Spoilers for "Creature Commandos" to follow.
The opening credits of "Creature Commandos" is a roll-call of the offbeat cast set to classic Venezuelan song "Moliendo Café." The last figure in the call is series creator, and new DC Universe architect, James Gunn. The animated Gunn is sitting at his laptop, writing the script for the "Creature Commandos" episode we're about to see. If you thought Gunn would be hands off with the show, think again. The series has his thumbprint over each key frame of animation and syllable of dialogue.
So far, "Creature Commandos" has the pop music needle drops that Gunn has been writing his superhero movies to since "Guardians of the Galaxy." The series' second episode, "The Tourmaline Necklace," shows the century long history between Frankenstein (David Harbour) and his Bride (Indira Varma) with a montage set to Gogol Bordello's "American Wedding.

Sony had been planning to give director Chris Weitz’s horror film They Listen a theatrical release on August 25th of 2023, but in May of last year they decided to delay the release an entire year, pushing They Listen to August 30, 2024. By the time that date rolled around, the movie had been given the new title Afraid (or AfrAId)… and neither the new title nor the new release date worked out for the movie at the box office, because it only ended up making $9 million at the global box office. Just two weeks after its theatrical release, Afraid has now been given a digital release and is available for rent on Amazon’s Prime Video for $9.99. It can also be purchased for the price of $14.99.

After 25 years, Jason Biggs took advantage of one of his most memorable roles for some tongue-in-cheek marketing.
The American Pie star, who hosts Netflix‘s Blue Ribbon Baking Championship, joked “there were no pies harmed” while filming the backing competition series, which is “safe for family viewing” and now available on the streamer.
“I’ve really wanted to host something in the food world,” Biggs told USA Today. “Of course, there’s the wink at the camera and the audience with me as a baking show host. And whenever I can’t think of something to say, I always have a pie joke in my back pocket that brings the house down.”
The show’s premiere comes after last month’s milestone anniversary of his breakout role in American Pie (1999), which has long been known for its eponymous scene, in which Biggs’ bumbling teen character Jim fornicates with an apple pie.

The American Pie franchise has had a lasting impact due to its cast, originality, and memorable moments, making it the quintessential teen comedy. The best way to watch all the American Pie movies is either by release date or chronological order, simplifying the decision-making process. American Pie and American Pie 2 are the most successful entries in terms of box office gross, while American Wedding had the lowest earnings and weakest group dynamic.
Whether in chronological order or by release date, all nine American Pie movies in the franchise are sure to give viewers a good laugh. While the teen comedy genre has faded, American Pie left a strong impression on audiences mainly because of its cast, originality, and ridiculously memorable moments. Even though other teen comedies, like Not Another Teen Movie, She's All That, and Get Over It, have their supporters, American Pie reigns supreme as the quintessential teen comedy franchise.

Alyson Hannigan Fondly Remembers Her Role In American Pie(Photo Credit –Instagram)
Following the 25th anniversary of the first 1999 American Pie movie, Alyson Hannigan made a stunning revelation about her role as the lovable band nerd Michelle Flaherty and how she nearly missed out on the sequels.
During an interview with Vulture, Hannigan added, “The best story from the whole thing was that you know, it was a low-budget movie with all these tiers of negotiations. There was an A-tier and a B-tier. I think I was on the bottom C-tier with Seann [William Scott].”
She continued, “I was like, ‘Okay, fine.’ It was seven days and it was more of a passion project. Then, in the contract, there was a sequel clause. I said, ‘Look, I’m getting paid scale plus 10. I’m not going to sign for a sequel. That doesn’t make sense.’ I sound like I was being really difficult,...

One time, Alyson Hannigan almost missed the bus back to band camp.
Ahead of the 1999 teen movie’s 25th anniversary, the American Pie actress reminisced about her role as lovable band nerd Michelle Flaherty in the raunchy franchise and how she almost wasn’t in the sequels.

She explained that the tiers were “in regards to pay,” adding: “So it’s just scale plus 10 [percent to an agent]. There’s no negotiating on the C-tier because the character is not that important.
“I was like, ‘Okay, fine.’ It was seven days and it was more of a passion project. Then, in the contract, there was a sequel clause,” Hannigan continued.

