I’m old enough to remember when Jacques Rivette films were the domain of dark-web networks and substandard DVD rips, a conspiratorial network worthy of his cinema. It’s still a little strange seeing that April will feature a 10-film, one-short Criterion Channel program that combines of his canonized masterpieces with decidedly lesser-seens––plus Va Savoir, which I really hope is the recently unearthed four-hour cut for which there’s no substitute. Penélope Cruz is also subject of a retrospective in April, which––more than making me pine for a Rivette collab that never was––will include both Abre Los Ojos and Vanilla Sky, some Almodóvar, and another in the Channel’s ongoing let’s-add-a-Woody-Allen-movie campaign, Vicky Cristina Barcelona.

Tom Cruise is one of the most influential actors in recent times. Obviously, his Mission: Impossible movies are a big reason behind his fame. Since the first movie released in 1996, Ethan Hunt’s spy saga has become one of the longest running franchises in Hollywood.

In fact, Mission: Impossible 8 is queued for release in May this year. Incidentally, it is also one of the most successful franchises and Cruise’s hard work in the films shines through the screens.
He has broken many records with the movies, be it the crazy stunts that can turn fatalistic with the slightest misstep, or in the box office. However, there might be more to the franchise’s success story than that, and an old interview with Mission: Impossible 3’s co-producer gives an insight into that.

Raunchy rom-com There's Something About Mary is climbing the streaming chart, currently sitting at number six on Hulu. Starring Ben Stiller and Cameron Diaz, the comedy was directed by the Farrelly Brothers (Peter and Bobby), and became a massive smash hit when it premiered in July 1998. The film went on to earn nearly $370 million at the global box office against a $23 million production budget. It currently sits at a positive 84% critical and, surprisingly, only 61% audience on Rotten Tomatoes.
Following the success of Dumb and Dumber in 1994, and, to a lesser extent, Kingpin in 1996, the Farrelly Brothers went to work on There's Something About Mary, which starred Stiller as Ted, Diaz as Mary, and Matt Dillon as Healy. Years after a disastrous high school date with his crush Mary (you have to see it to believe it), Ted gets another chance years later when his best friend Dom (Chris Elliott) suggests he find her.

When Cameron Diaz retired from acting in 2014, fans thought they'd seen the last of the award-winning actress, but that all changed when it was announced in 2022 that she'd be returning for director Seth Gordon's Back in Action. Diaz stars in the Netflix hit alongside Jamie Foxx, with the duo portraying a pair of married ex-CIA operatives that are pulled back into active duty when their identities are compromised. Just how much money did it take to lure Diaz out of retirement, though? As it turns out, a lot.
An unearthed report from Bloomberg that goes deep into Netflix's production model revealed that Diaz was reportedly paid $45 million dollars to star in two movies for the streaming service, an amount that was agreed upon by the former film chairperson Scott Stuber before Dan Lin took his place in 2024. The 2000s were positively a weird time for movies. The nostalgia of the '90s was fading, but the future of filmmaking, particularly digital technology, hadn't quite taken over yet. This awkward period produced great films that were bold but often misunderstood, leading to mixed reviews or low interest. As they didn't quite fit the typical mold, some of them were left to be largely forgotten as time went on.
These are some of the most underrated movies of all time, and while barely anyone talks about them now, they still hold a special place in film history. Titles like Down with Love and Vanilla Sky captured something unique about the 2000s, even though they never received the attention they deserved. Despite slipping into the background of time and modern cinema, their distinctive storytelling and charm make them worth revisiting or discovering anew.

Netflix’s latest action comedy, Back In Action, boasts a stacked cast filled with heavyweight actors, but unfortunately, like numerous such forgettable Ott ventures, their talents are completely wasted by an unimaginative script. The movie focuses on a spy couple who leave their old life to turn a new page and decide to settle for a peaceful family life, only for the situation to spiral out of control and drag them back into the game. Instead of trying something new with this age-old premise, the movie mostly depends on nostalgia pandering through extremely dated characterization, which is seemingly drawn straight out of unfunny sitcoms. The makers perhaps intended the tone to be family friendly, but the way they went about it turned the movie into something that feels more like a caricature than an organic venture. There is a possibility that a sequel entry gets made, given there are several...

