The challenge of setting your movie inside a vehicle is inherently … nifty? Attention-grabby? Crazy enough to work? Bruce Goodison's Black Cab takes a swing at horror storytelling from a cabbie's backseat, with Cornetto trilogy favorite and accomplished actor Nick Frost at the wheel. Imagine this year's yellow cab confessional Daddio pit against supernatural snippets that recall 2003's Dead End, but it's a bumpy ride. Virginia Gilbert's story strives for the best of true crime thriller and haunted legend worlds, only to fumble both as scenes bounce off one another like bumper cars.
Frost's chatty driver (Ian) is one point in a triangle of lead performances. Synnove Karlsen stars as Anne and Luke Norris as her douchey boyfriend-slash-hopeful-fiancé, Patrick. After a public dinner with friends, where Patrick announces their (surprise) engagement, Anne visibly retreats before calling a cab. During the 1940s, the film noir genre was at its peak in American cinema, popularized by classic films such as The Maltese Falcon, Gilda, and Double Indemnity. While the 1940s is considered to be the pinnacle decade of some of the best classic noir films, there is a selection of films, including Fritz Lang's M, Dead End, and The Petrified Forest, that feature elements of film noir, but were released prior to the classic era of the film genre.

The 1930s are undoubtedly the most influential decade in the gangster genre's history. While the silent era produced many proto-type gangster movies, the genre officially did not begin to take form until the early 1930s. Film scholars and historians consider Josef von Sternberg's 1927 movie Underworld the heir-apparent to the Pre-code gangster films that would flood cinemas between 1930 and 1934.
The rise of the gangster genre came to fruition in part because, between the emergence of sound film in 1927 and the implementation of the Hays Code in 1934, Hollywood operated in what is now known as the Pre-code era. This period saw an unprecedented escalation of violence, sexuality, and drug use in Hollywood cinema. Some of the most notorious films of this era were the gangster movies Little Caesar, The Public Enemy, and Scarface. Even after the Hays Code went into place, Hollywood continued making acclaimed gangster movies such as Dead End,...

Sidney Lumet once wrote: “While the goal of all movies is to entertain, the kind of film in which I believe goes one step further. It compels the spectator to examine one facet or another of his own conscience. It stimulates thought and set the mental juices flowing. In a film career spanning 50 years, Lumet explored conscience in such classics 1957’s “12 Angry Men,” 1973’s “Serpico,” 1976’s “Network” and 1982’ s “The Verdict.”
Lumet’s New York Times 2011 obit stated: “Social issues set his mental juices flowing and his best films not only probed the consequences of prejudice, corruption and betrayal, but also celebrated individual acts of courage.” And one should also add redemption to that list. He was always in a New York state of mind. Of the 38 films he made, 29 were shot in New York. Lumet earned four Oscar nominations for best director- “12 Angry Men,” which marked his feature debut,...

"Criminal Minds: Evolution" honors producer Harry Bring with a dedication card at the end of a season finale. Harry Bring produced 186 episodes of "Criminal Minds" and left a lasting impact on the series and the TV industry. His family's heartfelt remarks spoke to Bring's dedication to his film and TV work.
Harry Bring was honored at the end of a Criminal Minds: Evolution episode with a dedication card, and for good reason. After 15 seasons of Criminal Minds, the show ended in February 2020. Then in November 2022, Paramount+ renewed the series for a 16th season, referring to it as Criminal Minds: Evolution. Many of the classic Bau characters from the series returned, now charged with uncovering a sinister network of serial killers who have begun working together after the Covid-19 pandemic.
Season 16 was popular enough to warrant Criminal Minds: Evolution season 2 from Paramount+, which is in production, set to premiere at an unknown date.

Mushoku Tensei quickly went from being relatively unheard of to one of the most popular isekai franchises. Studio Bind has beautifully elevated the source material to create a modern fantasy classic, focusing on the series' complex worldbuilding and narrative.

From adventurer parties to magic students to royalty, Mushoku Tensei has so many characters it's easy for people to lose track. Unicron needs a new lieutenant after Scourge's demise; options include Soundwave, Overbite, and Grand Scourge for Transformers 8 villain. Potential minions of Unicron in Transformers 8 could be Oil Slick, Sunstorm, and Cyclonus, adding new dynamics to the villainous lineup. Introducing Blackarachnia as a cunning villain and resurrecting Grand Scourge for a more menacing threat in Transformers 8.
It seems that Transformers 8 will continue the saga of Unicron's threat in the Transformers timeline, suggesting a new second-in-command Decepticon will take Scourge's place. By the end of Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, the world-devouring planet-sized Transformer Unicron had yet to be definitively dealt with; his arrival on Earth only delayed rather than foiled altogether. To pave the way for his terrible presence, the apocalyptic robot has historically employed various minions. Technically, being a Decepticon isn't necessarily the same as working for Unicron, but the Transformers under the Decepticon umbrella are far more likely to do so.