Ever since the dawn of epic movie trilogies such as Star Wars, Back to the Future, and Indiana Jones, trilogies have been a major part of the film industry. At this point in the medium's history, planned sequels are extremely common, especially in the case of adaptations of serial novels like Harry Potter or The Hunger Games, the latter of which ranks as one of the best movie quadrilogies of all time.
Movie series stay culturally relevant for a longer period than single-movie narratives. However, not every movie series is able to keep a quality standard throughout its installments, and in the case of quadrilogies, this task is especially difficult. That said, some franchises have been lucky enough to produce four great films, solidifying them as some of the greatest stories in film history.

In a 2022 interview for Variety, actor, writer, and director Christopher Guest said, “When I met (Jennifer Coolidge), I knew there was something going on that was special. And I was right, fortunately.” He praised her ability to command attention without commanding the dialogue. “This person stands out. Everyone else to me is invisible. You want to see her.”
We have seen her on our television and theater screens since the early 90s. And 2023 may have been her best year yet.
So, what happened to Jennifer Coolidge, the self-deprecating eccentric humorist and sometimes sex symbol, who owns over 100 credits in television and film? To know that, we must do what we always do: start at the beginning where the beginning began.

The 1999 coming-of-age comedy "American Pie" was a massive hit when it was released in 1999. Starring a who's-who of upcoming teen talent, "American Pie" delved deeply into the more embarrassing sexual details of being an adolescent boy in the modern day. There were scenes involving bodily fluids, oral sex, and multiple references to creative masturbation. While the bulk of the film -- written by Mike Herz and directed by Paul Weisz -- prided itself on aggressive raunchiness, it wisely ended on a sweet note, allowing the characters to realize that despite having had sex, they still have a lot to look forward to on their journey of growing up.
For a while in the early 2000s, Jason Biggs, Alyson Hannigan, Mena Suvari, Shannon Elizabeth, Seann William Scott, Thomas Ian Nicholas, and Natasha Lyonne were household names largely because of the "American Pie" movies. To date, the series has made $990 million.

Rumors of a fifth American Pie movie have persisted since 2012, with the potential for a storyline centered around Jim's dad and Stifler's mom. Jennifer Coolidge's recent comeback, thanks to her role in The White Lotus, makes a Stifler's mom story in American Pie 5 even more appealing.
American Pie 5 has been rumored to be in development for years, and the best idea for it is now perfect thanks to the big comeback of one of its cast members. In 1999, the sex comedy American Pie made way for one of the most controversial yet profitable franchises in the comedy genre. American Pie introduced viewers to Jim Levenstein (Jason Biggs), an awkward high school senior who made a pact with his friends to lose their virginity by high school graduation. American Pie’s success made way for a franchise with spin-offs and three sequels, the latter continuing Jim’s story.

The screenwriter of American Reunion teases a possible storyline for American Pie 5. The potential storyline would explore whether or not the romantic relationship between Jim's dad and Stifler's mom worked out. No American Pie 5 is currently in the works, though a sixth spinoff is in development.
A possible storyline for American Pie 5 has been teased by a screenwriter of American Reunion. The American Pie movies, which began in 1999, form a teen sex comedy franchise that follows the lives of best friends Jim (Jason Biggs), Kevin (Thomas Ian Nicholas), Finch (Eddie Kaye Thomas), and Oz (Chris Klein), as well as their crude, hard-partying acquaintance Stifler (Seann William Scott) and their various love interests. Although five direct-to-dvd spinoffs were also made, the main branch of the franchise includes just four movies: the original, 2001's American Pie 2, 2003's American Wedding, and 2012's American Reunion.

In an industry where astronomical movie budgets and multi-million dollar actor salaries are common, it might come as a shock to some when a film's breakout star is handed a rather paltry sum. This was precisely the situation for Seann William Scott, the actor who rose to stardom portraying the memorable character Stifler in the 1999 teen comedy, American Pie.
Recently on The Rich Eisen Show, Scott provided an insight into his initial experiences in the movie world, particularly emphasizing the meager pay he took home from a blockbuster that garnered a massive $235.5 million against a modest $11 million budget. This teen laugh-riot didn't just secure its spot as the year's 17th highest earner; it went on to overshadow recognized titles like Inspector Gadget and the award-winning Shakespeare in Love. Nonetheless, the bounty Scott pocketed from this success was unexpectedly limited.

