Out Of The Ashes
Deadline reported that the iconic set will be the location of Y&r’s big milestone it seems. The new set’s unveiling moved Eric Braeden (Victor) to tears. Melody Thomas Scott (Nikki) also had a few tears in her eyes after touring the new Newman ranch.
Viewers will remember that Sharon (Sharon Case) burned down the ranch in 2012. Now, Victor had the original home rebuilt, and Nikki will learn this on November 8.
Josh Griffith, head writer and executive producer, told the publication, “The Newman Ranch burning down was an emotional story for the Newmans, but it was not lost on us that the Newman family and Genoa City just weren’t the same without Victor and Nikki’s original home.

[Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for The Walking Dead Season 11 Episode 5, “Out of the Ashes.”] Ross Marquand has given us a new nickname for Aaron: “The Hardass with a Heart of Gold.” In “Out of the Ashes,” Alexandria’s ever-diplomatic, kindhearted-to-a-fault leader leaned hard into the first half of that title. Desperate to keep Alexandria going and enraged by the realization that the Whisperers were still out there and could still be a threat, he tortured one of the former baddies for information—and he even let a walker bite the guy. Season 5 Aaron would never! We chatted with Marquand about what it was like to explore his character’s dark side, why Aaron’s so determined to remain in Alexandria and, just for fun, where he thinks Aaron would fit in the Commonwealth. Josh Stringer/AMC Last time we talked about Aaron, you said you thought he was coming to realize that you can “be a nice person,...

Sunday’s episode of The Walking Dead led Eugene out on a limb, took Aaron right up to the edge, brought Maggie and Negan to the point of fisticuffs and delivered to Carol a sliver of hope — and the recap below has all the details.
‘I Haven’T Met A Whisperer That Wasn’T A Liar’ | After a stylized prologue in which Aaron and Gracie were stalked in his nightmare by Wolves, Whisperers and everything in between, “Out of the Ashes” sent our one-armed protagonist to the ruins of Hilltop with Carol, Lydia and Jerry in hopes of retrieving tools...

[Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for The Walking Dead Season 11, Episode 5, “Out of the Ashes.”] With everything that’s currently happening on The Walking Dead—and the lengthy breaks between seasons—the Whisperer arc now seems like it happened decades ago. But in “Out of the Ashes,” it’s clearer than ever that Alexandria’s old foes haven’t entirely faded away. Elsewhere, Team Eugene (Josh McDermitt) is inducted into the Commonwealth, and Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) come to a few awkward blows. Here’s how it happens. Josh Stringer/AMC Alexandria’s latest solution to the food problem and the fence-collapsing problem—which nearly floods the community with walkers in the opening minutes—is to head over to the destroyed Hilltop, in hopes they can find a few salvageable supplies. A team consisting of Aaron (Ross Marquand), Carol (Melissa McBride), Lydia (Cassady McClincy), and Jerry (Cooper Andrews) makes the trip ...

The Walking Dead Season 11 Episode 5
One of the appeals of the post-apocalyptic world of The Walking Dead is that there’s no real government except that which is chosen by the people locally. There aren’t people a thousand miles away telling you how to live your life, what you can and cannot do. That’s why you can have democracies like Alexandria existing right next door to death cults like The Whisperers, oligarchies like The Saviors right next to survival of the fittest bands like The Wolves, and why a return to the civilization offered by the Commonwealth isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Sure, on the surface it’s great. There’s ice cream, children playing in the streets, and everyone is given a job based on their pre-fall life. Then you realize it takes five weeks for...

When AMC released the official synopsis for The Walking Dead’s 11th and final season last week, fans could be forgiven for being a little disappointed.
On an action-heavy show known for shambling hordes of corpses and terrifying villains, the description seemed to fall short of final season expectations. After your characters have confronted cultish freaks who wear the skin of the dead to blend in, concepts like food insecurity don’t seem quite so cinematic.
Now, as part of its “11 Weeks of Reveals Until Season 11” of The Walking Dead, AMC has unveiled titles for the final season’s first eight episodes and some additional descriptions of the two-part season premiere. And you know what? The season premiere gets such a cool episode name that food insecurity suddenly sounds a lot more compelling. First, the episode titles…

As UK independent production Miss Willoughby and the Haunted Bookshop wrapped shoot this week, the film’s co-star Kelsey Grammer offered some thoughts to stateside actors.
“Although Covid presented a new set of challenges, we were able to work very effectively through new standards of film production,” the Frasier alum said today. “I would urge my family of actors at SAG-AFTRA to take a page out of the British playbook; we can responsibly get back to work.”
Grammer stars with Brit actress Nathalie Cox (Kingdom of Heaven) in the family-adventure, which follows the escapades of history professor, detective and adventurer Elizabeth Willoughby, who investigates a series of hauntings at an antique bookshop. Grammer plays a retired U.S. Marine who raised the orphaned Willoughby and runs the family business.

