Four and a half years ago, Sony’s Columbia Pictures announced that they were developing a reboot / reimagining of the 1997 “nature run amok” thriller Anaconda (watch it Here), with the intention of “taking what was a simple and relatively cheap programmer with a B-movie concept and event-izing it in scope and budget.” Back in 2023, we heard that Tom Gormican would be writing and directing the film as his follow-up to the well-received action comedy The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent. In recent months, Gormican’s Anaconda reboot, which takes a meta approach, has been making its way through production with a cast that includes Jack Black (School of Rock), Paul Rudd (Ant-Man), Thandiwe Newton (Westworld), Daniela Melchior (The Suicide Squad), Steve Zahn (Joy Ride), Selton Mello (Bury Your Dead), and Ione Skye (Zodiac). Rudd has described the film as a “totally unique” meta comedy – but in a new interview, Black said that,...

The reaction from fans to the casting of Jack Black as major Minecraft player, Steve, have been somewhat mixed (even more so since the School of Rock star tragically turned his back on fellow Tenacious D member and long-time friend Kyle Gass recently), with many left wondering if he would have been better suited as a different character. Well, that was indeed almost the case, as A Minecraft Movie initially had Black playing a “talking pig.”
Discussing the upcoming video game adaptation with Variety, Torfi Frans Ólafsson, Mojang’s senior director of original content, revealed more details about how Jack Black ended up playing Steve, one of the original “skins” introduced when the game first emerged. Director Jared Hess, who had worked with Black before on the 2006 comedy Nacho Libre, was eager to reunite with the actor, and while his casting as Steve has been divisive among fans (he looks.

2007's Superbad is one of the best comedies of the 2000s. Almost twenty years have passed since its release, and it remains a bold approach to the teen comedy genre that often broke the rules of what was allowed to be shown on screen or not. Superbad has enough in it to make it a risqué comedy, but distributing studio Sony Pictures didn't have an issue with the edgy plot. No, according to writer and star Seth Rogen, their most important note was that Jonah Hill's character could not use the PlayStation that's featured in the film.
Rogen, who co-wrote Superbad with Evan Goldberg when they were teenagers, was at the SXSW festival, where he spoke to Rotten Tomatoes about his starring role in Apple TV+'s latest series, The Studio. In the show, he plays Matt Remick, the head of a production studio who attempts to save the...

It's safe to say that The White Lotus is one of the biggest television series in recent memory. Following the lives, and deaths, of guests and staff alike at five-star resorts around the world, The White Lotus has become appointment television. Part of the allure is thanks to its brilliant creator and director, Mike White. The genius behind the series has a plethora of credits to his name, which may be your entry point to his body of work. For example, not only did he star as Ned Schneebly in School of Rock, he also wrote it. For reality television fans, Mike White first rose to prominence across two seasons of The Amazing Race, running around the world with his dad. But years later, Mike White returned to competition reality TV with an appearance on Survivor: David vs Goliath.

In the spring of 2018, Hollywood writer and director Mike White — then known for penning movies like "School of Rock" and creating shows like "Enlightened" — did something surprising: he competed on the CBS reality TV show "Survivor" during its 37th season. Titled "David vs. Goliath," the season pitted underdogs, the Davids, against social and physical heavyweights, the Goliaths; White, an original Goliath, made it to the end of the game but ultimately lost out to former David player Nick Wilson.
Still, "Survivor" was the gift that kept on giving for White. Not only is he now close personal friends with longtime "Survivor" host Jeff Probst — who once said he would happily make White a producer on the reality competition show and said he sometimes asks him for input on seasons and challenges — but the concept of a bunch of strangers trying to survive in a tropical paradise undoubtedly inspired White's award-winning anthology series "The White Lotus.

