Paramount comedy The Lost City will now open wide three weeks earlier than expected, the studio announced today, as its release date moves from April 15 to March 25, 2022.
Pic was previously set to open against Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, the third installment in Warner Bros.’ Fantastic Beasts franchise, based on the book by Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling. The weekend of the 25th, however, is otherwise unoccupied.
The Paramount feature (formerly titled The Lost City of D) follows a reclusive romance novelist (Sandra Bullock) on a book tour with her cover model (Channing Tatum), watching as the pair get swept up in a kidnapping attempt that lands them in a cutthroat jungle adventure. It’s said to be in the vein of Robert Zemeckis’ classic Romancing the Stone, starring Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner.

In what has been heavily expected in the wake of Jim Gianopulos’ departure from Paramount as CEO and Chairman, the studio’s Motion Picture President Emma Watts is leaving the Melrose lot. Deadline has confirmed the news.
Watts has been in the position since July 20, 2020, and rejoined with her former Fox Boss Gianopulos to rebuild Paramount in the wake of dwindling Transformers’ and Star Trek box office revenues and expensive plays from the Brad Grey and Rob Moore era at the studio. The fruits of her labor will be realized next year on the 2022 release calendar, God willing they all remain on the big screen.
Watts’ departure comes at a time when ViacomCBS is pivoting to putting reportedly putting more of its movies on streaming service, Paramount+. Nickelodeon chief Brian Robbins was put in charge by ViacomCBS Chairman Sheri Redstone to take on Gianopulos’ duties and catapult the media conglom into the Ott age.

Daniella Garcia has been cast in the upcoming ABC series “Rebel” in a recurring role, Variety has learned exclusively.
The series stars as Katey Sagal as Annie “Rebel” Bello, a blue-collar legal advocate without a law degree. She’s described as a funny, messy, brilliant and fearless woman who cares desperately about the causes she fights for and the people she loves. When Rebel applies herself to a fight she believes in, she will win at almost any cost.
Garcia will star as Maddie, who is eight months pregnant with a complicated pregnancy. She is Helen’s daughter, and is understandably terrified that her mother’s defective heart valve will kill her before the baby is even born.
Garcia was most recently seen in the Gus Van Sant Amazon film “Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far on Foot.” Her other film roles include “The Lost City,” “At Middleton,” “Free Ride,...

Ryan Reynolds is slowly but surely making his way through the thirteen movies he had on his upcoming slate just a few months ago, but he might have added another one after entering talks to reteam with Sandra Bullock for action-packed romance The Lost City of D.
The Croods: A New Age already hit theaters in November, while Free Guy was given a new release date in May and The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard is set for next August. The 44 year-old also recently wrapped Netflix blockbuster Red Notice and is currently hard at work on The Adam Project for the streaming service, while Deadpool 3 finally gained some momentum by hiring a pair of writers in the Molyneux sisters.
Admittedly, that still leaves family fantasy Everyday Parenting Tips, comedy Upstate, the Clue reboot, a musical version of A Christmas Carol and video game adaptation Dragon’s Lair, along with rumored sequels for 6 Underground,...

They don’t make ’em like this any more, and the original TV spots for James Gray’s accurate retelling of history almost didn’t know how to sell it. Charlie Hunnam spends his life trying to solve a riddle of the Peruvian rainforest, in between fighting in WW1 and dealing with class prejudice. Yup, one could say the picture was filmed in a ‘classic’ style . . . can a show like that find an audience these days?

Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, as well as other cool events and things to check out.
Will This April Dump Weekend See Any New Movie Open Over $10 Million?
After the decent opening of last week’s The Fate of the Furious--though not quite as much as I predicted--it’s going to be hard for any new movie to make a mark against its second weekend even if it drops 55% or more this weekend, which is very likely.
Probably the best bet to make money this weekend is the thriller Unforgettable (Warner Bros.), which pits Kathryn Heigl against Rosario Dawson and is the directorial debut by producer Denise Di Novi (Crazy, Stupid, Love). It also stars Geoff Stults as the ex-husband of Heigl’s character Tessa, who becomes engaged to Dawson’s Julia, making her the stepmom to the former’s daughter,...

Read even just a couple of interviews with him and you’ll realize that James Gray — in his humor, candor, self-effacement, knowledge, and general kindness — is better at the process than almost anybody else. So I’d experienced twice over, and now a third time on the occasion of his latest picture, The Lost City of Z. Although I liked the film a whole lot upon seeing it at last year’s Nyff and found it a rich source of questions, our conversation proved too casual and genial to be intruded about with a query about sound mixing — which I, of course, just knew I’d ask before entering a hotel room and sitting at a tiny table, complementary chocolate cake between us, and realizing that my muse then and there was instead a question about Steven Soderbergh’s Twitter account.

