David Simon is developing a new series at HBO, Variety has learned exclusively.
Simon is attached to write and executive produce the drama project, currently titled “The System.” Lily Thorne and Larissa MacFarquhar will also write and co-executive produce, with Kiese Laymon also attached to write.

HBO's miniseries are mandatory viewing for TV fans, with blockbuster hits like Game of Thrones and The Last of Us setting the standard. Short-form TV allows movie stars to shine on HBO, like Al Pacino in Angels in America and Kate Winslet in Mare of Easttown. Historical dramas like The Pacific and John Adams bring real events to life, with band of Brothers recognized as one of TV's best miniseries ever.
No television network has perfected the miniseries like HBO, with many of their releases so great that they should be considered mandatory viewing for TV fans. Mads Mikkelsen confirms that Bryan Fuller "has a few ideas" for Hannibal season 4, giving hope for its revival. The cast and crew are eager to return to the show, but are waiting for the right opportunity to find a home for it. Despite the long wait, Mikkelsen's confidence in Fuller's vision suggests that Hannibal may finally come back after nearly a decade.
After years of on and off talks about a revival, Mads Mikkelsen offers a very promising update on Hannibal season 4's chances. Loosely based on Thomas Harris' novel series surrounding the titular character, the NBC horror-thriller show scored rave reviews during its three-season run, but never showed strong ratings for the network, being cancelled after a literal cliffhanger ending. The years since have resulted in talks from Mikkelsen, co-star Hugh Dancy and creator Bryan Fuller about a potential season 4 revival or movie expansion.

This year, for the first time ever, multiple limited series have each received two simultaneous directing Emmy nominations. These history-making programs – “Beef” and “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” – are both Netflix productions that have amassed 13 TV academy notices apiece, with this being one of eight categories in which they are directly facing off. While it is true that only one of this category’s previous multi-nominated series actually won, the fact that these two new shows take up a majority of their lineup’s slots might very well yield an unusual result.
Either Netflix series would bring the streaming platform its third limited program directing win, following the success of “Unorthodox” in 2020 and “The Queen’s Gambit” in 2021. Also in the running are the category’s first Hulu original movie, “Prey,” and the FX series “Fleishman is in Trouble,” which also hails from a network that has already prevailed here twice.

The Primetime Emmys are not necessarily known for honoring projects featuring casts that are primarily minority/people of color. The TV academy has never, for instance, given the Best Drama Series trophy to such a show. The statuette for Best Comedy Series has been won by a series featuring a largely minority cast precisely once: “The Cosby Show” in 1985. But the category of top limited/anthology/miniseries has paid golden tribute to programs with mostly minority casts a handful of times before, helping give Netflix’s “Beef” with its predominantly Asian American lineup a genuine shot to take home the biggest prize.
“Beef” tied with “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” for the most nominations among all non-regular series programs with 13. It’s presently in the lead among Gold Derby voters in the limited series race with 16/5 combined odds. Its star Ali Wong is also in first place among limited lead actresses,...

David Simon tweeted from a WGA strike picket line on Monday that his deal with HBO has been suspended after 25 years with the cable channel. Simon is behind such prestige HBO TV as “The Wire,” “We Own this City” and “Treme,” and won two Emmys for his series “The Corner.”
“On the day that HBO called to suspend my deal after 25 years of writing television for them, I was doing the write thing,” he wrote in a caption to a video of writers chanting, “No contract, no peace.” Simon is not seen in the video he apparently shot himself.

Lance Reddick, a character actor most known for his role as Cedric Daniels on The Wire, has died at the age of 60.
His representative, Mia Hansen, said he passed away on Friday morning “from natural causes.”
In Memoriam 2022: 100 Great Celebrities Who Died In 2022
Reddick started his acting career in the 90s with appearances in The West Wing and New York Undercover.
Later on, he moved from his hometown in Baltimore to New York. There, he auditioned for David Simon for a role in The Corner, an HBO show that came two years before The Wire.
Reddick didn’t get the part, but he did earn his first recurring role on HBO’s Oz, where he portrayed an undercover detective.
Simon eventually cast Reddick in his breakout role as Narcotics Unit Lt. Daniels on The Wire. Although the show never became a hit, it received critical acclaim and grew in popularity after its run.

The world lost one hell of an actor when Lance Reddick passed away at the age of 60 from natural causes on March 17, 2023. The news hit the entertainment industry with pulverizing force, given that Reddick had been doing press for "John Wick: Chapter 4" throughout the week. But his death was especially difficult to comprehend because he cut such a powerful figure in every role. Reddick was in full stride as a character actor, as vital an onscreen force as there was in film and television. This is a profoundly cruel loss.

But all that was on my mind when I learned of his passing was Cedric Daniels on "The Wire": the firm, moral, yet institutionally savvy Baltimore police officer who risks...

