I genuinely love movies about elite soldiers facing off against horrors beyond human comprehension. The sight of watching a warrior’s arrogance and bravery, which comes from their ability to wield the latest cutting-edge weapon, evaporates as they come to the realization that their primitive ways of warfare are of no use is oddly satisfying. I suppose Aliens is responsible for this obsession, immediately followed by the evergreen classic that is Predator. Dog Soldiers is really underrated and should get a lot more mainstream attention. I didn’t initially like Annihilation, but upon a rewatch, I admired what it was going for. I fell in love with Overlord almost instantly. I’m not sure if it counts, but I’ll give a shoutout to Underwater. Also, Love, Death & Robots’ shorts set in this subgenre, The Secret War, Sucker of Souls, Kill Team Kill, and In Vaulted Halls Entombed, are incredibly rewatchable.

For over a century of cinema, monsters like werewolves and vampires have given audiences a non-stop slew of classic films, from Dracula and The Lost Boys to recent hits like Nosferatu. With Blumhouse producing their own take on The Wolf Man, audiences have been given a unique adaptation of a beloved monster. However, it's far from the only werewolf movie out there, with audiences being spoiled for choice when it comes to the iconic legend.
Werewolves have been at the forefront of horror and dark fantasy alike since the 1980s but can be difficult to pull off on the big screen -- especially in live-action. When the monster is done well, it can be the most terrifying thing on screen, and some movies have captured the sheer horror of its transformation and violent nature. After experiencing 2025's Wolf Man, audiences should look to these classics for a good follow-up.

Editor’s note: this list was originally published in September 2023. It has since been updated to coincide with the release of “Wolf Man.”
Of all the classic horror movie monsters, werewolves, quite frankly, get the short end of the stick. Vampires and zombies have dozens of iconic films to claim as their own, while ghosts and witches pop up in movies all the time. But werewolves? Their great films are fewer and further between.
One of the oldest and most widespread creatures of folklore, the modern idea of werewolves originated from ancient Greek literature before growing into a common figure in European oral traditions. But onscreen, werewolves are less omnipresent — and typically less successful — than those starring significantly younger creatures of the night like vampires. Universal Pictures’ first attempt to bring werewolves to screen, 1935’s “Werewolf of London,” flopped and paled in comparison to masterpieces like “Dracula” and “Frankenstein.” The...

The allure of the werewolf has persisted for centuries, rooted in mythology that speaks to our darkest fears and primal instincts. Representing a loss of control and a descent into savagery, werewolves embody the tension between humanity and beast. In cinema, these themes have been explored in a variety of ways, from tragic tales to gory thrill rides.

It has been nearly 17 years since Oscar winner Heath Ledger’s death, and now his one-time co-star, Julia Stiles, is remembering the actor. Stiles starred with Ledger in 1999’s classic teen romantic comedy 10 Things I Hate About You. Only this time, we’re venturing beyond many of the essentials like An American Werewolf in London (Pluto TV), The Howling (VOD), Dog Soldiers, or Ginger Snaps to spotlight lesser celebrated lyncanthropes.
The five werewolf movies offer everything from foundational classics to gonzo ’70s action and everything in between. Here’s where you can stream them this week.

A new clip has been released from the upcoming horror movie Wolf Man. The video reveals the best look yet at the reimagining of the iconic Universal Monster.
Directed by Leigh Whannell (The Invisible Man), Wolf Man is hitting theaters on Jan. 17, 2025. Up to this point, filmgoers have not yet gotten a very clear look at the titular monster in the film, but a new preview that was just released changes that. The clip picks up in mid-transformation with Christopher Abbott transforming into a werewolf. It's not a super-brief clip, spanning over a minute long, and it showcases the completion of the transformation. The video can be watched below.

Halloween Horror Nights did no favors to Leigh Whannell’s upcoming Wolf Man this past Halloween season, with a costumed actor inside the park giving us a lackluster first tease of the werewolf design featured in the movie. It’s never a good idea for a movie’s character design to be revealed by a Halloween costume, and unsurprisingly, it didn’t go over well with fans.
That’s probably why Universal has made the decision, one week before the release of Wolf Man, to show off the whole damn werewolf with a clip from the movie that seemingly reveals all. The clip showcases the body horror transformation star Christopher Abbott undergoes after being bitten, while also giving us a good look at his fully transformed werewolf look.

