Very excited yesterday to see a teaser emerge for Mexican antholgoy series La hora marcada. The series is a relaunch of a show that ran in Mexico from 1988 through 1990. It is considerd to be the launching pad for filmmakers like Emmanuel Lubezki, Guillermo del Toro and Alfonso Cuarón. Around this time last year we shared with you that the series was in production that that many of our friends in and from Mexico, and elsewhere in Latin America, were in the batch of young filmmakers brought in to create new frights for a new generation of viewers. Guillermo del Toro was given a rock star welcome at the Annecy International Animation Festival on Tuesday as he took to the stage to discuss his life long obsession with animation.
The Oscar-winning The Shape Of Water filmmaker and producer is at the French lakeside festival this year as one of the figureheads of special a focus on Mexican animation, alongside The Book Of Life director Jorge R. Gutierrez, producer Sofia Alexander (Onyx Equinox) and Guadalajara Festival head Estrella Araiza
Having recounted his early beginnings in the genre using his father’s Super 8, del Toro said he always thought he would work mainly in animation but instead got caught in live action for close to a decade, on TV show Hora Marcada and the film Cronos and breakthrough classics such as The Devil’s Backbone and Pan’s Labyrinth.
“Life had other plans and I didn’t come back to animation...

Much has been made about the fact Guillermo del Toro’s Oscar win for Best Director marked the fourth Mexican winner in five years. The statistic is all the more celebratory since the Mexican directors who won before del Toro happen to be his very good friends Alfonso Cuarón (“Gravity” in 2013) and Alejandro G. Iñárritu (“Birdman” in 2014, “The Revenant” in 2015). The directors are collectively known as The Three Amigos.
In Variety’s new cover story on del Toro’s Oscar win, both Cuarón and Alejandro G. Iñárritu celebrate “The Shape of Water” visionary and welcome him into the Oscars’ winner’s circle. Iñárritu first met del Toro almost 20 years ago when he was working on his first feature, “Amores perros.” Del Toro traveled to Mexico City to help edit the movie. According to Iñárritu, del Toro is still the same big-eyed dreamer he met nearly two decades ago.
“His wisdom has evolved,...

Visionary director Alfonso Cuarón was supposed to have a new film come out this year (his first since Children of Men), but Warner Bros. pushed the ridiculously enticing Gravity to 2013 to allow for more post-production work on the effects heavy sci-fi feature. As such, we likely won’t be seeing a new Cuarón property until awards season of next year, but the director isn’t content to just sit idle in the meantime. The Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban director has committed to produce and direct a new supernatural TV series for NBC alongside the unendingly prolific J.J. Abrams. Hit the jump for more details on the project. Per Deadline, Cuarón will team with Abrams on an untitled high-concept drama at NBC. The network has made a pilot production commitment to the project, and Cuarón is onboard to direct and co-write the pilot with Mark Friedman (Home of the Brave...