When Tom Cruise first saw Alejandro Amenábar's film Abre los Ojos (Open Your Eyes) at the 1998 Sundance Film Festival, he and his producing partner Paula Wagner immediately optioned the rights for an English-language remake, recruiting director Cameron Crowe for what would later become Vanilla Sky. But, like most English-language remakes, Vanilla Sky falls short of the original. Following his Goya Award-winning feature debut, Thesis, Amenábar's second feature film, Open Your Eyes, is a dizzying psychological thriller about an attractive, wealthy young man whose life is upended after a car accident that leaves him disfigured. Open Your Eyes explores the depths of the human consciousness, and dreams intertwine with reality as César (Eduardo Noriega) pursues the beautiful Sofía (Penélope Cruz) and tries to remember a crime he swears he didn't commit.

It didn’t take long for Tom Cruise to move past Nicole Kidman after their separation in 2001. When Kidman was reportedly aching over the breakup, Cruise got involved with Vanilla Sky co-star Penélope Cruz. Just months after his earlier relationship broke down, Cruise was seen on a vacation with Cruz, something he had allegedly planned with Kidman.

Timothée Chalamet’s new movie, A Complete Unknown, explores Bob Dylan’s early years and his rise to fame. In the early days, before movies became talkies, it was easy to show foreign films in the USA. Just insert new title cards in English, and film fans in St. Louis could watch and understand the latest offering from France or Germany. But then sound came and changed everything.
Of course, distributors in the United States could add subtitles or dub in new voices, but if they really wanted to sell the movie to an American audience, they could also just go ahead and make a new, English-language version.
Whether it is repurposing the Japanese classic Rashomon as The Outrage or taking Spain’s Abre los ojos and turning it into Vanilla Sky, producers in the USA are constantly scouring the globe for some hot property to acquire, rewrite, recast, and in so doing, capture a whole new audience.

Quick Links We May Be Closer to an 'Edge of Tomorrow' Sequel Doug Liman and Tom Cruise's Next Project Goes Deep
The sequel to Edge of Tomorrow, titled Live Die Repeat and Repeat, has been a long time coming for fans of the sci-fi action flick that saw Tom Cruise caught in an infinite time-loop, fighting against an alien invasion. The project was initially announced in March 2019, but a series of delays have led to it being in constant limbo. This has been attributed to Tom Cruise's schedule, continued attention to the Mission: Impossible franchise and Emily Blunt also facing consistent scheduling conflicts. Director Doug Liman also spoke about not wanting to return to the project unless he was excited about the script.
On the corporate end, despite Edge of Tomorrow becoming a fan favorite, Warner Bros. considered the box office performance 'modest'; it earned $370.5 on a $178 million budget.

Sometimes, the one thing we want out of movies is for them to play on our emotions, senses, and logical reasoning with enough aplomb and effectiveness to make us feel them in our bones — to physically overwhelm us, tense up our nerves, draw sweat from our palms, make our eyes open wide involuntarily.
No kind of movie does that better than a good thriller, whether we're talking tight, single-location potboilers that keep turning up the heat, mind-exploding puzzle films that make you guess and hold your breath for answers, gritty unsentimental crime capers, deep forays into disturbed and traumatized psyches, or carefully-plotted twist-o-ramas. There are countless great thrillers out there, but, if you're looking for a worthwhile one to queue up on Prime Video, you've come to the right place. Here, we've compiled a list of 15 excellent thriller movies available at no additional charge to U.S. Prime Video subscribers.

Tom Cruise has delivered some of the best dramatic acting throughout his extensive Hollywood career. The action movie star made a name for himself with films like Rain Man, Magnolia, Eyes Wide Shut, Jerry Maguire, and Vanilla Sky before becoming nearly synonymous with action, stunt work, and the Mission: Impossible franchise. But of all his films, Born on the Fourth of July stands out as a rare gem.

Despite his penchant for delivering constant box office hits, Cruise invited controversy with some of his more prominent films like Valkyrie and Interview With the Vampire. In the case of Born on the Fourth of July, however, it was not the film’s stance on the subject of war itself but Cruise’s acting that captivated the audience and caused sensationalism.

Hollywood might look like a sparkly big universe, but when you dig deeper, it’s more like a family reunion with A-list stars. Yep, you heard it right, many of your favorite Hollywood celebrities are secretly related and the connections are as wild as a plot twist in a soap opera. While we’re all familiar with the famous dynasties like the Kardashians or the Smiths, the web of celebrity connections goes beyond siblings and parents.
For starters, were you aware that there are celebrities who are cousins, sometimes super distant cousins, but still connected? That’s right, stars like Nicolas Cage, Emma Roberts, and Julia Roberts share family tree branches. And it doesn’t stop there. The list of Hollywood icons tracing their lineage back to royalty is too long. Who would’ve guessed our favorite action star might share DNA with a former US president? Crazy, right?