Joss Whedon originally had some different endings for Alien: Resurrection. Ryan looks at how Whedon's ideas were changed for the final cut.
In the beginning, it was supposed to be Dan Hedaya who got sucked out into space. His character, General Martin Perez, was originally set to exit Alien: Resurrection in spectacularly bloody fashion - his entire body ejected, limb by limb, through a whole in a tennis ball-sized hole in the space ship, Auriga.
Effects company Amalgamated Dynamics, Inc, spent several weeks in 1996 solving the problem of having a body pulled apart realistically by the vacuum of space. Test footage released by Adi shows the painstaking process of researching and testing practical means of creating Hedaya's death scene, which would have concluded with his character's screaming head stripped of its skin until only a gaping skull remained.
The results were almost comically grotesque and almost mesmerising to watch - so mesmerising,...

Out of the ashes of Survivor Series, WWE offered up quite a tepid episode of Monday Night Raw. The program opened up with another lengthy diatribe, before degenerating into a show filled with characters that don’t often get house room these days. The likes of Mark Henry, Heath Slater and even El Torito (in a backstage segment) were all featured throughout Raw.
Looking at social media response, this didn’t do much for many watching the broadcast. There was an overwhelming sense that the company were simply killing time, which can sometimes happen at this time of year. It’s almost as though WWE want to power through to the Royal Rumble, which is when ‘WrestleMania Season’ can begin.
It’s all very well and good to look to ‘Mania, but WWE have a lot of television to produce before reaching the At&T Stadium. There’s...

Since 2011's The Walking Dead: Rise of the Governor, fans of Robert Kirkman's living dead world have been able to get their Walking Dead fix in novel form in addition to the comic book series and TV show. Last year, Kirkman and Jay Bonansinga kicked off a brand new 4-book series with The Walking Dead: Descent and it's now been announced that Bonansinga's follow-up novel, The Walking Dead: Invasion, will be unleashed in October. Along with its release date, the new zombie novel's cover art and synopsis have been revealed, with the latter teasing the apocalyptic challenges Lilly Caul will face this time around, including the deranged Reverend Jeremiah Garlitz.
From Thomas Dunne Books, The Walking Dead: Invasion is slated to hit shelves on October 6th. Here's the official synopsis:

Matt Wolf's Teenage follows the rise of youth culture, an early 20th century movement that empowered a younger generation who would become known as teenagers. Wolf utilizes archival footage as well as dramatizations to tell the tale of those both in the states and abroad who became disillusioned with the status quo and a world war that "gutted a generation." Out of the ashes rose a population of youth distrustful of their elders, a group eager to make their own unique mark on society.

There has been so much discussion about the topics that happened in the Arrow Season 1 finale that I almost forgot we hadn't checked back in with Starling City since then.
In "City of Heroes" we learned that instead of sticking around for the fallout from the disaster of Malcolm Merlyn's Undertaking, Oliver skipped town and let Starling City fend for itself.
That didn't seem like the reaction of a hero, did it?
As the city started to rebuild, Oliver had retreated to his island and only when Diggle and Felicity tracked him down did he return - not to act as the vigilante, but to attempt to save Queen Consolidated from a hostile takeover by Isabel Rochev (Arrow Season 2 guest star Summer Glau).

The French film industry has always been among the worlds most important……at least to film studies professors. Most French movies are either funded by the French government or made with the support of government-linked media companies. Filmmakers face little market pressure in the creative process. That helps explain why they’re so boring!
Starbuck opens this weekend so we here at We Are Movie Geeks have decided to post this article about our favorite French films. Okay, so Starbuck is technically a Canadian film shot in Quebec, but its French language so, in our eyes that makes it French! The Hollywood remake is already in the can. It stars Vince Vaughn. The remake was originally tilted Dickie Donor but they’ve changed it to Delivery Man, so you just know they’ve screwed it up bad. This list may not line up with that of your typical French Cinema scholar.

