Many of his recurring themes are present, and some of his visual fluidity – in this finely tuned commercial ‘shock’ movie with witty visual tricks from Hitchcock’s own background as an art director. And hey, he secured a real box office name to star as the mysterious maybe-slayer, ‘The Avenger.’

Looking back on this still-young century makes clear that 2007 was a major time for cinematic happenings — and, on the basis of this retrospective, one we’re not quite through with ten years on. One’s mind might quickly flash to a few big titles that will be represented, but it is the plurality of both festival and theatrical premieres that truly surprises: late works from old masters, debuts from filmmakers who’ve since become some of our most-respected artists, and mid-career turning points that didn’t necessarily announce themselves as such at the time. Join us as an assembled team, many of whom were coming of age that year, takes on their favorites.
In the Bible, Paul the apostle wrote in the first letter to the church at Corinth these words: “Man did not come from Woman, but woman from man. Man was not created for woman, but woman for man,...

1. “Master of None” (available May 12)
Why Should I Watch It? Aziz Ansari’s debut original series arrived in its first season as a progressive-minded, discussion-oriented, diverse, smart, cinematic, and very, very funny comedy. It’s honestly hard to imagine what more you could ask for a new television show these days, if only considering how many shows are begging for your attention. “Master of None” earns it, and quickly. Season 2 looks to be more of the same — meaning different, which is what we need.
Best Episode: Netflix has a tight lid on Season 2 episodes, but the embargo on reviews lifts Wednesday, May 3, so expect to hear a lot more in a few days.

For Eric D. Howell, getting to direct Voice from the Stone has been a journey years in the making.
The Minnesota native has worked his way up in the business, getting his start as a crewmember in Saint Paul on films such as The Mighty Ducks and Mallrats and working lighting for fellow Minnesotan Prince.
"I didn't know enough to be intimidated by him. He kept asking me back," Howell says with a laugh of his younger days working with the late music icon.

For nearly thirty years, Daniel Clowes has been at the forefront of San Francisco’s second wave of underground cartoonists, first making waves with his anthology comic, Eightball, which ran for fifteen years. One of the many serialized comic stories in that comic was Ghost World, which was turned into a popular indie movie in 2001, directed by Terry Zwigoff and starring a very, very young Scarlett Johansson.
Five years later, Zwigoff and Clowes reteamed for the comedy Art School Confidential, also based on an Eightball story, and around the same time, Clowes shifted away from Eightball to writing and drawing stand-alone graphic novels.
One of those graphic novels was 2010’s Wilson, which Clowes has now adapted into a movie starring Woody Harrelson as its cantankerous title character, who goes on a quest to reconnect with his ex-wife Pippy (Laura Dern), and find their now-teen daughter Claire (Isabella Amara). It’s...

It’s going to be impossible to gauge exactly how many people showed up for the hundreds of women’s marches that were held across the world on Saturday. But aerials views shared to social media help grasp just how expansive the protest efforts were.
What began as a simple Facebook invitation to protest the election of president Donald Trump turned into a global movement on Saturday, as millions of women (and men) across the world took to the streets in solidarity.
Their signature event was the Women’s March on Washington, D.C., where than 500,000 people were expected to participate.

Adele has denied claims that she got married in secret.
The 28-year-old singer sparked rumours she and boyfriend Simon Konecki may have tied the knot under the radar after she was seen wearing what looked like a wedding band on her ring finger.
However, as she kicked off her U.S. tour to a sold out crowd at the Xcel Energy Center in Saint Paul, Minnesota, on Tuesday night (05Jul16), Adele told the audience that getting hitched isn't something she's planning to keep a secret.
Denying the claims she had wed, Adele laughed: "I would tell you if I did!"
According to onlookers, Adele was on fine form for the evening's show, kicking things off with her hit Hello before moving on to songs such as Hometown Glory and Someone Like You.