Seann William Scott confirms he was paid only $8,000 for his role in American Pie. He used most of his paycheck to buy a used Thunderbird, but doesn't remember what happened to the rest of the money. Scott had to work at the LA Zoo as a "churro guy" before the movie came out.
American Pie star Seann William Scott opened up about how little he was paid to appear in the teen comedy. American Pie was a smash hit in 1999, earning $235.5 million off a budget of $11 million and becoming the 17th highest-grossing movie of the year, ahead of Inspector Gadget and Best Picture winner Shakespeare in Love. Chris Klein's character Oz was not in American Wedding because he wasn't invited to return to the franchise - a decision made "above his pay grade." Other characters like Heather (Mena Suvari), Vicky (Tara Reid), and Jessica (Natasha Lyonne) were also missing from American Wedding due to creative decisions and story constraints. The absence of key characters, including Oz, in American Wedding weakened the group dynamic and led to jokes that fell flat, making it the weakest film in the franchise.
The third movie in the American Pie franchise, American Wedding, reunited the main group for Jim and Michelle’s wedding, except for a couple of characters that played big roles in the first movies – so, why wasn't Oz in American Wedding along with many other cast members? American Pie co-stars Jennifer Coolidge and Eddie Kaye Thomas spent some time as roommates, but life did not imitate art, as the relationship stayed platonic. That's what Coolidge says in a new interview with British GQ, recalling how she once roomed with Thomas after the two had met on the set of American Pie. She says the two lived together in Los Angeles in the early 2000s, but while the characters they played may have gotten intimate in the fictional world of American Pie, the two dated separately when they were roommates.

Sony had been planning to give director Chris Weitz’s horror film They Listen a theatrical release on August 25th of this year, which is why we have it listed on our Summer Horror Movie Preview… but we’re going to have to remove it from that list, because Sony has (according to Yahoo) decided to delay the release an entire year. They Listen is now set to reach theatres on August 30, 2024.
They Listen is coming to us from Sony, Blumhouse, and Depth of Field. Weitz is producing the film with Jason Blum and Andrew Miano. Bea Sequeira, Dan Balgoyen, Britta Rowings, and Paul Davis serve as executive producers. Filming was already underway in Los Angeles back in December, so this movie is going to be complete and sitting on a shelf a while before its new release date rolls around next year.
All details about They Listen are being kept under wraps.

As is to be expected when it comes to this project, details on the characters the new cast members will be playing are being kept under wraps.
In fact, all details about They Listen are being kept under wraps. We don’t even have any idea what the story is about. So we have to gauge our interest in this one based entirely on the names of the people involved with the making of it.
They Listen is coming to us from Sony, Blumhouse, and Depth of Field.

After Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn teamed up to pioneer the R-rated bromantic comedy as a viable blockbuster genre, there were many movies like Wedding Crashers that followed. Wedding Crashers revolves around immature bachelors John Beckwith (Wilson) and Jeremy Grey (Vaughn) who infiltrate weddings they weren’t invited to in order to pick up women. Despite their best efforts to avoid settling down, by the end of the movie, they’ve both found true love in meaningful relationships. Along with the works of Judd Apatow and Kevin Smith, Wedding Crashers helped to create a new subgenre of comedy that subverts the audience’s expectations of its raunchy humor with a surprisingly sweet message.
When it was released in 2005, Wedding Crashers was a sleeper hit. It was met with favorable reviews from critics and grossed more than $288 million worldwide (via Box Office Mojo). Wedding Crashers arrived at a time when public...

January Jones took aim at virtual auditions on Saturday, writing on her Instagram story, “Note to Hollywood: It’s time for casting directors to come back into the office like everyone else. To audition actors in person.”
The “Mad Men” star continued, “And if anyone asks for a Fee to audition please know that this is criminal and Pathetic. I personally have had to self tape several times since the pandemic began and there is zero benefit to it for anyone involved. It’s time consuming, expensive, and a drag to whomever you have to drag in to read with you (sorry Mom), and is often done with zero direction/notes.”
Since the pandemic, self-tapes have remained a common way for actors to audition for roles, rather than auditioning live in front of casting directors.

