The 82-year-old stage and screen icon, who died in September last year after a battle with pneumonia, left no inheritance to his long-term girlfriend, Philipa Hart.
Hart, a set designer, first crossed paths with Gambon when he filmed Longitude in 2000. The couple shares two teenage children, Tom, 17, and William, 15. For two decades, Gambon divided his time between his wife and Hart, but his will makes no provision for her.
The three-page document, drafted in 2016, named Gambon’s wife and their 60-year-old son, Fergus, as executors. In the event of his wife’s passing before him, the entirety of his £1,465,882 ($1.7 million) fortune was designated to be inherited by Fergus.
The will stipulated that his children with Hart would each receive £10,000 and a trophy.

For his on-screen work, he'd won two Screen Actors Guild Awards and four BAFTA Awards. He was nominated for a Tony for Best Actor in a Play with his role in his Broadway debut Skylight in 1997, and earned two Emmy nominations for Path to War and Emma.

Michael Gambon, a protégé of Laurence Olivier and giant of the British stage who portrayed Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore, apparently with little effort, in the final six Harry Potter movies, has died. He was 82.
“The Great Gambon,” as Ralph Richardson once called him, died “peacefully in hospital with his wife Anne and son Fergus at his bedside, following a bout of pneumonia,” according to a family statement provided Thursday by a publicist.
Among the first group of actors recruited by Olivier for the National Theatre Company in the early 1960s, Gambon, a Dublin native, was nominated 13 times for an Olivier Award, winning in 1986 and ’90 for Alan Ayckbourn’s A Chorus of Disapproval and Man of the Moment, respectively, and in 1988 for Arthur Miller’s A View From the Bridge.

Michael Gambon, the Irish-English actor best known for his role as Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore in six of the “Harry Potter” movies, has died, Variety has confirmed. He was 82.
“We are devastated to announce the loss of Sir Michael Gambon,” his family said in a statement. “Beloved husband and father, Michael died peacefully in hospital with his wife Anne and son Fergus at his bedside, following a bout of pneumonia.”
While it is easier for a character actor, often working in supporting roles, to rack up a large number of credits than it is for lead actors, Gambon was enormously prolific, with over 150 TV or film credits in an era when half that number would be impressive and unusual — and this for a man whose body of stage work was also prodigious.

“Essential Truths of the Lake” is the last thing most people would expect from Lav Diaz: a direct follow-up to his previous film, “When the Waves Are Gone.” It’s not a sequel, per se (this one actually comes earlier), but they are connected, with a third movie featuring the same disillusioned police detective in the works.
The Filipino filmmaker, whose pokey social critiques run anywhere from three to 11 hours, established the character of Lt. Hermes Papauran (John Lloyd Cruz) in “Waves.” Described there as “arguably the greatest Filipino investigator ever,” he’s Diaz’s version of “The Singing Detective”: a tortured enforcer afflicted with a skin condition that reflects on the surface the conflict and cynicism roiling within him. He’s a good cop in a corrupt country, furious with how Rodrigo Duterte mishandled the war on drugs.

This year’s Cannes Film Festival could be a defining moment for Johnny Depp’s acting career comeback. Jeanne du Barry will open this year’s festival on the evening of May 16 in a coup for Depp and widely known French multihyphenate Maïwenn. The period royal drama stars Depp as King Louis Xv, while Maïwenn plays the titular character in addition to directing.
The following day, Depp will participate in the festival’s official press conference for Jeanne du Barry, according to sources familiar with his schedule.
The various events — as well as the movie itself — will provide a chance for Hollywood to assess Depp’s current composure. “I haven’t seen the movie, but it feels like was a good way for him [Depp] to get into back into everything,” says a veteran specialty distributor.

Alison Steadman has reflected on filming the first lesbian kiss on British television in the 1974 BBC drama, Girl.
The scene saw Steadman and Myra Frances’s military officers share an intimate moment in the then-controversial drama about gay women in the army.
Speaking in a new reader interview in The Guardian, Steadman, 76, said: “I remember being very nervous about the whole thing. Then I got over it. Then I was worried about how my parents, who lived in a quiet suburban area of Liverpool, would cope.
“I thought, ‘My poor mum! The neighbours will be whispering, “Did you see your daughter on television?”’ By the time we came to record, this great director [Peter Gill] didn’t make a fuss and said, ‘So this is the bit where they kiss … All right, quick kiss, let’s carry on.’

