This TV drama is adapted from the novel "Water Margin" by Shi Nai'an in the late Yuan and early Ming dynasties. It is one of the Four Great Classical Novels of Chinese Literature.
The BBC aired an English dub of the show in the United Kingdom, three years after its original broadcast. They did not hire a Japanese translator, and instead had a writer make up dialogue based on the story synopsis and what he thought was happening in each scene
