A good portion of Paul W.S. Anderson’s filmmaking career has consisted of video game adaptations, with his writing and/or directing credits including Mortal Kombat (1995), Monster Hunter, and six Resident Evil movies. Next up for him is a film version of the Sega game The House of the Dead. Originally released in 1997, The House of the Dead spawned a franchise that includes several sequels and spin-offs, as well as a remake. Uwe Boll directed a film adaptation back in 2003, and that received a sequel in 2005 that was directed by Michael Hurst. Now, Anderson is plotting an adaptation that he promises will be “very, very scary.”

If there's anyone who knows how to bring a video game to life on the big screen, it's director Paul W.S. Anderson. Not only has he helmed six Resident Evil movies over the course of his career, but he also directed 1995's Mortal Kombat, and 2020's Monster Hunter, which was based on the popular series of games by Capcom. Now he's at it again with a new adaptation of House of the Dead, which he says is going to be something very "different" for him.
Speaking with Variety to promote his latest release, In the Lost Lands, Anderson touched a little on House of the Dead, which is the third adaptation of the action horror game franchise following Uwe Boll's 2003 version, and the direct-to-dvd sequel helmed by Michael Hurst in 2006. The fine folks of Netflix can be sneaky little devils sometimes. Case in point: even though it wasn't announced with their regular slate of releases, Venom: The Last Dance made its bow on the streamer on February 25th. They decided to really up their stealth release game with a dozen more titles on Saturday. That's in addition to the 12 already on the slate.
This turned what was already a strong debut slate into an outstanding group. You'll find iconic comedies with some of the most popular stars of Hollywood, a trio of classic romances, and some knife-edge thrillers. There's drama and action, too.
There's also a pair of underrated horror flicks ready for your screen. Best of all is the addition of the finest films from one the most influential directors of the past 40 years. Like all art forms, film is subjective. But rest assured, I'm not talking about Uwe Boll...

Get a first look at Armie Hammer dealing out vigilante justice in the Uwe Boll movie The Dark Knight
The concept for this upcoming film almost sounds like a throwaway punchline in a comedy — “Controversial acting figure Armie Hammer will attempt to make a comeback…but it will be in an Uwe Boll movie. This movie will be about a vigilante who deals his own brand of justice and it’s titled…The Dark Knight.” However, not only is this movie happening, it’s already well into production in Zagreb, Croatia. Boll stated, “The story of The Dark Knight couldn’t be a more current topic, and I’m excited to bring it to life with this excellent cast.”
You can now get a new look at The Dark Knight as Variety has shared a couple of new images from the production. Additionally, the cast has added Costas Mandylor, who is a regular actor in the Saw franchise. The Dark Knight is based on an original script by Boll,...

Actor Armie Hammer was on the rise when his career took a major hit in 2021. At the time, allegations of misconduct were leveled against Hammer, and offers for new roles in Hollywood films immediately dried up.
After four years, Hammer is looking to get his acting career back on the rails. He has recently been hosting a podcast, looking to show another side of himself as he takes on more acting work. Per Variety, his next role will see him playing a vigilante in a movie called The Dark Knight. While the movie happens to share a title with a beloved film directed by revered filmmaker Christopher Nolan, it is not a DC project focused on Batman... though, with Hammer in the lead, it's still starring someone who was once also cast as the popular superhero.

Director Uwe Boll has a reputation as one of the worst film directors of all time. In the mid-2000s, he helmed a string of well-publicized but critically savaged video game adaptations that immediately sunk to the bottom of cineastes' estimations. In 2003, he made "House of the Dead," and followed that in 2005 with both "Alone in the Dark" and "BloodRayne." He chased those with "In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale," "BloodRayne 2: Deliverance," and "Postal" all in 2007, and capped off his run in 2008 with "Far Cry." Fans of the games on which those films are based were incensed that Boll should so clumsily handle the source material, and fans of the cinematic medium were incensed that
Despite his critical reputation, Boll has remained prolific, sometimes helming multiple pictures a year. He directed "First Shift" and "Bandidos" in 2024, and is set to release "Run" in 2025.

