Gamers are no strangers to popular gaming franchises getting TV or film adaptations that ultimately fail to live up to the game it's based on. In recent years, some gaming franchises have found success in TV adaptations. Prime Video's Fallout and Netflix's Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft have also enjoyed incredible success. Unfortunately, these series are video game adaptations outliers, not the standard. The sci-fi thriller The Butterfly Effect follows Evan’s (Ashton Kutcher) travels through time and space in an effort to change his and his crush Kayleigh’s (Amy Smart) lives, and as such, it was given four different endings. Written and directed by Eric Bress and J. Mackye Gruber, The Butterfly Effect is the story of Evan, a college student with a turbulent past who experiences blackouts and memory loss since childhood. In his 20s, Evan discovers he can travel back in time to specific moments with his adult mind inhabiting his younger body.
Evan begins to use this power to change his and his friends' lives, especially that of Kayleigh, who went through a lot of childhood trauma. However, changing the past also changes the future/present, and in the third act of The Butterfly Effect, Evan ends up in a mental hospital. Evan now has irreversible brain damage...

For fans of Ashton Kutcher, who got to know the wholesome heartthrob through lighthearted fare like That '70s Show and Dude, Where's My Car?, his 2004 thriller The Butterfly Effect came as a shock. In this gruesome horror film, Kutcher has the ability to change his past — but every choice he makes begets an even worse outcome. However dark and disturbing the film is, though, the director's cut was too extreme even for the horror-friendly distributor New Line Cinema.
The version preferred by co-writers and directors Eric Bress and J. Mackye Gruber runs only around seven minutes longer than the theatrical cut, and most of that time is devoted to the radically different ending. Though the alternate conclusion was judged to be in poor taste — and understandably so — it does make a bit more sense out of the complicated and occasionally confusing Butterfly Effect.

Since Netflix's Time Cut seems to borrow many sci-fi and horror tropes and themes from other renowned films, viewers who enjoyed watching it should have many other movies on their watch lists. Unfolding through several different timelines, Time Cut is among the many flicks that use time travel as a narrative device to walk viewers through the complexities of fate, grief, and the consequences of changing the past. However, despite being driven by a complex sci-fi concept, Time Cut does not take itself too seriously and focuses less on getting time travel "right."
Apart from featuring characters who travel through time, Netflix's Time Cut also presents a slasher element, allowing it to blend its sci-fi with horror. Although Time Cut is not as violent as one would expect a slasher horror flick to be, it features a fair share of brutal killing scenes that add some intense thrills to its otherwise familiar narrative.

A wise prophet once said that “you gotta have faith, faith, faith.” Still, what is a spiritual belief system if it isn’t occasionally tested (see: Job) — and that’s where Hugh Grant comes in. The 64-year-old movie star/stammering British icon has spent the last decade or so of his career trying to erase memories of the first few decades of his career, purposefully leaning into what he calls his “freak-show era.” He’s embraced his inner rat bastard and rewarded us with a handful of performances ranging for insufferably narcissistic to downright despicable.

Kevin Costner has had a number of critical flops to go alongside his more iconic successes, but the movie regarded by many as his worst ever, 2002's Dragonfly, was born directly out of M. Night Shyamalan's classic thriller The Sixth Sense. The supernatural thriller from director Tom Shadyac stars Costner as a doctor who is grieving the loss of his wife, who was seven months pregnant when she died in a landslide. His wife reaches him from beyond the grave through his patients that have near-death experiences, which ultimately leads to a brief supernatural reunion.
Dragonfly fits in with the thriller style of the times, alongside movies like Memento and The Butterfly Effect. Unfortunately, the movie was so widely panned that it made very little impact on pop culture, so much so that it is all but forgotten now. While some of the story elements overlap, it was the...

