Dave Bautista’s best and most remarkable role after transitioning from his prolific professional wrestling career to one of the most interesting actors in Hollywood’s entertainment industry has been none other than that of Drax in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. A Guardians of the Galaxy member, the actor did an epic job in bringing him to life.
Dave Bautista as Drax the Destoyer. | Credits: The Guardians of the Galaxy Trilogy / Marvel Studios.
However, that character has run its course now – at least for the actor, he has – and it’s time for Bautista to shine in a different role other than Drax the Destroyer now that he has already said yes to returning to the franchise. Thus, here are three characters that would fit the 56-year-old actor if the Russo Brothers decide to bring him back through Avengers: Doomsday.

Scott Adkins has carved himself an impressive niche as a go-to action star, landing roles in franchises such as John Wick, The Expendables, and Universal Soldier. Now, one of his most non-stop brutal movies of the last few years has found its way to the top of the Hulu Top 10. Take Cover was one of several Adkins-led movies released in 2024, and it was also one of his best reviewed of the year.
Directed by Nick McKinless, the British action movie features Alice Eve, Jack Parr, and Madalina Bellariu Ion alongside Adkins. The synopsis of the film reads:
“Scott Adkins has got no cover, no back-up, and no way out in this claustrophobic action thriller. Sam Lorde has spent a lifetime killing people. After a hit gone wrong, he finds himself disillusioned and lacking purpose, deciding to retire as a hitman. His final job however, results in him being a target himself.

Scott Adkins, whose action resume includes John Wick: Chapter 4, Undisputed, The Killer's Game, and many, many more, has landed his next project, and it appears to be a relentlessly brutal western. For such a popular action star, we're surprised Adkins hasn't lent his martial arts skills to the world of six shooting cowboys yet, but Day of Reckoning sounds like the perfect first time.
Per Deadline, Scott Adkins, along with country music star, Trace Adkins (no relation), have joined the cast of Day of Reckoning, which is being produced by Esx Entertainment. The movie is being directed by Shaun Silva (Ride), based on a script penned by Travis J. Opgenorth (Supernatural). Day of Reckoning already features a packed cast that includes Billy Zane, Zack Roerig, and Cara Jade Myers. No release date or window has been revealed for Day of Reckoning. J.J. Perry’s The Killer Game is a test of endurance. It pushes you to the edge with its stultifying low intelligence, plodding derivativeness and plain awfulness. There’s nothing redeeming about the narrative and direction, plunging into the world of assassins: it’s as deathly dull as it is stubbornly uninspired. Not a thought is spared on etching vivid, specific characterization, or detailing motivations. You wonder what made a titan like Ben Kingsley agree to sign up for this. Probably the check was irresistible.
From the very opening, the film gives it away that it’ll just be another generic trainwreck so overconfident it stretches out into almost two hours despite an absolute lack of substance. The writing is flat, characters shorn of layers, friendships and romance cursory and yet deep it gets tricky to reconcile the weight they gather with the impetuousness of their execution. The film is full of foolish,...

Dave Bautista usually manages to draw a crowd for his movies as one of the elite group of wrestling stars to have made the move to Hollywood blockbusters. However, The Killer's Game arrived in 2024 to one of the actors' worst set of reviews, and an equally dismal box office, in recent years, but that hasn’t stopped the film from shooting to the top of the Prime Video global movie chart, even without it being available in the U.S.
Directed by J. J. Perry and written by Rand Ravich and James Coyne, Bautista’s action comedy promised to tick all the boxes that his fans have come to expect. The Killer's Game follows Bautista's hitman, Joe Flood, who orders a hit on himself after being told by a doctor he's suffering from a terminal illness. But, in an unfortunate twist, he discovers he was misdiagnosed, and despite his attempts to call the hit off,...

The film that would become The Killer’s Game has been hanging around for roughly three decades now – the first draft having been penned way back in 1995. While it has, perhaps admirably, finally made its way to the screen, the final result might indicate why it took 30 years to get there: the film is a hodgepodge of hitman clichés, cartoonish ultra-violence, and underwritten character drama that emerges both undercooked and endlessly reheated, a forgettable John Wick knock-off.
It’s not for lack of trying. Eventual director J.J. Perry has assembled an all-star cast for his hitman face-off, across the spectrum of hulking hardmen, dependable action stars, and pure thespian talent. But these pieces never cohere into a satisfying whole – the character work is flatly directed and the visuals often dour and desaturated, clashing awkwardly with the outlandish action and video-gamey roster of colourful assassins. While a mid-movie twist lands well, The Killer’s Game...

