Dragon Ballhas chronicled Goku’s heroic adventures for nearly half a century and he’s made some unforgettable friends along the way. Dragon Ball has established an increasingly large cast of supporting characters, many of whom would be the strongest character in any other shonen series. Dragon Ball loves a redemption story and Android 18 is one of the series’ most unexpected shifts from enemy to ally.
Android 18 is a worthy opponent during Dragon Ball Z’s Cell Saga, who goes on to become a valuable hero, Krillin’s wife, and the mother of Marron. Android 18’s skills have been allowed to develop over time and she’s a character who hasn’t shied away from combat. In fact, 18 played an integral role during the Tournament of Power, the battle against Cell Max, and the assault on Moro’s Galactic Bandit Brigade. Friends is one of the most successful TV shows of all time, but it has not been without its controversy. The latest to be leveled at the series is a new claim of racist behavior that was allegedly witnessed by a guest star on the set.
On the Pod Meets World podcast, Mickey 17 actor Stephen Park appeared for an interview where he discussed his time on Friends. Park appeared on the series twice, once in Season 2's "The One with the Chicken Pox," and again in Season 3's "The One with the Ultimate Fighting Champion." The guest actor noted how beloved acting legend James Hong also appeared in the latter episode. On the set, Park says he heard the crew casually referring to Hong in an offensive way, lamenting how it seemed to have just been normal behavior.

John Carpenter's 1986 action-comedy "Big Trouble in Little China" is a pretty strange movie that has earned a special place in the hearts of fans as a cult classic. In it, truck driver Jack Burton (Kurt Russell) becomes entangled in a battle against ancient evil with his friend and pseudo-sidekick, Wang Chi (Dennis Dun). Instead of being an all-out action hero, however, Jack is actually really kind of Wang Chi's sidekick, cracking wise and getting the girl but never doing much in the way of fighting. He's an all-American hero archetype despite this, and apparently, it's at least partially because Russell was channeling Western movie legend John Wayne.
In his interview book, "John Carpenter: Prince Of Darkness," Carpenter explained that he and Russell decided that he should play the character like the famous Western actor because Wayne had a certain kind of "blowhard" attitude that worked perfectly. By playing Jack Burton...

The Thing, Big Trouble in Little China, and Escape from New York. These are the holy trinity of John Carpenter/Kurt Russell collaborations and are generally seen as anything from best cult film of all time to the best horror movie of all time. The Thing would get a prequel movie but that was only after years of being unappreciated and it would take a re-evaluation for that movie to come to life. Big Trouble wouldn’t even get that as the IP would die at the box office and stay dead to the creators. While all 3 would share some form of a collection of video game tie-ins, comic books, toys, and board games, only Escape from New York would get the direct sequel treatment, and even that was 15 years later. While it is not usually held in the same regard as its oft-imitated predecessor, it’s slowly gaining traction...

Kevin Costner and Kurt Russell have long been two of Hollywood’s biggest action stars, and their collaboration in 3000 Miles to Graceland should have been the ultimate combination. Both actors had long been considered A-listers, with Costner enjoying a prime run of hits like The Untouchables, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, and Dances with Wolves, while Russell’s filmography included Tombstone, Big Trouble in Little China, and Tango & Cash. So, when they teamed up for 3000 Miles to Graceland, it seemed like a surefire way to give audiences an unforgettable ride of mayhem, heists, and revenge. However, the film’s tone and execution resulted in one of the most divisive action films of the early 2000s.
However, while the film’s critical reception was scathing, it found a cult following among audiences who appreciated its over-the-top action, wild plot twists, and absurd humor. Many fans have since embraced...

Fun fact: I saw Freaky Tales over a year ago at the Sundance Film Festival. In a fest known mostly for prestigious fare, it was a refreshing change of pace, with it a fast-paced action flick set in Oakland in 1987 that followed four interconnected stories over the course of one violent night. Despite mostly solid reviews, this one has sat on the shelf for a while, but now Lionsgate is giving it a theatrical release on April 4th.
Directed by Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden, in their follow-up to Captain Marvel, the film stars Pedro Pascal, Jay Ellis (Top Gun: Maverick), Ben Mendelsohn, and the late Angus Cloud (Euphoria). As shown by the trailer, this is a fun, fast-paced flick, that tells four inter-connected tales over the course of a single night in Oakland. Tim Allen playing the bad guy is not what we've come to expect. For decades, Allen embodied the quintessential suburban dad while grunting through home improvement mishaps on television. He also voiced one of the most recognizable animated characters ever known and loved, Buzz Lightyear. But there was a moment in Allen's career when he flipped the script for 2008's mixed martial arts (Mma) movieRedbelt, written and directed by David Mamet, a clever wordsmith known for Glengarry Glen Ross, American Buffalo, and other acclaimed plays and films.
Typically, Allen portrays the warm protagonist, slightly flawed but good-natured. That's not to say he hasn't played characters with more of an edge in a few works, such as Jason Nesmith in Galaxy Quest and the profane losers Eliot Arnold in Big Trouble and Larry Roth in El Camino Christmas. But Redbelt is the only time he played a conniving villain. Allen's cynical,...

