The recap of the film The Color Purple starts in 1909 Georgia, sisters Celie (Phylicia Pearl Mpasi) and Nettie (Halle Bailey) sit in a tree, engaging in a clapping game called "Huckleberry Pie" before heading to church with the rest of the town for their Sunday service featuring "Mysterious Ways."
The Color Purple Movie RecapCelie, pregnant with her second child by her father Alfonso (Deon Cole), gives birth to a son, Adam. However, Alfonso takes the baby away and gives him to another family, similar to what happened with Celie's previous baby, a daughter named Olivia.
Working at a shop, Celie spots Olivia with another woman, but when she tries to speak to the baby, Alfonso orders her to keep working. From a distance, Celie hopes for a future reunion with Olivia during "She Be Mine." Despite their struggles, Celie and Nettie find solace in each other as depicted in "Keep It Movin'.

The Color Purple's new adaptation is a soulful and inspiring musical that amplifies Celie's story of love and resilience. The musical numbers in the film beautifully merge Broadway elements with gospel and soul compositions. Each song in the movie, from "Huckleberry Pie" to "Superpower (I)," adds depth to the characters and advances the narrative.

Where do you stand on the 1985 film version of “The Color Purple,” which was nominated for 11 Academy Awards, but won none? Some feel it wasn’t Steven Spielberg’s story to tell. Others marvel at how a director of the upbringing depicted in “The Fabelmans” managed to recognize and reflect so many aspects of Black culture: the music, the spirituality, the multiple catharses to which it builds. Looking back, Spielberg did justice to Alice Walker’s Pulitzer-winning novel, but he also left room to expand and improve.
Now, nearly four decades later, a rousing new version arrives from director Blitz Bazawule, who collaborated with Beyoncé on her 2020 visual album “Black Is King.” Instead of rejecting what came before, the Ghanian filmmaker embraces and builds upon it, collaborating with Spielberg, Quincy Jones and Oprah Winfrey to update the material for the next generation (all three serve as producers). The main change,...

Specialty distributor Ariztical Entertainment has acquired the North American rights to New Zealand-set wholesome gay love story ‘Mysterious Ways.’ Ariztical plans a multi-platform digital release in 2024.
Written and directed by New Zealand’s Paul Oremland, the film follows a media storm that threatens the marriage between a Vicar, portrayed by Richard Short (“The Tragedy of Macbeth”) and his Samoan boyfriend, portrayed by Nick Afoa (“The Lion King”), after they announce their intentions to have a traditional wedding in the church.
The film also marks one of the first on-screen representations of what is known in the Samoan community as a fa’afafine. The character Billy is played by relative newcomer Joe Malu Folau. An integral part of Samoan culture, fa’afafine are assigned male identity at birth, but explicitly embody both masculine and feminine gender traits in a way unique to Polynesia.

It looked like a typical U2 outdoor concert: Two helicopters zoomed through the starlit sky before producing spotlights over a Las Vegas desert and frontman Bono, who kneeled to the ground while singing the band’s 2004 hit “Vertigo”.
This scene may seem customary, but the visuals were created by floor-to-ceiling graphics inside the immersive Sphere. It was one of the several impressive moments during U2’s “Uv Achtung Baby” residency launch show at the high-tech, globe-shaped venue, which opened for the first time Friday night.
The legendary rock band, which has won 22 Grammys, performed for two hours inside the massive, state-of-the-art spherical venue with crystal-clear audio. Throughout the night, there were a plethora of attractive visuals — including kaleidoscope images, a burning flag and Las Vegas’ skyline, taking the more than 18,000 attendees on U2’s epic musical journey.

Given U2’s reputation for pushing technical and creative boundaries with its live concerts, it seemed fitting that the band opened the anticipated Sphere in Las Vegas on Friday with its most ambitious and transportive live show ever: an electrifying live performance and visual odyssey that unfolds on Sphere’s enveloping 160,000-square-foot wraparound interior LED display.
Built for an estimated $2.3 billion, Sphere is a big gamble by Msg mogul James Dolan and Sphere Entertainment Co. The opening night of Sphere in Las Vegas represented a great many things. For James Dolan and his business partners, it was an opportunity to introduce their $2 billion investment to the world. For the live music industry, it was a chance to see if giant concerts could work outside of the stadiums and arenas that have housed them going back to the days of Beatlemania. And for Las Vegas, it was a test run of a grand new attraction that should bring tourists to the city for years to come.