Two decades beyond its pilot episode, HBO crime drama "The Wire" signaled a creative upheaval in cable TV. Called the great American novel put on screen by some and a Greek tragedy writ large by others, the show explored, in uncommon depth, the social and political nuances of the failed "war on drugs" that had been chugging along since 1971. Focused on an array of Baltimore characters and unpacking a different institution over each of its five seasons, creator David Simon and a formidable team of writers defied the neatly enclosed constraints of episodic television and proved viewers can immerse and invest themselves into a cumulative narrative that builds upon the last. It's a conceit that found success with concurrent HBO series like "The Sopranos" and "Oz," the latter of which had a greater influence on "The Wire" than anyone knew.

Over its five seasons in the early aughts, David Simon's HBO series "The Wire" threw viewers off every now and then. The creator originally sold the show to HBO CEO Chris Albrecht and entertainment division president Carolyn Strauss as an inverted cop-and-criminal drama -- one that broadened the horizons of Simon's previous Emmy-winning HBO series, itself an adaptation of his 1997 book co-written with homicide detective Ed Burns.

Scripted limited-run dramas inspired by recent, buzzy true-crime tales have recently oversaturated the market. And yet for as many as there are, notably few have drawn from what is arguably America’s most consequential (and most intractable) criminal justice phenomenon. The problem of dysfunctional policing and its disproportionate impact on communities of color has been largely ignored by scripted television, save for occasional arcs on the fictional police dramas whose rose-tinted views of police work have contributed to that very issue. (The quality of such well-intentioned episodes generally ranges between “Not totally humiliating” and “May induce cringe spasms.”)
The recent exception is “When They See Us,” Ava DuVernay’s gut-wrenching retelling of the Central Park Five case, which remains a potent example of how myopic and flawed police investigations can ruin lives. That show drew its power from how relevant the issues it explored remain three decades since the real-life incident that inspired it.

It’s disappointing to report that, contrary to its IMDb page, Treat Williams does not appear in all six episodes of “We Own This City,” George Pelecanos and David Simon’s new HBO miniseries, adapted from the book by Justin Fenton. But the good news is that when he finally does turn up in the penultimate episode, the show has generated such weight that his appearance has the proper power; for an epic saga of police corruption, nothing could feel more like the Pope giving his blessing than a cameo by the star of “Prince of the City.”

“The Wire’s” Felicia Pearson and Ed Burns are teaming up to develop a limited series based on Pearson’s life, Variety has learned exclusively.
The show is currently titled “A.K.A. Snoop” and would delve into the hardship Pearson endured growing up in Baltimore. Burns and Pearson are co-writing the series. Burns will executive produce along with Philip Michelson of Moondog Films. No network or streaming service is currently attached.
Born three months premature to a crack addicted mother, Pearson was given little chance of survival at birth. She ultimately grew up as a gay Black woman in a foster home in a neighborhood plagued by drugs and violence. She dealt drugs as a teenager before being convicted of second degree murder and spending over six years in prison.

David Simon isn’t messing with Texas, he’s done with the place — at least as a location.
The Wire creator took to social media this week to announce and reiterate he will not film an upcoming Lone Star-set HBO project in the state due to the odious abortion ban law recently put in place.
If an employer, this is beyond politics. I’m turning in scripts next month on an HBO non-fiction miniseries based on events in Texas, but I can’t and won’t ask female cast/crew to forgo civil liberties to film there. What else looks like Dallas/Ft. Worth? https://t.co/q6Py6XikYh

The Primetime Emmy Awards were unable to capitalize on its historic and diverse nomination fields, with all major acting trophies going to white actors.
Actors that were seen as solid contenders included Billy Porter and Mj Rodriguez (“Pose”), the late Michael K. Williams (“Lovecraft Country”) and Kenan Thompson and Bowen Yang (“Saturday Night Live”) — but in the end, all ended up empty-handed.
Michaela Coel, nominated for four Emmys, picked up the writing limited category for “I May Destroy You,” the third time a Black creative has won the category and first for a Black woman. Past Black winners have included David Mills (“The Corner”), Anthony Hemingway (“American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson”) and Stephen Williams and Christal Henry (“Watchmen”).

In this era when the lines have blurred between film, television, and streaming entertainment, it’s increasingly common for artists to cross over between the different media. And this year is no exception. In the last decade, filmmakers Steve McQueen and Barry Jenkins won Oscars for their historic films “12 Years a Slave” (2013) and “Moonlight” (2016), respectively. Now they could win Emmys for “Small Axe” and “The Underground Railroad.”

