There is no actor that defines late '80s and '90s romantic comedies more than Meg Ryan. Her irrefutable movie star magnetism, combined with an incongruous sense of relatability, gave her an alluring aura that lent an undeniable "America's Sweetheart" charm to the films in which she starred. From 1989's "When Harry met Sally" to 1993's "Sleepless in Seattle" and 1998's "You Got Mail" — which remains dated in the most fun way possible — Meg Ryan was essentially the face of rom-coms for well over a decade, and deservedly so.
But Ryan wasn't only known for romancing Tom Hanks. Though the actor became synonymous with romantic comedies following "When Harry met Sally" (still one of the best Meg Ryan movies), she also starred in a wide variety of Hollywood fare, from her small role in 1986's "Top Gun" to playing Jim Morrison's girlfriend, Pamela Courson, in Oliver Stone's...

Meg Ryan's new romantic comedy, What Happens Later, has a mixed reception on Rotten Tomatoes with a 51% score from 35 critics. This continues a streak of negative reviews for Ryan, who hasn't had a Fresh-rated movie since 1998's You've Got Mail. Although not her highest-scoring film, What Happens Later is her best score in 22 years, coming close to reaching a Fresh rating.
Meg Ryan's new romantic comedy What Happens Later has continued a negative streak for the movie star on Rotten Tomatoes. Ryan is best known for her roles in classic rom-coms including When Harry Met Sally, Sleepless in Seattle, and You've Got Mail. In her latest movie, which she also directed and co-wrote, Ryan stars as Willa, a woman who accidentally runs into her ex Bill (David Duchovny) and winds up spending the night trapped in the airport with him when they get snowed in, which causes them to reminisce about their past.

Why Kerry Washington Declined Roles Stereotyping ‘White Girl’s Best Friend’ After Film with Meg Ryan
After acting with Meg Ryan in 2004’s “Against The Ropes,” Kerry Washington explained in her new memoir, “Thicker Than Water,” why she declined to play the “white girl’s best friend” role.

Washington portrayed Renee, Jackie Kallen’s best friend, who was portrayed by Ryan as the first and possibly most successful female boxing manager in history.
In an excerpt shared by Entertainment Weekly, Washington wrote, “In it, I played [Meg Ryan’s] coworker and confidante — this was becoming a new niche for me, the white girl’s best friend.”
In the book, she continued, “When Harry Met Sally” is, to this day, one of my top three movies of all time, so once I’d played Meg Ryan’s best friend, playing the role against anyone else would have been a lateral move.

Kerry Washington explains in her new memoir, “Thicker Than Water,” that she actively rejected playing the “white girl’s best friend” after starring in “Against the Ropes,” the 2004 boxing drama headlined by Meg Ryan and Omar Epps. The film starred Ryan as Jackie Kallen, the first woman to achieve success as a boxing manager. Washington played Jackie’s best friend, a receptionist named Renee.
“In it, I played [Meg Ryan’s] coworker and confidante – this was becoming a new niche for me, the white girl’s best friend,” Washington writes (via Entertainment Weekly).
As Washington remembers, “Against the Ropes” was her third project in a row where she was playing the best friend to the white female lead. First came 2001’s “Save the Last Dance,” in which was Julia Stiles’ Bff, then she shot the scrapped pilot for the 2004 Fox dramedy series “Wonderfalls,” where she was the best friend of Caroline Dhavernas’ main character.

Director Patrick Lussier and screenwriter Todd Farmer's new Halloween-themed horror flick Trick has just added Omar Epps to the cast which already includes the likes of Tom Atkins, and Jamie Kennedy. Ellen Adair and Kristina Reyes also star.
The story centers on an elusive serial killer, who descends upon a small town annually. He is responsible for gruesome murders year after year, each seemingly unrelated. No one believes this could be the same killer. Epps will be playing the lead role of Detective Denver who has faced Trick once before, having shot and killed him. Or so everyone keeps telling him. However, Denver knows Trick is still out there, and he's coming back for revenge.
Producer Ellen Wander stated this.
"We are thrilled to get into production with Omar and Patrick and can't wait to have this film be seen by audiences everywhere."