Havana Rose Liu recently had her breakthrough role playing the lead in the Hulu thriller No Exit (read our review Here) – which was an okay movie, but underwhelming in comparison to the awesome Taylor Adams novel it was based on. American Pie actor Shannon Elizabeth, who played Nadia, explains why she told her friends that the 1999 comedy movie would be terrible. Directed and co-produced by Paul Weitz, American Pie follows four high school boys, played by Jason Biggs, Chris Klein, Thomas Ian Nicholas, and Eddie Kay Thomas, who enter into an agreement to all lose their virginity before their graduation. The movie went on to earn over 235 million at the box office, kickstarting a franchise that now features 9 movies in total, including various spinoffs.
In a recent interview on Inside of You With Michael Rosenbaum, Elizabeth reveals that she initially thought American Pie would be awful because of changes in post-production she was forced to make regarding her accent.
Elizabeth was asked to change her accent numerous times during the Adr (automated dialogue replacement) stage of post-production, causing her to lose faith in the film and her role. Check out...

Jennifer Coolidge has revealed that she is willing to return in future American Pie movies in her own inimitable way. One of her early roles was an appearance in the original 1999 sex comedy American Pie, directed by Chris and Paul Weitz. She played the mother of Seann William Scott's rambunctious cad Steve Stifler, a woman whose appearance inspired the popularization of the term "Milf" and who eventually slept with her son's friend Finch (Eddie Kaye Thomas). She would return to the role three times in each of the film's official sequels: 2001's American Pie 2, 2003's American Wedding, and 2012's American Reunion.
Last night, NBC aired The 80th Golden Globes, where Coolidge won a trophy for her supporting role on the HBO series The White Lotus.
During her acceptance speech, Coolidge thanked the people who kept her career alive with "cute little jobs" over the years, including Legally Blonde...

Chris Weitz went uncredited on his feature directorial debut American Pie, which he directed alongside his brother Paul Weitz, but since then he has earned directing credits on Down to Earth, About a Boy, The Golden Compass, The Twilight Saga: New Moon, A Better Life, and Operation Finale. He dealt with some horror elements in the Twilight movie, but now Deadline reports that he is going all-in on horror with his new film They Listen. They also report that Katherine Waterston (Alien: Covenant) and John Cho (Searching) have signed on to star in the film.
This makes They Listen a continuation of a working relationship between Weitz and Cho that stretches all the way back to American Pie. Weitz has only directed Cho in two movies previously, American Pie and Down to Earth, but Weitz was a producer on American Pie 2, American Wedding, American Reunion, See This Movie, In Good Company,...

Just when you thought you'd sung the words, "Bye, bye, Miss American Pie," for the last time, Universal Pictures is ready to reheat the pie and kindly offer you some more. And you better like it because this is a multimillion-dollar film franchise and it's too expensive to pie you in the face with it. According to The Hollywood Reporter, a new "American Pie" movie is in the oven, based on an original pitch that is said to offer a "fresh take" on the 23-year-old sex comedy film series.
Sujata Day, known for her roles in Issa Rae and Larry Wilmore's HBO series, "Insecure," as well as Rae's web series "The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl," is the up-and-coming filmmaker behind this new "American Pie" pitch. There are no specific details available yet for what the plot or angle of the pitch is, but Day is known for her...

Avril Lavigne is celebrating the 20th anniversary of her debut album, Let Go, with a new deluxe edition — out today — featuring six bonus tracks.
One of the additions to the album is Lavigne’s newly recorded version of “Breakaway,” a song she originally wrote for Let Go, but ultimately ditched (she gave the song to Kelly Clarkson, whose version became a hit in 2004). For the new version of “Breakaway,” Lavigne restored some of the original lyrics, which reference her childhood in Canada. (A lyric video for “Breakaway’ is available on Facebook.

American Pie star Tara Reid has teased a fifth sequel to the hugely popular teen comedy franchise, confirming that a script for American Pie 5 is ready. While there have been a whole host of spin-offs branching off from the 1999 original, it has now been close to a decade since audiences last caught up with the American Pie gang. However, according to Reid, fans may not have to wait too much longer.
"It might happen... okay, I can't tell you when, because I don't really know when, because we have to get all the actors and at the same time to get our schedules together. There is a script out there. I'll put it that way."

Abramorama has acquired U.S. distribution rights to Soros, the Jesse Dylan-directed documentary feature about billionaire activist George Soros from Vital Pictures. The film, which had its U.S. premiere at the Telluride Film Festival, will get a live streaming premiere on November 18 on the film’s website followed by a release on Watch Now @ Home starting on November 20th. Famous for betting against the Bank of England in 1992 and making a billion dollars in one day, Soros is maligned by ideologues on both the left and the right for daring to tackle the world’s problems and putting his money behind his fight – from free elections and freedom of the press to civil rights for minorities.