U2 kicked off their “U2:uv Achtung Baby” residency at Las Vegas’ Msg Sphere on Friday night. The sphere, which cost $2.3 billion to construct, features a wraparound interior LED screen, 170,000 ultra-directional speakers that utilize beamforming technology to deliver targeted audio to every seat in the venue, and a haptic flooring system, among many other high-tech features.
Bono and co. made full use of these features as they ran through a 22-song set that included material from their 1991 studio album, Achtung Baby, as well as their new song “Atomic City” and classics like “Vertigo,” “Where the Streets Have No Name,” With or Without You,” and “Beautiful Day.”
Oftentimes, the 35-story building’s floor-to-ceiling screens would project Es Devlin and Brian Eno-inspired artwork, while fans were treated to a crystal clear street view of Sin City during their new Vegas-inspired song. At one point, moving visuals came down from the ceiling to suspend over the audience,...

U2 is kicking off their 25-night run at Las Vegas’ Sphere with U2:uv Achtung Baby Live At Sphere!
The legendary band kicked off their residency on Friday night (September 29) at the Sphere at The Venetian Resort in Las Vegas.
The setlist includes all of their classic 1991 album Achtung Baby, as well as tracks from Rattle and Hum, fan favorites, and a new song that the band released over the weekend, “Atomic City.”
Keep reading to find out more…
During the mid-section, Bono revealed that the band plans to focus on a different album during that section – much like Taylor Swift‘s “secret songs” section of the Eras Tour.
Variety speculates that the band may have gone with Rattle and Hum songs on opening night because the album’s producer Jimmy Iovine was in the audience, alongside stars like Kate Hudson, Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg, as well as Paul McCartney.

A Super Bowl commercial confirmed today what has long been suspected: U2 will take up residency in the brand-new Msg Sphere in Las Vegas for an immersive show that mines the band’s catalog.
U2 has been in a retrospective mood of late. Lead singer Bono has been making the rounds to promote his memoir, Surrender. On Friday, the band will release its long-awaited Songs Of Surrender ― a collection of 40 songs from across the band’s catalog, re-recorded and reimagined. And now, the band has confirmed the Vegas residency that will be focused on one of its most iconic albums.
Dubbed “U2:uv Achtung Baby Live At The Sphere,” the residency will celebrate the band’s darker, post-Joshua Tree turn that resulted in the 1991 album Achtung Baby and hits like “One,” “Mysterious Ways,” “The Fly” and “Even Better Than The Real Thing.”

The X-Files had a huge influence over television and our culture when it comes to science fiction. It directly inspired other huge shows like Strange World, The Burning Zone, Special Unit 2, Mysterious Ways, Lost, Dark Skies, The Visitor, Fringe, Warehouse 13, Supernatural, and Gravity Falls. It has also been referenced in or parodied on shows like 3rd Rock from the Sun, Archer, NewsRadio, American Horror Story, The Big Bang Theory, Bones, Breaking Bad, Californication, Castle, Family Guy, Hey Arnold!, King of the Hill, South Park, and Two and a Half Men.

This is the tour that would mark an historic occasion. Not only is it the 30th anniversary of U2’s phenomenally successful The Joshua Tree album, but the third time I was to see the band live. Yep, the hat-trick was in sight in London on Sunday, July 9, and as Twickenham Stadium, the home of English rugby, loomed large, it still wasn’t quite sinking in.
To be honest, I’d only decided late on in April to try and purchase tickets for this landmark tour. On the subject of punctuality, my apologies for only just getting around to writing this review – the traditional U2 withdrawal symptoms have only just left me. The Irish rockers’ previous two albums, 2014’s Songs of Innocence and 2009’s No Line on the Horizon, had left me somewhat underwhelmed. That’s not to say that they weren’t both decent efforts, but when you talk...

55 years ago today, audiences got to meet Pongo, Perdita, Patch, and 98 more spotted puppies when “101 Dalmatians” opened in theaters. The film is often credited with saving Disney Animation — 1959’s “Sleeping Beauty” under-performed at the box office, leading to massive layoffs. Roy O. Disney, Walt’s brother, even tried to convince Walt to shut down their animation department and shift focus to TV production. Fortunately for Baloo, Ariel, Simba, Elsa and all the animated Disney greats that were yet to come, “101 Dalmatians” was a box office hit — it was the 10th highest grossing film of 1961 in the U.S. and Canada. And the characters of “101 Dalmatians” have made their mark on pop culture in the 55 years since. Cruella de Vil, the movie’s villain who wants to turn the puppies into a dog-skin fur coat, ranked at #39 on AFI’s list of the top 50 movie villains of all time. Glenn Close...