Our perception of the Forest City having only seen it on screen.
All this week, Cleveland, Ohio, is being overrun with politicians, their supporters, and protestors of their platforms as the Republican National Convention is being held at the Quicken Loans Arena through Thursday. To help get a better sense of this “Cleve-Land,” as Howard the Duck calls it, we’re looking to entertainment, specifically movies and television, for what it can tell us about this city. If there’s anything we miss or misunderstand, blame Hollywood.
Cleveland Rocks
It’s the Rock and Roll Capital of the World, home of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, so it’s not surprising that, to an outsider, Cleveland primarily looks like a city where music reigns. You could make a nice concert with all the fictional bands based there, including Cherry Bomb from Howard the Duck, The Barbusters from Light of Day, the...

Though cause of death is unknown at this point, Bartusiak states that her daughter had been suffering from epileptic seizures over the last several days and may have "had a seizure and choked and nobody was there." The actress had been experiencing seizures since the time she was a baby, though they ceased for several years before returning last week, according to her mother. "I've done CPR on that kid more than one time and it just didn't work this time," Bartusiak said, stating that paramedics also attempted resuscitation but could not get a heartbeat. Hogan 'Sad' Over Linda's Fight Allegations
Hulk Hogan has addressed his former wife Linda's claims she feared for her life when their arguments turned physical, insisting her allegations are untrue and he feels "sad" for her.
Linda filed for divorce from the wrestling champion in 2007, and in a new memoir entitled Wrestling the Hulk: My Life Against The Ropes, she claims she often feared for her safety during their marriage.
She makes a series of allegations against her former husband, accusing him of breaking furniture, destroying her clothes, and even grabbing her by the neck during one furious bust-up.
Now Hogan has taken to his Twitter.com blog to respond to Linda's comments, insisting she is bringing "negativity" into her life by going public with her claims.
He writes, "I'm so sad for Linda, I only pray that she changes her thinking and starts living with what's real, the truth, I'm sorry she's attracting more sadness and negativity into her life."...

Like the titular murderous cyborg, the Terminator franchise has been through the wringer but just keeps coming. And now there is a big development with the announcement that Arnold Schwarzenegger is aiming to return to the character that kicked his career into hyperdrive with a brand new outing. According to Deadline, the only parts of the package that exist right now are a deal to develop a new film with Schwarzenegger attached to star and Jumanji/Against the Ropes producer Robert Cort shepherding the project. Southpaw, The Fighter, Real Steel ... in these troubled times we can take comfort in a raft of films about battling underdogs
It shouldn't come as a surprise to anybody that Eminem is making another film – after making such a splash in 8 Mile eight years ago he's been soundly overtaken in the acting rapper stakes by everyone from Ludacris to Common to Lil Bow Wow – and nor should it be a surprise that he's got his eyes on a boxing film. As reported yesterday, Eminem's comeback vehicle will be Southpaw, the story of a boxer trying to fight his way back to glory after the world stops believing in him.

As reported yesterday, Eminem's comeback vehicle will be Southpaw, the story of a boxer trying to fight his way back to glory after the world stops believing in him.

Kallen gets in NBC's corner for 'Contender'
Famed boxing manager Jackie Kallen has joined NBC's boxing-themed reality show The Contender, from Mark Burnett, Sylvester Stallone and Jeffrey Katzenberg. Kallen, who was the inspiration for Meg Ryan's character in the feature Against the Ropes, will serve as "den mother" to the series' contestants -- 16 aspiring amateur pugilists. She will make sure they eat properly and train diligently and will support them as they go through a series of ring challenges for a shot at becoming a boxing star and winning $1 million.

Ryan To Reunite with Hanks?
Former Hollywood sweetheart Meg Ryan is looking to team up with old co-star Tom Hanks to help her secure a hit. Ryan's recent film releases In The Cut and Against The Ropes have failed to match her 80s and 90s successes Sleepless In Seattle, When A Man Loves A Woman and When Harry Met Sally. Ryan and Hanks' pairing has always guaranteed a box office hit - they first shared the screen in 1990's Joe Versus The Volcano, followed by 1993's rom-com Sleepless In Seattle and 1998's You've Got Mail. According to British magazine Now, Ryan has penned a screenplay Somewhere In Time for herself and Hanks, about two fortysomethings who are married to other people, but ultimately fall in love with each other. If all goes to plan, the film is expected to go into production next year after Hanks has finished making murder drama A Cold Case and Ryan completes the Cuban romance Papa.