Although he has personally competed for the Best Picture Oscar as a qualifying producer of just four films, Martin Scorsese is responsible for directing 10 of the top Academy Award category’s nominees, including 2024 contender “Killers of the Flower Moon.” This recent improvement upon his total makes him only the third filmmaker in Oscars history to helm a double-digit amount of Best Picture nominees. Including him, six people who were already credited with directing at least one nominee rose higher in the ranks this year.
The previous Scorsese films that vied for Best Picture are 2007 winner “The Departed” (for which he earned his sole directing trophy) and nominees “Taxi Driver” (1977), “Raging Bull” (1981), “Goodfellas” (1991), “Gangs of New York” (2003), “The Aviator” (2005), “Hugo” (2012), “The Wolf of Wall Street” (2014), and “The Irishman” (2020). Of the 10, he received producing notices for the most recent four and directing bids for all but “Taxi Driver.” The only ones who...

Dead End is the embodiment of the old saying “road to nowhere.” In this 2003 horror movie, one unlucky family’s annual trip to grandma’s house doesn’t go according to plan. What awaits these unsuspecting characters is a series of events that will steer them straight into the unknown. It’s one hell of a Christmas in this macabre holiday tale, which stirs up uncertainty and unrest as the pavement stretches on forever.
Dead End first showed up on video-store shelves around 2004 after enjoying great success at multiple film festivals. Made on a low budget of less than a million dollars and with a small cast of actors, this California-shot yet French-financed horror-comedy has, strangely enough, yet to be reissued on a physical media format higher than DVD. Nevertheless, it remains a cult favorite all these years later. The colorful dialogue, the progressively unnerving atmosphere, and the ensemble of...

The episode of Revisited covering Wrong Turn 2: Dead End was Written by Emilie Black, Edited by Juan Jimenez, Narrated by Niki Minter, Produced by Tyler Nichols and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
A long, long time ago, in a state deep in the woods, a bunch of people were eaten by cannibal hillbillies in a film called Wrong Turn. Soon, the locals to where the film was taking place got very angry about the depiction of their fellow mountain and wood residents, which they thought gave them a bad name. Horror fans responded by seeing the film anyways, making it a minor hit. The first film had a budget of $12.6 million and made $28.7 million at the box office. While this may lead to a sequel at times, it was not a given. Fast forward to 4 years later and we are gifted with the first of a long series of sequels.

(Welcome to Did They Get It Right?, a series where we look at Oscars categories from yesteryear and examine whether the Academy's winners stand the test of time.)
If you were to guess who the most nominated director was in the history of the Academy Awards, who would you guess? Maybe you'd say Steven Spielberg, who has made films for a half-century that have been beloved by millions. Or maybe you're inclination was to guess Martin Scorsese, given his level of simultaneous mainstream acclaim and critical adoration. Or maybe you'd go back to the golden age of Hollywood and guess someone like Frank Capra or John Ford, filmmakers fundamental to establishing what popular American cinema was and directed many films still revered today. In reality, it's not any of these people.
It may come as a surprise to learn that the most nominated director of all time is William Wyler.

Horror fans have been disappointed more times than not over recent years, having to go through countless subpar films before finding one that is truly entertaining, scary and fresh. While there are still many classic horror movies to offer fans ample fright, there are also some interesting watches that are great despite defying horror standards.
Instead of taking horror movies too seriously, viewers can embrace some of the best campy horror movies. The 2000s had some exceptional campy horror, from quirky ghost stories like Thirteen Ghosts and Dead End to cheesy creature features like Cursed and Dracula 2000. Most of these campy movies aren't iconic for being terrifying but rather for being outrageously weird and laugh-provoking.

"Jacob's Ladder" reveals that the terrifying visions of a Vietnam veteran are actually attempts to save his life on the battlefield. In "Dead End," a family lost on their way to a party actually died in a car crash and are unaware of their own deaths. "Reeker" surprises viewers by revealing that the college students being killed off were already dead from a car crash at the start of the film.
While it is usually a cop-out for a movie to reveal that the hero was dead all along, sometimes, this classic twist can be shockingly effective. The revelation that a story’s hero has secretly been dead for the entire plot, unbeknownst to themselves, is one of the oldest tricks in the book. The premise dates back as far as author Ambrose Bierce’s endlessly influential 1890 short story “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge.”

Humphrey Bogart's early career was filled with forgettable movies and villainous roles before he broke into the A-list and landed leading roles. Bogart's performances in "The Maltese Falcon" and "The Big Sleep" established him as the template for hard-boiled detectives in film noir. It was Bogart's role in "Casablanca" that cemented his legacy as one of Hollywood's finest actors and showcased a more sensitive side to his acting abilities.
Humphrey Bogart is now remembered as one of the most iconic stars in movie history – and rightly so – but it took the actor a long time to escape B-movie villain roles. The American Film Institute has named Bogart as the greatest male movie star of all time. The prickliest challenge for indie time-loop thrillers like Dane Elcar’s Brightwood to overcome is simple: can you entertain an audience with minimalist repetition? Elcar utilizes nothing more than a suburban pondside trail, two actors, and the temporal puzzlement of purgatorial duplication. Your mileage will vary with an almost 90-minute mindbender that’s as barebones as a Bear Grylls camping trip due to the stripped-down nature of a movie running in circles by design. Everything rides on character dissections as reality fractures like a damaged record skipping the same few beats over and over, which may or may not be enough to pull viewers through Elcar’s conversationally dependent, light-and-breezy nightmare.

