Koji Suzuki's novel "Ring" was first published in 1991, and no one could have guessed that the simple, tech-based ghost story would spawn a decades-long, worldwide media franchise that incorporates multiple movies, crossovers, comics, audio dramas, and video games. If one does a deep dive into the entire "Ring" series, one will uncover a massively complicated mythos that repeatedly peels back layers of reality to reveal an onion-like media metafiction that Marshall McLuhan would be proud of.
The premise of "Ring" is wicked and fun, and would have been all the more terrifying in 1991 when VHS was still in vogue. In the book, an investigative reporter named Asakawa finds a cursed video cassette of a surreal, 20-minute short film. At the end of the video, a captain informs him that he has seven days to live. Asakawa takes the threat seriously, as several teenage girls who watched the video have already died.

Asian cinema has always had a degree of popularity in Western culture, but all too often they were done a huge disservice by being remade instead of shown in their original state.
That trend is changing drastically, with films such as Crazy Rich Asians finding success and leading viewers down the exciting pathway towards genuine Asian films. A post by Time reported that it was the first film by a major Hollywood studio that featured a majority cast of Asian descent in a modern setting since 1993 and that it had the potential to change Hollywood.
BFI suggest it was hard to find East Asian films in UK cinemas a couple of years ago, but that is a situation that’s now rapidly evolving. The Climbers is a recent release which our article explains was shown in cinemas across the United Kingdom.

We went hands-on (and legs-on) with Ring Fit Adventure. Here's how it went:
Warning: this article contains awkward images of a journalist exercising in a room full of people.
When Ring Fit Adventure was announced with that somewhat creepy trailer, many people assumed it to be a successor to Wii Fit or Wii Sports. Having had a chance to check out this new game at a packed-out Nintendo event in London, however, we're now able to report that Ring Fit Adventure doesn't really feel like a successor to anything - it's very much its own product, with unique ideas in abundance.
After signing in, making some small talk and climbing up several flights of stairs (which felt like a harsh extra level of warm-up), we found ourselves in a mock-up of quite a fancy living room. Sofas, lamps, and tables were dotted around, and a Nintendo Switch...

“I’ve always had lots of dreams when I sleep. The dreams have always been about the future.”
In 2002, the hype for Japanese horror films was declining rapidly, as the sequels to series like “Ring” or “The Grudge” were commercially and critically unsuccessful. Even though directors such as Hideo Nakata and Takashi Shimizu came to Hollywood to helm the remakes to their films or their sequels, Hollywood had already adapted J-horror tropes to its own productions. As Jerry White points out, one of the perhaps most disappointing entries in the J-horror remakes was Jim Sonzero’s version of Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s “Pulse” (2001). Perhaps it was this particular experience which made Kurosawa change genres with his next project “Bright Future”.
In general, Kurosawa is best known for his unique horror films such as “Pulse” or “Cure”, films which years after their release now unfold their true impact. At the same time,...

‘The Aftermath’ with Keira Knightley is another new opener.
Stephen Merchant’s solo directorial debut Fighting With My Family leads the openers at the UK box office this weekend, and will look to dethrone three-time champion The Lego Movie 2 from the summit.
The film, which premiered as a ‘secret screening’ in Sundance this year, follows a family of wrestlers from Norwich, as siblings Saraya and Zak work to make it in the WWE. Screen Stars of Tomorrow Florence Pugh (2016) and Jack Lowden (2014) lead the cast, which also includes Nick Frost, Lena Headey and executive producer and former wrestler Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson.

Asian films are among the best critically acclaimed movies on IMDb. Some of them are more than just good films, however.
Some movies made by Asian directors made a lasting impact on the world of cinema as well as on global culture as a whole. This a list of these kinds of movies.

Akira Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai and Ishiro Honda’s Godzilla were made in the 50s and don’t make it to the list of the most influential movies of the last 50 years. However, they are on the list of the most influential movies ever, and we can’t but briefly mention them.
These movies have shaped some aspects and genres of modern day cinema.
Have you ever seen giant monsters destroying a city? Think Transformers and the like. These only exist because of Godzilla’s imagery.
Seven Samurai created even more of an influence on cinema.

Kehlani parties at a snowy mountain cabin in her laid-back “Nunya” video. The clip follows the vocalist as she hangs out in the woods, gazes out at a scenic lake and hangs out with friends who smoke and shoot dice. Guest rapper Dom Kennedy appears throughout, riding shotgun in Kehlani’s car and performing his guest verse on a balcony overlooking mountains.
Kehlani tweeted Wednesday that she was seven months pregnant while shooting the visual. “Thank u baby for da motivation, mommy was Froze,” she wrote.

A new chapter in The Ring franchise is on the way as the first posters and teaser for Sadako are here. The title of this latest movie refers to the franchise's iconic, long-haired creepy well-dwelling figure, Sadako Yamamura. This marks her return following 2016's Sadako vs. Kayako, which saw The Ring and The Grudge franchises crossing over. This time around, it looks like she's going to be back up to her old tricks.
The teaser is very brief, but effectively creepy. It takes the found footage approach and sees someone with a handheld camera walking around in a dark, dank and spooky cave. They eventually come upon a small pocket of water and then the footage cuts to some familiar imagery to those who have dabbled with either the American or the Japanese version of the franchise. Viewers are then directed to a Japanese website for the movie before an...

