Art Evans, the actor who appeared in Die Hard 2, A Soldier’s Story and so many more movies and TV shows beginning in the 1970s, has passed away at the age of 82. The cause of death was diabetes.
Art Evans had well over 100 credits to his name, normally playing smaller roles. One of these key ones was in Die Hard 2, in which he played an air traffic controller who aids in John McClane’s latest fight against terrorists. Another came in 1984 with A Soldier’s Story, co-starring alongside Howard E. Rollins Jr. and Adolph Caesar as an army private. While Caesar would end up receiving the bulk of the attention (receiving Golden Globe and Academy Award nominations), Evans was also making his own mark.
Art Evans got his career started the previous decade — after time studying theater and on the stage — earning his first credit on sitcom Chico and the Man.

Luca Guadagnino and Lionsgate announced that the “Call Me by Your Name” and “Queer” director is in final discussions to film a new version of Bret Eason Ellis’ dark horror novel “American Psycho,” nearly 25 years after the same company released Mary Harron’s satirical adaptation. In a key role that elevated his career, the 2000 film starred Christian Bale as yuppie investment banker-turned-serial killer Patrick Bateman.
It’s the kind of announcement destined to raise eyebrows. Guadagnino is in a career sweet spot after “Challengers” and “Queer” this year (and “After the Hunt” in post); he already has many projects in the works, including “Separate Rooms” with Josh O’Connor and a Thomas Mann adaptation in early development. So why is he choosing a remake — and for a film that doesn’t seem that long ago?
New versions of older films are not unusual. Even the word “remake” is tricky here — does that apply with adaptations?...

Jason Isbell and his band The 400 Unit have a new album on the way. It’s called Weathervanes, and before it’s out June 9th via Southeastern Records/Thirty Tigers, Isbell has today unveiled the lead single “Death Wish” as well as a long run of North American 2023 tour dates.
A press release describes Weathervanes as “a collection of grown-up songs” that span topics like love, change, and nostalgia: “There is something about boundaries on this record,” Isbell explains in a statement. “As you mature, you still attempt to keep the ability to love somebody fully and completely while you’re growing into an adult and learning how to love yourself.” Pre-orders for the record are ongoing.
“Death Wish” is a perfect example of the themes Weathervanes explores, unpacking the complicated conflicts of loving someone struggling to love themselves from the depths of depression: “Did you ever love a woman with a death wish?...

The Paris Theater and the New York Film Critics Circle have unveiled a new bi-monthly screening series to be held at the iconic Paris Theater in Manhattan. Select films will be chosen and presented by NYFCC members, followed by discussions after the screenings. The Paris Theater, one of the oldest arthouse cinemas in the United States, was preserved by Netflix in 2019; the 571-seat theater is the last single-screen theater in New York.
“I’m thrilled about this partnership,” Jordan Hoffman, current chair of the NYFCC, said in an official statement. “Coming to the Paris Theater, the last single-screen cinema in Manhattan, is always a thrill. Its location at the southeast corner of Central Park adjacent to the Plaza Hotel already feels like something out of a movie. Astrid and Lilly faced off against the final monster: The Guardian.
The final battle commenced, but not before an emotional goodbye rocked the girls' grasp on the truth in Astrid & Lilly Save the World Season 1 Episode 10.
Astrid and Lilly got hit with a big slap of betrayal with the Guardian on his way to destroy everything.
In Astrid and Lilly Save the World Season 1 Episode 2, we theorized that Brutus was hiding much of the truth from the girls.
Shortly after that, we dumped that theory because we saw how his relationship evolved with the duo to something akin to family.
Sadly, our original theories were correct: Brutus was hiding something this whole time.
Brutus admitted to stretching the truth with everything while acknowledging that he provided them with the wrong orb.
This betrayal is devasting for the girls and us!

Mostly known by his jobs as editor in films like “Girl’s Revenge”, and the series “Till Death Do Us Part”, Pan Ke-yin is also a filmmaker. “My Sister”, the first production of his own company Ke-Yin Film, obtained Funds for Short Films by the Ministry of Culture, and was selected into the Forward Taiwan Program of the 23rd Taipei Film Festival, before it found its way to Osaka.
My Sister is screening at Osaka Asian Film Festival
The story revolves around Hsiao-chun, a 18-year-old woman, member of a family of four, who is about to start her university days. Hsiao-chun is quite accomplished, despite her age, having really good grades, retaining a job at a call center, and keeping an admirer/boyfriend who seems particularly fond of her. Her only problem is her little brother, Hsia-zai, whom she shares a bedroom with, who never seems to stop enjoying torturing her.