As he stars alongside Olivia Colman in a drama about the Mansfield Murders, the actor talks about his discomfort with Naked, doing night shoots with Julie Walters – and growing old grotesquely
David Thewlis, speaking by Zoom from his home in the Berkshire village of Sunningdale, has set his screen at a jaunty angle. His manner is equable, nerdy, eager to please. Nothing like what you’d expect, in other words – unless you had watched Landscapers, a new four-part TV drama in which Thewlis stars opposite Olivia Colman. Perhaps he’s one of those actors who doesn’t de-role until he’s on to the next character.
Landscapers is true crime, in so far as the protagonists are Susan and Christopher Edwards, the so-called Mansfield Murderers convicted in 2014 of killing Susan’s parents and burying them in the garden 15 years before. The partnership between Robert Downey Jr. and Marvel Studios turned out to be more beneficial to both parties than either could have possibly imagined, especially when it all started with a huge level of risk and a giant leap of faith.
Just four years before he was cast as Tony Stark, Downey Jr. couldn’t even mount a comeback because nobody would insure him, with close friend Mel Gibson putting his hand in his own pocket so the troubled talent could take the lead role in The Singing Detective, while 40% of his salary for Gothika was withheld until shooting had finished just in case he went off the rails again.

Scottish director Bill Forsyth has a strange way, one for which audiences should be eternally grateful, of delivering a symphony of melancholy notes which register in his movies with a sort of blithe exhilaration instead of the customary patina of hopelessness they perhaps might otherwise be subject to in the hands of another filmmaker. One senses the discomfort, the confusion, the weariness some of Forsyth’s characters experience without feeling overwhelmed by them, and he infuses his best films with such lyrical, unexpected, transformative beauty that it’d be almost impossible to leave them with anything other than an entirely bearable lightness of being; suffocating ennui is not on this filmmaker’s palette.
Pauline Kael said of Forsyth’s much-beloved Local Hero (1983) that the picture was “like one of those lovely Elizabethan songs that are full of tra-la-la-la-la-las,” a quality that most appreciate about the film but that some use...

Just before the credits roll on Edward Norton’s “Motherless Brooklyn,” a dame looks up to her unlikely protector and sighs, “It’s funny how things turn out.” She’s referring to the mystery that has preoccupied us for the previous two hours and change — a sprawling, ambitious tale of murder, blackmail and corruption in mid-century New York to rival “Chinatown” in its complexity, if not necessarily that brain-bender’s elegance or appeal — but she could just as easily be speaking of the journey Jonathan Lethem’s novel took en route to the screen.
“Brooklyn,” in this case, is the nickname for Lionel Essrog, aka “Freakshow,” a man with Tourette syndrome whose spontaneous tics and off-color verbal outbursts can prove embarrassing in public, but serve him well in the employ of a professional snoop named Frank Minna (Bruce Willis). For an actor like Norton, who’s made a career of...

[Editor’s note: The following contains mild spoilers for “Russian Doll” Season 1.]
It takes eight episodes of repeatedly dying for Nadia (Natasha Lyonne) to learn how to live. That’s the basic premise of “Russian Doll,” the new existential Netflix dramedy created by Lyonne, Amy Poehler, and Leslye Headland.
Directed by Lyonne, Headland, and “But I’m A Cheerleader” helmer Jamie Babbit, the show boasts a compelling supporting cast, including Chloe Sevigny, Elizabeth Ashley, Rebecca Henderson, and Charlie Barnett as Alan, another person who shares Nadia’s complicated relationship with life and death. But more importantly, it’s filled with huge ideas came from years of big sky conversations between friends.
For Lyonne, “Russian Doll” is a deeply personal story that reflects her complicated relationship with living in this world. As she told IndieWire, “Big and small, we’re constantly struggling with that dynamic of ‘How do I go on participating in life?’ It’s kind of a moment-to-moment choice to not...

Ben Affleck’s future playing Batman on the big screen may be over — in part because the cost of insuring him may have gotten too steep, multiple industry insiders told TheWrap.
The actor, a recovering alcoholic who checked himself into rehab last week for the third time in the last two decades and the second time in just over a year, may have priced himself out of a pricey tentpole studio movie like Warner Bros.’ upcoming “The Batman.”
“More than likely the studio will replace him because the insurance costs are going to go through the roof,” a representative for a completion bond company told TheWrap.