Dragon Ball DAIMAmay awkwardly be crammed between Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball Super’s events, but its story and character development have redefined what audiences thought they knew about this universe. Dragon Ball Daima is set before Dragon Ball Super’s events, which limits the anime in some respects and prohibits characters like Goku and Vegeta from using the godly transformations that they don’t achieve until later on.
That being said, Dragon Ball Daima is still full of powerful characters — both old and new alike — who are making waves through the Demon Realm. Goku, Vegeta, and other strong Dragon Ball characters may throw their weight around in Daima, but they wouldn’t be nearly as successful against Dragon Ball Gt’s Omega Shenron. Omega Shenron is Dragon Ball Gt’s final villain and someone who is strong enough to wipe out the entire universe. This also means that...

John Carpenter, the writer/director behind classic comedy adventure "Big Trouble In Little China" (1986), starring Kurt Russell as 'Jack Burton', isn't too keen about the long-delayed sequel to his film, after being left out of the creative process. Dungeons & Dragons is one of the most iconic pieces of fantasy media ever created. It draws on tropes from genre classics and has influenced the tropes of many more. However, D&d campaigns have a very particular feel to them. They're not polished tales created by trained writers.
Instead, Dungeons & Dragons campaigns tend towards a lighter, more chaotic tone. A group of players is given total freedom with their goals, tastes, and ideas. This is unlike many fantasy movies. That said, a similar tone does exist in some fantasy movies that feel just like tabletop gaming sessions.
Updated on January 24, 2025, by Chen Drachman: Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is out there, to the great delight of many fans. This gave us an opportunity to revisit this list and add some additional chaotic, adventure-filled, ensemble-driven entries.

Studios and networks proceed very carefully when it comes to selecting a release or premiere date for movies and television shows. Obviously, there are some no-brainers: when Marvel comes hurtling into the marketplace with a mega-tentpole like "Avengers: Endgame," you know it's targeting the outset of the summer movie season. But when it comes to a less star-studded effort like, say, "Captain America: Brave New World," it might lock in on a less spectacle-laden time frame like February or March, where there won't be such fierce competition for screens. Meanwhile, with television in the age of miniseries and short season orders, networks and streamers can now use the whole calendar year instead of going heavy in the fall.
It's all a matter of timing. And sometimes all the strategizing in the world can be rendered irrelevant when an unpredictable global event knocks the world off its axis. When the attacks...

Akira Toriyama’s Dragon Ball seems only to become more popular thanks to rejuvenating new franchise additions like Dragon Ball Daima. Dragon Ball Daima, while set between Kid Buu’s defeat and Dragon Ball Super’s start, has introduced a wealth of new threats, allies, and transformations. Some of Dragon Ball’s characters have never seemed more powerful than in Dragon Ball Daima, and it’s exciting to consider what’s to come by the anime’s end.
Dragon Ball Daima hasn’t struggled when it comes to creating intimidating challenges for Goku, Vegeta, and the rest of its heroes, but this doesn’t mean that they’d be able to survive against some of Dragon Ball Super’s strongest. Dragon Ball Super really goes above and beyond with some of its characters – particularly Universe 11’s Jiren – and this Tournament of Power competitor would make swift work of Dragon Ball Daima’s best.

Rhino has unveiled a new David Lee Roth box set, The Warner Recordings 1985-1994, arriving on vinyl and CD on February 21st.
The 5-lp and 5-cd box sets house Roth’s solo recordings following his exit from Van Halen in 1985, beginning with the Crazy from the Heat EP and its hit song “Just a Gigolo.”
Dlr followed that up with the successful Eat ‘Em and Smile LP in 1986, featuring Roth teamed up with an all-star backing band featuring bassist Billy Sheehan, drummer Gregg Bissonette, and guitar virtuoso Steve Vai. Roth then went on to release three more LPs on Warner including 1988’s Skyscraper, 1991’s A Little Ain’t Enough, and 1994’s Your Filthy Little Mouth.
Of note for collectors, the upcoming vinyl box set will contain the first-ever repressing of Your Filthy Little Mouth, which was only released on vinyl in Germany in 1994, making it a scarce and pricey original pressing.

