Netflix's latest movie, Ad Vitam, includes a small ensemble of talented French actors. Directed by Rodolphe Lauga, the Netflix international movie is currently the number one non-English film on the streaming platform. Ad Vitam follows Franck, a former member of the elite French tactical police, the Gign, as he is forced to delve into his past after his pregnant wife is kidnapped. While Ad Vitam uses a similar plotline that several films in the genre employ, it sets itself apart with its action and incredible performances from its cast.
Since most of the actors in Ad Vitam are French, they might not be familiar to an American audience, but they've featured in several French movies and TV Shows. The Netflix action movie is engaging from start to finish, with an intense storyline that makes audiences root for the primary protagonist. Although there's a lot to like about Ad Vitam,...

Smoking Causes Coughing is ostensibly a riff on Power Rangers/Super Sentai, Ultraman, and other tokusatsu-style media in which spandex-clad superheroes battle intergalactic monsters, but — as is the case with writer-director Quentin Dupieux’s entire filmography — his latest genre-bending slice of French absurdity is predictably unpredictable.

The new “Charlie’s Angels” reboot was no match for a local romantic comedy or a 20-year-old Giuseppe Tornatore film at the Chinese box office, bringing in just $7.6 million in its debut weekend, according to figures from consultancy Artisan Gateway.
Directed by Elizabeth Banks and starring Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott and Ella Balinska, the film has had a lackluster start, with China’s day-and-date release failing to provide much of a boost to its $8.6 million three-day gross in the U.S. This installment of the franchise continues the story told in the 1970s TV show and two previous films, 2000’s “Charlie’s Angels” and 2003’s “Charlie Angels: Full Throttle,” none of which was ever popular in the mainland. According to ticketing platform Maoyan, the latter movie received some sort of China release in 2003 that netted it just $2 million.

A woman’s 30-year longing for the man she can’t stop loving is chronicled in “Somewhere Winter,” a rewarding adaptation of the novel by prolific author and screenwriter Rao Xueman. by top Mark Lee Ping Bing (“In the Mood for Love”) and features fine performances by Ma Sichun (“Soulmate”) and Wallace Huo (“Our Time Will Come”) as lovers torn apart by fate, family responsibilities and political forces. This handsomely packaged item from producer Jimmy Huang and director David Wang Weiming (“Sex Appeal”) should receive a warm reception when it opens in China and North America on Nov. 15.
The film’s title refers to “Possibly in Winter,” a 1987 hit by Taiwanese singer Chyi Chin that inspired a teenage Rao Xueman to write to her idol. Chyi’s ballad about long-distance relationships provided the linking device for Rao’s 2018 novel about a woman’s romantic journey during times of great social and economic change in China.

There’s a real winner on the horizon. Unfortunately, it’s a ways off. Still, we’ve got the news about The Extraordinary Adventures of Adele Blanc-Sec coming to Blu-Ray and DVD, and it’s worth taking a look. Based on a wildly popular French comic, the story gives us something akin to the young, female Indiana Jones, and just off the trailer (nevermind the critical acclaim the film has already received), it looks like a fantastic family film.

Well, this certainly gives "French kiss" new meaning. Marion Cotillard and her boyfriend, Guillaume Canet, paused for some puckering while shopping at The Grove outdoor mall in Hollywood on Tuesday. But making the sweet moment all the sweeter was the fact that the lovebirds made sure to include their young son, Marcel, by affectionately caressing his adorable noggin. Cotillard and Canet began dating five years ago, and previously costarred in the 2003 French romance Love Me If You Dare. The couple welcomed Marcel in May 2011. And it's pretty obvious, they're still in love with each other...and their little one!