Few filmmakers have as varied a CV as Richard Linklater’s. From the box office hit School of Rock to his experiments with rotoscope, he is indefatigably curious and surprisingly consistent — with style and substance. This time around, he is testing himself with a chamber piece: a drama set almost entirely in one room and focused on a single character. The setting is the upscale New York bar Sardi’s on the night in 1943 when Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Oklahoma! is having its triumphant premiere; the character is American lyricist Lorenz Hart.
Before Rodgers and Hammerstein, there was Rodgers and Hart. They’d met when Rodgers was still in high school, going on to write a slew of hit musicals including such well-known songs as “My Funny Valentine,” “Isn’t it Romantic” and the enduring “Blue Moon.” Ethan Hawke, Linklater’s friend and frequent collaborator, somehow manages to shrink himself to fit the agitated,...

Hit Man, starring Glen Powell, Adria Arjona, Rhetta, and Austin Amelio, wowed fans when it was released on Netflix. Based on a true story, the movie was full of adventure, romance, and humor — making it almost a perfect flick. And, on Valentine's Day, you want to find a movie that meets the needs of everyone involved and this is exactly what you may be looking for.
Hit Man tells the story of Gary Johnson, a university professor who moonlights with the New Orleans Police Department as a would-be hitman. He takes on an undercover job and poses as an assassin-for-hire, a decision that leads to unexpected consequences.
Directed by Richard Linklater, Hit Man is a movie that capitalizes on Powell's charisma while incorporating a successful chemistry between the star and his love interest in the movie, Arjona. Hit Man isn't your average romantic comedy, but that's what makes it...

2003’s School of Rock compiled a great group of child actors as they not only were able to go toe-to-toe with Jack Black in their comedic performances, but they also really came together as a band for the film. The bond that the cast made was evident as the audience could also feel their synergy. However, for two particular castmates, their bond would blossom into true love. Two of the movie’s child stars, Caitlin Hale and Angelo Massagli, would recently step on stage again, this time in holy matrimony.
Hale played Marta in School of Rock, who was one of the backup singers, while Massagli played Frankie, who became more of a crew member for the band. The two grew up to tie the knot and Entertainment Weekly reports on another cast member — Rivkah Reyes, who portrayed the bassist Katie — documenting parts of the wedding on a TikTok video.

The hangout movie is one of the most underrated genres of film, spanning back decades. To quote visionary and legendary modern filmmaker Quentin Tarantino, when discussing the Howard Hawks film Rio Bravo in a private screening at the Cannes Film Festival in 2007, hangout movies, "are certain movies that you hang out with the characters so much that they actually become your friends. And that’s a really rare quality to have in a film…because it actually takes that long of a time to get past a movie character where you actually feel that you know the person and you like them…when it’s over, they’re your friends.”
The modern master of the hangout movie is almost certainly Richard Linklater, whose varied filmography includes comedy classics like School of Rock, Oscar winners like Boyhood and romantic comedies like Hit Man. One of his best films of all time,...

While the world is mostly full of nightmares, and looking at any website or social media app that contains the news these days feels a little like cracking open the Ark of the Covenant, there is at least one good thing happening on the planet: two of the former child stars from Richard Linklater’s School of Rock just got married.
The 2003 comedy, of course, tells the story of Dewey Finn (played by Jack Black) an out of work rocker who lies his way into a substitute teacher job at an elite private school, and convinces the kids to secretly form a band with him.
Apart from the fact that Black’s character probably should have been thrown in jail and Sarah Silverman’s supposedly villainous character was 100 percent in the right, School of Rock is a delightful film that mostly holds up today. If you watch those kids playing...

Chimes! But this time, they are not from the song "Legend of The Rent." They are the chimes of wedding bells as two of the castmates of director Richard Linklater and writer Mike White's beloved comedy School Of Rock got married recently. Caitlin Hale and Angelo Massagli, who played students of Horace Green Prep, wed in a ceremony at a hotel in New Jersey. Seeing the now-grown private school rockers marry is both heartwarming and bone-chilling as a stunning reminder of Father Time's unhindered march.
While the young newbie actors shine in School of Rock, the film is still one of Jack Black's finest performances to this day. Black plays Dewey Finn, a jilted band member who, after being kicked out of his group, poses as his roommate (Mike White) who substitute teaches at a local grade school. As they previously told Inside Edition, they reconnected years after the movie, when Hale moved to Florida, where Massagli was living at the time. They began dating and eventually got engaged.