Dog Soldiers is living proof that sometimes, even the most intelligent and well-crafted movies can slip under the public’s radar. The film has tons of exciting ideas and fascinating themes, but somehow it remains underappreciated. The story centers around a small squad of British soldiers who find themselves in dangerous enemy territory — but things turn even more sinister when their enemies are identified as supernatural werewolves. Although Dog Soldiers 2 never got made, the original was a hugely creative horror that deserves more attention.
Dog Soldiers features talented actors such as Emma Cleasby, Sean Pertwee, and Darren Morfitt in the lead roles, all of whom bring their characters to life in unpredictable and unforgettable ways. It's a horror movie that respects the audience and doesn't win them over with cheap thrills or easy jumpscares, but rather creates an eerie atmosphere and uses that to elevate the entire story. Steven C. Miller has directed a movie with a concept that is, simply put, fuckin’ cool.
“Werewolves,” written by Matthew Kennedy and now in theaters via Briarcliff Entertainment, is about a world where the annual supermoon turns everyone outside into huge, hungry werewolves that rip apart anyone in their path. Luckily, Frank Grillo plays a ripped scientist who is close to a cure, but also has to worry about keeping his family safe during yet another supermoon. There’s tons of in-your-face werewolf action, big guns and lots of blood and guts in this throwback flick that would feel right at home in a drive-in double feature.
Miller has plenty of experience with both action and horror films, directing movies like “Mauraders,” “First Kill” and “Silent Night” and working with big names like Sylvester Stallone and Nicolas Cage. He spoke with Variety about the joy of practical effects, how microbudget...

Steven C. Miller’s lycan action-thriller Werewolves is a little bit Dog Soldiers, a dash of The Purge, and a decent amount of howl-and-gun excitement. It’s high on indie spirits but not clear of shortcomings. Miller’s further return to the horror genre after 2022’s smarthouse slasher Margaux feels tethered to his prior run of shoot-em-up Bruce Willis collaborations and too serious for its good. Legendary SFX artist Alec Gillis designs all the film’s snarling monsters, a highlight of Werewolves, but something else is missing from the experience that prevents this scrappy creature feature from breaking into the furry subgenre’s upper echelon.

Presented by Steven C. Miller’s Werewolves, Bloody Disgusting is looking to the stars and howling at the moon with Werewolves Week. Today, Luiz H.C. grabs a handful of silver bullets as he revisits six iconic werewolf deaths in horror history.
Personally, I’ve always found monster movies to be more thrilling when they give the protagonists a fighting chance. This tiny sliver of narrative hope usually comes in the form of a specific weakness that can be exploited in order to defeat whatever creature happens to be attacking, with one of the most famous examples being werewolves’ “allergic reaction” towards silver – with even young children being aware of this fatal weakness.
However, there’s more than one way to skin a cat (or a lycanthrope), and in honor of Steven C. Miller’s upcoming Werewolves, which depicts a world where a Supermoon event has turned millions of people into monsters,...

Looking back on the late 90s and early 2000s, it wasn’t exactly the best time for the horror genre, and you’d be hard pressed to argue that anything released at the time was a classic. Because they weren’t. That’s not to say that we didn’t get any ‘cult’ classic titles that have stood the test of time because of elements other than the quality of the movie. 1999s The Blair Witch Project had a genius marketing campaign that sold the movie as a scary, true life tale, while the press made out that it was so terrifying, people were being sick in cinemas. The truth is, it’s an average horror movie and it was the shaky camerawork that more than likely made people nauseous. It’s still regarded as a cult classic, however, but what about the rest of the content from the time?...

There’s a moment in John Milius’ Conan the Barbarian that always gets to me. It’s that scene right before the final battle when Conan prays to his Cimmerian god and states that no one will remember who he and his companion were – the only thing that matters is that, in that moment, two stood against many. From the battle of Thermopylae to Black Hawk Down, the idea of a small group standing their ground against an overwhelming force is one of the most compelling setups in all of fiction, and this also applies to the horror genre.

While werewolf movies were all the rage in the 1980s thanks to hits like An American Werewolf in London, The Howling, and yes, even Teen Wolf, by the 2000s they had lost a lot of their bite until director Neil Marshall came along with his first feature film, Dog Soldiers. Set in the Scottish Highlands, the film traces a group of soldiers trying to survive against a vicious pack of werewolves, and presents audiences with an ultraviolet movie that utilizes practical effects to deliver one of the most unique takes on the mythical beast ever seen. Its a cult favorite today, and though a sequel has long been in the works, Marshall took to social media yesterday to share some heartbreaking news about its development.

