One of my answers should have been beauty. I am not a beauty fascist in real life but I suppose I am at the movie theaters. Hollywood's great actresses should be immortalized with key lights, flawless makeup and evening gowns. Movie stars are supposed to be fantasies... our idealized selves. That's why Old Hollywood still has so much appeal. The studio system understood this. I like beauty on my silver screens so I really don't want to see Emma Thompson -- who can be just ravishing (see Much Ado About Nothing.

MADRID -- Actor Antonio Banderas has won the Gold Medal 2004 awarded annually by the Spanish Film Academy, the academy announced Friday. Banderas, who began his film career with director Pedro Almodovar in the 1982 Labyrinth of Passions, will receive the award at a ceremony in Madrid in July. The academy said it had chosen homegrown hero Banderas "to recognize the actor's work in spreading Spanish culture throughout his prolific international career." Banderas is currently appearing in Imagining Argentina and provides the voice for Puss-in-Boots in Shrek 2. The sequel to Mask of Zorro is due in 2005. Others to have won the award since its establishment in 1986 include Elias Querejeta, Carlos Saura and Fernando Fernan Gomez.

Oscar-winning actress Emma Thompson has stepped up to defend her latest film - after critics booed and walked out of its screening at the Venice Film Festival. Emma stars alongside hunky Antonio Banderas in Imagining Argentina, which combines supernatural elements while set during the country's brutal military dictatorship. The 44-year-old says, "I think there was always going to be a great deal of different kinds of responses. "When you're dealing with a subject that is so tricky, such as state-sponsored torture, and mixing it with magical realism, you're stepping a fine line." Director Christopher Hampton says, "Whatever people think about the film, people need to talk about this issue. "This is a wound, and if you deal with an open wound, people are going to react in a very tender fashion, so it's not surprising."...

But this year's competition roll call for the grande dame of international festivals is light on American titles, with only two of the 20 entries coming from the United States. "Unfortunately, American films are mostly showing out of competition," said de Hadeln, who is in his second year of directing the festival. "Often, they don't want to risk it because they fear they might not win first place." One U.S. title battling it out for the festival's Golden Lion prize is Mexican director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's 21 Grams, starring Sean Penn, Benicio Del Toro and Naomi Watts. The Focus Features film details the story of a critically ill mathematician, a grieving mother and a born-again ex-con. Los Angeles- and London-based Myriad Pictures' Imagining Argentina, directed by Christopher Hampton and starring Antonio Banderas and Emma Thompson, will also brave the competition.