We’re not entirely sure what’s going on here, but it looks like Penelope Cruz and her husband, Javier Bardem, had a grand ol’ time at the U2 concert on Saturday, Oct. 10, in Barcelona. Bardem, dressed in a feather boa and blue sparkly cowboy hat, jumped onstage with the band and showed off his sexiest dance moves, as Bono performed “Mysterious Ways.” The Gunman actor, 36, pretended to attempt to seduce Bono, while grinding against him. Cruz, 41, disguised in a blonde wig with bunny ears, then got [...]...

I finally did it: I saw U2 in concert.
I may have waited too long to catch the band in its prime, but its 37 years of experience -- without a personnel change -- and undiluted passion have made it one of the biggest concert draws for decades now, even if recent albums have been uneven in inspiration.
The current tour, with Thursday night being the next-to-last of eight shows at Madison Square Garden, is promoting last year's Songs of Innocence, which I mostly like. It figured that the annoying album opener, "The Miracle of Joey Ramone" (I wrote that it "panders like a commercial") would also be the concert opener (unless you want to give that honor to Patti Smith's recording "People Have the Power," which at all those shows is the song the quartet has walked on to, coming through the audience and climbing onstage). It’s going to be a huge moment when Jimmy Fallon takes over for Jay Leno on “The Tonight Show,” and he has an impressive debut roster of guests.
On February 17th, Fallon will welcome “After Earth” hunk Will Smith and “Mysterious Ways” rocker Bono to his new studio.
Additionally, Seth Meyers will ditch the “Saturday Night Live” gig and pick up for Fallon on “Late Night,” with former costar Amy Poehler as his inaugural interview.
Interestingly enough, the “Parks and Recreation” babe will also help Fallon close his time at “Late Night” as his final guest.

In honor of the 20th anniversary of the U2 album Achtung Baby, British magazine Q has put together a parallel cover album that so far we thoroughly approve of. Ahk-toong Bay-bi Covered goes out with Q's December issue, on sale today or available for order off Q's site. It features former U2 collaborator Trent Reznor, the band Garbage (who haven't produced anything before this since 2007), Patti Smith, and many more magical names from the vault.
To whet your appetite, we've posted all the tracks leaked so far (full tracklist below). Depeche Mode's "So Cruel" and Jack White's "Love Is Blindness" are our reigning favorites, but we wouldn't kick any of these out of bed, if you know what we're saying. Mainly because they're songs and you can't kick songs out of bed, but also, we're saying, because they're all pretty good.

In the latest of our comprehensive series of reviews of DC Comics' 52 relaunched titles, we take a look at Green Lantern: New Guardians #1. Who's it by?
Green Lantern: New Guardians #1 is written by Tony Bedard (R.E.B.E.L.S.) and drawn by Tyler Kirkham (Mysterious Ways). What's the history?
Green Lantern has a history back to 1940, with the introduction of the magic ring-wielding Alan Scott. The concept was revamped in 1958 into its more familiar and modern form, introducing Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps. When Jordan was corrupted, taking up the mantle of Parallax and dismantling the Corps, the one remaining power ring passed to artist Kyle Rayner, who first appeared in Green Lantern (vol 3) #48 in 1994, created by Ron Marz and Darryl Banks. The character was very different from his predecessors (more)...

As the Toronto Film Festival winds down, I want to tell you about one last movie I saw there — a movie that, for me, turned out to be the most surprising one of the festival. I went to a showing of From the Sky Down, a documentary about U2 directed by Davis Guggen- heim, with more or less one thought in my head: Do I really need to see another U2 documentary? There was U2: Rattle and Hum (1988). There was the concert film U2 3D (2008). There was the edition of VH1′s Classic Albums in which the Edge showed you...

Hey, how much do you like U2? A lot? Did you help contribute to their historic 360 touring run? Do you hope and pray to hear "One" and "Mysterious Ways" and "Acrobat" in a big way? And, perhaps, do you have about $630 to spare? The Irish rockers are preparing a traditional and expanded reissue on their 1991 album "Achtung Baby" for its 20th anniversary, and by "expanded" I mean death-defyingly excessive. Or Uber Deluxe, if you're their handlers. This six-cd, four-dvd, five-7" boxed kit may not get you out of the woods when and if you get lost, but it...

WSJ U2 at New Meadowlands Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J.
There was a rumor that Bruce Springsteen would make a special appearance at the latest stop on U2’s 360º tour, New Meadowlands Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J., but it didn’t happen. No matter. U2 electrified the massive, sold-out venue on its own.
But frontman Bono did thank “The Boss” for loaning them the New Jersey stadium, and during the encore, he paid tribute to Springsteen’s late saxophonist,...