Photo credit: U.S. National Archives Stream on Flickr Eleven years ago today, our beloved New York City experienced one of the worst days in our history. Out of the ashes rose the resilience and strength of a community of caring that stretched well beyond our five boroughs, with citizens from across the country and around the globe reaching out to put their collective arms around us. Legions of volunteers arrived on the scene almost immediately, and thousands more spent years downtown, helping to rebuild our neighborhood. We will never forget that horrible day, and the gaping hole it created both in our skyline and in our hearts. Today we honor those who lost their lives - the thousands who perished in Washington, Shanksville, and here, including hundreds of our brave first responders. While we understand that everyone will acknowledge this solemn anniversary in their own way, we have assembled...

Out of the ashes and smoke rises something so evil, so monstrous, that the town is forever cursed. This creature is known as The Goblin…and he waits for the moments when he can seek his revenge!

Australian directors have walked away with three of the five awards handed out at the Pacific International Documentary Festival in Tahiti, Fifo 9.
The festival showcases documentaries that centre on issues relating to the Pacific or the lives of the people inhabiting the area.
Natasha Gadd and Rhys Graham picked up the Grand Prix prize for Murandak, Songs of Freedom. The documentary provides an insight into Aboriginal protest music as it follows Indigenous musician supergroup, the Black Arm Band, from the Outback to the Sydney Opera House. Murundak, which means .alive. in Woirurrung language, explores the elements of sorrow and resistance in Indigenous protest music, and features pioneering singes such as Archie Roach, Bart Willoughby, and the late Ruby Hunter.
The Special Jury prize was shared by The Hungry Tides director, Tom Zubrycki, and Ochre & Ink director, James Bradley.
The Hungry Tides explores the vulnerability of the Pacific in relation to climate change.

As we prepare to commemorate the 10th anniversary of 9/11, Discovery have spent hours with the people helping to turn the devastated site into a monument to the tragedy. But just what is happening in downtown New York? Out of the ashes of the World Trade Center, into which terrorists flew two passenger planes on the morning of September 11 2001, a new structure is being born on the 16-acre complex.

Maple Pictures will release the Goblin on DVD July 26th. This feature originally showed on the SyFy network in 2010. Since then, Goblin has been called: "nothing fantastical" and "nothing frightening" (DVD Verdict). However, some fans might enjoy a story of a deformed child, curses and a whining step-child (DVD Verdict). You get your chance to throw a "deformed child into the inferno" (Maple) in just a couple weeks and the DVD artwork for Goblin is posted left.
The synopsis for Goblin is here:
"In 1831, on the eve of Halloween, the villagers of Hollow Glen engage in an annual festival where they toss their diseased crops into a blazing fire, in hopes of blessing them with an abundant field for the next year. But when one couple takes the ritual too far and throws their sickly, deformed child into the inferno, their murderous action results in something far more horrific than they could have imagined.

As an actor, curating a feast of factual film-making showed me the beauty of the subjective truth, says Diana Quick
Aldeburgh cinema in Suffolk is not all it seems. From the outside, it looks like a half-timbered shop at the end of the high street. Within, it's an independent picture house that's been screening films for nearly a century. It's a proper community staple: to save it from shutting in the 1960s, a group of locals, including Benjamin Britten, clubbed together to buy it and then run it themselves. Year after year I've gone there to see mainstream releases, international arthouse films and special treats – I still remember introducing a bunch of teenagers to White Christmas at the cinema, one wintry day. I think it's ambitiously programmed every day of the year, but especially so for the three days its annual documentary festival comes around.

UK audiences lap up 3D horror, while Simon Pegg's Burke and Hare makes an unpromising debut in sixth place
The winner
Anyone who still needs persuading regarding the potential of 3D to re-energise flagging film brands need look no further than the current success of Lionsgate's Saw 3D. Having peaked in 2006 with Saw III, which opened with £2.52m, debuts for the Halloween staple dipped slightly for the fourth and fifth instalments, before diving to £1.74m with Saw VI. Now episode seven arrives with an opening salvo of £3.6m, including £659,000 in previews. Even with the Thursday takings stripped out, that's comfortably the biggest-ever opening for a Saw movie. Rival studio Paramount will be hoping for a similar uplift when it releases Jackass 3D on Friday.
The loser
Considering it distributed the first two entries in the Saw franchise, it must have been moderately galling for the UK's independently owned Entertainment...