Every week, moviegoers are polled by a company called CinemaScore to see how they like new movies in theatres. Their opinions are averaged out, and the film is assigned a letter grade. If the movie scores in the A-range, it will likely prove to be at least a decent-sized hit. Movies scored in the B-range usually do mediocre business, although there have been plenty of hits that have scored this way, too – it might just mean that the movie inspires strong feelings, with some people loving it and others not. Anything below a C-rating is a disaster, unless it’s a horror movie, because for whatever reason, even hit horror movies typically have underwhelming CinemaScore ratings. Only 22 films have ever gotten an F, but a D rating is considered the kiss of death for your film, with Joker: Folie a Deux recently scoring a dreaded D. Only one movie that...

If there's one thing Tom Cruise is known for beyond being a movie megastar, it's doing his own stunts. There was a time when the star decided he wanted to be taken very seriously as an actor, and so we entered the age of "Eyes Wide Shut" and "Vanilla Sky" Cruise, during which time he did an admirable job in his more serious roles. But as his career continued, Cruise has leaned more heavily into his standing as one of the industry's premier action stars, most obviously by churning out a bewildering amount of "Mission: Impossible" movies that all hinge on the idea that the actor himself is performing the outrageous feats featured therein.
I write, of course, about such things as Cruise performing 13,000 motorbike jumps in order to prepare for his big "Mission: Impossible 7" stunt, or his plane stunt in "Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation" that saw the...

The science-fiction thriller film follows the story of Cruise’s David Aames, a vain publishing magnate, who begins to question his reality after an accident with his jaded lover, Julianna “Julie” Gianni, played magnificently by Diaz.

Cameron Diaz burst into the scene as Tina Carlyle in 1994's "The Mask," which quickly became one of the highest-grossing films of the year, thanks to pitch-perfect performances by the leads. Diaz's ability to hold her own opposite Jim Carrey emerged as a testimony in favor of her talents, which she channeled into the string of roles that succeeded her promising debut. Comedy and drama are undoubtedly Diaz's strongest suits: the actor knows exactly how to make a joke land while grounding the narrative with her innate charm, as exemplified by her performance in "There's Something About Mary," which earned her a Golden Globe nomination.
This, of course, doesn't mean that Diaz did not excel in roles that demand a more nuanced approach to a character. Cameron Crowe's divisive, yet intriguing "Vanilla Sky" puts the actor in a unique position to play someone deeply hurt and obsessed, who...

Tom Cruise has positioned himself as one of the greatest action stars of the last two decades thanks to franchise roles like playing Ethan Hunt in Mission: Impossible. As if we didnt already know that Cruise has the ability to draw a crowd, U.S. Paramount+ subscribers have been making it abundantly clear, as four of the stars movies are currently dominating the streamers Top 10 even though most of them have been on the platform for more than a year.
Top of the pile is 2022s highest grossing movie, Top Gun: Maverick, which is currently holding third position on the chart. The sequel to Cruises 1986 blockbuster suffered numerous delays during the Covid pandemic, and all the signs suggested that when it arrived the reaction would be quite muted in the same way as many other pandemic movies. Instead, Cruises return to the skies took off at Mach 10 and just kept going.

Stephen Belber wrote his story Tape as a play back in 1999, so it was always intended to get multiple interpretations over the years, with productions that would take place in different locations, with different casts and directors. Productions of Tape have been performed in Louisville, Kentucky; New York City; Dublin, Ireland; London, England; Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Williamstown, Massachusetts; Buxton, England; Orlando, Florida; Alexandria, Minnesota; and Tehran, Iran, among other places. When Cameron Diaz was still in high school, she signed her first modeling contract and appeared in ads for Levi's and Calvin Klein. She became recognizable nationwide when she appeared on the cover of Seventeen Magazine in 1990. Fittingly enough, she was actually 17. Diaz continued to model for a few years and even appeared in a Coca-Cola campaign before successfully auditioning for the role of Tina in Chuck Russell's comedic superhero noir "The Mask" in 1994. The star of "The Mask" was Jim Carrey, then experiencing a massive career upswing, and Diaz was swept up with him, becoming a household name almost immediately.
Diaz almost instantly became a media sensation, and her acting career took off. In the years after "The Mask," Diaz appeared in notable indie dramas like "She's the One," "The Last Supper," and "Feeling Minnesota," all of them with notable co-stars. By 1997, she moved into Hollywood's top tier,...