As part of his comeback tour, embattled actor Armie Hammer is ready to gear up and dole out some justice as the star of Uwe Boll‘s latest feature, The Dark Knight. Principal photography for Boll’s vigilante thriller begins in Croatia on January 27, with Hammer eager to step into the scene.
According to Variety, The Dark Knight is based on an original script by Boll, with Hammer playing Sanders, “who takes justice into his own hands as he sets out to hunt down criminals. While his crusade transforms him into a social media sensation and a hero in the eyes of the public, the local police chief sees him as a menace to society and aims to take him down.”
“The story of ‘The Dark Knight’ couldn’t be a more current topic, and I’m excited to bring it to life with this excellent cast,” said Boll about his latest endeavor.

Hammer, whose career came to a screeching halt in 2021 following some pretty disturbing allegations of sexual misconduct, is set to play the lead in a movie called The Dark Knight from director Uwe Boll, who has previously helmed classics such as BloodRayne, House of the Dead, and Alone in the Dark.

Paul W.S. Anderson, best known for directing four of the original six Resident Evil movies, will bring another popular horror video game series to the big screen with The House of the Dead. The House of the Dead video game series began in 1997, one year after the first Resident Evil game, and the two games not only made zombie shooters a popular genre but also helped revitalize the zombie for modern audiences. The House of the Dead's innovation of fast-moving zombies would inspire films like 28 Days Later and Zack Snyder's remake of Dawn of the Dead.
Deadline reports that Paul W.S. Anderson has signed on to direct the upcoming film adaptation of The House of the Dead. Anderson has made a name for himself by directing video game adaptations. Not only did he direct four Resident Evil movies, but he also helmed 1995's Mortal Kombat and 2020's Monster Hunter.

If you've ever set foot in an arcade, then you'll probably have encountered The House Of The Dead, Sega's legendary light-gun shoot 'em up. Famed for bringing running zombies to the turn of the millennium and helping spawn the zombie horror gaming boom alongside Resident Evil, the mainline Hotd franchise has spanned five games — and two woeful movies — to date. But, per Deadline's reporting, the undead hordes are now preparing to run back to the big screen once again courtesy of game-to-screen veteran Paul W.S. Anderson, director of Mortal Kombat, Monster Hunter, a fistful of _Resident Evil_s, and of course Event Horizon.

Resident Evil Director Sets Fourth Video Game Movie Adaptation With Another Classic Horror Franchise
After an infamously disastrous version in the early 2000s, House of the Dead is getting a second chance at an adaptation from Paul W.S. Anderson. The Sega action-horror franchise puts players in the shoes of a variety of protagonists as they make their way through a house full of zombie-like creatures, utilizing an on-rails system to keep the player moving through each level. House of the Dead was previously adapted by Uwe Boll in 2003, but is regarded as one of the worst movies of all-time, holding a 3% approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes.
Deadline has brought word that Anderson is teaming with Sega for an adaptation of House of the Dead. The filmmaker of Resident Evil fame will be writing, directing and producing it alongside his partner Jeremy Bolt, Sega's Toru Nakahara, Story Kitchen's Dmitri M. Johnson, Mike Goldberg and Dan Jevons, while Timothy I. Stevenson will executive produce.

Anderson is also going to produce alongside producing partner Jeremy Bolt, with whom he previously collaborated on Mortal Kombat, Resident Evil, and Monster Hunter adaptations. Over 20 years after Uwe Boll turned the video game The House of the Dead into a horror movie, Deadline reports that Paul W.S Anderson is making a House of the Dead movie of his own.
Paul W.S Anderson will write and direct the new adaptation of Sega’s zombie game, which debuted back in 1997 and spawned a franchise as well as a remake in 2022. That original game, along with Resident Evil, is credited for kickstarting the zombie resurgence of the time.

A mark of an unforgettable horror movie is either its impeccable quality, or its historic infamy. A horror movie could be immortalized as a genre classic either because it's a highly influential trendsetter, or because it's one of the worst things ever made. Horror movies that are just good, on the other hand, tend to be forgotten.
That's not to say that these particular horror movies were never good to begin with. On a rewatch, these horror movies could be seen as underrated or even great. The problem was that they either came out at the wrong time, or were brought down by circumstances beyond their control. It's only in hindsight when horror fans either realize that they were wrong to dismiss these movies when they first came out, or they only learned of them now.

