Miley Cyrus doesn’t make an appearance in the video for her latest release “Prelude” until the final minute. For the first 90 seconds of the visual she directed with Jacob Bixenman and Brendan Walter, the focus is locked on her voice as she delivers a spoken-word soliloquy. Consider the curtain raised on Something Beautiful, the 13-track pop opera Cyrus will release on May 30. According to YouTube, the official video for “Something Beautiful” will follow “Prelude” at 12 p.m. Est on March 31.

DarkGame, the latest thriller about dark doings on the Dark Web, opens with the masked figure known as The Presenter overseeing the murder of a bound woman in a manner chosen by the highest bidder. By the way, he chooses a chainsaw as the instrument of her demise. That’s followed by Detectives Ben Jacobs and Cathy Burnette rescuing two missing children from traffickers.
Ben has barely gotten home to his pregnant wife however when they’re called back into the station. The woman we saw killed in the opening scene had vanished without a trace a couple of weeks earlier. The footage is the only clue they have as to who is responsible, but the people behind it know how to cover their tracks.

Dario Argento Panico takes its title from an old interview where he said he didn’t want to create a sense of fear in viewers, he wanted to go beyond it and leave them in a state of panic. Its form is also taken from its subject’s past, following him as he isolates himself in a hotel to finish his latest script, something he frequently did early in his career.
I’m not sure that you really can isolate yourself with a film crew looking over your shoulder, but director Simone Scafidi uses this to frame his questions for the interview portions of the film. No one envies the biographer to a truly great writer. But in “Dario Argento Panico,” director Simone Scafidi takes on a task even more daunting — profiling one of the best filmmakers to ever live in his own medium.
The two artists, forever bonded by an appreciation for the 83-year-old Italian’s otherworldly filmography, take turns illuminating the mystery behind giallo masterworks like “Deep Red” and “Suspiria” (1977) in Shudder’s essential and ethereal portrait. Astounding archival footage and insightful new interviews pay taut homage to Argento’s exacting style and near-impenetrable public persona, allowing the still-working cinematic legend to vivisect his life and legacy as others do the same. The result is an accessible yet effervescent retrospective on the auteur who has become synonymous with chiaroscuro nightmares: a tightly constructed character study that will initiate unfamiliar viewers with a thorough and thought-provoking primer, while simultaneously giving lifelong fans a better understanding...

“Tonight we have special news for you: we closed all the exits. You can’t escape,” Claudio Simonetti deadpanned in his Italian accent to the enthusiastic crowd at the Somerville Theatre in Somerville, Massachusetts on October 3. Clad in something like a ringmaster jacket over a Deadpool T-shirt, a smile beamed across the maestro’s face.
The audience erupted into laughter chased by cheers, as they knew they were about to experience something special: the 1985 cult classic Demons on the big screen with a live score performed by Claudio Simonetti’s Goblin, a modern tribute to the prolific Italian prog-rock composers Goblin fronted by the founding keyboardist.
Produced by Italian master of horror Dario Argento — for whom Goblin had previously composed several scores — Demons is directed by Lamberto Bava from a script written by Bava, Argento, Dardano Sacchetti (The Beyond), and Franco Ferrini (Phenomena). The plot finds attendees at a mysterious...

The Italian maestro is back! Yes, Dario Argento, one of Italian cinema’s great horror filmmakers has stepped back behind the camera for Occhiali Neri (Black Glasses), the director’s first movie since 2012’s much-ridiculed Dracula 3D, which is actually based on a script he wrote with Franco Ferrini that was shelved in 2002 when the films original production company, Cecchi Gori, filed for bankruptcy.
Black Glasses sees Rome under siege from a serial killer who has strangled three prostitutes with cello rope. His latest victim is destined to be Diana, a luxury escort who frequents the hotels of Via Veneto. One night, the maniac chases her in his white van and rams her, sending her crashing into another car containing a Chinese family and the young son Chin.

If your dad was Mario Bava, master of light and originator of the giallo film as we know it, you’d have a hard time following in his footsteps too; yet that is precisely what Lamberto Bava chose to do. He made some good ones right out of the gate: Macabre (1980) and A Blade in the Dark (’83) have their fans, but it was the fantastic Demons (’85) that brought him international attention. One lackluster sequel later and he was more or less relegated to the sidelines, where he found solace in Italian TV; he signed a four picture deal for a series of films under the umbrella High Tension, and the first one out of the gate was The Prince of Terror (’88), which was deemed too gruesome and shelved until 1999. I can understand why, because it does contain several gory set pieces, implied rape, and strong language. Oh, and it’s also insane and entertainingly weird.