Mariah Carey is often regarded as one of the greatest singers of all time and her star status reached pinnacles in the ‘90s. Carey became the first singer ever to have her first five singles top the Billboard Top 100 charts and has been celebrated as one of the most successful artists of all time.
Carey’s off-screen personality has also made headlines, with her diva persona being one of the most talked-about things in her career. She reportedly had a feud in the late ‘90s with star Cameron Diaz who had allegedly called Carey’s music torture. However, all seems to have been good between the starlets now.

Netflix will bring Tom Cruise and Morgan Freemans divisive sci-fi action thriller Oblivion to a new streaming home on November 1. Joseph Kosinskis 2013 movie saw him collaborating with Cruise several years before they broke the box office with Top Gun: Maverick in 2022, and while the film did not garner the incredible reviews or theatrical gross of that sequel, it is still a movie that begs to be reassessed. The addition of the film to Netflixs library makes it the perfect time to do just that.
Set in the year 2077, Oblivion takes place on an Earth that has been devastated by an alien invasion decades earlier. The planet has been abandoned other than a few remaining outposts, and any remaining resources are being harvested for use on Titan where the remnants of humanity live. Tom Cruise has consistently shown a willingness throughout his career to apply his stardom to challenging projects and roles, beginning with his Oscar-worthy performance as Vietnam veteran Ron Kovic in the 1989 biographical drama film Born on the Fourth of July. With his performances as misogynistic dating guru Frank T.J. Mackey in the 1999 drama film Magnolia and cold-blooded assassin Vincent in the 2004 thriller film Collateral, Cruise also proved that he was unafraid to subvert audience expectations by playing unsympathetic characters.

The legacy of Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt can almost be considered predestined in Hollywood – so powerful is their impact on the industry today. However, the problem with legends is that there can only be one of them at a time. And the world will never settle for knocking either Pitt or Cruise off the pedestal to raise the other.

There are two types of confusing movies. On one hand are those films that do confuse you while keeping you entertained so that even if you don’t “get it,” the viewing experience feels fruitful. Some examples that come to mind are Donnie Darko, Mulholland Drive, Memento, Predestination, Tenet, Coherence, and Nocturnal Animals. If you tell me to explain what was going on in these movies, I will probably fail miserably, but if you ask me if I am up for rewatching them again and again, I’ll say, “Hell yes.” That said, on the other hand, you have films that confuse you while forgetting to engage you in any meaningful way. I am talking about I’m Thinking of Ending Things, Under the Skin, Primer, Vanilla Sky, Lost Highway, and what I consider my arch-nemesis, Enemy. I’ve rewatched these films more than I have rewatched some of my...

The best kinds of cameos are ones that are totally unexpected, sandwiched between innocuous scenes or poised in the background as a blink-and-you'll-miss-it tidbit. Directors often make brief appearances in their own films, where some, like Alfred Hitchcock, feature in a chunk of their filmography (including showing up as a telephone operator in "The Lodger" and walking on the road with a trumpet case in "Vertigo"). Like Hitchcock, a handful of directors can be glimpsed in their own work — from Martin Scorsese to Peter Jackson — and they generally play smaller roles, except for some characters that gain prominence for storytelling or budgetary purposes.
Others, like Steven Spielberg, make quick cameos in films directed by their peers, such as his appearance as a man in an electric wheelchair in "Gremlins" or an alien gracing a TV monitor in "Men in Black." This, obviously, also extended to his own directorial efforts. For instance,...

Cameron Crowes 2001 sci-fi thriller Vanilla Sky is far from a forgettable movie, but not many people know the star-studded film is actually a remake and it pales in comparison. With a cast as talented as Vanilla Skys, featuring Tom Cruise as the protagonist with Penlope Cruz and Cameron Diaz in supporting roles, its hard to believe that the movie could disappoint. Tom Cruises appearance at the 2024 Olympics closing ceremony became one of the big talking points of the event, with the actor making a special and dramatic appearance to collect the Olympic flag and deliver it to its next destination of Los Angeles. While the production, which included pre-recorded footage of Cruise leaving Paris by plane and skydiving down to the Hollywood sign, seemed like the kind of big budget stunt that the actors Mission: Impossible movies have become known for, Cruise himself has a surprising pay packet for his appearance. Absolutely nothing.
While Cruise has been known as one of the highest paid actors in the business, it seems that he had one simple condition to do the whole thing for free he wanted to do his own stunts. This is hardly surprising considering the actors history of throwing himself off buildings, mountains, out of planes, and fighting on top of moving vehicles.