Originally premiering at the 2014 Berlin Film Festival, where it won Best Screenplay and a Jury Prize, Dietrich Bruggemann’s Stations of the Cross is one of the more underrated foreign theatrical releases of 2015. Receiving a paltry two week theatrical run in one theater at the end of July, the title didn’t find much of an audience, pulling in about fifteen hundred dollars. Though championed by director Paul Schrader, the title receives an equally demure DVD release and it will depend on word of mouth to direct more energy towards the complex drama.

The Road to Hell: Brueggemann’s Apprehensive Examination of Blind Faith
Premiering at the 2014 Berlin Film Festival, where it snagged the Ecumenical Jury Prize as well as Best Script, Stations of the Cross is Daniel Brueggemann’s fourth film, an icy depiction of faith-based agonizing. In the fine tradition of Ulrich Seidl’s dark tragicomedies dealing with religious fanaticism, the German filmmaker concocts a formidable denunciation of such archaic and ultimately dangerous belief systems, made all the more surprising considering the director’s general penchant for comedy in previous features. Named for the Via Crucis, Latin for the series of fourteen images of Jesus Christ on day of his crucifixion, the film is divided into the same number of chapters charting its protagonists ‘sublime’ sacrificial journey.

Manchester United have been told they must break their transfer record if they want Napoli’s Argentine international Gonzalo Higuain to be playing at Old Trafford next season.
Sky Sports claim the Italian club have insisted that the striker will only leave Stadio San Paolo if his £72m buyout clause is met after The Red Devils and Arsenal were linked with his signature.
If Louis Van Gaal was to successfully sign the former-Real Madrid star, he would have to top last year’s investment of £59.7m on Angel Di Maria, a deal that would take up a significant percentage of Dutchman’s summer transfer-budget.

The following extract by Pier Paolo Pasolini generously provided by Verso Books from their new release, "St. Paul," the first English translation of Pasolini's screenplay about the apostle Paul.
Self-portrait, Pier Paolo Pasolini, 1947
The poetic idea – which ought to become at the same time the conducting thread of the film – and also its novelty – consists in transposing the entire affair of Saint Paul to our time.
This does not mean that I want in any way to tamper with or alter the very letter of his preaching: on the contrary, as I have already done with the Gospel [of Matthew], none of the words pronounced by Paul in the film’s dialogue will be invented or reconstructed by analogy. And since it will naturally be necessary to make a selection from among the apostolic discourses of the saint, I will make this selection in a fashion that summarizes the entire arc of...

It is well known that the Christian reference played a role of primary importance in the formation of Pasolini’s thought, despite (or because of) the sexual and transgressive violence that inspired his personal life and bestowed a particular coloration on his communist political choices. In a certain sense, it was a sacrifice bordering on the sacred – the mysterious death of his brother, an Italian partisan, probably killed by the Yugoslav resistance at the moment of Liberation – that led both to his view of the judgement one can make on History, and to the severity he displayed, from the late 1950s on, towards the Italian Communist Party. Basically, the Pci was guilty in his eyes of having allowed the young...

Arsenal are on the brink. Despite their excellent and surprising start to the season, they could still fall at the final hurdle and fail to qualify for the knockout stages of the Champions League.
Having been drawn in the toughest group in the European competition probably in their history, the Gunners still top the group but need at least a point at San Paolo against Napoli. A tough assignment indeed, but having already won in Germany to beat last season’s finalists Borussia Dortmund this year, the Gunners should be able to secure a passage into the next round.
In previous seasons the club have typically been drawn against teams of lower standing and who they managed, just, to get enough points off to make it to the next round of the competition, only to fall at the first hurdle in the knockout stages. This season has...