Astrid and Lilly dealt with this week's monster by chopping off their heads.
A doppelganger monster appeared in Astrid & Lilly Save the World Season 1 Episode 9, forcing the girls to cut off their heads (and Val's head).
Obviously, it was not their heads, but it still made for an exciting plot.
Despite being the least-scary monster in terms of looks, the doppelganger monster creeped us out.
Taking on the victim's likeness, the monster aims to replace the person entirely and eat the original.
Lilly ended up becoming the first doppelganger monster, three in total.
Thankfully, the girls made up during this hour instead of the final boss.
Speaking of making up, Candace and Lilly also made some headway in their relationship.
The doppelgangers were very realistic, as neither Brutus nor Astrid noticed that Lilly was not acting like herself.
Only after Lilly revealed herself to Brutus did he realize that...

During their Saturday detention, Astrid and Lilly weren't on the best of terms.
Astrid & Lilly Save the World Season 1 Episode 8 saw the girls fight over a few things.
We also wonder how the show will handle the fast-approaching end of the season.
A monster kept appearing in Lilly's dreams (nightmares), which caused her to get no sleep, and the beast subsequently appeared in the school.
Astrid and Lilly usually performed in sync, but their differences got in the way.
One thing that got revealed: Brutus found out that The Guardian's real and in town.
This freaked him out.
For the first time in the series, Astrid and Lilly found themselves captured by the monster with all of their friends (and pseudo-acquaintances).
Luckily, they again prevented deaths, but their friendship got put to the test (and essentially failed).
They left detention on a sour note, with their friendship essentially in ruins.

Talk about getting a big head!
Astrid & Lilly Save the World Season 1 Episode 6 saw Principal Varshidi possessed by a monster that causes people's egos to grow until their head explodes.
The girls were forced to perform an exorcism to get the monster out of its host body, their principal.
Of course, the exorcism wasn't your typical bible and cross exorcism -- it aptly ended up being monster-themed.
Brutus also went through some interesting developments: he has a major organizational problem.
This posed issues not just for him but for Astrid and Lilly's monster hunting abilities.
Lilly got out of control when it came to slow down her classmates' head exploding process.
"Toenail" brought a lot of interesting topics to the forefront, specifically about bullying.
The only way to slow down the ego-boosting curse was to belittle and bully the person "infected."
This brought up an interesting and conflicting dilemma for...

A terrifying thought is a monster that knows your biggest fear and uses it to kill you.
It's even more terrifying when you're a high-school student.
Astrid & Lilly Save the World Season 1 Episode 3 forced our two heroes to face off against this formidable foe.
From a large snake to giant bees, the fear monster makes its mark on the girls and their school.
Astrid and Lilly's powers also are slowly getting stronger, with Astrid gaining super vision and hearing and Lilly's leg getting stronger.
For once, their powers worked more than just as monster radar.
Astrid was able to figure out what the monster was afraid of (what killed it), and Lilly could fend off the monster's attacks.
Super leg strength came in handy when facing off against her biggest fear: dodgeball.
It sounds ridiculous, but a lot of Lilly's trauma and bullying came from dodgeball, so facing this fear proved to be complicated.

Sanford and Son, the first mainstream, primetime sitcom in television history with an almost-all Black cast, debuted on NBC on Jan. 14, 1972. Created by Norman Lear, and starring legendary “blue” comedian Redd Foxx as an African American bigot, it was seen as a direct answer to CBS’ All in the Family. But the Bunker family series was a social satire which took its laughs seriously. The Sanfords presented pure comedy, any lessons it taught were intentionally coincidental. The most controversial part of the show, when it first aired, was its lead actor.
Foxx was already an underground comedy legend when Cleavon Little, best known for his role as Sheriff Bart in Mel Brooks’ Blazing Saddles, suggested him for the lead in the mid-season replacement. Little wasn’t available, but worked with Foxx on Ossie Davis’s 1970 neo-noir film Cotton Comes to Harlem. Before Foxx played the junk dealer stuck with the bale of genuine Mississippi cotton,...