Suchat Pederson / The News Journal Bono at the Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia
Over the course of two hours at U2′s 360 Tour show last night in Philadelphia, Bono mentioned Burma, the Middle East and AIDS in Africa. He devoted songs to Gabrielle Giffords (her husband Mark Kelly made a taped appearance from space) and Nelson Mandela. Amnesty International members brought lanterns out on the stage and Burmese political prisoner (released last November) Aung San Suu Kyi made a videotaped impassioned plea.

Top Cow Productions has released a teaser for a new project, Mysterious Ways. The image shows pictures of nine infamous murderers - including John Wayne Gacy, Charles Manson, Ted Bundy and Jeffrey Dahmer - with the caption, "Who will be our saviour?" Writer Jason Rubin and artist Tyler Kirkham's title was announced at Comic Con International last year. Its first issue appeared in the First Look trade paperback last October. "Mysterious Ways is a story that follows a brutal yet reluctant serial killer convinced that he is doing God's work by wantonly slaughtering innocent women," said the publisher in its solicitation. Last night (October 25), U2 took the stage at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California, for the latest stop on their U2 360 tour (in support of their latest album No Line on the Horizon). But the crowd wasn't limited to the 96,000 or so who filled the home of the University of Southern California football team last night, as they streamed the show live on YouTube. It was an unprecedented event for both the band and the video hosting site, and it allowed millions of people on all seven continents to watch the show live. (The show will also be archived at the site, so if you missed it live you can still experience it.) The band's 24 song set included hits like "Vertigo," "Sunday Bloody Sunday," "One" and an absolutely stunning rendition of the Achtung Baby track "Ultraviolet (Light My Way)." During the show, Bono often played directly to the cameras capturing the concert for the Web,...

There was a ton of buzz surrounding last night's U2 show at Giants Stadium in New Jersey last night. It wasn't so much that it was the first New York-area stop for the band's massive "360" tour (though that was a big part of it), but there was a great deal of speculation about how Bono would celebrate Jersey folk hero Bruce Springsteen's 60th birthday yesterday. After all, it seemed as though it would be impossible for the group to play a show without tipping their collective hat to the Boss.
While Springsteen didn't step on the stage at Giants Stadium during the over two hour show, Bono did wish Bruce a happy birthday and swapped out "she" for "he" during the chorus of "She's the One." MTV News' Rachel Josue was at the show live and snagged a bit of video, so jam on "Mysterious Ways" while you get...

Even the biggest rock star on the planet could be drowned out by the sound of 60,000 people singing, "And I still haven't found what I'm looking for." So, Bono let the crowd do his job for him.
U2 played the first of their New York-area shows Wednesday night at Giants Stadium. Beginning with "Breathe," a tune from their latest album No Line on the Horizon, the show roller-coastered from dance party to history lesson and back in the way that every U2 fan in the arena anticipated.
Three songs in, Bono paused to thank show openers, Muse, shouting out that they were #1 on iTunes in 24 countries (though they were only #3 on the U.S. charts).

"Don't you like vampires, little girl?" This week's episode of True Blood ("Frenzy"), written by Alan Ball and directed by Daniel Minahan, marks the penultimate installment of the second season (though we'll have to wait two weeks for the season finale) and consequently ramped up the tension, bringing us several new alliances, the deepening of a personal vendetta, a possible romantic split, and the fragmentation of several long-standing friendships. And, oh, a giant egg. So just what did I think about this week's episode of True Blood? Pour yourself a Tru Blood, strap on a bandolier, gather up some feathers and yarn, and let's discuss "Frenzy." Bon Temps has literally gone to hell, thanks to Maryann's influence and this week we finally got an answer as to why Maryann happened to stumble in the backwoods town in the first place. While it seemed as though Maryann's arrival in Bon Temps...

U2 are successful because of their "mysterious" relationships. Guitarist The Edge believes the band - also consisting of frontman Bono, bassist Adam Clayton and drummer Larry Mullen Jr. - have survived almost 30 years in the music industry because they can anticipate each other's onstage antics like a rehearsed dance routine. He said: "I'm acutely aware of what Adam, Larry and Bono are doing, whether or not we catch each other's eyes. "It's like some part of dance. There's an element of which is much more mysterious, which is the way the magic happens to be working that night. And you're only a small part of that." The Irish rockers are currently preparing to bring their '360 Degrees' tour...