Goalkeeper Pepe Reina will not return to Liverpool at the end of his season-long loan spell at Napoli, according to the Daily Star.
The 30-year-old’s Anfield career appears to be over after it was revealed he will instead re-join boyhood club Barcelona when his 12-month stint in Italy comes to a close.
Paperwork is being organised to ensure he doesn’t have to return to Merseyside and instead take him to the Nou Camp with sources close to the player claiming he will definitely not return to the Reds.
Reina is still fuming at the way his loan move to Napoli was orchestrated and claims Liverpool went behind his back.
He will re-join former Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez at the Stadio San Paolo until next summer, at which point he intends to go back to Barca, where his career first started.

According to Teamtalk.com, Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis has confirmed that Chelsea are interested in signing Edinson Cavani this summer.
Cavani, 26, has been linked with a summer move away from Napoli in recent weeks and despite the likes of Real Madrid and Manchester City reportedly showing interest in the striker, Stamford Bridge looks his most likely destination.
De Laurentiis has stated that he intends to keep the Uruguayan at the Stadio San Paolo but has promised that if a club meet Cavani’s €63 million release clause then the entire fee will be re-invested back into the Italian side.
De Laurentiis said:
“If Cavani is sold then I’ll reinvest all of the €63million (£53.5m) of his release clause. There is interest from Chelsea in Cavani, they’ll call me in the next few hours.”
He continued:
“I’ll be delighted if he stays, but if he leaves then he will be adequately replaced.

Let the duel begin. The cathedral bell has struck 10 by the time the night's rehearsal is ready to begin in earnest, after much work on the set: moving panels bearing a magnified, annotated 17th century script of Romeo and Juliet in Italian. Mercuzio and Tebaldo draw swords; with the agility of wildcats, they leap from position to position; clash swords, stab and retreat. Finally, the ponytailed actor playing Mercuzio – Armando Punzo, lithe for his fiftysomething years – slumps against a back wall.
Outside, the empty, narrow cobbled streets are quite silent in the beautiful hill-top Tuscan town of Volterra – a stillness through which footsteps echo loudly off the ancient stone. This place feels as old as time itself: the Etruscans were here,...

How much gas is left in the Fast and Furious movie franchise? I've never been the kind of guy to be excited about seeing Vin Diesel and Paul Walker shift gears in 70 mm, but judging from the action sequences in the fourth and fifth Ff movies, and the stuff we get to see in the two previews I'm about to show you, there's still plenty of road left down the action highway for these flicks.
The sixth movie (titled simply Fast and Furious 6, like the video game it longs to be) basically has two key marketing points going for it. First off, it manages to cram just about every character from the first five Fast anf Furious movies into its cast. (The only face missing is the lead actor from the third movie, Tokyo Drift, which is Lucas Black.) I'm guessing that film number 6 the The Avengers of the Fast and Furious franchise.

Detroit -- This time last year, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra was about a month removed from a contentious musicians' strike that worsened its already strained finances. Now, the rebounding organization aims to raise the roof – and hopefully $1 million – with help from a hometown musician known more for rock, rap and country than classical.
The orchestra will collaborate with Kid Rock on Saturday in a benefit concert at the Fox Theatre, down the street from the ensemble's Orchestra Hall home. Tickets start at $100, though VIP tickets fetch as much as $1,500 and include an afterparty with the genre-jumping artist who still lives in suburban Detroit.
Rock, who was born Robert Ritchie and grew up in Macomb County, Mich., is volunteering his services. So are Detroit Symphony Music Director Leonard Slatkin and orchestra members. Proceeds will help pay symphony musicians for community outreach and education efforts.

One night, nearly two decades ago, Nicholas Stoller, at that time a freshman at Harvard, dragged his mattress out of his room and into the room of his suitemate. Both young men had long-distance high school girlfriends whom they missed terribly, and they'd decided to have a sleepover to bond over their shared state of longing. During the sleepover, the suitemate decided to put on his prom song, “Always” by the English synthpop duo Erasure. The two listened as a ghostly plucking of strings filled the room, accompanied by a faint, mournful moaning, then a pulsing beat and quirky, digital squiggles of synthesizer funk. And soon, a high-pitched male voice, wavering and rising with emotion, swelling at the chorus: Always/I want to be with you/and make believe with you/and live in harmony harmony oh love. The song played, and they both cried.
Stoller laughs as he tells this story.

