Might be the greatest Action Game ever made

In 1998, A software company names Valve Software released a game that would forever change the way we look at Action Games. That game was called Half-Life. Hailed by PC-Gamer as "The Best 3D action game ever made", and I couldn't agree more.

The game itself won about 45 game of the year awards from many different publications.

    Brilliant, addictive, and scary.

This game requires patience, quick wits, quick fingers, and good problem solving skills. So do games like Mortal Pongbat. What makes Half-Life exceptional is the senses-shattering realism which laces the entire in-game environment. The textures are realistic, the colours appropriate, the sounds rich and flawlessly integrated for stereo separation (as in a monster on your left will always be heard from your left speaker), the level of interaction possible with the environment and the human characters is above and beyond what one might expect (FYI: punch the red button under the security guard's desk to set off an alarm and make everyone mad!), and the monsters are just as scary, slimy, and vicious as they come, and backed by a good AI to boot. The level design is incredible, with a perfect balance of problem solving and creature-killing, and the environment and enemies never seem repetitive, so you always have a sense of progress and a need to trudge on in the hopes that your goal might be just around the bend. All this makes this came perhaps the most addictive and awe-inspiring game of all time. And if you pass it and get bored, try the new alternate-take-on-the-same-story game, Opposing Force. And then if you get bored, join the even MORE addictive world of Half-Life online gaming (Team Fortress Classic or Counterstrike)!

A classic video game that is a bit outdated now, but then again we've got the sequel to look forward to!

Dr. Gordon Freeman is a scientist in a remote lab who survives an accident - some sort of portal is opened and soon alien creatures are attacking from everywhere. Armed with a limited supply of weapons, the man in the white lab coat unleashes some serious hell.

This game is often considered "the" first-person shooter (along with "AvP," etc.) and to be fair it is very good. The cinematic experience of the story is involving and it takes its time getting started - which is good. Once it does, it's non-stop action and highly entertaining.

I can't say this is the greatest FPS I've played. Nowadays the graphics are sort of outdated, too. It's not as good as the sequel (or so I've heard) but I won't put it down - it's still an excellent, excellent game...

Overall this is a must for any PC gamer.

Everything that you could possibly want.

This game is so unbelievably amazing... it is suspenseful (I still jump when the headcrabs fly at me in the dark vents), action packed (some of the fights against the commandos are incredible), thought provoking (the ending leaves you to think... but only if you choose to live... you'll see), with a great storyline... very original.

I agree on the fact that a movie should be made... but not about Gordon Freeman unless it takes place before the game. It should be about the scientists... what were they exactly working on? It also could be about one of the guards.. or the aliens themselves.

    Bottom line: One Great Game

    The best game ever

Well what can I say Half Life is the best game ever its wonderful the monsters can be scary some times the security guards and scientists are great and funny. It took me a while to complete it but it was worth it.You play a scientist called Gordon Freeman who works for a secret organisation underground when an experiment goes very wrong the underground facility turns into a crumbling mess and most the people are dead accept for you and a couple of people who are scared and injured. But you are not alone a race of aliens have suddenly come from nowhere and are killing any one they can find. You must get around loads of problems and aliens and grunts which have been sent in to kill you.Buy this game it sure is worth it and then try Half life Opposing Force.

G-Man: [the G-Man finally speaks to Gordon] Gordon Freeman, in the flesh - or, rather, in the hazard suit. I took the liberty of relieving you of your weapons. Most of them were government property. As for the suit, I think you've earned it. The borderworld, Xen, is in our control, for the time being... thanks to you. Quite a nasty piece of work you managed over there; I am impressed. That's why I'm here, Mr. Freeman. I have recommended your services to my... employers, and they have authorized me to offer you a job. They agree with me that you have limitless potential. You've proved yourself a decisive man so I don't expect you'll have any trouble deciding what to do. If you're interested, just step into the portal and I will take that as a yes. Otherwise, well, I can offer you a battle you have no chance of winning... rather an anticlimax after what you've just survived. Time to choose...

    • Alternate versions
Due to Germany's strict laws regarding video game violence at that time, the German version was heavily censored in order to see release over there and obtain the USK-16 rating. Notable changes include removal of gore and majority of the blood, human NPCs sit on floor and shake their heads when being killed, military soldiers are all robots instead of humans, and Barnacles spit out mechanical parts instead of bloody parts. In 2017, the game was removed from the BPjM index list and since then Valve offers a uncut patch for German Steam users.