If you're a fan of the cult-classic werewolf horror movie Dog Soldiers, Neil Marshall has some bad news for you. While a sequel to the 2002 film had been in the works, it appears that it is now dead. Marshall broke the news on Instagram - but gave fans some hope, as he also revealed that he's working on a new werewolf film instead.

Director Neil Marshall made one of the all-time coolest werewolf movies with his 2002 film Dog Soldiers (watch it Here), so it’s shocking that we’ve never gotten a sequel, especially considering we’re living in a world where An American Werewolf in Paris exists, and there have been eight Howling movies. A few years ago, Marshall said there was “more of a chance” of the sequel happening than ever before… but in a recent interview, he said he feared that Dog Soldiers 2 is dead in the water. Now, he has taken to social media to confirm that there’s little to no hope of Dog Soldiers 2 ever happening – so he’s going to make a different werewolf movie, The Werewolves of London, instead.

Director Neil Marshall has announced that we’ll probably never see a sequel to his werewolf horror, Dog Soldiers.
Neil Marshall’s Dog Soldiers is one of the defining werewolf movies of its time. The 2002 horror launched Marshall’s career and has become somewhat of a cult classic, receiving a shiny new 4K release in 2020.
A Dog Soldiers sequel has been in the works more or less since the release of the first film. It’s proven to be a bit of a struggle, however, and when Inverse asked Marshall where we are with the sequel in June 2024, Marshall didn’t seem too hopeful.
“I’ve a feeling it’s probably dead in the water because things have gone very quiet from the other side,” the director said, adding: “I’m not giving up, though; there’s still a possibility.”

We recently celebrated the 22-year anniversary of Neil Marshall’s Dog Soldiers here on Bloody Disgusting, a fan-favorite werewolf movie that’s still without a sequel. While a promising update on the anticipated sequel would soon follow, the filmmaker took to Instagram this afternoon with disappointing news.
Dog Soldiers pit soldiers up against werewolves in the Scotland wilderness, and a trilogy of films was the original plan. In fact, it had been announced back in 2004 that Dog Soldiers: Fresh Meat was in the works. Of course, that never ended up coming to fruition.
While Marshall was hard at work trying to get the sequel greenlit, it seems as though all plans have fallen through. The director shared a fan-made poster for the sequel on social media and detailed that, despite valiant efforts, Dog Soldiers 2 is no longer in the works.

Operation Blood Hunt is the film we wanted after Dog Soldiers showed us all that werewolves and soldiers could be a great combination. Unfortunately, there wasn’t much in the way of followup at the time, the promised sequel never happened and anyone who saw Werewolves of the Third Reich would probably rather forget it. So we’ve had to wait until now for Brandon Slagle to take the standard war movie plot of an odd assortment of fighters sent on a mission behind enemy lines and some werewolves to serve as the villains. And when it works, Operation Blood Hunt is a lot of fun, unfortunately, it doesn’t always work.

Freevee is becoming the home of many lost, forgotten or just bad action movies, and Duchess is another violent critical disaster that is being discovered thanks to its inclusion on Amazons Freevee offshoot. The film that was described by some critics as a "fourth-rate rip-off" of Jason Statham and Guy Ritchies greatest hits, as well as Quentin Tarantinos Kill Bill, scored a dismal 14% Tomatometer score on its release in August, but its current availability on free streaming has seen it jump into the Freevee global Top 10.
Duchess is the story of Scarlett Monaghan, a woman who turns from small-time crook into a brutal vengeance-seeking anti-heroine. After involving herself in a diamond deal that goes wrong, Scarlett finds herself left for dead, but as is the way in these movies, it doesnt take long for her to regain her strength and set out on a one-woman mission to extract her own...

Dog Soldiers and The Descent director Neil Marshall has worked with actress/co-writer Charlotte Kirk on his three most recent films, The Reckoning, The Lair, and Duchess, and they’re continuing their collaboration on the upcoming psychological thriller Compulsion. Deadline reports that Saban Films has secured the domestic distribution rights to the film – and while a release date has not yet been announced, a first look image has been unveiled. You can check that out at the bottom of this article.
With a script written by Marshall, Compulsion is said to be inspired by the old school erotic thrillers of the ’80s and ’90s, like Fatal Attraction, Basic Instinct, and Single White Female. This one centers on the dynamically twisted relationship between two women, as both become embroiled in a series of horrific murders on the island of Malta. Kirk stars in the film alongside Anna-Maria Sieklucka, who starred in...