Controversial German director Uwe Boll is officially back. The iconic yet often maligned mastermind best known for video game adaptations like BloodRayne, House of the Dead, and Alone in the Dark has been largely missing from the minds of U.S. audiences since his 2016 film Rampage: President Down. His latest title, First Shift, looks to change that as he returns to theaters in America at the end of August with an exploration of the high-octane, dangerous life of a rookie police officer. Collider can exclusively share the official trailer, which shines a light on the crime drama starring Kristen Renton as she experiences the highs and lows of the job and tries to break through to her tough-as-nails partner.

Konami may get a bad rap for having squandered the Silent Hill franchise in the years leading up to the recent series renaissance (which is set to culminate in both a big budget remake of Silent Hill 2 as well as a new Christophe Gans film), but there was a time when the company was criticized for releasing too much Silent Hill media in an attempt to keep the IP fresh in consumers’ minds.

For every horror movie that turns into a massively profitable hit, there are plenty more that didn't light up the box office. In fact, they continue to be made with such frequency in part because their budgets are usually low enough that it's pretty easy to recoup expenses with anything other than a total disaster. Still, there are plenty of times when horror films don't perform as well as expected. Sometimes they are reassessed years after release with much more favorable results, and the horror genre is rife with box office flops that became cult classics and underrated "masterpieces."
But then you've got the true, out and out stinkers. The films that couldn't even keep up the pretense of being merely a disappointment, and led their studios to pull them from theaters prematurely in an effort not to send good money after bad. Recent reports suggest Capcom is preparing to remake more Resident Evil games. It’s hardly a surprising report given both the quality of those recent remakes and the cultural power of the Resident Evil franchise. However, it is a reminder that Resident Evil has historically achieved a level of success that has eluded pretty much every other horror game franchise. The genre has long lived in the wake of Resident Evil, and it’s been that way since the ’90s when the first Resident Evil made such a seismic impact that much of what followed was called a clone.
Because of that, some of the earliest and most fascinating horror games have largely been ignored or otherwise forgotten about. Disaster films show characters trying to save the world or survive amid a natural disaster, offering huge thrills. From survival tales to apocalyptic comedies, the diverse approaches to disaster films on Prime Video provide intense entertainment.
The best disaster movies streaming on Prime Video tap into one of humanity's greatest and most revealing fears: the inevitable end of the world due to natural causes. Indeed, though highly overplayed in Western cinema, natural disaster stories perfectly lay the groundwork for characters and plots that tackle the very limits of human perseverance. In the face of Mother Nature's wrath, only the strongest survive - yet even those resigned to their doomed fates have stories worth telling. As seen with some of the genre's offerings on Prime Video, there are a lot of approaches to such a story.

If you’ve been keeping up with The Test of Time, you have probably learned what the rules are in terms of what we tackle. Those rules, of course, are that there are no rules whatsoever and we cover whatever sounds good or we think would be an interesting topic. In the Mouth of Madness (watch it Here) came out in Italy in late 1994 and that means, gulp, that movie is now 30 years old. It came during an interesting time in the master of horrors career when he was running flop after flop and being disappointed by studios interference and stars that weren’t willing to be true collaborators. It’s the ending of a loose trilogy and in some people’s estimation his last great film. Is In the Mouth of Madness a tale that stands the Test of Time, or should it be put in the bargain bin...

Ah the early 2000s. The Xbox, PlayStation 2 and Nintendo GameCube were the hottest videogame consoles around. Limp Bizkit, Smash Mouth, Jennifer Lopez, Janet Jackson, and Usher were ruling the airwaves and little did we know we would be blessed with tons of horror video game movie adaptations as well. Granted, some weren’t that great, looking at you House of the Dead, Doom and Alone in the Dark. But there also were some fun films from this genre…Silent Hill and Resident Evil. At the time, both weren’t exactly loved by critics, but they did have their fans and have each spawned sequels. Today, we’re looking at the first Resident Evil (watch it Here) on this episode of Horror Revisited.
Let’s start back in January 1997. Resident Evil had already released on the Playstation One to critical fame as well as being adored by gamers. A German Production...

Upon every high-profile adaptation of game to screen, anticipation takes the shape of a curious question: “Will this be the first good one?” Indeed, summoning to mind the back catalog invites House of the Dead, BloodRayne, and Alone in the Dark. These movies were so aggressively bad that they had an outsized influence on our perception of an entire genre. Release a few of their more respectable peers from their contexts, however — chiefly, the expectation that each one had to be the proverbial “first good one” — and there are a few gems.