I did a double take when I saw the headline myself. Despite only launching a week ago, a not inconsiderable number of titles will be leaving HBO Max at the end of June. Logically, distribution contracts that were already running out weren’t going to stop running out just because Warner launched their new service, so you best get on these quick.
Here’s the list of all the movies leaving HBO Max on June 30th:
The Abyss
Akeelah and the Bee
American Wedding
An Ideal Husband
Arthur

The Beverly Hillbillies

Fred Willard, the comic actor known for his genial but dunderheaded characters, has died. He was 86.
Willard died Friday night at his home in Los Angeles of natural causes. Willard’s daughter, Hope Mulbarger, said the actor died “very peacefully.”

Willard was married for 50 years to Mary Willard, a playwright and collaborator with her husband. She died in 2018 at the age of 71.

Well here we are. April is going to be a fairly sedentary and isolating month for a lot of people. At least we now thankfully have some guidance as to our entertainment options as HBO has released its new streaming releases for April 2020.
HBO’s original series premieres are pretty busy this month. The fourth season of Issa Rae’s excellent comedy Insecure arrives on April 12. That’s preceded by the fascinating docuseries Atlanta’s Missing and Murdered: The Lost Children and followed by book adaptation I Know This Much is True.
On the film side of things there are a few exciting options. Good Boys arrives on April 4, It: Chapter Two on April 11, and Stuber on April 18. Some older movies arriving on April 1 are Team America: World Police, Die Hard, and Slumdog Millionaire.
Here is everything else coming to HBO Now and HBO Go in April 2020 via HBO PR.

Looking at the cast photo posted to Hannigan's Twitter account, it appears that the American Pie gang hasn't aged a day over the past twenty years.
In the Et reunion interview, the cast members shared their memories of working on the classic movie and how it continues to affect their lives to this day. In particular, Alyson Hannigan brought up her often-quoted line her character says in the movie, which begins, "This one time, at band camp..." Even still, fans regularly say this to the actress,...

February is here, which means Valentine’s Day is around the corner. Hulu is offering traditional fare (think Kleenex and chocolates) like the Sandra Bullock-led rom-com “While You Were Sleeping,” as well as “Four Weddings and a Funeral,” “Moonstruck,” and “Barefoot.”
Why stop at romantic relationships though? Celebrate Galentine’s Day, the Feb. 13 “holiday” popularized by “Parks and Recreation,” which honors women and female friendship. Check out the thrilling “Thelma & Louise” or “Lara Croft: Tomb Raider,” and for campy reality TV fun, watch women fight and make up on “The Real Housewives of New York City.”
Hulu has also brought out a spate of James Bond films, so get yourself a martini and marathon “Dr. No,” “From Russia With Love,” and “Thunderball,” all the way up to “Tomorrow Never Dies.”
Additionally, recent critically acclaimed movies available on the platform this month include the dark comedy western “The Sisters Brothers,...

Movies New to Netflix in February: ‘Velvet Buzzsaw’ & ‘High Flying Bird’ Premiere, Plus Every ‘Jaws’
Netflix is having a very good start to 2019. In addition to landing its first Best Picture nomination for Alfonso Cuarón’s “Roma,” (the film tied with “The Favourite” for most nominations — 10), the streaming service took another step towards industry legitimacy by officially joining the MPAA this week. The site’s original film slate continues to broaden and diversify, and the streamer seems to pull an infinite number of rabbits out of its expertly-branded red hat.
As the Sundance Film Festival kicks off this week, the Jake Gyllenhaal vehicle “Velvet Buzzsaw” will play in the Premieres section. But Netflix viewers won’t be missing out for too long; the art heist genre thriller debuts on Netflix on the first day of February. That might make a nice double feature with the Kristen Stewart-starring “Personal Shopper,” or Matt Tyrnauer’s impeccably made disco doc “Studio 54.”

Buckle up for some lowbrow hijinks involving people in their 40s, because American Pie 5 is happening. That is, if Tara Reid is to be believed. The studio hasn't come out and declared that another movie in the very successful comedy series is indeed coming down the pipeline, but Reid says that not only is the movie happening, but that it could be shooting before year's end.
During a recent interview with Spanish language site CinePop, Tara Reid, who is gearing up for an appearance in Sharknado 6, was asked about another possible romp with Stifler, Jim and the gang. According to the 42-year-old actress, she met with American Reunion directors Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg recently and they fully intend to make the fifth movie happen. Here's what she had to say about it.