“The Lost City of Z” director James Gray has never shot a movie with a digital camera, and he’s not planning on trying it anytime soon. He certainly resisted it for his new film, the epic story of British explorer Percy Fawcett’s search for a lost civilization in the Amazon jungle.
The movie, based on the 2009 bestselling book of the same name by David Grann, stars Charlie Hunnam as Fawcett, Sienna Miller as his wife Nina, and Robert Pattinson as Henry Costin, a British corporal who joins Fawcett on his search for an indigenous society. Tom Holland (“Captain America: Civil War”) plays Fawcett’s son Jack, who also joins his father on the expedition to South America.

Just a few minutes ago, news broke that the 54th New York Film Festival will play host to a big time unveiling of a major Academy Award contender. Yes, Nyff will be where Ang Lee’s next movie, Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk, will have its World Premiere. The 54th installment of this fest has already announced a trio of premieres, opening with The 13th, hitting its midpoint with 20th Century Women, and closing with The Lost City of Z, so this is very much like an added bonus. At the same time, it’s now easily the most high profile flick screening and an Oscar hopeful title worth paying a great deal of attention to. For those wondering, the film is an adaptation of the well regarded novel of the same name by Ben Fountain. Set mostly during Thanksgiving Day, it follows the title character Billy Lynn (newcomer...

After Sons Of Anarchy wrapped, Charlie Hunnam went from Prince Hamlet stand-in to King Arthur portrayer for Guy Ritchie. Along with playing that legendary warrior and ruler, Hunnam’s recently wrapped James Gray’s The Lost City Of Z, which is still slated for release later this year. Between replacing Benedict Cumberbatch in The Lost City and helping give King Arthur a flashy makeover, it’s understandable that Hunnam would have very little time to consider a return trip to the Pacific Rim movies, which have had a little trouble becoming a franchise.
But the stop-and-start fraught sequel is now reportedly, finally underway at Legendary, though without Guillermo del Toro at the helm. (“Where’s the fun in that?” we all mutter.) Unfortunately, all his royal and explorer duties have left Hunnam without any time to step back into a Jaeger for more rock ’em, sock ’em action. While promoting...

Let's get one thing straight before we begin. Bill Murray is the King. There are better actors. There are people who have better filmographies. There are even funnier people, although not many. But Bill Murray is, all things, considered, the King. I've dedicated much of the last 45 years working this out scientifically, and I am prepared to finally share the findings with you, free of charge, right here at HitFix. Ostensibly, we're doing this because of this weekend's release of "Rock The Kasbah," but that's just an excuse. "Did you know that Bill Murray doesn't have an agent? He just has an 800 number and answering machine." I remember exactly where I was when I heard about how Murray manages his career, just like some people remember when they first heard about Keith Richards snorting his dead dad's ashes. It's one of the best pieces of Bill Murray folklore, right up there with how he's always crashing house parties. But it hasn't helped his work much. Just look at his recent filmography. If you forget about his work with Wes Anderson and flukes like Get Low and Zombieland, it's been a pretty dire stretch since 2005's Broken Flowers — The Lost City, Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties, City of Ember, The Limits of Control, Passion Play, Hyde Park on the Hudson, A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III, The Monuments Men, and his latest, the treacly dramedy St. Vincent,...

Andy Garcia Finds Love At Middleton
By
Alex Simon
Since making a splash as crack shot George Stone in Brian De Palma’s The Untouchables, Andy Garcia has become one of the cinema’s most prolific and diverse actors. The Cuban-born Garcia boasts over 100 credits on his resume, with roles ranging from actor, director, producer and musical performer. At Middleton, which arrived on DVD and Blu-ray April 1 from Anchor Bay Entertainment, features Garcia as a slightly befuddled doctor who finds an unexpected love connection with another parent (Vera Farmiga) while accompanying their kids on a tour of a tony East Coast college. Andy Garcia spoke with us recently about this and other career highlights. Here’s what transpired:
I don’t think I’ve ever seen you play a guy who’s not cool, so it was a pleasant surprise to see you in At Middleton, which marks a change of pace.

Alfonso Cuaron and his son Jonas are still basking in the warm glow of Gravity's success, but Hollywood is a fickle town -- and if you don't start lining up new projects while you're hot, you could easily become yesterday's news. As such, we've got the latest inside scoop on the father-son duo's upcoming projects. Variety reports that Jonas Cuaron is now attached to Warner Bros.' The Lost City. We don't know much about the plot details of the film, but it is set in the lost underwater city of Atlantis. Warner Bros. is reportedly excited to reteam with the younger Cuaron on this feature, as are we. Warners has high hopes for this feature, and had even reportedly approached Peter Jackson about directing at one point. Whether the older Cuaron...