Atlanta has been in full Super Bowl mode all week, and not surprisingly, the dozens of events taking place in town in advance of the big game reached a peak on Saturday. Along with concerts by Bruno Mars and Cardi B (more on that in a minute), there was the Maxim party with Future, Diplo and Jamie Foxx; the Foo Fighters DirecTV concert; the Sports Illustrated party with Lil Wayne; and the Rolling Stone fete with Young Thug and Ludacris.
The day started off with the Fanatics party held at the College Hall of Fame and hosted by Philadelphia 76ers co-owner and Fanatics executive chairman Michael Rubin. Celebrities including Kevin Hart, Yo Gotti, Emily Ratajkowski, Gary Vaynerchuk, and Dr. Oz were treated to a feast of fresh served sushi and sashimi, shrimp and grits and mac and cheese while mingling with past and present athletic greats like Julius Erving, Dez Bryant,...

Cardi B is back with a new music video from her debut album, Invasion of Privacy, and it's an entirely different vibe than we're used to seeing from the rapper. On Monday, Cardi released the visuals for the song "Ring," featuring Kehlani, where the two float on clouds and sing about insecurities in relationships. Not only is it a much slower song compared with the other hits from her album, but the video proves to be quite different from the colorful "Be Careful" video and the upbeat "I Like It" video, featuring Bad Bunny and J Balvin, both released earlier this Summer. Watch the "Ring" video above and see how Cardi is doing things differently in her first video release since giving birth to baby Kulture in July.

There she is! Cardi B looked all kinds of gorgeous when she stepped out at the MTV VMAs in NYC on Monday night. The 25-year-old rapper debuted a shorter hairstyle and was positively glowing in a series of sexy outfits. The new mom seemed to have the best time as she mingled with several stars including Jennifer Lopez, DJ Khaled, Millie Bobby Brown, and Maluma.
Cardi had quite the big night; not only was it the rapper's first public appearance since giving birth to daughter Kulture with husband Offset, but she took home two awards (best new artist and best collaboration for "Dinero" with Jennifer and Khaled) - eeeeooowww!

For a song that starts off painfully real – “Should I call first? I can’t decide/ I want to, but a bitch got pride” – the video for “Ring” is delightfully surreal. Cardi B raps about the emotional heft of having no missed calls from the inside of a floating telephone booth over a peaceful ocean.

Many people know James Murray as “Murr” from Impractical Jokers, but he’s tackling serious horror / sci-fi in his upcoming book, Awakened, due out on June 26th. Ahead of the book's release, I caught up with James to talk about his favorite movies, starting Awakened 14 years ago, teaming up with Darren Wearmouth, and the Awakened Experience taking place in New York City:
You’re obviously well-known for your comedy work, but it sounds like you’ve always had a love of horror and sci-fi. What are some of your favorites and what did you watch growing up?
James Murray: I was obsessed with Alien and Aliens, of course, and The Terminator and Terminator 2—that’s one of the only movies that are better than the original. I would argue that Superman 2 is better than Superman as well, but hey. Event Horizon is one of my favorite movies.
It’s so under-appreciated.

Rapper Cardi B broke through in 2017 with her single “Bodak Yellow,” which topped the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart and earned her Grammy nominations for Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song. She has also had three other top-10 singles: “MotorSport” with Migos and Nicki Minaj, “Finesse” with Bruno Mars, and “No Limit” with G-Eazy and A$AP Rocky. But it’s only just now that she has released her debut studio album, “Invasion of Privacy,” which dropped on April 6. Will she score more Grammy nominations in 2019? She could make history as the first solo woman ever to win Best Rap Album.
To date the only female artist who has won Best Rap Album was Lauryn Hill as a member of the hip-hop trio The Fugees. They won in 1997 for “The Score.” No woman has won since, not even Missy Elliott, who became the first and only female rap artist nominated...

It’s hard to think of an artist who’s risen as far as fast as Cardi B: She’s become one of music’s biggest stars in just the 10 months since “Bodak Yellow” dropped (and she was already famous thanks to her run on VH1’s “Love & Hip-Hop: New York”). To do that requires not only hot songs but a hurricane-force personality, and Cardi turns hers up every time a camera pointed in her direction: She’s brash, brazen, ambitious and X-rated, and delivers it all with a proud, Rosie Perez-level New York accent.
None of which would matter if she didn’t have the talent to back it up: She’s a powerful rapper with a forceful and distinctive flow and clever, piercingly funny lyrics (one of the many zingers here comes on the album’s first track, “Get Up 10”: “Went from making tuna sandwiches...

Pretty much every summer sees a clutch of horror films hitting Korean cinemas, and 2012 was no exception, one of which was “Two Moons” (a.k.a. “The Sleepless”), a chiller revolving around a group of strangers waking up in a strange, possibly haunted house in the woods. The film has a decent genre pedigree, having been directed by Kim Dong Bin, previously responsible for the fun “Red Eye” in 2005 and Korean “Ringu” retread “The Ring Virus” in 1999, with a script by Lee Jong Ho, writer of Ah Byeong Ki’s popular 2005 hit “Bunshinsaba: Ouija Board”. The film kicks off in sinister fashion, with a group of 3 strangers waking up in the basement of a remote house in the middle of a forest, with no memory of how they got there. Unemployed graduate Seok Ho (Kim Ji Seok, “Take Off”), horror and mystery writer So Hee (Park Han Byul, “Yoga”) and...