Pop star Ronan Keating sang that life is a rollercoaster, and he wasn't lying -- but how does one get through the rough troughs to rise back up to the highest peaks? It's a complicated answer, but cinema holds the magical quality to turn any sad day around; all it takes is picking out one of the best feel-good movies and savoring the moment. In some instances, these motion pictures aren't considered the greatest films of all time -- except for "Paddington" because that little bear makes Daniel Day-Lewis look like Jamie Kennedy in comparison and deserves a lifetime supply of marmalade for his contributions to the arts -- but they know how to hit the right spot. Sort of like a warm toasted sandwich at any meal.
What's remarkable about these films is their rewatchability factor. No matter when or why, there's never a bad time to see them...

The extensive Paramount+ movie library continues to expand with a selection of high-quality cinematic classics from the iconic studio as well as some of its more recent hit movies to kick off the new year. A lot of attention these days is paid to Paramount+'s incredible success on the television side of things, thanks largely to Taylor Sheridan's wide collection of shows, including Landman, Lioness, and the recently wrapped Yellowstone. However, January 2025 once again proves there is a terrific selection of movies on the platform to watch.
Unlike some of the other big platforms like Netflix and Apple TV+, Paramount+ doesn't put a lot of focus on original movies, with last month's Dear Santa being one of the only big releases from the platform in 2024. Composer and impresario Andrew Lloyd Webber is one of the most well-known names in musical theater and, thanks to some notable movie adaptations, he's also known in film circles as well. The London-born Andrew Lloyd Webber began his career collaborating on the Oliver!-inspired musical The Likes of Us with Tim Rice. That musical ended up failing to gain a backer and, after some more attempts to get something off the ground, he finally was able to produce Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, the musical that would launch him into stardom.
Since then, Webber has helped fund and create songs for some of the most recognizable musicals ever, including Jesus Christ Superstar, Cats, The Phantom of the Opera (1986), The Wizard of Oz (2011), and School of Rock (2015). He's won one Academy Award and been nominated three times, gone 3 for 15 at the Grammys, won a Golden Globe, and won 6 Tonys out of 23 nominations.

Sony Pictures (with some help from the film's leading men) have announced a Christmas 2025 release date for their upcoming Anaconda reboot, which may officially be titled The Anaconda.
Fan-favorites Jack Black (Kung Fu Panda 4; Tropic Thunder; School of Rock) and Paul Rudd ( Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania; Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire; Avengers: Endgame) have been enlisted to headline the feature, with Daniela Melchior (Fast X; Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3; The Suicide Squad) co-starring. Tom Gormican (The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent; That Awkward Moment) is directing the feature, with a screenplay he co-wrote with Kevin Etten (Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F; The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent).
In the short video, Black teases, “There’s gonna be a big fucking snake, and it’s gonna rip,” while Rudd adds, “You want to get scared? You want to laugh? You want to celebrate with your friends?...

Before she starred in movies, Brec Bassinger first made a splash as the cheerleader-turned-football player Bella Dawson of Bella and the Bulldogs on Nickelodeon, and later won over audiences as the eponymous hero of the tragically canceled CW hit Stargirl. This time, Bressinger takes a leading role in the dramatized true-crime horror-thriller, The Man In the White Van, directed by Warren Skeels and also starring Madison Wolfe, Sean Astin and Ali Larter. During the 1970s in rural Florida, the most that teenage sisters Annie (Wolfe) and Magaret (Bassinger) have to worry about are their prospective love interests, not angering their traditional parents, and butting heads over the younger Annie's brazen, hot-blooded tomboyishness and Margaret's desire to be prim, ladylike and socially acceptable.
But when a mysterious and ominous white van begins to appear around their home, stalking Annie, both sisters are forced to set aside their differences to save each other's lives.