Time travel movies can be extremely difficult to get right, not just because of the complicated science thats involved, but because of the endless possibilities for plot holes and paradoxes. However, Project Almanac is one of the few time travel movies that manages to get everything right with the logistics of the story. Like all the best time travel films, It avoids all the potential pitfalls that come with the genre, providing us with a gripping, down-to-earth story that holds itself together and keeps us on the edge of our seats.
The story of Project Almanac follows protagonist David Raskin and his friends, as they discover his late fathers time travel blueprints. When they get to work building the device, the friends quickly realize that theyre out of their depth as they uncover the dangers of bending the laws of time. Alexandre Aja is one of those filmmakers whose work I’ll always sit up and pay attention to. It’s because the man has consistently created horror movies that have scared, fascinated, and downright pissed me off as a human being. He’s provocative, in all the right ways.
So, with Alexandre Aja’s latest horror movie Never Let Go releasing in theaters this week, we thought we would take a look back at his five most haunting horror movie moments.
Double Entendre – High Tension (2003)
Mere minutes into Aja’s second feature film, we’re smacked in the head with a horrid act that will set the tone for things to come. With almost nothing about the plot being divulged yet, the camera pans over and into a field where a vehicle reminiscent of the creepy truck from Jeepers Creepers sits on a dirt road. We see the truck moving...

*Spoiler Warning: This piece contains spoilers for House Of The Dragon Season 2*
With another critically acclaimed season of Game Of Thrones prequel House Of The Dragon having been and gone and production already well underway on new Westeros spin-off series A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms, Thrones author George R. R. Martin must be feeling pretty chuffed with himself right about now. Or at least, that's what you would've thought. But having ominously warned that he needed to discuss "everything that has gone wrong with House Of The Dragon" in a blog post titled "Burn him! Burn him!" last week, Martin took to his website once more in a mysteriously now-deleted follow-up to vent his frustrations with how Season 2 of the show seemingly meddled with his source material.

The sprawling story of My Hero Academia juggles a rich variety of character arcs, starting with Izuku Midoriya's classic underdog story and the tale of Katsuki Bakugo, his shonen-style rival. Unsurprisingly, the best growth arcs involve the anime's teenage heroes while the pro heroes are more stable in their careers and personal lives. However, there is a major exception: Endeavor. Over time, Endeavor became far more than All Might's bitter rival or the source of Shoto's father issues. Endeavor had his own redemption arc, and it was fascinating to watch.
Redemption arcs are compelling in fiction because, by necessity, they call for serious change and growth in the character. Someone like Endeavor, the pro hero, must strive to become someone greater while doing some introspection and convince everyone that they mean to change their ways, and by the end of the My Hero Academia manga, Endeavor succeeded. He transformed himself as a pro hero,...

The following contains spoilers for My Hero Academia Season 7, Episode 15, "Butterfly Effect," now streaming on Crunchyroll.
My Hero Academia's newest episode picks up right where Episode 14 left off, with the Stain-loving villan Spinner leading a massive mob of disgruntled heteromorphs to take back the streets and free the captive Kurogiri, with only a few pro heroes and police officers to stand in their way. Meanwhile, Himiko Toga prepares her ultimate move when Kurogiri's Warp Gate Quirk becomes available again, and Dabi gets ready to face his father one more time. All of this makes for an emotionally charged sequence of events.
More than ever, My Hero Academia's anime is reminding fans of why the villains fight, beyond obvious reasons such as being the enemies of pro heroes or wanting to steal or destroy things. The anime has been humanizing antagonists like Dabi, Himiko, Spinner, and even the mighty Tomura Shigaraki for a while,...

Before rewatching Mirrors (get it Here), I was a little confused as to why it’s either forgotten or, honestly, kind of hated on. It was one of those movies that I saw in theaters when it came out and then have clear memories of when it came to my Blockbuster for rent. It’s got a fun cast of reliables and was directed by one of the early 2000s freshest and goriest directors. The director has gone on to have a steady and varied career and his new movie starring Halle Berry called Never Let Go sounds as intriguing as ever. After watching Mirrors again, I still really enjoyed it, but I now understand why it has the reputation it has and why it’s perfect for a black sheep. Let’s take a look but maybe be wary of any mirrors that don’t look exactly right.