Neil Marshall has turned out some great horror films in his career. The Descent will forever scare you away from exploring caves, and keep you up with the disturbing imagery laced throughout its runtime. Tales of Halloween features a delightfully twisted short from Marshall that involves pumpkins coming to life and slaughtering everything in their path. He's even recently returned to the realm of horror with The Reckoning and The Lair, which is more than welcome after the dismal reception to his Hellboy reboot. But Marshall's directorial debut, Dog Soldiers, deserves a second look - especially with how it upends what viewers come to expect from a werewolf movie.

After tackling The Invisible Man, writer/director Leigh Whannell set his sights on updating another iconic Universal Horror Monster: The Wolf Man. There have been many different incarnations of the Wolf Man character, but Whannell told ScreenRant that his version is unlike any that have come before it, adding that he even took inspiration from Heath Ledger’s Joker.
“I lined up all the different versions, I had a Pdf of everyone from Lon Chaney to David Norton in American Werewolf, The Howling, Dog Soldiers. I had every look in front of me, and I’m kind of staring at it, and I’m like, ‘All right, so where do I fit in?’” Whannell explained. “You know what a big inspiration to me was, was Heath Ledger’s version of the Joker. Not so much in terms of look, but I had a photo of him on my desk as...

The upcoming Wolf Man reboot is going to introduce a unique depiction of the titular creature unlike anything seen in prior films made about the Universal Monster. Going with an untraditional design for the film was influenced by Heath Ledger's Joker.
Wolf Man director Leigh Whannell, who also directed the hit Invisible Man reboot released in 2020, addressed the new film in an interview with Screen Rant at New York Comic Con. Whannell commented on the creature's design, sharing the story behind how he settled upon how the movie's werewolf will appear. It began with simultaneously looking at images of previous depictions of werewolves in film and deciding that his movie's version needed to be unique. The director also shared how Heath Ledger's bold new approach to the Joker in The Dark Knight was highly influential in choosing to go with a design that was far unlike the other depictions.

Frank Grillo is back in the horror genre with a twist on a classic monster in Werewolves. First having gotten in the works under the title Year 2, the movie is set in a world in which, a year prior, a supermoon turned millions into the titular creatures, with the impending return of the lunar event seeing society attempting to prepare for the potential of another major outbreak. Alongside Grillo, the ensemble Werewolves cast includes NCIS' Katrina Law, Godfather of Harlem's Ilfenesh Hadera, James Michael Cummings and Golden Globe nominee Lou Diamond Phillips.
A little over two years after filming first began on the film, Briarcliff Entertainment has released the first Werewolves trailer. The video opens up by setting up the movie's world of supermoon-turned-humans, with a woman finding her home has been broken into by the titular creatures. It then cuts to introducing Grillo's Wesley Marshall, who is shown preparing...

The Wolf Man director is ready to explain how he developed a new version of the iconic monster's design. As a modern Wolf Man reboot, it hopes to reimagine the classic Universal 1941 monster movie. The trailer was recently released at New York Comic Con and revealed a family struggling under the pressure of an unknown enemy. The original movie certainly showcased horror, but The Invisible Man director Leigh Whannell intends to infuse an eerie sense of mystery into the franchise.
In an exclusive interview with Screen Rant, Whannell opened up about his designs for the character. After compiling a book containing all the different werewolf designs, he settled on a single one. Surprisingly, he also cited Heath Ledger's Joker as a major inspiration for Wolf Man. While Whannell did not view it as a visual concept for the character, Joker did play into the creature's nature. In 1996, Wes Craven destroyed and remade all presumptions about the horror genre with the release of Scream, the iconic slasher that made waves in the industry and evolved into a major franchise. With six movies to date and Scream 7 on the horizon, Scream is one of the longest-running horror movie series ever. However, the effects of Scream were seen in horror movies after only one installment, demonstrating the brilliance of the effective standalone.
Scream famously took on many established horror tropes at a time when the genre was struggling after the best horror movies of the 1980s. Craven created a new, razor-sharp slasher story that was as funny as it was disturbing, revitalizing the genre and making the best horror movies of the 21st century possible. Many modern horror movies and tropes only exist because of Scream, but few live up to this Halloween-primed classic (which ironically came out...

