In this special feature, Subhash K Jha remembers the exceptional actress Sridevi.
Seven years have passed since Sridevi’s left us suddenly. Not a day passes when we are not reminded of her ubiquitousness…That snatch of a song from Sadma, the cute quirky clipping from Judaai, that melodramatic confrontation scene with the late Smita Patil(they must be exchanging notes in heaven) in the long-forgotten Nazrana which Raveena’s dad Ravi Tandon directed….I know of no other actor in the world who could rise so much above the script. So high she touched the sky, and we gazed from down below, always awestruck by her arresting artistry.
How did she do it? The great Kamal Haasan once told me it was the art of mimicry. “She’s a fantastic observer. Whenever she is working with me, she keeps observing and absorbing, and then she uses the quirks and...

1. Junaid Khan:
Loveyappa didn’t set the box office on fire. But Junaid Khan’s performance as a Loverboy addicted to the dark secrets on his phone was suitably hyper. The chemistry between Sridevi’s daughter Khushi and Aamir Khan’s son Junaid in this cute-as-a-button love story, was the highlight among many highlights of the Madhu Mantena production. Loveyapa is the Bobby of our times. And that’s saying a lot.
2. Zahan Kapoor:
A star kid with a breathtaking pedigree. So okay, he made a nondescript debut in Hansal Mehta’s Faraaz, like his grandfather Shashi Kapoor, who went unnoticed in Dharamputra, and what about the biggest superstar of Hindi cinema,...

Raaz is pretty much an original spook story, told with terrific elan and a high-velocity suspense that tears across the screen with a bloodcurdling scream. Vikram Bhatt is no stranger to thrillers. His very first film, Fareb, was a thriller of shocks.
Bhatt’s previous film (inspired by What Lies Beneath) was a far less in-your-face suspense thriller than Raaz. Everything this time around is more sensuous, tactile, thrilling, throbbing with terror and anxiety. Bhatt builds a field of foreboding through age-old gimmicks associated with the horror genre. Doors creak and open ominously, screams rent the air with piercing suddenness, and a fog envelopes the studiously silent landscape in Ooty to convey the terror within.
Cinematographer Pravin (the director’s father) captures the inner and outer landscape in shades of ebony evil. As is the tradition in horror-suspense films, most of Raaz is shot in the dark. Pravin Bhatt makes...

Mumbai, March 24 (Ians) Veteran actor and politician Raj Babbar recalled working in the multi-starrer film ‘Hum Paanch’ in 1980 with director Bapu and producer Boney Kapoor. He shared a fun memory related to a dance sequence in the film and joked about himself and his co-actors Nasiruddin Shah, Gulshan Grover, and Uday Chandra by calling everyone a “good dancer” except Mithun Chakraborty.
Though in reality it was just the opposite. He said: “Back then, during the ‘Hum Paanch’ shoot, there were about 1,000-1,500 dancers, and it was Boney Kapoor’s first film. Nasiruddin Shah, Me, Gulshan Grover, and Uday Chandra were very good dancers who struggled with every move, while Mithun Chakraborty, who was a very bad dancer, nailed every step perfectly in just one shot. Despite overwhelming negativity from large swathes of the player base, Wizards of the Coast has soldiered on with its pre-release hype campaign for Magic: The Gathering‘s latest crossover product. Announced last week, Secret Lair X The Walking Dead immortalizes several characters from AMC’s hit series as playable cards in the Ccg, an important distinction to make and the primary reason why folks have taken umbrage with their creation.
As a limited product (Secret Lair drops are only available to pre-order for roughly one week before they’re gone forever), many are concerned that each card’s short availability period and unique abilities set a dangerous precedent for future offerings, potentially alienating those who perhaps don’t have the means to secure their copies before the window closes for good. In the early days of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Samuel L. Jackson was the first major star to sign a lengthy contract with the studio, and many in the industry were shocked when it was announced that the actor had agreed to appear in nine movies as Nick Fury. The prolific star has now shown up in ten installments of the McU if you include uncredited cameos, and he’s set to stick around for a whole lot longer.
The news broke today that Jackson is returning to headline a Disney Plus series with Nick Fury in the lead, making it the ninth show set in the McU currently on the schedule. No further details are available just yet, but the smart money is that the small screen spinoff will pick up from where we last saw the cycloptic head of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Imagine an episode of a crime drama without suspenseful music right before the villain goes in for the kill. Or a romantic comedy without the crescendo of the orchestra right before a kiss. Whether we realize it or not, music plays its own vital role on television, and so do the songwriters behind it. Madison Reyes and Charlie Gillespie, stars of Netflix’s “Julie and the Phantoms,” are some of the youngest in the game. At ages 16 and 22, the pair wrote their first-ever song for television last fall while on the set of the fantasy musical-comedy series, which premiered Thursday. It all started when they were working on a dance number for a song that had yet to be written. The two decided to sneak off and write it themselves — and what came out was a love letter to one of director Kenny Ortega‘s greatest hits. “Both of us...