It’s been Cruz’s biggest moral dilemma, and it has weighed heavily on him. How could it not? But he was able to move on, comfortable that his decision allowed his brother to chart a better life for himself.

John Carpenter stands as one of the greatest directors of all time. His films have changed the face of movies, and works like Halloween and The Thing have defined the horror genre for generations. His lean, efficient style combined with creative and original stories to create a body of work that continues to influence new filmmakers today. Despite that, his career was dogged by a studio system that simply doesn't understand filmmakers of his stripe, and his efforts at big-budget filmmaking rarely hit hard at the box office.
Many of the movies now regarded as his very best, like Big Trouble in Little China, In the Mouth of Madness, and The Thing have found their audience over time, on video or cable rather than in theaters. Strangely enough, that aspect of his work appears strongest in one of his secondary efforts. 1995's Village of the Damned has all the hallmarks of his best work,...

VFX artists share how a balance of practical and digital techniques employed in a classic John Carpenter and Kurt Russell feature created visuals that would fit alongside later technological developments. Carpenter is known for helming influential, genre-defining features, including Halloween, They Live, and The Fog. He is a celebrated director because of his lasting impact on the horror genre. Carpenter and Russell began their working relationship with an unlikely project in the form of Elvis, a 1979 TV movie where Russell portrayed the singer looking back on his life and career.

Acclaimed actor and action star Kurt Russell, star of such cinematic classics as The Thing, Escape from New York, Big Trouble in Little China, the Fast and Furious movies, Death Proof, the MCU, and much, much more, evidently makes a crowd-pleasing Santa Claus as his Christmas Netflix outing has now made its way into the top 10. Released in 2018, The Christmas Chronicles stars Russell as a gruff, but no less magical, version of Santa, who must save the festive season with the help of a couple of kids after his souped-up sleigh is wrecked.

General Hospital predictions suspect Lucas Jones may take the fall for the tragic and sudden death of his sister, Sam McCall, on the ABC soap.
Sam McCall’s Shocking Death on General Hospital

Usually, doctors don’t operate on family members but Sam was adamant. So, he agreed to do the surgery. Everything went perfectly in the operating room and her recovery was going smoothly.
Then, suddenly, Sam took a turn for the worse on General Hospital. Sadly, she suffered a heart attack and died. Of course, this came as a huge shock to the doctors and Sam’s family, especially Lucas.

Old action movies are never too far from the top of the charts on free streaming platforms, and Kurt Russells 1996 action-thriller Executive Decision has found new success on Tubi. The by-the-numbers suspense movie, which sees Russell as an intelligence analyst joining forces with Steven Seagals military colonel to take on a group of terrorists who hijack a plane carrying a deadly chemical weapon. The 90s box office hit was not a unanimous success with audiences and critics, but sometimes it really doesnt matter.

The first footage from Rick and Morty season 8 might not give away much, but it does imply that the series could take another stab at parodying a famous sci-fi franchise. In its 11 years on the air, Rick and Morty has taken aim at almost every sci-fi series, trope, and clich under the sun. The anarchic Adult Swim series began life as a ribald parody of Back to the Future, and its first few episodes spoofed Inception, Jurassic Park, Fantastic Voyage, and David Cronenbergs entire oeuvre. Rick and Mortys season 7 ending proved that this hasnt changed since.

Escape from New York takes place in a dystopian future where Manhattan has been converted into a maximum-security prison. John Carpenter began his career with a little student-film that ballooned into a surprisingly influential, strange feature debut. Dark Star was the promising (albeit rusty) start of a truly mind-blowing run of genre films that spanned from 1974 to 1988. In this span of time, Carpenter delivered Halloween, The Thing, Prince of Darkness, and Big Trouble in Little China, among others. This 11-film stretch defined his career forever, as all of those films have grown in reputation, reclaimed as masterpieces or cult classics that were misunderstood in their time.

In the 1970s, John Carpenter began a legendary run of action, horror, and science-fiction movies that stretched out over ten years. Most fans would probably limit this from his second feature, Assault on Precinct 13, to They Live in 1988. Within this run, you have genre classics such as Halloween, Escape From New York, The Thing, and Big Trouble in Little China. But Carpenter's masterful influence over genre filmmaking was already locked into place with his very first movie, Dark Star.

