Game shows are the foundation of hopes, fond memories, and major messes; at least they are on the iconic Nickelodeon network. While Nickelodeon is often celebrated for its cartoons, live-action sitcoms, and sketch comedies, its channels also turned children's game shows into an art form. From the late '80s through the modern era, these shows helped shape the television landscape. Looking back at Nickelodeons most unique, memorable, and gloriously sloppy game shows paints a vivid, neon-colored picture of how it became one of the most nostalgic icons in pop culture today.
Founded in 1977 and originally called Pinwheel, Nickelodeon proudly billed itself as "the first cable channel for children." With shows like You Can't Do That on Television, All That, and the now iconic SpongeBob SquarePants, Nickelodeon consistently found innovative ways to entertain young audiences. However, everything changed in 1986 with the production of one of its first dedicated game shows,...

Everyone knows Mel Blanc, who voiced the majority of the Loonie Tunes, as the man of a thousand voices, but another contender for that title is Dee Bradley Baker. Born in Bloomington, Indiana, he graduated with a BA in philosophy from Colorado College and even studied abroad in Germany. After working on sketch comedy and community theater projects, Baker moved to Orlando, Florida, where he landed a role on the Nickelodeon show Legends of the Hidden Temple. From there, he voiced the father on Cartoon Network's Cow and Chicken, which opened the door for more voice-acting possibilities in television, film, and video games.

TV networks come and go. While the state of cable TV now isn’t particularly stable amid the constant streaming wars, TV network deaths have always been monumental funerals. Corporate mergers, changes in demographics, and budget cuts all contributed to channel deaths during the early 21st century that crushed my spirits – long before Netflix even cast the first streaming stone.
Not a day goes by when I don’t reflect upon my childhood spent watching programming on long-gone networks. These networks gave unrepresented artists platforms, brought audiences of underserved demographics together, and ultimately established specific TV identities. These are a few channels that deserve a second or third shot at life.
Spike TV
Before it became the “Yellowstone and Friends” channel, also known as Paramount Network, Spike TV was machismo-television personified. Who doesn’t remember the days of watching Rambo, Star Wars marathons, and 1000 Ways to Die in rotation?...

Cartoons can be pretty weird, and the Cartoon Network series "Adventure Time" is definitely one of the weirder ones. It follows a human boy named Finn (Jeremy Shada) and his best friend, a dog with silly putty-like characteristics named Jake (John Dimaggio). Created by Pendleton Ward, the series takes place in the post-apocalyptic, magical land of Ooo, full of princesses and monsters and all kinds of wild adventures for Finn and Jake to get up to. It ran for 10 seasons on Cartoon Network before getting spin-offs, won multiple Emmys, and had a huge cultural impact that even served as the "structural godfather" for Donald Glover's surreal FX series "Atlanta."
Back when the series was still in its infancy, however, one of its most important contributors didn't understand "Adventure Time" at all. In an oral history of the series for the LA Times, Dimaggio revealed that he struggled to fully wrap...

Discontinued is a new show that explores the biggest flops and failures of recent decades, including the BlackBerry and Legends of the Hidden Temple. The show was originally conceived years ago and had a different pilot episode that was ultimately canceled. However, the show has now been revived with the help of Ryan Reynolds' Maximum Effort and host Bruce Campbell. Maximum Effort's involvement in the show has elevated its quality and added a darker comedy vibe. The show aims to cover multi-generational topics and iconic products, while also highlighting some bizarre and unsuccessful ideas, such as Harley-Davidson cologne.

What do Furbies, Talkboys, Star Wars hotels, and Legends of the Hidden Temple have in common? They're all no longer in service or production, otherwise known as "discontinued." On that note, there's a new series of the same name debuting Thursday on Fubo via Ryan Reynolds' Maximum Effort Channel. Discontinued explores the past eras, products and phenomena that have been taken off the shelves, and in a darkly humorous sort of way, each selection that's explored on the show becomes a stark reminder, ironically, of why they were so beloved in the first place.

Writer, producer, actor and comedian Cristela Alonzo has been tapped to host The CW’s “Legends of the Hidden Temple,” a reboot of the hit ’90s game show.
The “Cristela” and “Cars 3” star will assume her role as a “host with stature who also has the humor of a stand-up and the energy of a camp counselor,” according to Scott A. Stone, creator and executive producer of the show.
Based on the Nickelodeon game show created by David G. Stanley, Scott A. Stone and Stephen R. Brown, “Legends of the Hidden Temple” involves four teams competing in various obstacle course challenges in a mysterious jungle for a grand prize. The CW reboot will preserve fan-favorite elements of the original, including the “Olmec” (the giant talking Mayan head), the “Moat Crossings,” “The Steps of Knowledge” and the “Temple Run.”

The CW is the fifth — and final — broadcast network to firm up its fall 2021 schedule, and there are some big changes.
Riverdale is leaving Wednesdays behind after five seasons leading off the night.
The buzzy teen drama is moving to Tuesdays at 9/8c, out of The Flash.
It’s a big move, but clearly, one to bolster the ratings of the young-skewing drama.
It has been on a slippery slope in the ratings, much like many of the other CW series, so the move is hardly a big surprise.
The CW is also touting both The Flash and Riverdale kicking off with “five-episode events.”
The Flash‘s five-episode event will feature crossovers with Arrowverse characters.
“We’re talking about other superheroes from the CWverse that will come together in each [of the] individual episodes,” CW CEO Mark Pedowitz said of the news.