Bipasha Basu Makes A Comeback After 5 Years. She tells Subhash K Jha why she was tempted back to work by Vikram Bhatt.
You have been missing from the screen for a while. Is it because you had more interesting things to do?
Yes, I’ve been missing from screen. Post my marriage I wanted to take some time off. But I wasn’t quantifying my time. So I had no idea how much time I was taking off. I was happy building my relationship with my partner (Karan Singh Grover). I spent a lot of time with him and my parents and sisters. That’s something I hadn’t done for a long time.
You started your career early?

Will the movies ever let religion back into the mainstream? It doesn’t seem likely, given the secular bent of most critics, festivals, and film awards. But the question could certainly occur to any thoughtful viewer of Marco Pontecorvo’s Fátima, which is set for release by Picturehouse in theaters and via PVOD on Aug. 28.
The film, which has been shown in pop-up previews for the last few weeks, is about the heavenly visions of three young children, who in 1917 said they encountered the Blessed Virgin Mary in a field near Fátima, Portugal. Believers flocked to the site. There may have been miracles. And Mary, said the children, confided three “secrets,” which became the core of an enduring Catholic cult that eventually found of the two young people, Francisco and Jacinta Marto, canonized as saints following their deaths in the 1918 flu pandemic, and made the third, Lùcia dos Santos, a...

Wizards of the Coast (WotC), the publisher of Magic: The Gathering, has announced that they’ve pushed the release date of the Secret Lair: Ultimate Edition drop back to June 12th. They cited a “delay in manufacturing due to Covid-19” as the reason for this unfortunate development. WotC originally scheduled the Secret Lair drop, containing alternate art enemy color fetchlands, for May 29th.
This collector’s item is even more special than previous limited edition drops, as the Ultimate Edition will sell in local game stores. This is unlike previous Magic: The Gathering Secret Lairs, which went up for sale on Wizards’ online storefront. Additionally, fetchlands such as Verdant Catacombs, originally printed in Zendikar, are widely played in Eternal formats Modern, Legacy and Vintage. The set of five alternate-art fetchlands will go for over $300, depending on the game store.

Avengers: Endgame may have drawn the Infinity Saga to a definitive close and reshaped the future of the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe by retiring several long-serving superheroes, but we all knew that this wasn’t going to be the franchise’s last massive crossover event. Kevin Feige has been open in admitting that Earth’s Mightiest Heroes will assemble once again at some point down the road, while the seeds for the Young Avengers will be planted in the not-too-distant future.
With more characters than ever set to join the McU thanks to both brand new big screen properties and the ever-expanding slate of Disney Plus shows, the crossover potential in the long-running comic book series is set to be bigger and more exciting than ever before. And now we’ve heard that Marvel are reportedly developing a project that nobody is expecting.

Lionsgate has hired “American Hustle” scribe Eric Warren Singer to write “Now You See Me 3,” the latest installment in the franchise based on a fresh take by Singer.
The first two movies in the “Now You See Me” series have taken in $687 million worldwide cumulatively. The previous films starred Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Isla Fisher, Dave Franco and Morgan Freeman, among others. No casting has been set yet for the third installment.
Singer’s take will introduce new characters into the world while also creating opportunities for the original cast to reprise their roles.
Jonathan Bayme and his company Theory 11 will serve as a magic consultant to the filmmakers.

21 Savage loves a good slow jam. Among the Atlanta rapper’s many quirks is his propensity to hop on Instagram Live and sing R&b classics, like Aaliyah’s cover of the Isley Brothers’ “At Your Best (Let Me Know)” to Diddy, Usher, and Loon’s 2002 hit, “I Need A Girl (Part 1)” in an off-key, yet entertaining, falsetto squeal. What makes the ritual more endearing is that it doesn’t seem at all performative: For all of 21 Savage’s deadpanned lyrics about intense violence, he seems to adore the emotional complexity of R&b.

Raaz Reboot
Starring Emraan Hashmi, Gaurav Arora, Kriti Kharbanda
Directed by Vikram Bhatt
When in Romania, do as the Romanians do?? Well, sort of. The latest instalment of the Raaz franchise, and by far the most gripping—if you like that sort of a thing—since the first Raaz film in 2002, is shot with subdued splendor by Manoj Soni, in the snowswept landscape of Romania. This novel location lends a beguiling bleakness to what could easily have been yet another bland spook-fest from the horror-house of the Bhatts.
But Raaz Reboot(Re-Bhoot?) is more gripping than the two earlier instalments of the Raaz franchise which suffered for the want of a tight plotting. Raaz Reboot is also a direct descendent of the original Raaz film which, to nudge moviegoers’ memories, scored big in the year of Sanjay Bhansali’s Devdas.