Tim Allen hasn’t been making a ton of movies or TV shows lately, but he has been making a lot of headlines for being a giant asshole. There were the reports that Allen previously threw his Home Improvement co-star Patricia Richardson under the bus during contract negotiations with ABC, allegations that he exposed himself to “Tool Girl” Pamela Anderson in 1991 and claims that he was “so fucking rude” while working with Casey Wilson, which seems especially egregious because he was literally dressed like Santa Claus at the time.
So it’s not entirely shocking that a new anecdote about Allen being a dick to his collaborators just dropped.
As reported by Slash Film, director Barry Sonnenfeld’s newest book, Best Possible Place, Worst Possible Time: True Stories from a Career in Hollywood, describes the process of making the 2002 film Big Trouble. The largely forgotten crime comedy starred Allen, as...

Celebrated actor and Everything Everywhere All At Once star James Hong met newfound fame after playing baddie David Lo Pan in Big Trouble in Little China. The fiery 1986 action film, starring Kurt Russell, Kim Cattrall, and Dennis Dun, became a cult classic over the decades and the role of David Lo Pan, sinister as he was, quickly became one of Hongs most iconic roles.
But in a recent MovieWeb interview promoting the second season of Gremlins: The Wild Batch, in which Hong plays Grandpa in the popular sequel series, Hong admitted he wasnt sure hed even be cast, noting:
Obviously, playing David Lo Pan in Big Trouble in Little China was a high point in my life. I remember auditioning for that. I did my dialogue as Lo Pan, and I said, I can show you a little Kung Fu. And he [director John Carpenter] said, No, no, no, you don't need to.

Tim Allen is a complicated figure for a lot of folks of a certain age. Tim "The Toolman" Taylor on "Home Improvement" turned him into a beloved TV dad, voicing Buzz Lightyear in "Toy Story" made him synonymous with the childhoods of a generation, and perhaps most importantly, he's Santa Claus. He's also an actor who has been very open about his conservative political beliefs, going so far as to star in the right-wing sitcom "Last Man Standing" for nine seasons. This makes him a polarizing presence in the overwhelmingly left-leaning Hollywood, but Allen's controversies are far worse than his views on the American government.
In Pamela Anderson's memoir "Love, Pamela," she noted that Allen flashed her on the set of "Home Improvement" when she was only 23 and claimed, "He said it was only fair because he had seen me naked.

Nine years ago, writer/director Jason Krawczyk brought the world the horror comedy He Never Died, which introduced viewers to a badass immortal character named Jack (played by Henry Rollins), who had been around for thousands of years. This character had franchise potential that Krawczyk and Rollins were well aware of; they were planning to continue his story through a feature sequel and an eight episode mini-series. But for some reason, they were never able to get a follow-up off the ground, and Krawczyk’s sequel script ended up being rewritten into a film called She Never Died, which focused on a different character and wasn’t directed by Krawczyk. According to online trivia, the action comedy thriller Don’t Mess with Grandma (which Krawczyk wrote and directed under his preferred title of Sunset Superman) is a project that grew out of the filmmaker’s frustration over the He Never Died franchise not gaining traction.

While kung fu movies have cycled in and out of popularity, they have also created an influx of many great parody films of the genre. Kung fu and martial arts films saw a significant rise in favor in the 1980s and 1990s, with hundreds of movies produced then. Audiences appreciated the typically likable and underdog heroes, as well as the intense choreography and kung fu techniques featured in the movies. Many iconic kung fu film stars even practiced the martial art in real life, adding realness to their performances.
However, the stylized and well-known martial arts genre also provided lots of material for spoof films. Kung fu parody movies often focus on mocking any combination of the genre's stunts, filming style, language, and intense tone. These films also became quite popular, subverting a genre with which many had grown familiar. Even notable kung fu stars like Jackie Chan pivoted from...

The cast of the 1993 film Tombstone was crucial in bringing the iconic Western to life. Tombstone is based on the true story of Western lawmen and outlaws from the 1880s. The movie retells the historical gunfight at the O.K. Corral and the ensuing Earp Vendetta Ride, focusing on the infamous Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday. It was released during a Western movie boom, and although it only had a $25 million budget, Tombstone earned $73.2 million worldwide, making it a financial success.
Director George P. Cosmatos' Western has since become a classic and beloved film. The iconic quotes in Tombstone make it highly memorable. It is even considered to be one of the best films in the Western genre. This popularity is strengthened by the strong performances of many cast members tied to both the Western and action genres.