Dave Bautista passed on the opportunity to join the Fast & Furious franchise, but had he accepted, we would have gotten a crossover that had been years in the making. Fast & Furious' lively and chaotic universe looked like a great fit for the actor, as Dave Bautista's best action movies suggest he could fit in effortlessly, but he ultimately rejected the chance to join the iconic saga. Having been part of popular franchises like the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Dune, Bautista is no stranger to huge blockbuster action, but he is just as enthusiastic about working with lesser-known IPs.
His performances in The Killer's Game and Knock at the Cabin were both incredibly memorable despite being potential risks. In addition, his work in Glass Onion and Blade Runner 2049 highlighted his versatility, showcasing why he's so in demand. With the holidays over, the box office is expected to see a significant slowdown until the release of “Captain America: Brave New World” in February. But there is some intrigue this weekend with the release of “Den of Thieves: Pantera,” which is the start of Lionsgate’s campaign to turn around their woeful box office fortunes.
From 15 films released last year, Lionsgate grossed a mere $244.7 million at the North American box office, according to data from The Numbers. To put that into perspective, 2024’s highest grossing film, Disney/Pixar’s “Inside Out 2,” made more in its first week in U.S./Canada theaters than the theatrical runs of all of Lionsgate’s 2024 films combined.
The studio was able to end the year on a positive note with Kingdom Story Company’s low-budget family film “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever,” which grossed a decent $40 million. But that wasn’t enough...

Throughout 2024, various different exciting action movies have hit the big screens, but not all of them got their proper due. The best action movies of 2024 have drawn significant attention from audiences in the past year. Filmmaking is constantly evolving, and this year's harvest was huge. It's a privilege to have enough action films in one year to even have subcategories in the action genre like the best war movies of 2024. With such a massive influx of action films this year, it's inevitable that some numerous hidden gems have flown completely under the radar.

Wedding bells are stinging (sorry) in a new action comedy starring Anne Hathaway and Dave Bautista. Jonathan Tropper, who wrote 2014's This is Where I Leave You and The Adam Project in 2022 (and was the creator and showrunner of Banshee) is scripting the new film for Amazon MGM Studios and Agbo. In an exclusive Deadline report, the outlet says that the two stars have signed onto the project and will co-produce with each of their respective companies.
The story is based on a wild series of actual events where two FBI agents played a couple in order to infiltrate a criminal enterprise in, you guessed it, New Jersey. The story is based on a wild series of actual events where two FBI agents played a couple in order to infiltrate a criminal enterprise in, you guessed it, New Jersey. While it sounds like a plan slightly more sophisticated than a free boat giveaway that would nab Homer Simpson,...

Anson Funds Management — an alternative asset manager led by chief investment officer Moez Kassam with activism strategy run by Sagar Gupta — has nabbed a stake in the studio and is now one of the top shareholders of Lionsgate stock, a source confirms to The Hollywood Reporter.
When asked for comment, a Lionsgate rep replied, “We always welcome the ideas and input of our shareholders.” The company declined to comment on how Anson had approached Lionsgate brass or what proposals that leadership may have fielded from the activist investor. Bloomberg first reported Anson’s move.

The studio bosses overseeing Joker 2 and Borderlands have been talking about their respective box office disappointments.
2024 has seen a some big hit movies on the big screen, but also some sizeable swings that didn’t quite pay off. In Warner Bros’ corner, there’s the recent Joker sequel, Joker: Folie A Deux. For Lionsgate meanwhile, it uncharacteristically pumped over $100m into the videogame adaptation Borderlands.
It would be fair to say that neither struck box office gold.
We’re in the part of the financial cycle where bosses do earnings calls to talk through their more recent performance. Warner Bros Discovery boss and movie deleter David Zaslav was up first, in a widely-reported chat where he’s hoped that the results of the US election help allow big businesses to consolidate more.
“Inconsistency also remains an issue at our motion picture studio, as reinforced recently by the disappointing results...

Deadline reports that Scott Adkins (John Wick: Chapter 4) has joined the cast of Rip, Joe Carnahan’s (Narc) upcoming crime thriller for Netflix. The film is set to star Matt Damon (Oppenheimer) and Ben Affleck (The Accountant 2) and follows a “team of Miami cops whose trust begins to fray when they discover millions in cash in a derelict stash house. As outside forces learn about the size of the seizure, everything for the team is called into question — including who they can rely on.“
In the movie, Adkins is set to play Affleck’s brother, and looking at the picture above… I can buy it. There’s definitely a resemblance. The rest of the cast includes Catalina Sandino Moreno (From), Néstor Carbonell (Lost), Sasha Calle (The Flash), Teyana Taylor (A Thousand and One), and Kyle Chandler (Lanterns). In addition to directing Rip, Carnahan also wrote the script.