Characters are an immeasurably important part of the films they populate, and oftentimes, great writing can turn characters who are objectively terrible people into lovable parts of their stories. Some of the best movies of all time have characters such as these, equal parts charming as they are dastardly. However, most of all, these characters have managed to stay memorable, even if some of them were created decades ago.
In stark contrast to the best heroes in films or even the greatest best friend duos in movies, characters who are bad people may have even more qualities that make them both real and relatable. Their negative qualities have become a part of their legacy, even if viewers have begun to forget about them over time. Yet characters like Tinkerbell and Jack Sparrow are still terrible people, even if they are generally beloved by their audiences.

Have you seen "The Holiday?" If you are my wife, the answer to this question is, "Yes, probably about 423 times." I have seen "The Holiday" almost as much, simply as a result of living with a woman who turns this Christmas movie on whenever it gets a bit chilly outside. In that sense, the film is absolutely deserving of its spot on /Film's list of the most rewatchable Christmas movies, even while it manages to send a tinge of despair throughout my body as soon as I hear the opening credits.
But it turns out I am not the only long suffering husband to have been trapped in an endless time loop wherein Kate Winslet and Cameron Diaz are seemingly doomed to swap lives and fall in love for eternity. "The Holiday" is currently dominating the Prime Video charts, as wives across the world plunge their husbands into this festive nightmare scape.

The newest Jack Black movie sees the actor returning to an unexpected genre after nearly two full decades. Black, who had his breakout role in the 2000 John Cusack movie High Fidelity, is best known as an actor in a wide variety of comedy movies including Shallow Hal, School of Rock, Tropic Thunder, and Kung Fu Panda. While he has appeared in movies consistently throughout his career, he experienced a major resurgence when he starred in the two most recent Jumanji movies opposite Dwayne Johnson, Karen Gillan, and Kevin Hart.
In the past five years since his appearance in Jumanji: The Next Level, Black's output has included a variety of well-known titles. This includes the animated feature The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which grossed over $1 billion, and the fourth Kung Fu Panda movie, which is the sixth highest-grossing movie of the year worldwide at the time of writing. His upcoming projects...

Paramount+'s newest Christmas movie Dear Santa flips the usual understanding of Santa on its head. When Liam writes his letter to Santa and addresses it to the North Pole, his spelling error ensures the letter ends up with the devil instead. When Dear Santa's Satan arrives, Liam is startled by his appearance but proceeds to befriend him anyway, believing him to be the real Santa. What follows is a chaotic but fun Christmas movie with some lovable characters.
Dear Santa's premise is lovably silly and lighthearted, and the cast holds the movie up with their fitting and funny performances. The unique new Christmas movie will certainly be a hit both with families and older viewers looking for a fun, easy watch. Along with some new faces, Dear Santa also includes several well-known comedic actors who help ensure that the movie will be a hit with audiences of all ages.

Jack Black is best known for playing larger-than-life characters in comedy movies, which may not be surprising, as his favorite movie is a dark comedy about an eclectic mix of unusual characters. Jack Black has had a varied career, beginning as a child actor before branching into music with his band, Tenacious D. Black has become an established actor over the past decade, appearing in a more varied range of movies, including standout roles in King Kong and The Holiday. That said, even Jack Black's underrated movies tend to feature his signature zany and exaggerated comedy.
Jack Black's career began with small roles on TV shows like The X-Files, but he quickly rose to fame by playing slightly immature but comedic characters. Still, these were not the roles he connected to, with Black preferring characters with more emotional depth. Jack Black's best roles are the ones that give him a lot of freedom,...

The American director on the 20-year project he is just beginning, how hitmen don’t exist in real life and why his career would not be possible today
The American director Richard Linklater has one of the great, eclectic film-making CVs: from classics such as Dazed and Confused to School of Rock, Before Sunrise to Boyhood, which was filmed with the same cast over 12 years. That versatility is seen again in his latest movie, Hit Man, released earlier this year to critical and audience acclaim and now on Netflix. A rare foray for him into the comedy-thriller genre, it tells the trueish story of a nondescript college professor (an excellent Glen Powell) who has a side hustle as an undercover operative for the New Orleans police, pretending to be different hitmen in order to elicit arrests. Next year he releases Nouvelle Vague, shot entirely in French. Linklater is 64 and lives in Austin,...