Andre Villas-Boas’ woes continued with a 3-1 Champions League defeat at the hands of Napoli in what was a helter-skelter match littered with defensive errors and settled by the clinical finishing of the Italian side’s two star forwards.
An Ezequiel Lavezzi brace and Edinson Cavani goal gave the home side the victory after Juan Mata had handed Chelsea the lead in a match that was extraordinarily open for this stage of the competition.
Both sides looked extremely vulnerable in defence throughout the night and there were plenty of chances at both ends in a wonderful spectacle for the neutral.
Chelsea had walked out into the imposing atmosphere of the Stadio San Paolo with expereienced players, Ashley Cole, Frank Lampard, Fernando Torres and Michael Essien all on the bench. It was a bold move from Avb and based on the performance perhaps not a wise one in such an hostile environment.

Team news ahead of Chelsea’s trip to Italy tonight when they take on Napoli at the Stadio San Paolo in the first leg of the second round of the Champions League. Kick-off for the game is 7.45pm and will be screened on Sky Sports 2.
Andre Villas-Boas is likely to be without captain John Terry who is a huge doubt for the game, despite returning to training yesterday (Monday) evening’s training session. Left-back Ashley Cole should field having recovered from a calf problem.

Better this World
Directed by Kelly Duane de la Vega and Katie Galloway
If Michael Moore had made Better this World we’d probably know Sarah Palin’s recipe for mixing the perfect Molotov cocktail – Alaskan style. But this sobering documentary is the work of Kelly Duane de la Vega and Katie Galloway and was first shown on PBS last month. It’s the story of two budding political activists who fell foul of an agent provocateur and America’s unforgiving political climate.
David McKay from Midland, Texas (home town of George and Laura Bush) and his childhood friend Bradley Crowder were just two ordinary guys who wanted to protest about the state of the nation. As the alarming prospect of a McCain/Palin Presidency loomed, McKay and Crowder went to the Republican National Convention in August 2008 and ended up in a heap of trouble.

Gwen Stefani ran errands with Kingston by her side in London today. It's Gwen's 42nd birthday and the No Doubt frontwoman, who was accompanied by her son and a friend, flashed a smile as she made her way back to their flat. Later, an oversized delivery of flowers was dropped off at the house. The lavish bouquet may have been from her husband, Gavin Rossdale, who unfortunately couldn't be with Gwen to mark the special occasion. He's been busy touring with his band, Bush, and the quartet is playing a show in Saint Paul, Mn, tonight. Gwen, Kingston, Gavin, and Zuma Rossdale have been spending time at their place in England lately, with plenty of trips back and forth to La, where Gwen has been working on No Doubt's reunion album. The Stefani-Rossdales recently met up with another American family in England, the Jolie-Pitts. Angelina Jolie and Gwen's kids had a playdate last week,...

Thirty-five women (and one man) sat at the edge of their seats in the Gold Ballroom at the Penn Plaza Pavilion Sunday morning as they listened to actor James Marsters' recitation of Shakespeare’s sonnet 18. It was so quiet that you could hear a wand -- brought for Tom Felton from "Harry Potter" to sign later, of course -- drop.
So unfolded Marsters' two-hour long "Bard Seminar" at the Big Apple Comic Con (Bacc) Spring Edition this past weekend. The convention, which was started in 1996 in the basement of the Church of St. Paul the Apostle, had humble beginnings, but it was bought by Wizard Entertainment in 2009 and has since gone above ground.
"Shakespeare, man… you're immortal because little did you know one day you'd be read by some TV actor," said Marsters, who played Spike, the bleach-blond vampire on "Buffy the Vampire Slayer." Noting that Shakespeare had written...