Borderlands was a genuine bomb. No doubt about it. The adaptation of the acclaimed video game franchise grossed just $33 million in theaters and was absolutely trashed by critics. During a recent earnings call, Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer spoke about the epic failure of Borderlands.
“On Borderlands, nearly everything that could go wrong did go wrong: it sat on the shelf for too long during the pandemic, and reshoots and rising interest rates took it outside the safety zone of our usual strict financial models,” Feltheimer said. With a budget of around $120 million, Borderlands stands to lose the studio a lot of money. Although Lionsgate did mitigate some of the risks by selling foreign rights, sources told Deadline that Borderlands could still lose as much as $30 million. “The success of our financial models doesn’t take the place of also getting the creative right,” Feltheimer added

“Borderlands,” Lionsgate’s star-studded video game adaptation, is standing out as one of the biggest bombs at the box office this year. The film budgeted at $115 million earned just $32.9 million globally, a “disaster” for the studio considering the high hopes the studio had to turn into a franchise based on the game series’ huge popularity.
The performance of the film was so poor, Lionsgate could not ignore it during its earnings for the summer quarter.

When it came to the bombing of Borderlands, among other late summer and fall releases, Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer made no bones about emphasizing culpa nostra.

There's a new Star Wars trilogy in the works. Writer/producer Simon Kinberg (The Killer's Game) has signed on to write and produce a new trio of space operas for Lucasfilm. Deadline reports that Disney's parent, Lucasfilm, has no comment on the news. Mike Fleming Jr. reports that there's conflicting information regarding whether this trilogy of films will serve as episodes ten, eleven, and twelve of the Skywalker Saga that began with George Lucas' Star Wars in 1977, was revisited by Lucas in the late 1990s and early 2000s with the prequel trilogy, and was seemingly concluded with Disney's sequel trilogy in the 2010s; that may be the case, or it may begin an entirely new saga.

J.J. Perry is back in the director's chair with the romantic action comedy The Killer's Game. Perry began his career working on the stunt side of the industry, having worked on everything from the original Mortal Kombat movies in the '90s to the Wesley Snipes-led Blade and Three Kings before working his way up to being a stunt coordinator and second unit director on such hits as Tom Hardy's Warrior to The Fate of the Furious and John Wick: Chapter 2. Perry recently took a major step forward with his directorial debut in the Jamie Foxx-led Day Shift, which garnered mixed-to-positive reviews.

Dave Bautista has become a well-established actor over the course of a 18 year acting career, and his chance to lead The Killer's Game turned out to be a low point in one specific area. The former wrestler got his big break by joining the Marel Cinematic Universe as Drax, and that role gave him more opportunities to join other franchises and standalone projects. The 2024 action movie represented the continued evolution of his career, as it put him back in the lead role of an action movie, one that could launch a new franchise after The Killer's Game's ending.
Bautista is no stranger to being part of franchises and projects that are successful overall. He's been in franchises - Dune, Blade Runner 2049, and Bond, and he started his own franchise with My Spy. He's also made an effort to work with Rian Johnson, M. Night Shyamalan, and other notable directors.

Lionsgate’s genre-spanning 2024 slate of heist comedies, weepy coming-of-age tales, cheeky video game adaptations and horror stories was aiming to fill a void. Most of these were the kinds of movies that major Hollywood studios have either stopped making entirely or largely relegated to streaming services.
And yet, instead of packing seats at multiplexes due to pent-up demand, everything from director Eli Roth’s irreverent console-to-screen adventure “Borderlands” ($32 million globally), the “Crow” reboot ($23.7 million) and historical crime drama “1992” ($2.9 million) to Halle Berry’s post-apocalyptic horror story “Never Let Go” ($16.2 million), Dave Bautista-led action-comedy “The Killer’s Game” ($5.9 million), Francis Ford Coppola’s sci-fi epic “Megalopolis” ($11.2 million) and “Wonder” prequel “White Bird” ($6.8 million) has sputtered at the box office. That’s a string of seven consecutive flops — each with paltry single-digit debuts — in the nine weeks between early August and mid-October.

Quick Links Lionsgate Has Had 13 Flops or Underperformances in 2024 What Does This Mean for Lionsgate?
Lionsgate cannot catch a break this year. While several studios have continued to struggle at the box office in the post-covid landscape, Lionsgate, the home of beloved franchises like John Wick, The Hunger Games, and Saw, has had an uncharacteristically poor 2024, and it's had a massive effect on their box office haul.
Hollywood mythology is filled with tales of studios going bankrupt after a single failed project. Battlefield Earth flat-lined Franchise Pictures, New Line Cinema couldn't recover after The Golden Compass, and even It's a Wonderful Life forced Liberty Films to be bought out by Paramount Pictures. But what happens when a studio has 13 financial duds in a single year? If you've spent more than five minutes among online movie fan circles, you undoubtedly know about Megalopolis, The Crow, and Borderlands having horrendous box office...