John Carpenter's 1986 action-comedy "Big Trouble in Little China" is an odd duck. The plot involves an ancient wizard named Lo Pan (James Hong) who aims to kidnap, marry, and then sacrifice a green-eyed woman to break a curse he is under. The woman in question is Miao Yin (Suzee Pai), the fiancée of Wang Chi (Dennis Dun), who, fortunately, knows a little bit about evil wizards and ancient Chinese warriors. It will be up to Wang to rescue Miao Yin from Lo Pan. Also kidnapped is the green-eyed Gracie (Kim Cattrall), beloved by the dumb-as-rocks blowhard Jack Burton (Kurt Russell), essentially Wang's sidekick.
The gag of the movie is that Jack doesn't really seem to understand that he's a sidekick, and behaves like the action hero. Indeed, the whole movie seems to be a martial arts movie told from the perspective of the American guest star. Russell was featured...

The central joke of John Carpenter's 1986 martial arts comedy "Big Trouble in Little China" is that the himbo hero Jack Burton (Kurt Russell) thinks he's the main character of the story, when really he's the dorky, comedic sidekick to other people. One should acknowledge that Wang Chi (Dennis Dun) is the true hero of "Big Trouble," and it is ultimately his heroism that saves his fiancée Miao Yin (Suzee Pai) from the clutches of the evil warlock Lo Pan (James Hong). Wang Chi is the one with fighting skills, as well as the one with connections to other magic users. Jack Burton is a silly blowhard with the muscles to fight off bad guys and the know-how of a golden retriever.
Needless to say, "Little China" is quirky and charming. It remains the most whimsical of John Carpenter's output. Indeed, it may be the only comedy film Carpenter directed...

With the passing of Donald Sutherland, I was looking through his catalogue for stuff I hadn’t seen yet as I like to look at the entire catalogue to find some hidden gems. What I was reminded of while looking was his stellar horror output over the years. Fallen, The Puppet Masters, Don’t Look Now, Virus, the Salem’s Lot TV miniseries, and of course Dr. Terror’s House of Horrors are all fun to great but for my money, his turn in Invasion of the Body Snatchers (watch it Here) and really the movie in general, is his best stuff. After buying the wonderful 4K from Kino Lorber and rewatching it, I’m also ready to crown it as the best San Francisco based horror movie too. In the 1990s, Tim Allen was one of the biggest family comedy stars in the game. Beginning his career as a stand-up comic at the Comedy Store, his brand of family-friendly, relatable comedy made him stand out from his contemporaries. This led to ABC building a sitcom around him, Home Improvement. The show, where he played Tim “The Tool Man” Taylor, became one of the biggest shows of the nineties, regularly ranking near the top of the Nielsen ratings. It wasn’t a critical darling, but families loved it, with Allen becoming a household name.
However, his career hit a turning point in 1994 when he signed on to star in Disney’s The Santa Clause, where he played an everyday businessman who becomes the heir apparent to Santa’s mantle. The film was a total smash, making him a movie star overnight. The following year, he voiced Buzz Lightyear in the first Pixar movie,...

Prince of Darkness showcases Carpenter's interest in quantum physics and the intersection of science and horror. Prince of Darkness slowly builds tension through character development and scientific concepts, leading to a pessimistic conclusion. Carpenter's use of scientific ideas, supernatural elements, and gore create what is arguably the director's most underrated horror movie experience.
Most people associate John Carpenter with his groundbreaking 1978 slasher Halloween, and might know about some of his other more famous titles, like The Thing. Eddie Murphy has a lot of standalone movies that are great like Trading Places, Harlem Nights, and the more recent Dolomite is my Name, but he’s also been a bit of franchise gold in the past. Obviously, Beverly Hills Cop is the biggest and most recent example, but he’s also been part of 2 48 Hours movies, a couple Nutty Professor flicks, a couple Doctor Dolittle movies and is an integral part of the mega franchise that is Shrek. While we unfortunately have to call Coming to America a franchise now after that abysmal rehash that Amazon dropped on us, there is another movie and character that I actually wouldn’t mind being brought back and has potential, under the right writer and director combo, to be a fun time and maybe even fix some of the mistakes from its predecessor. Kurt Russell's role in Escape from New York paved the way for characters like Solid Snake in Metal Gear Solid. A 1990s Kurt Russell thriller has more in common with the Metal Gear Solid franchise than its more obvious inspiration, Escape from New York. John Carpenter and Kurt Russell's movies were a truly blessed run, resulting in classics like The Thing and Big Trouble in Little China.