Una Stubbs, the British actress who died in Edinburgh, Scotland, on Thursday at age 84, may be best known to modern audiences for her role as Sherlock Holmes’ landlady, Mrs. Hudson, on the Benedict Cumberbatch-led series “Sherlock.”
But she had her breakout role in the long-running BBC sitcom “Till Death Do Us Part,” which ran for seven seasons between 1965-75 and inspired Norman Lear’s classic American hit “All in the Family.”
In “Till Death Do Us Part,” Stubbs played the Sally Struthers role — the left-leaning daughter of a reactionary white working-class father (played by Warren Mitchell) who regularly clashes with the Liverpool socialist husband of Stubbs’ character (played by Anthony Booth).
In a 2017 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Lear recalled how his partner, Bud Yorkin, tipped him off about “Till Death Do Us Part” while shooting a film in London in the late 1960s. “’Holy s—, I’ve lived through that,...

Tenacious D have put their own spin on two of the Beatles’ classic Abbey Road tracks, “You Never Give Me Your Money” and “The End,” for a new seven-inch vinyl release for charity.
Rather than perform the entire Side Two medley from the original Beatles album, the tenacious duo bookend their single with semi-faithful renditions of the two songs, and fill in the gaps with some absurd verses and scatting of their own. As with their previous single, “Time Warp,” the limited-edition vinyl release of the medley will benefit a charity,...

Alan Arkin turned 85 earlier this year, yet he has always seemed timeless. With a career spanning more than 60 years, it’s difficult to fathom when there was ever a time when Arkin wasn’t part of the culture. He was an early member of the Second City theater troupe before making his Oscar-nominated film debut in the timely “The Russians Are Coming! The Russians Are Coming!” in 1966. He gave iconic performances in seminal movies; he terrified Audrey Hepburn (and audiences) in “Wait Until Dark”; starred in Mike Nichols’ take on Joseph Heller’s “Catch-22”; starred and produced the comedy classic “The In-Laws”; and lent his voice to the 1982 cult classic “The Last Unicorn.” And that was all before his Oscar-winning turn in “Little Miss Sunshine,” which kicked off a renaissance of sorts for the actor, who earned another nomination for best picture winner “Argo” and now stars on the heralded...

Cleopatra Jones
Blu ray
Warner Archive
1973 / 2:35:1 / 89 Min. / Street Date – March 19, 2019
Starring Tamara Dobson, Bernie Casey
Written by Max Julien, Sheldon Keller
Cinematography by David M. Walsh
Directed by Jack Starrett
A good-natured if rickety assemblage of action movie cliches, Cleopatra Jones is dominated by two bigger than life actresses, Tamara Dobson and Shelley Winters. The movie’s trailer promoted Dobson as the “soul sister’s answer” to James Bond but you can count Bruce Lee, Emma Peel, Shaft and The Girl from U.N.C.L.E. among Cleo’s many relevant role models.
Winters plays “Mommy”, a foulmouthed mob boss who depends on the thriving Poppy fields of Turkey for her cash flow and Dobson is Cleopatra, an Amazonian fashion plate whose special agent skills range from karate to high speed car chases – her plan to wipe out Mommy’s syndicate leads to a high octane race through ‘70’s era L.

In the third episode of Netflix’s charming new silver-haired comedy The Kominsky Method, Michael Douglas pees in the hedges outside the home of the woman he’s dating. This could merely be an easy joke at the expense of a senior citizen with less control over his bodily functions than he once had. And to a degree it is. One of the best moments in “The Spy Who Dumped Me,” an uneven but often funny action-comedy, gets at the essence of its feminist satire: Kate McKinnon is tied up, bloodied, and completely at the mercy of her cold-blooded captor. But instead of crying for help, she retorts, “Please go fuck yourself,” setting all the signifiers of a damsel in distress ablaze. After stealing the show time and again in supporting roles during her off-seasons from “Saturday Night Live,” McKinnon finally scores a lead in “Spy” that foregrounds her brilliant capacity to tear apart familiar faces and tropes with constant glee, and she outpaces this discardable entertainment every step of the way.
McKinnon’s near-subversive feistiness usually outpaces whatever comedic vehicle she lands in — “Ghostbusters” would have been saved if she’d taken center stage — almost to the point where filmmakers seem coy about giving her too much space. In “The Spy Who Dumped Me,...