Despite the disgraced former president’s laundry list of felony convictions, additional charges, and innumerable policy failures, some misogynists gravitate towards his unapologetic cruelty, viewing it as strength.
It’s time for a reality check.
And Dave Bautista, who is both an actor and a retired professional wrestler, is here to deliver it.
For Jimmy Kimmel Live, actor and retired professional wrestler Dave Bautista tore into disgraced former president Donald Trump’s attempts at projecting a “strong” and “masculine” image by administering a dose of reality. (Image Credit: ABC) Dave Bautista was a natural choice to diss Donald Trump
After Jimmy Kimmel noted how some men in recent polls claim to perceived the disgraced former president as a “strong, alpha man,” he introduced a skit of Dave Bautista.

Update: This past week, it was being said by sources close to Ballerina that John Wick director, Chad Stahelski, reshot most of the film without the original director, Len Wiseman. The production is now saying those claims are inaccurate. According to them (who contacted us directly), director Len Wiseman led the additional photography on set in Budapest with producer Chad Stahelski there to help in the creation of action design on the new scenes that would enhance the film and create bigger action sequences. As per usual procedure on films, Ballerina‘s reshoots were not out of the ordinary, and the process had taken place in less than a month.
According to our source, Chad Stahelski’s involvement in building upon key action sequences was important to Wiseman; Stahelski has been an enormous champion of Wiseman from the onset of pre-production and Wiseman is equally appreciative of Stahelski’s support...

Fans of The Hunger Games are surely getting excited as details about the next entry in the franchise have been unveiled. Earlier this year, it was announced that author Suzanne Collins was developing a new book in The Hunger Games franchise that would also be adapted into a film. Titled Sunrise on the Reaping, it was previously announced that the book would center on Haymitch, one of the few winners from District 12 who mentored Katniss and Peeta in the original series and was played by Woody Harrelson in the films.
The Hunger Games publisher Scholastic, via The Hollywood Reporter, revealed the official synopsis for Sunrise on the Reaping. The story is set 24 years before The Hunger Games and takes place during the 50th Hunger Games, the Second Quarter Quell, which Haymitch goes on to win. The novel will be released on March 18, 2025, five years after the publication of the previous Hunger Games novel,...

While much attention in the box office world has been on the catastrophic launch of Warner’s “Joker: Folie a Deux,” another new release this past weekend, “White Bird,” has deepened a two-month slump in theaters for distributor Lionsgate.
Beginning with the Eli Roth’s panned video game adaptation “Borderlands” in early August, the last six films from Lionsgate released in over 1,000 theaters each have grossed less than $50 million in the U.S. and Canada and have largely been critical busts. The other films include the actioner “The Killer’s Game” starring Dave Bautista, the horror title “Never Let Go” starring Halle Berry, the long-gestating remake of “The Crow” starring Bill Skarsgård and Francis Ford Coppola’s critically polarizing and audience alienating “Megalopolis.”
Lionsgate’s “White Bird,” a sequel to the inspirational film “Wonder” that hit $315 million worldwide for Lionsgate in 2017, opened last weekend in 1,018 theaters and grossed just $1.58 million. By comparison,...

“The Killer’s Game” is an action movie starring Dave Bautista with Sofia Boutella, Terry Crews, and Ben Kingsley. It is directed by J.J. Perry.
Are you looking for a film you can watch countless times and always find something new to enjoy, as if it’s the first time? Are you searching for a movie that delivers a life-changing message? Well, keep searching, because “The Killer’s Game” won’t change your life, nor does it contain any profound message. Instead, it’s packed with car chases, fistfights, sword duels, gunfights, jokes, leaps, brawls, and gags galore that will, undoubtedly, brighten your day.
This film is neither original nor groundbreaking, but it’s an absolute delight to sit back, relax, and enjoy this parody of countless action movies. While it lacks originality, it manages to be entertaining, vibrant, and action-filled.

Number two film of the summer “Deadpool & Wolverine” (Disney), held back from any home viewing until after its tenth weekend in theaters, took the #1 spot on both iTunes (ranking by transactions) and Fandango (by revenue). But perhaps only for a brief stay.
“Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” (Warner Bros.), a major hit though not quite in the same league as the Marvel sequel ($235 million U.S./Canada gross so far versus $634 million; both films still in the top 10) will likely replace it when released Tuesday on PVOD after its fifth weekend. That feels a little early (32 days), more so since Tim Burton’s sequel is still #3, with over $10 million.
But if anything, it appears PVOD release boosts theatrical play as of late, at least in the short term. In any event, with the opening weekend debacle of “Joker: Folie à Deux” (revised downward to $37.8 million), it will provide some immediate cash to the Burbank studio.