With the the success of Alfonso Cuaron’s Gravity, comes the announcement that its screenwriter- and Cuaron’s son- has been tapped to write The Lost City. Jonas Cuaron has long been the frontrunner for the gig, but Warner Bros is fast-tracking the project based on the commercial and critical success of Gravity. While plot details are currently under wraps, its said that the film will take place in the mythical underwater kingdom of Atlantis.
Variety reports that production will begin as soon as Cuaron finishes his next directing assignment, Desierto, which stars Gael Garcia Bernal in a Manhunter-style plot set along the Mexican border.
Peter Jackson was once approached to direct The Lost City, which goes to show you how highly WB considers this project. Akiva Goldsman will produce through his Weed Road Pictures shingle, alongside Torry Tunnell and Joby Harold at Safehouse Pictures.

Gravity writer Jonas Cuaron has been hired by Warner Bros. to write a new film based on the legend of Atlantis called The Lost City. There are really no plot details to share with you yet, but according to Variety, the film would be a new take on the mythical underwater kingdom. There's no word on who will direct the film yet, but the studio wants to start production on it next year. Cuaron is a very talented writer, and I'm looking forward to seeing what comes of this production.

Jonas Cuarón, co-writer of this fall’s out-of-this-world success story Gravity, has inked a deal with Warner Brothers to pen the script for their long-in-development Atlantis property, The Lost City. Rumored to once have Peter Jackson circling the project, The Lost City has become a priority project for the studio now that Cuarón is on board to provide the screenplay for this decidedly earth-bound (albeit underwater) tale.
Produced by Akiva Goldsman (along with Torry Tunnell and Joby Harold from Safehouse Pictures), the storyline for The Lost City is being kept under wraps, with the studio stating simply that the film will be “a new take on the mythical underwater kingdom.”
After seeing what a stellar job Cuarón did on Gravity, his attachment to this project must inject it with instant fanboy credibility and bode well for its success. It also practically guarantees that the film will be infused with both grace and unrelenting thrills,...

After enjoying massive critical and commercial success with his screenplay about people lost in outer space, Jonas Cuaron—who co-wrote Gravity with his father, Alfonso—will draft another movie for Warner Bros. about people lost in the ocean, known in scientific circles as “the outer space of water.” Cuaron has been brought aboard The Lost City, a project Variety describes as a “new take on the mythical underwater kingdom” of Atlantis that’s been explored in movies nearly since the advent of cinema, but probably never with two beautiful movie stars just sort of floating through it. Can Jonas Cuarón do for the sea what he did for space? That's what Warner Bros. is hoping as they've tapped the "Gravity" co-writer for an equally ambitious project. Cuarón will take his pen to "The Lost City," a project that will be "a new take on the mythical underwater kingdom" of Atlantis. That has been a hot property around the WB lot, with Peter Jackson apparently eyeing it at one point, and it seems Cuarón is the guy they trust to get it moving. He'll have to work out a few things as he starts directing "Desierto" with Gael García Bernal next year, but it looks like Cuarón and WB are figuring out a way to make everyone happy. Warner Bros. is teaming up with Gravity screenwriter Jonás Cuarón for The Lost City, which centers on the mythical city of Atlantis.
Plot details are being kept under wraps, but the project is said to approach the fabled underwater city from a completely different angle. The writer was always the studio's top choice to draft the screenplay, although scheduling issues had to be worked out with his directorial debut, Desierto, which stars Gael García Bernal and starts shooting next year.
No director has been attached yet, but the project is such a high priority at the studio that Peter Jackson considered taking on the project, although that scenario never came to fruition.
Akiva Goldsman is producing through his Weed Road Productions company, alongside Safehouse Pictures' Tory Tunnell and Joby Harold.

It’s probably safe to say that after Gravity, Jonás Cuarón can do whatever he wants. And apparently, what he wants to do next is travel to the lost city of Atlantis and do a little filmmaking with the undersea set. The Gravity screenwriter will be writing The Lost City for Warner Bros., which will be (according to Variety, who broke the story) a “new take” on the fabled sunken city. Those two words are the only plot details we have for now, so The Lost City could essentially be anything, so long as it’s at least marginally related to people who live under the sea. Cuarón’s got a busy slate for now – he’s directing Desierto next, a thriller starring Gael García Bernal about two illegal immigrants who cross paths with a violent and unstable American vigilante who’s taken it upon himself to patrol the border. Two actresses, Millie Perkins (Anne) and Diane Baker (her sister Margot), made their movie debuts in this renowned film.
The director of “The Diary of Anne Frank,” the celebrated George Stevens, led a nationwide search for the lead teenage actress to portray Anne, after Audrey Hepburn, Natalie Wood and Susan Strasberg (Anne in the original play) passed on the role. The film won Academy Awards for Best Supporting Actress (Shelley Winters), Best Art Direction and Best Cinematography, and was also nominated for Best Picture and Best Director.