Editor’s note: Jesse Andrews is author of the novel Me and Earl and the Dying Girl, which is one of five books pulled from the library shelves of high schools within the purview of Tallahassee, Florida-based Leon County Schools superintendent Rock Hanna, after the Leon County chapter of the conservative group Moms for Liberty petitioned the schools to remove the book because of the frank depiction of sex and gender identity issues. The others include Push, the Sapphire-penned book that inspired the film Precious; Doomed by Fight Club author Chuck Palahniuk; Lucky by Alice Sebold; and Dead End by Jason Meyer. Still being scrutinized is an autobiography of tennis great Billie Jean King, because it discusses her sexuality. This has been an ongoing theme precipitated by policies passed by Gov. For many queer youth, coming to terms with their sexuality can be a difficult, horrifying experience. For Russian kids – where the state has outlawed any promotion of LGBT themes towards children – it can be even more complicated and traumatic. Russian filmmaker Dima Barch taps into this nightmarish feeling with provocative horror short Dead End, which expertly uses the genre to explore the deleterious, shape-shifting effects of toxic masculinity and how it can turn a young man inside out. Hopping between different eras in the man’s life, following the protagonist escaping from an abusive ex, as well as cleverly utilising its locations to heighten the drama, Dead End questions if you can ever move on from a difficult past and into a new future. We had the chance to talk to Barch, who has left Russia, ahead of Dead End’s premiere on Dn today about turning personal trauma into art,...

I’ve loved gangster movies since I was four years old and saw Humphrey Bogart and Sylvia Sidney in Dead End (1937) on TV, and Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway in Bonnie and Clyde (1967) at the movies (My dad pinched a lobby card for me). Every Friday night, a local NYC station ran old crime flicks on a slot called “Tough Guys.” Bogart, James Cagney, Edward G. Robinson, and George Raft were the faces over the title. Today that might be Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, Wesley Snipes, and James Gandolfini.
The gangster and crime genre produced some of the most influential films in cinema history. Mervyn LeRoy’s Little Caesar (1931), William A. Wellman’s The Public Enemy (1931), and Howard Hawks’ Scarface (1932), get a lot of credit for breaking ground in topics beyond criminality, shattering sexual taboos as well as the boundaries of acceptable visual violence. Salem, Massachusetts brews up more Halloween activities than you can shake a broom at each October, so it was logical for Salem Horror Fest to take place during the spookiest month of the year. For its sixth installment, however, the festivities have moved to the spring, making it much easier to attend without throngs of tourists.
If last night’s opening night ceremony — headlined by a screening of Candyman with Tony Todd in attendance — is any indication, horror lovers will show up any time of the year. Held at the Peabody Essex Museum, the event kicked off with poignagnt opening remarks by festival director Kay Lynch. She briefly outlined the evolution of Salem Horror, which was born out of her desire for catharsis after the 2016 election.

David Chiang was a child actor before he joined the Shaw Brothers Studio as a stuntman and fight instructor; after seeing potential in him, director Chang Chen started to groom him. After the sudden departure of their biggest star, Jimmy Wang Yu, Shaw was looking for a replacement which led to the pairing of Chiang and Ti Lung in films like “Dead End” and “Have Sword, Will Travel” in 1969. However, with “The Wandering Swordsman” Chiang had a chance to shine as a solo leading star without Ti Lung hanging around him.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for the Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 16 finale, “Dead End.”] Criminal Minds: Evolution might have ended its 16th season with the FBI suffering a loss — Deputy Director Bailey (Nicholas D’Agosto), we were just starting to like you! — but every member of the Behavioral Analysis Unit (Bau) — David Rossi (Joe Mantegna), Emily Prentiss (Paget Brewster), Jennifer “J.J.” Jareau (A.J. Cook), Penelope Garcia (Kirsten Vangsness), Dr. Tara Lewis (Aisha Tyler), and Luke Alvez (Adam Rodriguez) — survived. And the good news is they’ll all be back for Season 17 (picked up in January). “The main cast members are all coming back,” showrunner Erica Messer confirms to TV Insider. “And then deals are still being made for some of the other faces you saw this year.” But what about the two profilers with the Bau at the end of the original run (2005-2020 on CBS) we didn’t see but only heard tidbits about in Season...

Well, thank goodness the show has been renewed because Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 1 Episode 10 opened more questions than it answered.
The most shocking thing about that is how little there was to go on once the elephant in the room surfaced.
Gold Star has been Elias Voit's, well, Lee Duval's, big secret, and it led to one death and a whole lot of extra security when the case was said and done.
Coming into Criminal Minds: Evolution, I imagined that each season would feature an unsub.
Now it looks like Zach Gilford will be around for a while.
If you read much from me, you know how difficult I find naming conventions. If I get hung up on whether to use first or last names, you can imagine that deciding what to call Sicarius/Elias Voit/Lee Duval now that his real name has been unearthed is quite the conundrum.