The Argento Syndrome – In Stores Now! Star-Filled Signing Event Announced!
A retrospective of Italian auteur Dario Argento, The Argento Syndrome is an examination of a career marked by such genre classics as The Bird with the Crystal Plumage, Suspiria, Deep Red, Tenebrae and Opera. The Argento Syndrome is part academic study, with essays on every film, and part personal memoir, detailing the author’s time in Italy on a trip to visit the set of Non Ho Sonno. Dario Argento is an Italian film director who specialises in the peculiarly Italian sub genre – The Giallo. His first film – The Bird With the Crystal Plumage – was a massive hit in Italy and set down the blueprint for directors working within the Giallo sub field. Often copied by other Italian directors, he has never been bettered. Even greater than the Master Mario Bava, Argento’s work is so stylish and brave in its experimentalism, it cannot be beaten. Dario Argento Is Giallo.
Unfortunately Argento has somewhat lost his way in recent years. The Card Player (1994) received mixed reviews and seemed to be too mainstream for Italian Giallo fans. His film Giallo was released in 2009 but flopped at the box office. One can only pray for a return to form but when he was good, he was in a league of his own and produced legendary Gialli which have thrilled fans of the subgenre for decades.

Although I happen to love several of Dario Argento’s earlier films, the legendary director’s latest batch have been somewhat underwhelming. In fact, “The Card Player” ranks as one of the worst movies I’ve ever seen, and when you take into account the large amount of crap I cram into my brain on a regular basis, that’s pretty astounding. Below you’ll find a handful of images from Argento’s “Dracula 3D”, a motion picture that really didn’t need to be made. Does anyone really want to see Dario’s take on this well-worn literary character? I’m sure some of you are out there, which is the only reason this article exists. I’ll probably end up watching it at some point just to satisfy my curiosity, but I’m not expecting very much at all. For the complete gallery, stop by the film’s...

It's thus far the most comprehensive film we have to address where we stand in the world of media, and thank God for the invaluable David Carr, a shut-up-and-listen voice of reason who defends the fundamentals amidst legions of people blindly barrelling toward an all-digital climate of media without merit. It’s another jam-packed week of DVD and Blu-ray releases, here’s the rundown of what’s available to buy from today, May 2nd 2011.
The Green Hornet (DVD/Blu-ray)
Britt Reid (Seth Rogen) is a slacker by day, party animal by night… until he finds a serious career that’s seriously cool: crime-fighting action hero. As the Green Hornet, he teams up with gadget wiz and martial arts master Kato (Jay Chou) to take down La’s underworld. Even Britt’s assistant Lenore (Cameron Diaz), doesn’t suspect this mismatched pair is the masked duo busting the city’s toughest thugs led by Chudnofsky (Academy Award winner Christoph Waltz, 2010, Supporting Actor, Inglourious Basterds). With style, swagger and an arsenal of awesome gear, the Green Hornet and Kato are doing justice their way, making every mission a mix of over-the-top action and outrageous comedy. Review.

When renowned horror journalist, author and broadcaster Alan Jones met Dario Argento for the first time in 1982 on Tenebrae he had no idea he would become a permanent fixture in Dario’s life, visiting all his subsequent film sets and writing the best-selling book ‘Profondo Argento’ about his career and the enigma he still presents to the world. As Alan says:
I promised Dario on the day we met that I would always make sure his fans were kept reliably informed on his movies and future plans. It’s a duty I have solidly adhered to and one I know his legion of fans have appreciated. Hosting the Argento season on The Horror Channel is yet another part of that commitment I made to bring his unique work to the attention of the widest possible audience.

Both Alan Jones and Dario Argento are cool dudes. Jones is a critic I've always admired and Argento is a director I've adored since my first viewing of Suspiria. So if you fancy a slice of the old master's works Alan Jones is presenting a mini season of the later period films on The Horror Channel next month.
The Stendhal Syndrome, Sleepless and The Card Player are the movies selected. The Stendhal Syndrome is perhaps the last classic of Argento's. It's a brilliant and lurid movie and deserves some respect! Read the press release below and then do yourself a favour next month and watch these flicks!

Dario Argento’s later forays into the lurid world of the giallo is being released on DVD by Arrow Video on 2nd May under the title of Neo Giallo Collection. So if you want to revisit the likes of Terror At The Opera, Sleepless, The Stendhal Syndrome and The Card Player, this collection of “neo-giallo” is for you.
The Stendhal Syndrome, in particular, is one of the master’s most underrated features. Below is the full press release along with all the extra features on each disc. A very cool bunch of films indeed.