Jack Black's efforts to get a particular song into School of Rock helped solidify its soundtrack as one of the best ever made. In the film, Black plays Dewey Finn, a struggling musician who takes a job as a substitute teacher and turns the school's band into a rock band. School of Rock has a lasting legacy and is an unexpectedly heartwarming story, as the children grow in confidence. The movie has held up so well that Jack Black wants to make School of Rock 2, which would certainly feature a rock soundtrack.
Jack Black is also a musician, so he understands why many bands want to have some control over where their songs are used. One of the greatest rock bands of all time, Led Zeppelin, is famously picky over where their songs are played, and Black went to great lengths to persuade Led Zeppelin to let him use...

Jumanji 4 is confirmed for release in 2026, which could be a blessing in disguise for two of its lead actors. The rebooted movie franchise stars The Rock and Jack Black, with Kevin Hart and Karen Gillan. Jumanji: The Next Level was a huge success, earning $800 million at the box office, and though it is not an immediate sequel to the original, the Jumanji movie timeline is straightforward. The team behind the Jumanji movie franchise has already made some smart decisions that have helped to introduce Jumanji to a new audience, and this delay could be one of them.
The rebooted franchise's videogame plot allowed the cast of Jumanji to show off a wider range of skills than some viewers might expect. The core premise involves the main cast playing avatars for awkward teenage characters and later, their much older relatives. The cast of Jumanji: The Next Level had an even more challenging job,...

Tenacious D's career took an unexpected turn in 2024 following a highly publicized incident during an Australian tour, which resulted in a public statement from Jack Black. Jack Black's Satan gets in the Christmas spirit in the first look at the new Farrelly Brothers' comedy, Dear Santa. Paramount+ has also released a short teaser trailer, as well as a release date, for the upcoming movie.
Entertainment Weekly has debuted several images from Dear Santa, offering fans their best look yet at the comedy movie that reunites filmmakers Bobby and Peter Farrelly for the first time since Dumb and Dumber To. Dear Santa follows "young Liam Turner (Star Wars: Skeleton Crew's Robert Timothy Smith), who still believes in Santa. To prove to all of his disbelieving friends that Santa is real, he writes a letter to the big guy inviting him to show himself. The only problem? Liam isn't a very strong speller and addresses the letter to Satan (Black) instead. Satan, who never gets letters from kids, is flattered and goes to meet Liam," reads EW's synopsis.

The conductor of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’s crazy train on Saturday night was actor Jack Black, who had the honor of inducting Ozzy Osbourne into the institution with a speech that was predictably reverent and hilarious.
In addition to celebrating the music of Osbourne’s first band, Black Sabbath, Black has long championed Osbourne’s solo career, performing “Crazy Train” as a member of Tenacious D and “Mr. Crowley” with Tom Morello’s son, Roman. In fact, he’s been a fan of Osbourne’s for most of his life.

The heyday of the Disney Channel Original Movie is unfortunately well in the past. Throughout the late '90s and early '00s, the Disney Channel would put out original movies almost monthly, and they were treated like a must-attend event for tweens everywhere. When things started to feel like they were dying down in the mid-aughts, the Dcom got a shot of adrenaline in 2006 with the success of "High School Musical." Suddenly, the Disney Channel became the home of squeaky-clean phenomenons, and the Disney Machine started cranking out superstars like Miley Cyrus, Zac Efron, Hilary Duff, Selena Gomez, and Zendaya.
There were most certainly Disney figures before and after this period to reach crossover success as adults (Shia LeBeouf and Olivia Holt for example), but the window of the Disney Channel's peak popularity and cultural relevance has certainly splintered thanks to the advent of the internet and the launch of Disney+.