Welcome to the first Close up, the weekly email from Guardian Film, covering the week's big cinema news, blogs and all the new releases
It is, officially, Autumn. You can tell not because of the leaves falling from the tress, nor the advent of Halloween (nor, even, the slightly opportunistic Clip Joint on fancy dress), but from the fact that the previous season, Film Season, is now over.
From mid-September to mid-October, we went a bit movie bananas. There was the Film & Music Power 100, the DVD giveaways and downloads, Commission Us, the Twitpitch challenge, the "name the films" challenge, the week liveblogging films from the TV. The whole thing ended with guides to the best films in seven genres. I've been really enjoying looking through the comments and reaction, especially the polls we ran for each supplement asking you to rank our choices; so interesting to see where the critics are in-step with general opinion,...

In our latest World Cinema column, we take a look at how tax breaks affect the movie industry, and how they kept The Hobbit in New Zealand...
Stop the press. The once peaceful and pleasant country of New Zealand is a land on the brink of disaster. They're protesting in the streets! The Prime Minister has been forced to issue an emergency statement! And what about? Ah yes, the fact that The Hobbit might not be filmed there.
For those unfamiliar with the story, an acting union's threatened (but now resolved) boycott has led Warner Bros. to consider alternatives for their filming locations, citing the fact that the country can not be considered a stable environment for the production. In turn, this led to the protests and the intervention of Prime Minister John Key, who entered into talks with Warner.
As you can see from yesterday's story here, this appears to have been resolved,...

Easy A (15)
(Will Gluck, 2010, Us) Emma Stone, Penn Badgley, Amanda Bynes, Patricia Clarkson. 92 mins
There's always room for a smart-mouthed high-school comedy in a Juno/Mean Girls vein – it's just a pity they come along so rarely. This doesn't quite make that grade but it aims for it, tackling issues of virginity and sluttishness through the story of a nice girl who lies about who she's laid and suffers the fallout – especially from the Jesus freaks.
Carlos (15)
(Olivier Assayas, 2010, Fra/Ger) Edgar Ramírez, Alexander Scheer. 159 mins/334 mins
The life of the terrorist serves as a thrilling survey of cold war-era geopolitics in Assayas's swift, stylish, serious biopic, which covers a staggering amount of ground. See feature, p10.
Red (12A)
(Robert Schwentke, 2010, Us) Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman, Helen Mirren. 111 mins
Senior-citizen assassin comedy that gets away with a lot thanks to its cast. As a ride, it's more stairmaster than a rollercoaster.

The Edinburgh film festival aims to surprise. But in order to do that, it needs less Toy Story, less iffy Britcoms, less big name documentarians, and a little more clout
For the last couple of years, ever since the UK Film Council offered it a substantial grant linked to a change in the way it presented itself, the Edinburgh film festival has constantly referred to itself as a festival of "discovery" – in contrast, presumably, to the London film festival, which perhaps considers itself a festival of "celebrity".
But what does this mean in practice? All film festivals, by definition, enable people to "discover" films they may not yet know about or have forgotten; their stock-in-trade, however specialist, is a mix of pre-release previews, archive retrievals – and squads of that odd beast known as the "festival film", the submerged nine-tenths of the film production world that gets only one or two screenings in its lifetime,...

Two highly-anticipated second feature films from U.S. underground filmmakers will be making their World Premieres all the way over at the 64th annual Edinburgh International Film Festival, which will run for twelve days on June 16-27. The films are Rona Mark’s The Crab and Zach Clark’s Vacation!.
The Crab, which screens on June 21, is the touching story of a verbally abusive man born with two enormous, mutant-like hands; while Vacation!, which screens on June 20, tracks four urban gals let loose in a sunny seaside resort down South.
Both Mark and Clark previously screened their debut features at Eiff. Mark’s Strange Girls screened there in 2008 and Clark’s Modern Love Is Automatic screened in 2009. Both films also ended up as runners-up in Bad Lit’s annual Movie of the Year award, again Strange Girls in 2008 and Modern Love in 2009. Sadly, these two masterpieces are still unavailable on...

O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000) It's a fool that looks for logic in the chambers of the human heart. Synopsis You seek a great fortune, you three who are now in chains. You will find a fortune, though it will not be the one you seek. But first, first you must travel a long and difficult road, a road fraught with peril. Mm-hmm. You shall see things wonderful to tell. I cannot tell you how long this road shall be, but fear not the obstacles in your path, for fate has vouchsafed your reward. Though the road may wind, yea, your hearts grow weary, still shall ye follow them even unto your salvation. And John Goodman plays a cyclops.