Sony's upcoming Gran Turismo movie will blend gaming and real-life experiences. Based on the acclaimed PlayStation video game franchise of the same name, the coming-of-age racing film is inspired by the true story of Jann Mardenborough. When offered the chance to take part in a real professional race, the avid Gran Turismo player wins a series of video game competitions to live out his dream. Voyagers' Archie Madekwe stars as Mardenborough, and Stranger Things' Police Chief Hopper David Harbour portrays his trainer Jack Salter.
Speaking with Total Film (via GamesRadar), Gran Turismo director Neill Blomkamp explained how his new film will blend gaming and real life. In an attempt to translate Mardenborough's love and proficiency of the Gran Turismo video game into real-world racing, Blomkamp revealed he virtually "overlays" the character's perspective into reality. Historically, horror movies have tended to have lower budgets than films in other genres. A large part of this is probably due to the origins of the genre. Slasher films become something of a cultural phenomenon in the 1970s, when movies like "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre" and "Halloween" in many ways revolutionized the film industry. Such films were usually made on the cheap and relied on clever practical effects and location shooting to deliver the onscreen goods. But what really made these films so influential is that from these modest origins, they killed at the box office, revolutionizing the genre as we know it today.
Since the 1970s, movies of all genres have gotten more expensive to make, and not all of these films can earn back their production costs. While horror has remained an extremely popular genre both in the States and worldwide, scary movies are just as...

With the releases of The Last of Us on HBO and The Super Mario Bros. Movie in theaters, video game adaptations have become part of the entertainment industry conversation in a major way. In old times, video games were seen as a poor source for adaptations; movies such as Double Dragon, Wing Commander, and House of the Dead made it appear as if the concept was cursed. However, more and more adaptations have broken this trend, proving to either be massively financially successful, massively critically successful, or both, creating a surge of interest in the medium.

Video games have been a huge part of popular culture for decades now, particularly following the home console boom in the '80s. In all that time, few games have endured quite like "Tetris" has. It's become an absolute staple of this era, with people playing the simple yet addicting game for hours on end on the original Game Boy, the Nes, or at their nearest arcade. So, perhaps it's only fitting that, in an era when video game movies are finally starting to click in a real way, this beloved title would finally get the big screen treatment. No, it's not an adaptation. Rather, it's more of a biopic in the form of director Jon S. Baird's "Tetris," which arrives on Apple TV+ this week. In a roundabout way, it instantly earns its place as one of the greatest video game movies to date.

Video game adaptations: one of cinema’s most hated-on subgenres. Whenever another beloved controllable franchise is announced for moviegoing treatment, eyes roll. Critics quiver. Visions of Mark Wahlberg as Max Payne or Uwe Boll’s crimes against both gamersphere credibility and audience standards montage a hard-fast argument for such scoffs.
Fantastical play-alongs turned theatrical try-hards have long become the butt of many online jokes, and while titles such as Detective Pikachu and both Sonic the Hedgehog films disprove “cursed” trends, I’d argue that not all video game adaptations are created equal.
Horror video game adaptations maketh the best video game adaptations, and that’s by an Arklay country mile.
“But Matt…House of the Dead?”

Its retirement is long overdue anyway, but the raves given to HBO's The Last Of Us should finally kill the all video game adaptations "suck" argument to rest. Video games are still a relatively young art form, and it took a little time for them to reach their storytelling potential. First and foremost, a game should entertain with its mechanics and gameplay, but titles such as Silent Hill 2, Shadow of the Colossus, Red Dead Redemption and many more proved they could tell fantastic stories too. In 2013, the original The Last Of Us game joined that list.
On the surface, The Last Of Us may have looked like another zombie apocalypse game, but aside from its absorbing gameplay, it featured great acting and a heartbreaking narrative too. It didn't take long for rumors of a movie adaptation to arrive, but despite filmmakers like Sam Raimi being attached, a film version didn't come together.

Boll is marking his return after seven years with an action thriller titled ‘12 Hours’.
German director Uwe Boll is making his filmmaking comeback with two features in the works.
After a seven-year hiatus from the industry, that included setting up a restaurant in Canada, Boll is marking his return with an action thriller titled 12 Hours. The feature follows a man who returns with his family to Cape Town, South Africa, for his mother’s funeral, only for his whole family to get kidnapped, leaving him with 12 hours to kill five people to get his family back.

