Touhou Project began in 1997 as a series of Japanese doujin (independent) video games. It wasn’t until 2002 that developer Zun found his groove. That year’s Embodiment of Scarlet Devil set the formula: girls in frilly dresses trading barbed compliments while blasting each other with lasers. 2003’s Perfect Cherry Blossom perfected it. Since then, Touhou has grown to encompass 19 official games plus spin-offs. The newest in the series, Unfinished Dream of All Living Ghost , came out just last year. Touhou Project is more than just a series of video games. It is the river from which everything flows. In the past 22 years since the release of Embodiment of Scarlet Devil , fans have been busy mapping every corner of the world of Gensokyo. The internet is flooded with fan art, comics, albums , memes , music videos and even a multi-episode independent anime production . Touhou gave us Undertale . I’m pretty sure it laid the groundwork for v-tubers.

Rapper Kanye West took to social media to issue a public apology written in Hebrew and said that he “deeply regrets” his anti-Semitic remarks. “I sincerely apologise to the Jewish community for any ‘unintended outburst’ caused by my words or actions,’ ” the 46-year-old wrote, translated to English.
“It was not my intention to hurt or demean, and I deeply regret any pain I may have caused.”
Kanye went on to vow that he’s “committed to starting with myself and learning from this experience to ensure greater sensitivity and understanding in the future.”
He added: “Your forgiveness is important to me, and I am committed to making amends and promoting unity.”
Catching wind of his post, the Anti-Defamation League responded through a statement: “After causing untold damage by using his vast influence and platform to poison countless minds with vicious antisemitism and hate, an apology in Hebrew may be the...

Just ahead of the January 12 release of his latest album Vultures, Kanye West posted an apology on his Instagram Tuesday in Hebrew for his past antisemitic remarks.
The rapper, who goes by the name Ye, has faced intense criticism for his antisemitic outbursts, and now is asking forgiveness from the Jewish community.
“I sincerely apologize to the Jewish community for any ‘unintended outburst’ caused by my words or actions,’” he wrote (via Google Translate). It was not my intention to hurt or demean, and I deeply regret any pain I may have caused.”
The artist has seen his career implode following a stream of similar antisemitic tirades that have included praise for Adolf Hitler and the Nazis. Some have blamed him in part for an increase in antisemitic hate crimes in the U.S. and he has been condemned across the board, dropped by CAA and prompted many brands to cut ties,...

Roger Waters has long denied he’s antisemitic. His former collaborators — including the celebrated producer Bob Ezrin — are telling a different story.
A new documentary, The Dark Side of Roger Waters, includes claims from Ezrin and former Waters saxophonist Norbert Stachel. Both are Jewish, and both claim Waters made offensive remarks about Jewish people to them. The documentary, a 37-minute project produced by the U.K. group Campaign Against Antisemitism, also includes screenshots of a 2010 email Waters wrote to his team that suggested emblazoning his famous inflatable pig with a Star of David...

Roger Waters has long been accused of antisemitism, in part because of his frequent condemnation of Israel and in part because he has a tendency to use … inflammatory stage design to get his politics across. A new investigation by the Campaign Against Antisemitism (CAA), however, quotes prominent Jewish musicians who claim to have experienced antisemitism from the former Pink Floyd bassist firsthand.
In a documentary entitled The Dark Side of Roger Waters, BBC journalist John Ware interviews Norbert Statchel, Waters’ former saxophonist, and Bob Ezrin, the music producer who helped helm Pink Floyd’s The Wall. Both men are Jewish. According to Statchel, after learning that the saxophonist was of Ashkenazi Jewish descent — with ancestors who were murdered in the Holocaust — Waters offered to “introduce” Statchel to his dead grandmother, then began an impression of a peasant Polish woman.
“Now you’ve met your grandmother! How do you feel now?...

Bel Powley stars in the National Geographic series “A Small Light” as Miep Gies, the woman who helped hide Otto Frank and his family during WWII. During a reception for the show Thursday at the San Vicente Bungalows in West Hollywood, the actor recalled being on set when she first heard about Kanye West’s antisemitic comments in October 2022.
“We were filming the show when all of the Kanye stuff was happening,” Powley told me. “I was obviously living in the world of the show, which has a lot of Nazi rhetoric because we’re making a show about the Nazi occupation in 1942, but then suddenly seeing and hearing that same rhetoric spoken now by a world-famous celebrity with huge influence was so freaky and unsettling and saddening.”

Roger Waters will be allowed to play a concert in Frankfurt, Germany at the end of May, after an administrative court ruled against local officials who had tried to cancel the concert.
According to German public broadcaster Deutsche Welle, neither the city of Frankfurt, nor the German state of Hesse had the right to cancel Waters’ concert. Frankfurt officials had tried to block the show over Waters’ alleged antisemitism, which has been tied to his criticism of Israel and his support of Palestine and the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (Bds) movement.

She Came to Me has designs on being a grand opera, but it’s definitely more of what the British call a panto. Opening at a swanky cocktail reception as a male tenor offhandedly begins singing the famous “Habanera” from Carmen, we’re introduced to the sketchily imaged beau monde existence of one Steven Lauddem (Peter Dinklage), blocked opera composer extraordinaire. He’s toasting his first commission following a breakdown, through which he met and then wed his psychiatrist Patricia (Anne Hathaway), but artistic inspiration again eludes him. They enjoy a cosseted, Brooklyn townhouse-inhabiting existence, familiar from Woody Allen and earlier Noah Baumbach pictures––a hint at the weirdly dated manner of this film where lead characters are immune from the expected satire, humbling, or cross-examination, and instead indulged for unfunny farce.