Against the Ropes
Opens
Friday, Feb. 20
Inspired (very loosely) by the life of Jackie Kallen, the most successful female manager in boxing history, Against the Ropes finds Hollywood's longstanding love affair with the sport suffering from acute anemia.
Of course, it could be argued that this particular telling is really not so much a boxing picture as it is a story of one woman's personal triumph in a male-dominated arena, but the fast-flying cliches and distracted pacing would do both a disservice, particularly given winning performances by Meg Ryan and fellow cast members.
It also doesn't help that the Charles S. Dutton-directed film arrives one year later than originally planned. It was first pulled from the schedule when TV coverage of the war in Iraq put a dent in Paramount's original marketing campaign
then it was pushed back to allow ample attention for Ryan's much-touted, very different performance in Jane Campion's In the Cut.
Lacking that momentum and a clear-cut demo, Ropes will find itself going against the current boxoffice-wise, though it could eventually be a draw in the DVD ring.
Ryan's in fine form as Kallen, who in real life was a respected sportswriter, then owner of a successful public relations agency (her first client was boxer Thomas Hit Man Hearns) before she decided what she really wanted to do was to manage her own boxers. She also raised two children.
In the Hollywood version (credited to Save the Last Dance co-writer Cheryl Edwards), Kallen is the unmarried, childless daughter of a trainer who toils as executive secretary to the director of the Cleveland Coliseum (Joe Cortese).
That is, until the outspoken Kallen ends up verbally sparring with boxing kingpin Sam LaRocca (Tony Shalhoub), who ends up selling her the contract of one of his lesser fighters for a buck.
The guy proves to be a dud, but she subsequently finds a diamond in the rough in the form of Luther Shaw (Omar Epps), a drug dealer's enforcer with an impressive left hook.
Enlisting the services of retired trainer Felix Reynolds (Dutton, working both sides of the camera), she ultimately turns Shaw into a real contender, while, for better or worse, managing to turn herself into a minor celebrity in the process.
Donning a carefully honed Cleveland accent and a too-tight/too-short wardrobe, Ryan comes off like a Midwest Erin Brockovich -- which is No Doubt the intent of the producers -- but she and the rest of the cast are forced to slug it out with the kind of trite dialogue that seems to have been lifted straight off of those corporate inspirational posters.
That's just one problem with Edwards' script, which also seems to be saying that, unlike the real Kallen, the movie Kallen isn't allowed to have it all, that as a woman she's unable to get married and have kids if she wants to have a career.
And although Dutton coaxes sturdy performances out of all concerned (including himself), he has difficulty nailing the inherent rhythms of the genre, which would have helped to propel the story to the necessary crowd-pleasing pitch.
Behind-the-scenes support, including the contributions of frequent Clint Eastwood cinematographer Jack N. Green and Spike Lee's longtime costume designer Ruth Carter, are on the money, while the late Michael Kamen furnished the appropriately rousing score.

Boxoffice preview: 'Dates' expecting audience crush
Sony Pictures is sending out a rowdy valentine to weekend moviegoers in the form of the new Adam Sandler-Drew Barrymore romantic comedy 50 First Dates, and the result is likely to be 2004's first boxoffice blowout. The combined luster of Sandler and Barrymore, a super-wide release that will see the movie setting up shop in 3,591 locations and the added benefit of a holiday weekend with Presidents Day on Monday should all conspire to boost Dates with a hefty liftoff. Certainly, the competition is keeping its distance. Sony's rivals are all ceding the frame, and as a result, the following weekend will see an especially crowded field as Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen, Welcome to Mooseport, Against the Ropes and Eurotrip all jostle for attention in the wake of Dates.

Washington, King linking up with 'Charles'
Regina King and Kerry Washington have been cast in Crusader Entertainment's biopic Unchain My Heart: The Ray Charles Story, with Jamie Foxx to star as the legendary musician and Mark Rydell directing. Production begins at the end of March. A domestic distributor is expected to come aboard the project shortly, with Warner Bros. Pictures emerging as a top contender.