Updated with CW schedule: It’s going to feel a lot like 2005 on the Big 4 this fall, and Saturday nights are alright for programming for the CW.
The former is a flashback from the George W. Bush era, when NCIS, CSI and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit all held dominant spots in the primetime lineups. And CBS and NBC are hoping history repeats itself in 2021 with the latest iterations of those franchises hitting the small screen this year, with some original cast members in tow.

After the pandemic forced The CW to hold much of its original programming until midseason and left the fall stacked with mostly acquisitions and imports, the youngest-skewing broadcast network is coming back strong in the 2021-2022 season with a lineup that shakes up every single night of the week except one. Oh, and as TheWrap previously reported, The CW also has one more night of programming this fall, with the addition of Saturday to the mix.

The CW has given out series orders to the DC project “Naomi” and “All American: Homecoming,” a spinoff of the high school football drama “All American.”
In addition, the network has decided to rework its pilot for “Powerpuff,” a live-action followup to the animated series “The Powerpuff Girls.” The show’s four leads — Chloe Bennet, Dove Cameron, Yana Perrault, and Donald Faison — remain attached to the project, as does the remainder of the cast and the creative team behind the show. The network will film a new pilot for the series off-cycle. The show generated significant interest from the time it was first reported as being in development and was seen as a strong contender for a pickup going into pilot season.
The potential “Nancy Drew” spinoff “Tom Swift” remains in contention at the network. The character, played by Tian Richards, recently appeared in an episode of “Nancy Drew.” And finally,...

If you've been wondering how The CW will schedule the lengthy amount of shows it has renewed for the 2021-22 TV season, we have an answer.
The network has announced plans to become a seven-nights-a-week outlet, confirming it will air content on Saturdays for the first time ever.
The news means the network will be increasing its output from 12 hours a week to 14, and in turn, having a wider array of content on the air at one time.
CW has long been a network that looked at the bigger picture when it comes to ratings, with many of its shows getting more traffic on DVR and on-demand than the linear network.
But the network also has many lucrative streaming deals for its roster of shows.
“Becoming a seven-night-a-week network has been a long-standing goal for everyone here at The CW,” Rob Tuck, EVP of National Sales, said in a statement.

Olmec will have plenty to say about this. The CW is reviving the Legends of the Hidden Temple game show but, this time, adults will be competing.
The original Legends of the Hidden Temple series ran for three seasons on Nickelodeon, from 1993 until 1995, and features six teams of two kids competing against each other. The object of the game is to retrieve one of the historical artifacts in an ancient Mayan-like temple with Olmec (voice of Dee Bradley Baker), a giant stone head located at the entrance. The teams perform physical stunts and answer questions based on history, mythology, and geography. The program was hosted by Kirk Fogg.

If you ever dreamed of competing on Nickelodeon's Legends of the Hidden Temple but it ended before you had the chance, we have got some very good news for you. The CW has ordered a "reimagined" version of the popular kids' game show, and while many classic elements of the show will remain (including the team names!), there are two very big things changing. The show is now set in an actual jungle, and it's for adults! Ok, the press release calls it a "jungle," in quotes, but at the very least, it's no longer set in a studio. However, this "jungle" will still feature things like the giant talking head named Olmec, the Steps of Knowledge, the Moat and the Temple...

“Legends of the Hidden Temple” is headed back to the small screen, but not in its original kid-friendly format. The Nickelodeon competition adventure series from the 1990s is all grown up in the revival ordered Tuesday by the CW.
The original Nickelodeon series that aired from 1993-1995 was inspired by Nintendo’s “The Legend of Zelda” game and the “Indiana Jones” movie franchise. The new iteration is described as a supersized and reimagined adult version, so participants are no longer kids, but nostalgia-loving millennials.
Per the logline, the “Legends of the Hidden Temple” remake, based on the game show created by David G. Stanley, Scott A. Stone and Stephen R. Brown, will preserve many of the Nickelodeon series’ iconic elements. These include “Olmec,” the giant talking Mayan head, the “Moat Crossings,” “The Steps of Knowledge,” the “Temple Run,” and all of the original team names like “Purple Parrots,” “Blue Barracudas,...

The CW is hunting for the Legends of the Hidden Temple after ordering a reboot of the classic Nickelodeon adventure format. This comes after the series was previously set to be rebooted by the short-lived short-form service Quibi.
The reboot will be produced by Stone & Company, which produced the original series that ran on Nickelodeon for three seasons between 1993-1995.
The adult version will preserve many of the original show including Olmec, the giant talking Mayan head, the Moat Crossings, The Steps of Knowledge and the Temple Run as well as the team names such as Purple Parrots, Blue Barracudas, Orange Iguanas, Red Jaguars, Silver Snakes and Green Monkeys.
However, this version will be taken out of the studio and scaled up with tougher challenges and bigger prizes as the contestants find their way through the “jungle.”

Nickelodeon has found a new human companion for Blue, the animated canine who tries to lead kiddie viewers to pre-school literacy.
The Viacom kids-media unit intends to launch a new season of “Blue’s Clues,” which first debuted in 1996., with a new host and name. The revival, which will be called “Blue’s Clues & You,” and run on the Nick Jr. cable network aimed at pre-schoolers, stars Broadway actor Joshua Dela Cruz and will launch production this month in Toronto. All aboard the nostalgia train! Nickelodeon is bringing back the kids game show Double Dare. The original series is also Nick's longest-running one, from 1986 to 1993. It ushered in an era where physically-oriented game shows dominated the scene, from Guts to Legends of the Hidden Temple. Sadly, those all went by the wayside in the early 2000s, with only a few established TV series on broadcast, like American Ninja Warrior, occasionally running a "junior" event.