Here in the US, James Watkins’ directorial debut Eden Lake went straight to DVD and was distributed by Dimension Films. Of all the titles to fly under the Dimension Extreme banner though, this one was the most deserving. The movie turned out to be more of an endurance test than I could have ever anticipated. Eden Lake also manages to be both acclaimed and despised. Anyone who knows what became of Michael Fassbender and Kelly Reilly’s characters very well understands the mixed sentiments surrounding this movie.

Golden Globe nominee Christopher Abbott stars as Blake, a San Francisco husband and father, who inherits his remote childhood home in rural Oregon after his own father vanishes and is presumed dead. With his marriage to his high-powered wife, Charlotte, fraying, Blake persuades Charlotte to take a break from the city and visit the property with their young daughter, Ginger.
But as the family approaches the farmhouse in the dead of night, they’re attacked by an unseen animal and, in a desperate escape, barricade themselves inside the home as the creature prowls the perimeter. The Descent director Neil Marshall returns with action thriller Duchess, starring Charlotte Kirk. Here’s the first trailer for the movie.
Neil Marshall made his name with a string of successful horror films like Dog Soldiers and The Descent. The latter is often considered one of the best, most terrifying horror films of the 2000s. Marshall was only involved with the sequel as an executive producer, though.
He then ventured into science fiction with 2008’s Doomsday followed by historical adventure Centurion. While he found little success with the 2019 reboot of Hellboy, he returned to his roots for the last couple of films, including 2020’s The Reckoning and 2022’s The Lair. He has also pivoted to the small screen in recent years, directing episodes of Hannibal, Westworld, Timeless and Lost In Space.
Now, he turns his hand to action with Duchess. The synopsis reads as follows:

If there’s one thing horror fans and filmmakers love to do, it’s compare notes on their favourite facets of the genre. About movies, about influences, about giant creepy-crawlies. And most of all, about the different driving trends of the many eras; what we were scared of, and how that bled so openly into the defining genre cinema of the time. From the atomic fallout of the 1950s and the creature features that followed, to the rise of exploitation, and the real-world killers behind the eventual slasher boom of the ’80s, it’s the subtext that an entire community is built on.
So there’s something particularly warm and comforting about Sarah Appleton and Phillip Escott’s similarly-tinged doc Generation Terror, which seeks to unravel the real-world fears behind the particularly grisly output of the 2000s. An era often characterised by iffy remakes and gnarly extremity which made for...

Neil Marshall's new film Duchess is a thrilling revenge story set in the world of diamond smuggling, starring his life partner Charlotte Kirk. Marshall drew inspiration from classic crime movies of the '60s and '70s to create a fresh style for the movie, which includes intense action sequences and a dark sense of humor. Marshall also reflects on the 2019 Hellboy reboot's failure, still lamenting the production, but expressing gratitude at the cult following it has since amassed.
Neil Marshall is back in the action genre with the revenge thriller Duchess. Marshall is best known for his work in the horror genre, though always bringing an action-oriented twinge to his movies, having first broken out with the 2002 werewolf thriller Dog Soldiers and the spelunking classic The Descent. Neil Marshall seems to want what Guy Ritchie and Quentin Tarantino had in the early aughts. For his latest outing, the once-promising English filmmaker behind horror films like “Dog Soldiers” and “The Descent” scales back his interest in frights for a more straightforward tale of fights, but fails to land nearly every punch he throws. Rather than build on the template his aforementioned peers built on themselves, Marshall does nothing for the ensemble crime thriller genre other than play the hits, which would’ve been bearable had he actually done so on key and with some care or nuance.

Oh, how the mighty have fallen. Only with Neil Marshall’s filmography, especially the uninspired actioner Duchess, the fall has been so drastic that one has to wonder whether he was that mighty to begin with. After a one-two punch of early aughts cult favorites in Dog Soldiers and The Descent, Marshall’s career has been on a serious downward spiral, and his latest effort — if you can even call it that, as that implies effort was put in by anyone involved — is a new low.

Opening in UK cinemas this weekend, Duchess is Neil Marshall’s latest collaboration with Charlotte Kirk, a revenge thriller in which she plays Scarlett, a pickpocket turned gangster’s moll who is out to avenge her man, discovering a violent streak of her own in the process. it’s a typically entertaining actioner from the Dog Soldiers director, and when we met for a chat about it recently, I told him that it felt to me like a classic East End legend.
“I suppose that was kind of the intention, to create something like that,” he says. “The germ of the idea came about over sushi in 2018. I remember that one. I was having sushi with Charlotte, and we thought about what if we could make a female Scarface? Both being big fans of that film. And then it grew from there into this character of Scarlett and her.
