the gangster genre for Scorsese, who previously explored similar themes in The Departed and Goodfellas.

Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio are attached to produce a new film based on an original idea from Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt.
The Hawaii-set crime caper, which is currently being shopped to studios and streamers, is drawing comparisons in the industry to “The Departed” and “Goodfellas.” Even in spirit, there are no deals in place and the viability of the project depends on a distributor, according to multiple sources familiar with the package, but the untitled drama is set to be written by author and journalist Nick Bilton, who helmed the 2021 HBO documentary “Fake Famous.”
Johnson and Blunt, who previously worked together on “Jungle Cruise,” brought the project to Scorsese and DiCaprio, and once they expressed interest, they all went to Bilton to ask him about writing.
Producers on the forthcoming film include Scorsese, Johnson, Blunt, DiCaprio, Bilton, Dany Garcia, Lisa Frechette and Rick Yorn.

Exclusive: The hot package in town is a pitch for a Martin Scorsese-directed untitled drama that would star Dwayne Johnson, Leonardo DiCaprio and Emily Blunt.

Throughout his acclaimed career on-screen, Liam Neeson has rightfully become a household name. Not only has he appeared in countless stand-alone hits like Love Actually and Gangs of New York, but he's also starred in several popular film franchises. Looking at his presence across production sizes, fans might think there's no part too big or too small for the Irish actor to play. However, it seems there was one role in the past that the Taken actor wasn't so taken with.
When director Peter Jackson was casting characters for his now-celebrated Lord of the Ringstrilogy, Neeson was being considered for Boromir, the gallant warrior of Gondor. Ultimately, he decided to turn down the part. Considering the scale and legacy of the Lord of the Rings' universe as well as Jackson's renowned filmography, it seems odd that anyone would pass on such a massive opportunity. Well, his reasoning is just as strange.

In 2007, Martin Scorsese won his first and only Best Director Academy Award for his work on The Departed. Most sensible people would agree that The Departed is not the best of Scorsese's films, but few would be angry that a director of his caliber has an Oscar under his belt. After all, Scorsese had previously received Best Director nominations for The Aviator, Gangs of New York, Goodfellas, The Last Temptation of Christ and Raging Bull.

Netflix’s latest action comedy, Back In Action, boasts a stacked cast filled with heavyweight actors, but unfortunately, like numerous such forgettable Ott ventures, their talents are completely wasted by an unimaginative script. The movie focuses on a spy couple who leave their old life to turn a new page and decide to settle for a peaceful family life, only for the situation to spiral out of control and drag them back into the game. Instead of trying something new with this age-old premise, the movie mostly depends on nostalgia pandering through extremely dated characterization, which is seemingly drawn straight out of unfunny sitcoms. The makers perhaps intended the tone to be family friendly, but the way they went about it turned the movie into something that feels more like a caricature than an organic venture. There is a possibility that a sequel entry gets made, given there are several...

Back in the 1980s, the buddy cop style of comedy and action blockbuster was a dominant force at the box office. Much of the appeal of this style of film was in teaming a stand-up comedian or tried-and-true comedy actor with a classically-trained "tough guy," basing a lot of the tension and laughs on the two characters butting heads. When director Martin Brest decided to make a similar style movie, this time about the tense banter between a bounty hunter and the man he has been hired to haul across the country, it seemed like he was following this formula by hiring comic-actor Charles Grodin and dramatic legend Robert De Niro.
However, much of the charm and surprise of Brest's 1988 movie Midnight Run comes from the fact that De Niro is just as in on the laughs as anyone else. His outstanding work in Midnight Run proved to audiences that...

By 2018, when she reunited with her co-stars from The Sweetest Thing for an interview with Entertainment Weekly, she described herself as “retired,” and stayed that way for the next several years — until now. At an event in October, Diaz explained that she had stepped away from her professional career because she had to “reclaim” her life and that what she was “passionate” about at the time was building her family, but that she agreed to Back in Action to re-team with her Annie co-star: “I couldn’t say no to Jamie.”

Since 2002, Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio have collaborated on multiple feature films. These two iconic fixtures of modern American cinema first worked together on the dramatic films – Gangs of New York and The Aviator, followed by The Departed which garnered acclaim, including a long overdue Best Picture and Best Director Academy Award for Scorsese. These collaborations have proven to be successful both critically and financially, with all of DiCaprio's features directed by Scorsese grossing over 100 million dollars. However, the one of these films that might feel the least typical for either Scorsese or DiCaprio remains an underrated fixture in both of their filmographies.

Andrew Garfield addresses potentially playing Jesus in Martin Scorsese's new movie, saying "You can’t just keep waiting for Scorsese to call." The legendary director is best known for operating within the gangster genre with Mean Streets, Goodfellas, Casino, Gangs of New York, The Departed, and The Irishman. However, he has also frequently explored religion throughout his career with the religious epics The Last Temptation of Christ, Kundun, and Silence – the last of which starred Andrew Garfield.
Within his illustrious filmography, Scorsese's religious epics tend to be less popular than his gangster films, despite being equally as masterful. His 1988 epic, The Last Temptation of Christ, was quite controversial for retelling the life of Christ in human rather than divine terms. It ended up being a modest box office success that grossed over $33 million on a $7 million budget. One of his lesser-known films, 1997's Kundun, offered an account of the...