Ah, Criterion! I love it when the company expands the parameters of what many people consider to be "classic cinema" and anoints the likes of The In-Laws, the 1979 comedy that remains a personal favorite. It may be very broad and very American, but it's also a quite inspired mixture of physical comedy, clever wisecracks, and great performances by Peter Falk and Alan Arkin. It also features a sparkling original screenplay by Andrew Bergman. Criterion's release schedule for July 2016 also includes the 1962 version of Carnival of Souls, two from Alain Resnais (Muriel, or The Time of Return and Night and Fog), King Hu's A Touch of Zen (a wonderfully fluid and dazzling martial arts classic) and Terrence Malick's dreamy The New World. When Ryan Reynolds was young, he wanted to be Don Knotts. Honeymoon in Vegas is the latest movie to take a gamble on Broadway as a re-invented musical, and the man who should be the most excited is the film’s screenwriter, who took the reins on bringing his 1992 comedy to the stage. (The Jason Robert Brown-scored musical opens Jan. 15.) Though it’s Andrew Bergman’s first time writing a musical, the writer-director boasts a film resume that should inspire any movie lover to nod his or her head in reverential pleasure. Bergman’s credits pull from across the board of comedy icons—Mel Brooks in Blazing Saddles, Peter Falk and Alan Arkin in The In-Laws,...

This should be a big week for Ryan Reynolds. He has two potential summer blockbuster movies opening, both of which stand to ingratiate him with different sets of moviegoers. In family cartoon "Turbo," opening July 17, he's the voice of a super-fast snail with dreams of hot rod racing. And in action comedy "R.I.P.D.," based on a comic book, he's a rookie in a department for undead cops who partners with grizzled ghostly lawman Jeff Bridges.
And yet, a quarter-century into the 36-year-old Canadian actor's career, which has included several leading-man roles, we still have to ask: Why isn't Ryan Reynolds a bigger star?
It's not like Reynolds isn't movie-star talented (check out his one-man performance in "Buried"). Or movie-star handsome (he was named People's Sexiest Man Alive a couple years ago). Or movie-star fascinating (his marriages to Scarlett Johansson and Blake Lively have kept him a tabloid fixture). And yet,...

Adam Ferrara with Edie Falco in Nurse Jackie. (Photo: Ken Regan/Showtime)
By Eddy Friedfeld
Actor/comedian Adam Ferrara used to fight fires with Denis Leary on Rescue Me. He now drives way too fast on Top Gear. This season he is trading witty banter and love scenes with Edie Falco. As New York City Police Sergeant Frank Verelli, his scenes with Falco are as funny and even hotter than those with the crew of the fictional “62 Truck.”
Nurse Jackie, the superb Showtime comedy drama about hospitals, addiction, friendship, and family, with the former Carmella Soprano, the brilliant Edie Falco, leading a magnificent cast and guest stars including Merritt Wever, Paul Schulze, Dominic Fumusa, Anna Deavere Smith and Peter Facinelli, Bobby Cannavale, Morris Chestnut, Stephen Wallem, Betty Gilpin, and Ferrara.

So, Michael Douglas. He was kinda funny in “Romancing the Stone,” we guess. And he had to have had a sense of humor to agree to “The In-Laws” and “Me, You & Dupree” (we can’t even remember what he did in that movie, having successfully erased it from our damaged brains). But there’s really not anything in the man’s filmography to suggest that he’s the perfect man to play the most fabulous piano player of all time, Liberace. Close your eyes and picture Gordon Gekko getting out of a mirrored Rolls. If that’s difficult, we can’t even get to the 200-pound “King Neptune” costume and rhinestone-encrusted Baldwin grand (Liberace Museum, R.I.P.).
But maybe this is all proof of the genius of Steven Soderbergh, who has also cast Matt Damon(!) as the showman’s live-in lover for the HBO film, Behind the Candelabra, according to Deadline.

Friends say former World Wrestling Entertainment Films president Joel Simon died in his sleep this morning after a four-year battle with pancreatic cancer. In addition to The Condemned and The Marine, he produced See No Evil as vehicles for WWE superstars. Before starting WWE Films in 2002, Simon served as president of Quincy Jones Media Group and Quincy Jones/David Salzman Productions, overseeing all feature and television productions from the late 1990s through 2001. Prior to that, he was partnered for nearly a decade with producer Bill Todman Jr in Todman/Simon Productions, which had a first-look deal with Lorimar and Warner Bros Pictures, and whose feature releases included Married to the Mob and Hard to Kill. Simon's additional production credits included Vacuums, X-Men and X2, Wild Wild West, Steel, The In-Laws, and Say It Loud: A Celebration of Black Music in America, a five-hour Vh-1 original documentary mini-series. He went into...