What a great turn of events if Hobo With a Shotgun proved to be a career resuscitation for Rutger Hauer. Though he has worked steadily for the last few years, his last really high-profile roles were in 2005, in Sin City and Batman Begins. But Hobo With a Shotgun gave him some new life at festivals, and he had a notable role in The Rite. Now the latest film to bring him into the fold is Dario Argento's Dracula 3D, in which the actor will reportedly play Van Helsing. Granted, it has been years since Dario Argento made a film worth watching (maybe The Card Player in 2004) and far longer since he made a really good film. (Let's call that Opera in 1987.) Factor in yet another take on Dracula and the fact of it being 3D, and Rutger Hauer is looking like the only good aspect so far. But I...

Coming off the Grindhouse-hyped Hobo With a Shotgun (acquired by Magnolia Pictures out of Sundance), Rutger Hauer is all of a sudden a hot commodity. According to Italian press, the star of Blade Runner and The Hitcher has landed the role of Van Helsing in Dario Argento's forthcoming Dracula 3D! Shooting is scheduled to begin this May. While Argento is one of the greatest horror directors to ever walk the Earth, his latest have been nothing short of disappointing. Here's hoping that his Bram Stoker adaptation is better than Giallo, Mother of Tears and The Card Player. Watch an interview with Argento inside.

Last month we reported on the legal battle going on between actor Adrien Brody and the makers of Giallo, Dario Argento’s 2008 movie which starred the American actor and Emmanuelle Seigner (read about it here). Brody has been a bit miffed recently claiming he wasn’t paid for his work and has successfully stopped the movie from its DVD release because he’s got a clause in his contract forbidding his image from being used. Always handy.
The actor deferred his wages at the time of production and was told by the producers that he’d be paid afterwards but the money never turned up. He’s owed $640,000 dollars and he wants his cash! A judge waggled his wig and agreed with Brody.

Way back in May this year we were excited by news Dario Argento was making a Dracula adaptation – in 3D! While he hasn’t made a truly decent film since The Stendhal Syndrome in 1996, so this could be a worthy project. The least said about Mother of Tears, the better.
This interview/promo trailer has been kicking around since early October but it’s good for fans to here the maestro’s thoughts on what he’ll be doing when filming starts in March next year. His very first sentence talks about Dracula being ‘sentimental’. Interesting take!

One of Arrow Video's great success stories is the championing of Dario Argento's work on home video in the UK. I know what some of you may be thinking, and perhaps championing Argento isn't exactly controversial position to defend, but no one had really taken up the challenge of rescuing many of these Argento features in Britain from BBFC cut purgatory. Many of Argento's features have been sliced and diced by the BBFC, and for the most part, home video distributors have made do with the cuts in order to have a marketable product. Arrow Video, however has taken some of these very same films, including their recent Blu-ray/DVD release of Inferno, back to the BBFC for reclassification, and they won! They are currently awaiting a decision on Deep Red (Profondo Rosso), which has yet to be seen completely uncut in most areas of the world. This is...

The Card Player is an innovative, modern day thriller highlighted by a dazzling set-piece set around a breathtaking ‘cat and mouse’ chase between Anna and the film's eponymous killer.
Considered by many to be a remarkable return to vintage form for the Italian master of suspense and terror,...

From deep red to grey velvet, the cinema of Dario Argento drips with pungent pigmentation. Vivid color is deployed for texture and sensuality. The primary hues of Suspiria’s Tans Academy pulsate with a primal femininity. The densely filtered light in Inferno creates a heady dreamscape saturated with dangerous allure. And then there’s the fluid crimson, often held in sharp relief against white walls, reflective glass or pale flesh. Why anyone would want to sequelize the abysmal remake of The Amityville Horror (review) is beyond me, but at least it seems like those in charge are taking a page from the endless sequels to the original film and going the route of ridiculousness.
Bloody Disgusting learned today that MGM is looking to create a new chapter in the Amityville saga, one that will instantly ensure that the film is forever dated; they want a story focused on the internet and multimedia. Because if there’s one thing we all know works so well in horror, it’s films that have to do with the internet. Who can forget the classic terrors of Fear Dot Com, The Card Player or Cry Wolf?
Considering past Amityville sequels have dealt with haunted dollhouses, clocks and mirrors, I guess a haunted interwebs might be a step up ... but hopefully this project will fade...