Director Martin Scorsese might be known for making some of the finest crime dramas around, such as Mean Streets, Goodfellas, Gangs of New York, and The Departed, but back in 1988, the Catholic auteur took a crack at bringing the story of Jesus to life in The Last Temptation of Christ. Based on Nikos Kazantzakis' 1955 novel of the same name, the controversial film explored the struggles Jesus faced with various forms of temptation, including fear, doubt, and lust. Now, more than 35 years later, star Willem Dafoe is singing the praises of Scorsese's movie, calling it "one of the best experiences" of his life.
Dafoe portrayed Jesus of Nazareth in The Last Temptation of Christ, which was shot on a budget of $7 million, and brought in a worldwide total of $33 million at the box office. Panned by religious organizations, critics — including Roger Ebert — lauded the movie and the script by Paul Schrader,...

Communication in film has been explored in many different ways over the years. Stories have been told through song, dance, complicated battles, and, of course, through the spoken word. With the majority of Hollywood movies made in English, it becomes a bit of an obstacle when a story takes place in a different country or time. The need for full historical accuracy is often cast aside in favor of making the scripts as easy to follow as possible for the viewers. Foreign languages become "English with an accent" and regional accents become exaggerated for effect.
Another issue is the ability of the actors themselves. While many performers have multiple talents, dedicate countless hours, and even immerse themselves in the world they're about to bring to the screen, there are times when that sadly, isn't enough. English actors taking on an American accent can become a caricature, and American actors attempting a "British" accent,...

Martin Scorsese may be revered as one of our greatest living filmmakers, but he has often had to fight tooth and nail to bring his visions to the big screen. This is largely due to the box office. Yes, "Raging Bull," "The King of Comedy," and "Goodfellas" are considered masterpieces, but they were not hits in theatrical release. So when, after being continuously passed over for Academy Award recognition, he set his sights on making his mobbed-up magnum opus "Gangs of New York," just about every studio in town declined to bankroll his dream.
It wasn't like he'd sprung the project on the film industry. Alberto Grimaldi, the renowned Italian producer of classics by Federico Fellini, Sergio Leone, and Bernardo Bertolucci, had taken out an ad announcing the production of the film way back in 1977. But when the New Hollywood revolution died with the bank-breaking failure of Michael Cimino's...

Plot: Four years in the life of Bob Dylan (Timothee Chalamet), from his discovery by Pete Seeger (Edward Norton) through his eventual rise to fame as a folk singer, through his controversial decision to go electric on the eve of the 1965 Newport Folk Festival.
Review: It’s hard to accurately sum up just how much of a profound effect Bob Dylan had on pop culture. One of the greatest songwriters of all time, for sixty years now, Dylan’s been sitting at the top of the pantheon of music greats, but oddly enough, outside of Todd Haynes’s impressionistic ode to his legend – I’m Not There, and a series of documentaries by Martin Scorsese, no one’s ever tried to tell his story as a traditional biopic until now. Sporting an impeccably assembled cast, James Mangold’s made an excellent companion piece to his own Walk the Line in that...

Many know Martin Scorsese to be an exceptional genre filmmaker who, throughout his career, has excelled in genres such as gangster films, thrillers and neo-noirs. Initially believing he would not make genre pictures, Scorsese found his own way into projects and it could sometimes take years. This has been the case with many of the legendary director's classic movies, such as Raging Bull, Goodfellas and Casino. However, what remains most interesting is how long it took him to make a Western.
Martin Scorsese has always celebrated the films that most influenced his career. Each new project has many classic inspirations that Scorsese nods to, and many of those classics are among the director's favorite films. Martin Scorsese has always had a catalog of classics he often recommends audiences see at one point or another in their lives. Whether it's Fellini's 8 1/2, Kubrick's Barry Lyndon, or Cassavetes' Shadows, Scorsese has expressed...

The versatile John C. Reilly has been announced as the first honoree at the 19th annual Oscar Wilde Awards.
The event, organized by the US-Ireland Alliance, is set for Feb. 27 — in its traditional evening spot three days before the Oscars — at the historic Ebell theater in Los Angeles, its original home.
The casual bash celebrates the work of those from Ireland — and some who are not — who contribute to film, television and music. It also fosters artistic collaborations, from giving young actors and singers a profile in the U.S. to encouraging the shooting of films in Ireland.
The Chicago-born Reilly, 59, speaks often of his family’s strong ties to Ireland. A frequent visitor to the country, he served as the International Guest of Honor at Dublin’s St. Patrick’s Day festivities in 2022.
“It might just seem like a goof to just appear at a parade, but to me,...