Among many other things, the Game Boy line of handheld hardware legitimized the concept of gaming on the go. The quality of the original Game Boy hardware itself inspired developers everywhere to pursue ambitious new ideas that changed the handheld gaming landscape forever. Of course, just because the Game Boy legitimized the handheld gaming scene doesn’t mean that there weren’t plenty of developers looking to use that legitimization as an excuse to get weird with things.
Yes, while so many of us spent our years with the Game Boy line playing classics like Tetris and Pokémon, those who ventured off the beaten path may have discovered a few oddities that defied logic. Whether those games got you through long car rides and waiting rooms is something only you can answer. What I can tell you is that anyone who played some of the wildest and weirdest Game Boy games likely never forgot them.

The new year is continuing apace at Hulu. The streamer’s list of new releases for February 2022 is highlighted by one very interesting project.
Pam and Tommy is set to premiere on Feb. 2. Perhaps the Groundhog Day release date is intentional as the show will cover a particular moment of celebrity, sex, and exploitation from the early ’90s that seems to have repeated itself over and over. Sebastian Stan and Lily James star as Tommy Lee and Pamela Anderson and the series follows the events and fallout of their homemade sex tape being stolen and unleashed on a nascent internet. If nothing else, getting the promo photos of Stan and James as the ’90s stars was worth it.

Fernando Díaz’s Machaco Films and Roxana Ramos’ Aramos Cine have partnered to set up a joint venture: La Puerta Roja, focused on horror and fantasy movies as well as working with prominent genre directors from Ibero-America. Both companies are based in Buenos Aires.
The idea sprang from Machaco and Aramos’s co-production partnership on Demian Rugna’s next project “When Evil Lurks.” Machaco had already produced Rugna’s “Terrified,” awarded at the Austin Fantastic Fest among a flurry of international kudos, and whose remake rights were acquired by Guillermo del Toro.
A cinema-tv production company, Machaco Films was founded over 20 years ago. Productions include Fernando Díaz’s “Soul’s Square,” and Rossana Díaz Costa’s “Trip to Timbuktu” and “A World for Julius,” based on Alfredo Bryce Echenique’s same-titled novel.

It’s summer, everyone! And with its relatively sparse list of new releases for July 2021, Hulu seems to be subtlety imploring its subscribers to go outside.
Don’t get us wrong: Hulu’s library offerings get a big upgrade this month. July 1 sees the arrival of great films like Galaxy Quest, Fargo, and Caddyshack. Bill and Ted Face the Music premieres on July 2 and its followed by Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar on July 9. Not bad stuff! It’s just that, outside of the library titles, there isn’t much to go off of.
Hulu’s only major original release this month is the FX on Hulu production American Horror Stories on July 15. As its name implies, the show is a spinoff of American Horror Story and will feature self-contained horror episodes rather than a season-long arc. Doom is, without a doubt, one of if not the best First-Person Shooters (Fps) of all time. The highly influential game arguably kick-started the entire shooter genre, and its latest games are about to do the same again. The franchise’s cinematic outings, however, are nowhere near as good. Despite being one of the most important games ever made, Doom inspired note one but two underwhelming live-action adaptations.

Yes, folks, you read that header correctly, the original House of the Dead and its sequel are officially getting the remake treatment.
News of Sega’s classic arcade games being revived first made headlines last week via Polish website Graczpospolita, which stipulated that studio Forever Entertainment would be overseeing the series’ return to the limelight. The developer has since confirmed via social media that it has in fact signed an agreement “regarding remakes of the games,” though sadly, not the platforms on which the pair will appear.

It wasn’t that long ago that the Resident Evil series fell out of favor with both the fans and critics alike. After the massive success of Resident 4, the developers seemed to lose sight of what made gamers fall in love with the series in the first place.
Resident Evil 5 and 6 were not well received and both games instead decided to focus on blockbuster-style action and set pieces rather than horror. Even though the games played similarly to Resident 4, they lacked any of the tension and excitement of that game.
Resident Evil 4 was a landmark title that was an influence on titles like Dead Space, Gears of War, and even the Uncharted series. Unfortunately, the cost of trying to replicate the success of the fourth title came at the price of innovation and by the time Resident Evil 5 was released it already felt old and clunky compared to newer titles.
