At a time when every TV crime show is scrutinized and met with cynicism, this one works no matter what someone's point of view. It's the anti-procedural that also preserves what fans love about procedurals, from the people who know the genre better than anyone.

On Call centers on a pair of police officers, veteran Traci Harmon and rookie Alex Diaz, as they patrol the streets of Long Beach. Creators Tim Walsh and Elliot Wolf weave in some ongoing plot threads regarding the murder of another officer and Traci's past, but the most important part of the show is the day-to-day that the characters face.

A Black locksmith runs afoul of ruthless gangsters after opening the wrong door in a European city wracked by Black Lives Matter protests. Night Call gets style points as a slickly-shot crime noir thriller, but dramatically fails with illogical exposition and a flawed use of racial unrest to drive the narrative. The easily duped protagonist becomes the textbook "Magical Negro" stereotype common in cinema and railed against by filmmaker Spike Lee. Our hero throws self-preservation to the wind for eye-rolling gallantry when he could have rectified his own dire situation.