Life During Wartime: Barratier Schmaltifies Nazi Occupied France
France has made a considerable move to reclaim her literature, as not one but two French productions of Louis Pergaud’s 1912 novel, War of the Buttons, have been released this year. This brings the total number of filmed adaptations of the celebrated novel to five, with two original French versions (in 1937 and 1962), and the better known 1994 UK version from John Roberts previously standing as the definitive English speaking film version. However, thus far, the Us will only be privy to one of the new additions, that directed by Christophe Barratier, the man whose directorial debut, 2004’s The Chorus was nominated for Best Foreign film in Americaland (the other, from Yann Samuell, whose 2003 debut, the much celebrated Love Me If You Dare top lines Guillaume Canet, used in Barratier’s ensemble here, but has yet to receive distribution in the Us market...

Guillaume Canet has attracted the attention of international audiences through performances in films like Love Me If You Dare, The Beach, and this year’s Last Night, but he’s also an accomplished filmmaker in his own right. Having helmed Tell No One and Little White Lies, his career behind the camera is a budding, promising one to take note of.
ScreenDaily (via ThePlaylist) is now reporting on his fourth feature, Blood Ties. His planned remake of 2008′s Les Liens Du Sang (which he starred in) is being co-written with James Gray, and has attracted Mark Wahlberg, Zoe Saldana, and Canet‘s wife, Marion Cotillard. This is expected to follow the plot of the original, which was “a 70s-set drama about two brothers, one a cop, the other a criminal fresh out of the joint”; the location is being switched from Lyons to Philadelphia.

In addition, Canet's partner, the lovely Marion Cotillard, Zoe Saldana and Mark Wahlberg are all slated to star. Though Canet starred in the original film, it's not clear if he'll step in front of the camera again to tell the story of two brothers, one a cop, the other a pimp and convicted criminal fresh out of prison who somehow manages...

The stars will be centre stage at the Cannes film festival, even if parenthood keeps them from taking place of honour on the red carpet
A film festival requires its talented "golden couple" almost as much as its long red carpet – and at Cannes the prospect of a pair of glamorous homegrown lovers is especially tantalising. So whether the sun shines on the Côte d'Azur or not, hopes are high for an appearance from the Oscar-winning Marion Cotillard and her partner, the acclaimed writer, director and actor Guillaume Canet.
Cotillard has been invited as one of the stars of the film that will open the festival, Woody Allen's Midnight in Paris. Taking the role of the "muse" in Allen's celebration of the city and its myths, she will feature alongside France's first lady, Carla Bruni, and the Hollywood A-listers Owen Wilson and Rachel McAdams.

Keira Knightley and Guillaume Canet in Last Night
Photo: Tribeca Films I saw Massy Tadjedin's Last Night starring Keira Knightley, Eva Mendes, Sam Worthington and Guillaume Canet at the Toronto International Film Festival last year and really liked it. I am going to be watching it again soon as it is set to make its way to Video on Demand on April 20th followed by a theatrical release on May 6 and today I have a few new goodies from the film for you.
Last Night, to quote my review, "is a stunning tale of fidelity and marital trust." I nearly compared it to Closer in my review in the way it's primarily a dialogue driven feature that's able to turn a relationship drama into a sort of relationship thriller, but I felt the comparison would get muddled amongst the rest of my words.
It's not a perfect film, as...

[1] One smaller film I've been looking forward to is Massy Tadjedin's Last Night, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last fall. The movie centers around married couple Keira Knightley and Sam Worthington, who each find themselves tempted to stray on one fateful night. Worthington's character goes on a business trip with sexy coworker Eva Mendes, while Knightley runs into old flame Guillame Canet (star of Love Me if you Dare, director of Tell No One, baby daddy of Marion Cotillard). If the last trailer [2] seemed to emphasize Worthington's infidelity, this one focuses more on Knightley's. And it's just as good, if not better. Watch the new trailer after the jump. [via The Playlist [3]] Judging by this trailer, Last Night looks like a promising start for first-time director Tadjedin. As someone who's a total sucker for quiet interpersonal dramas, I think this one has real potential. I especially love that there...