That ’70s Show and The Butterfly Effect star Ashton Kutcher is making waves online after commenting on the advances of AI and using the tools to create entire feature films with generative assets. Speaking with Google CEO Eric Schmidt at L.A.’s Berggruen Salon, Kutcher went to bat for Sora, OpenAi’s generative video tool. Kutcher is a significant fan of the program and thinks the possibilities it presents are limitless. He details the cost-cutting aspects of using AI, saying shots that would typically cost someone thousands could cost significantly less with the use of AI. He’s not wrong, but what is the cost to creators and crew members?
“You can create good 10, 15-second videos that look very real,” Kutcher said. “It still makes mistakes. It still doesn’t quite understand physics. … But if you look at the generation of this that existed one year ago as compared to Sora,...

Time travel content often relies on established tropes and rules to drive the plot and avoid paradoxes. The use of time travel tropes signals to the audience what to expect next in the story. Characters traveling in time often face consequences like unintended changes to the future or dangerous paradoxes.
Time travel in film and television falls under the sci-fi genre, and many tropes and story elements can be found in every movie and TV show about time travel. Part of this stems from the fact that for time travel to work effectively within a story, there must be rules and restrictions for how the ability can be used, or too many paradoxes will arise. Sometimes, these paradoxes continuously appear across content that centers on time travel. Early examples of the genre have done much to influence what remains in films and TV series that deal with multiple timelines.

The flow of time is perceived as being progressive and linear in nature, which contributes to our understanding of concepts such as ‘Butterfly Effect,’ ‘Grandfather Paradox,’ ‘Bootstrap Paradox,’ etc., where temporal changes are theorized to have a significant impact. But what if time, as we know it, doesn’t remain bound by the constraints of a fixed direction and rather starts acting as a catalyst, connecting various points across the past, present, and future in a way that ensures the inevitability of the continuation of time? As the second season of Amazon Studios’ sci-fi western thriller Outer Range reveals itself with all its eccentric zaniness and complexities, this particular version of time gains narrative focus, often acting like a distinctive character in its own right.
If the first season of the series seemed confusing and bonkers to the viewers, the second season of Outer Range is definitely going to knock them senseless,...

Stamina’s gone
My spirit is weak
Because every time I start to move on

-“Now or Never Now” by Metric
Although not selected for the phenomenal soundtrack for Ned Benson’s follow-up to his similarly themed The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby, Metric’s “Now or Never Now” nearly sums up the plot of his oft-sublime The Greatest Hits. Harriet (Lucy Boynton), a librarian mourning the loss of her boyfriend Max (David Corenswet), is triggered by songs that marked their relationship. An obsessive cataloger (a great quality for a librarian), she has mapped-out the trajectory of their relationships in songs and memorabilia that she accesses in a controlled environment. For the rest of her life there are noise-canceling headphones that she uses to block out songs that send her back into the past.

From the infamous grandfather paradox to accidentally creating a timeline where Ned Flanders rules the world, there’s an element of existential horror to every single time travel story. However, it seems that most filmmakers prefer to focus on the exciting adventure aspects of these mind-bending yarns, as very few films choose to explore the terrifying personal ramifications of going back in time to mess with events in your own life.
Obviously, there are several exceptions to this “rule,” and one of the most entertaining just happens to be Eric Bress and J. Mackye Gruber’s sci-fi thriller The Butterfly Effect, an under-appreciated relic of the 2000s that I think has aged into a much better movie than most folks give it credit for. And now that we have two decades of hindsight regarding time travel cinema, I’d like to take a look back on this weird little flick...

Time travel is by no means an easy topic to explore on screen, as viewers are keen to point out any inherently illogical plot points that make the entire narrative improbable. What If...? Season 2 explores the Multiverse and the Butterfly Effect, showcasing how minor decisions can change fate. The Space Stone's power in What If...? is slightly different from its display in the MCU, imbuing people with identical superpowers. The introduction of the Mohawk characters in What If...? represents a significant milestone, as they are the first original characters in the MCU without comic book origins.

Season 2 has explored the Multiverse and the timelines in which both major and minor decisions have changed the course of fate in mind-bending depictions of the Butterfly Effect in the MCU.