The ongoing social media debate about which urban crime drama is better — Snowfall or The Wire — is happening in large part because the former is arguably enjoying its best season to date.
The fact that the FX offering, with its Season 4 finale airing this Wednesday (10/9c), is drawing comparisons to one of the most compelling shows to ever air on television is a testament to the late Snowfall co-creator John Singleton’s ability to build a series that has strengthened over time. Last week’s penultimate episode, for instance, charged into our living rooms with nonstop tension and three bloody deaths.

HBO declined to comment.

During his monologue Tuesday, Jimmy Kimmel talked a lot about all the recent stupid or bad things Donald Trump has done (it’s a lot). And while it was all pretty unsettling, Kimmel managed to put a fun spin on one them with a supercut of all the times Trump has incorrectly claimed that the U.S. is “rounding the corner” when it comes to Covid-19.
“Even though the pandemic appears to be getting worse, even though the virus is on the rise, in almost every state and all over the world, fear not, because the president says we’re rounding the corner,” Kimmel said during his monologue to introduce the gag.
The clip, featuring jaunty whistle music, showed more than 20 times Trump has used the phrase. At first, it would just show video footage of Trump saying it, but as the supercut continued Kimmel began interspersing footage of horrible...

It’s hard to believe that it’s been 20 years since the beginning of this millennium, but it has indeed been two decades since our worries about Y2K were over, and our world had not yet been impacted by the tragic events of September 11, 2001. In the year in-between these historical events, “Mission Impossible 2,” “Gladiator” and “Cast Away” ruled the big screen, while on the small screen now-classic comedies drew us to our TV sets each week, the popularity of cable television was becoming a huge influence on the medium, we rooted for a beloved TV star with a surprising challenge and a new series dominated the 52nd Primetime Emmy Awards on September 10, 2000.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of Allison Janney winning her first (of seven!) Emmy Awards. The future Oscar winner was part of “The West Wing” sweep at the 52nd Emmys, which took place September 10, 2000 in ABC’s ceremony hosted by Garry Shandling. Heading into the ceremony many awards pundits thought HBO’s “The Sopranos” would prevail after being bested the previous year by ABC’s “The Practice.” However, it was yet another victory for broadcast networks as NBC’s political drama triumphed for what would be a record-tying run of four consecutive wins. (“The Sopranos” would have to wait until 2004 to finally be named TV’s Best Drama Series.) Watch Janney’s Emmys flashback video above.

David Simon is an Emmy-winning writer and producer whom critics have praised for decades, but to date the only Emmys he has won were Best Miniseries and Best Movie/Mini Writing for “The Corner” back in 2000. Can he finally get back into the winner’s circle with his latest limited series “The Plot Against America” with its timely subject matter?
That’s right, Simon hasn’t won an Emmy in 20 years, which means he didn’t win for “The Wire,” he didn’t win for “Treme,” he didn’t win for “Generation Kill,” he didn’t win for “Show Me a Hero,” and he hasn’t won for “The Deuce.” Of all those slights, “The Wire” probably looks the most egregious in hindsight since it is remembered as one of the most accomplished dramas of television’s post-“Sopranos” golden era. Exclusive: Former For Better or Worse star Tasha Smith is set as a series regular opposite Whitney Cummings and Lisa Kudrow in Good People, Amazon’s half-hour comedy pilot from Empire co-creator Lee Daniels and 2 Broke Girls co-creator Cummings, Amazon Studios and Fox 21 Television Studios.
Written by Daniels and Cummings, Good People revolves around three generations of women — played by Kudrow, Cummings and Totah — working in the ombudsman’s office of a college that navigates the current cultural climate, the concept of feminism across different generations and the struggle to reconcile socially constructed ideas with current ethical views regarding complex issues such as sex, race, class and gender.
Smith will play Shar Johnson, head of the campus health center. She and Hazel Miller (Cummings) are friends from when they went to college there. Shar is exasperated by PC culture and the focus on performative activism, instead of “real” problems...

The true-crime limited series “When They See Us” has received glowing reviews from critics, and because it premiered on May 31 on Netflix, the last day of Emmy eligibility, it has a chance to be honored by the television academy this summer too. But one race might be especially historic. Only five black women have ever been nominated for a Primetime Emmy for directing, but none have won. So if Ava DuVernay prevails this year for Best Movie/Mini Directing, it would be unprecedented.

The National Review offered an apology to the students of Covington Catholic High School on Tuesday after deputy managing editor Nick Frankovich wrote that their behavior toward Omaha tribal elder Nathan Phillips had been comparable to spitting on the cross.
“In this business, all we can do is own up to mistakes when they happen. We apologize to our readers and especially to the Covington students, who didn’t need us piling on,” the magazine’s editors wrote in a piece titled “The Covington Affair.”
“Nick was operating off the best version of events he had on Saturday night, and writing as a faithful Catholic and pro-lifer who has the highest expectations of his compatriots, not as a social-justice activist,” they continued. “As soon as better evidence emerged, we deleted the post.”
