    Boring, yet sweet.

A bit boring at times, and whoever it was who played Uncle Danny's wife annoyed the heck out of me. But then, I suppose that was her job. When it started out, I I just wanted to go to sleep. But by the time it ended, I found my self thinking, "what a sweet little film". But, man, I must say, I was relieved when that woman died.

    Pure Eudora Welty

A beautiful film full of the richness and complexity of Southern life in the 1930s (?).The characters were beautifully portrayed and expressed the times, the concerns, desires, and needs of the Ponder family. Peter MacNichol was entirely believable as the beloved uncle whose only fault was his generosity. Angela Bettis clinched the innocent, pouting, yet headstrong Bonnie Dee. And JoBeth Williams did her best to hold the family together, while being cautiously aware of how life for the ponders seemed to be slipping away.

If you like the writing of Eudora Welty, you will love this film.

    A wonderful feel-good movie!!

This is a wonderful movie set in a small town where everybody knows everybody else's business, and in the middle of it all is Uncle Daniel Ponder. Daniel Ponder is perhaps the most sweet and generous man you will ever come across, willing to give his possessions to make other happy, for that makes him happy as well. His niece does all she can to keep the family together, before Daniel gives it all away. This movie is cute and exceptionally funny just where it needs to be, it's lighthearted, and at the same time mesmerizing. Peter MacNicol gives such a wonderful performance, and that sweet southern voice is to die for!! Being a fan of Mr. MacNicol, this is one film that is NOT to be missed.

    Pleasant surprise - NOT boring!

I was expecting another well-acted, though sluggish Masterpiece Theater drama, but was pleasantly surprised to find an engaging and well-paced comedy. I often laughed out loud-something I almost never do watching television. Ms. Coolidge presents an exceptional adaptation of Eudora Welty's novel, as do the cast. Peter MacNicol gives great comic touches to the character of the lovably eccentric Uncle Daniel. Angela Bettis in the role of the childish southern lower-class girl with uncanny precision. This is the sort of story that would have made great Capra-Stewart film, but this version is sure worth a look. If you enjoyed `Oh Brother Where Art Thou', you'll probably like this witty view of 1930's southern life as well.