The Kanye West backlash over his antisemitic remarks could be the reason he is denied entry into Australia. Sky News reported that the rapper was planning a trip Down Under to visit his partner’s family.
“People like that who’ve applied for visas to get into Australia in the past have been rejected,” Minister for Education Jason Clare told Channel Nine in an interview. “I expect that if he does apply he would have to go through the same process and answer the same questions that they did.”
West, who goes by Ye, made a series of antisemitic comments in October 2022 and doubled down on his sentiments as he went on an interview tour that included Fox News’ Tucker Carlson’s show and The Shop, which ultimately scrapped the episode due to the severeness of his remarks. The rapper was subsequently dropped by Adidas and other business deals.

A good poster finds an iconic image or idea, and removes all the clutter to focus on that. Design company High Council has settled on a mountain of food as a bridal dress, for Emma Seligman's bisexual funeral drama Shiva Baby. The dim lighting, including background shadows caused by the spotlight, and incongruent image of fashion and whipped food, imply that the ride is going to be challenging and confrontational. And yet, the pink cursive font (with tiny Star of David) contrasts that as almost a formal invitation. What is a movie poster, other than an invitation from the cinema lobby to come in and experience the thing? The direct look at the audience, while presenting the...

When “Call Me by Your Name” screened at the New York Film Festival last month, several threads from Timothée Chalamet’s 21-year-old life wove together. Above the sold-out, 1,100-seat audience at Alice Tully Hall, he watched the second half from the balcony, seated next to the actor who plays his lover, Armie Hammer, and their director, Luca Guadagnino. Onscreen, Chalamet’s character was 17, the same age he was when Guadagnino met him. At that time, Chalamet was a student at Fiorello H. Laguardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts — the Upper West Side inspiration for “Fame” — across the street.

Looking back on this still-young century makes clear that 2007 was a major time for cinematic happenings — and, on the basis of this retrospective, one we’re not quite through with ten years on. One’s mind might quickly flash to a few big titles that will be represented, but it is the plurality of both festival and theatrical premieres that truly surprises: late works from old masters, debuts from filmmakers who’ve since become some of our most-respected artists, and mid-career turning points that didn’t necessarily announce themselves as such at the time. Join us as an assembled team, many of whom were coming of age that year, takes on their favorites.

This year’s MTV VMAs show was full of political messages. And wasn’t just what you saw on TV — it started on the red carpet.
First, Catfish host Nev Schulman chose to wear a yellow Star of David patch on his blazer — a reference to the yellow stars Jews across Germany and Nazi-occupied Europe were forced to wear to signify their faith — as a statement against the growing neo-Nazi and white nationalism movement.
This comes just several days after Billy Joel did the same thing, donning yellow Star of David patches on his label and back during a performance at N.

Last year, Nev Schulman and his wife, Laura Perlongo, turned the MTV Video Music Awards into a maternity photo shoot before the arrival of their baby, and this year, the couple decided to make another strong impression on the red carpet by publicly standing against white supremacy and neo-Nazi individuals. Nev donned a yellow Star of David pinned to his jacket in support of Jewish people, while his wife also wore a red heart pinned to her top. The yellow pin is a strong statement, which Billy Joel similarly wore at a recent New York City concert, as it's the symbol Jews were required to wear to identify themselves religiously during World Word II. But Nev was not alone. His Catfish costar appeared on the red carpet wearing a blue shirt with "Jew" emblazoned across the center. Billy Joel made a bold statement about the times we live in during a show by rocking the yellow Star of David ... this amid neo-Nazi rallies being held across the country. Billy was performing Monday night at NYC's Madison Square Garden, and he bore a Star of David patch on both the breast of his coat as well as on his back. He was raised by Jewish parents, and has described himself as culturally Jewish.

Billy Joel made a strong statement against the growing neo-Nazi and white nationalism movement on Monday night, taking the stage at New York’s Madison Square Garden wearing a yellow Star of David.
The 68-year-old hitmaker, who was born to Jewish parents and describes himself as culturally Jewish, donned the patch on both the lapel and back of his suit blazer — a reference to the yellow stars Jews were forced to wear during the Holocaust.
It was a surprisingly political statement from Joel, who previously told Rolling Stone that he found being lectured about political views at a concert to be a turnoff.

There are some aspects of Handsome: A Netflix Mystery Movie where it seems like star Jeff Garlin (he plays the title role of Gene Handsome) is doing his best work. Then, you remember the role he plays as Larry David's sidekick in Curb Your Enthusiasm and you know better. Make no mistake about it, Garlin is doing some very solid stuff in Handsome: A Netflix Mystery Movie, but it is hard for me to watch him on the screen and not see (or expect) Jeff Greene or Murray Goldberg for that matter. So lets just say that, as far as I am concerned, Handsome is an idea that needs its own full blown series.
The story of Handsome: A Netflix Mystery Movie follows the classic tropes of all the detective movies and shows we love. Gene Handsome is a Los Angeles homicide detective who is very good at his job.

Books are restricted only to the ruling elite and pictograms have replaced written language in public. “Is it better to speak or to die?” That’s the core question of “Call Me By Your Name,” which surfaces in a scene where a character reads the words of Marguerite of Navarre in “The Heptaméron,” but it’s an idea at the heart of all queer narratives. It’s been especially present in queer cinema, where muteness and survival are often the most bittersweet bedfellows. But “Call Me By Your Name” not only quotes Marguerite’s words, it suffuses them into every fiber of its being. It’s a great film because of how lucidly it poses her question, and an essential one because of how courageously it answers it.
