In her new stand-up special, A Different Animal, Iliza Shlesinger establishes early whom her two main beefs are with. She thinks zoomers are too mean to millennials, who have all the same complaints about society, plus back pain and heartburn. And she thinks men are clowns for illustrating their dating profiles with photos of themselves holding fish; forming intense opinions about Viking fan art; and lecturing captive audiences about the films of Christopher Nolan. The kicker in her list of things only men do: “Maybe being a piece of shit your whole life, finding out you’re having a baby and that it’s a girl, and then and Only then realizing women are people too.”
It’s an easy applause line for a crowd that’s apparently primed for the kind of humor normally reserved for the sassy wives of clueless husbands in paper-towel commercials. But if Shlesinger’s...

Peter Engel, who executive produced Saved by the Bell and a host of other teen sitcoms for NBC, died Tuesday at his home in Santa Monica, his son Stephen David Engel announced. He was 88.
The show that became Saved by the Bell began life as Good Morning, Miss Bliss on Disney Channel. The series at the time focused on Hayley Mills, who played the title character, and her students at an Indianapolis junior high school. That show lasted only one season, but after a retooling (and change in setting to Southern California), the NBC-produced show was relaunched as Saved by the Bell and became both a staple of NBC’s Saturday lineup from 1989-93 and a touchstone show for Gen X and millennial viewers.
The show helped launch the careers of its young cast — Mark-Paul Gosselaar, Tiffani Thiessen, Mario Lopez, Elizabeth Berkley, Dustin Diamond and Lark Voorhies — and spawned a...

A light-hearted comedy film for fans of Amy Schumer.
Fake Pregnancy, Real Love
You’re “Kinda Pregnant“? There’s no such condition. There is if you make it up! That’s what Lainy Newton (played by Amy Schumer) did. Some women get jealous of other women who get pregnant. They can become extremely envious if the pregnant woman is a close friend who looks like she’ll be enjoying all of the wonderful things in life that they aren’t enjoying … at the moment. Well! It’s possible they could also experience similar joys in life but … are you that desperate and jealous that you’d actually fake a pregnancy? This isn’t a competition, you know?

Starting in early January, comic Gary Gulman settled in at the off-Broadway Lucille Lortel Theatre in New York for a month-long residency performing his new one-man show Grandiloquent.
Gulman is known for his stand-up specials, such as In This Economy?, Great Depresh, Boyish Man, It’s About Time and Born On 3rd Base. He was a two-time finalist on NBC’s Last Comic Standing and also co-starred in the Hulu series Life and Beth alongside Amy Schumer. Born On 3rd Base, Gulman’s most recent comedy special released on Max in 2023, saw him depart from his usual sense of humor to delve deeper into his childhood growing up in Massachusetts and his struggles with depression.
Although critics have assured that Grandiloquent, as a performance, is funny, they note that Gulman delivers a previously unseen – and surprising – poignancy to his work.

After comedian Jo Koy previously bombed the 2024 Golden Globes with his cringe-worthy jokes and failed performance, it was rather gutsy of the award show to levy the responsibility on yet another comic in 2025. Yes, popular comedian Nikki Glaser hosted this year’s Golden Globes.

When fellow emerging comedian Glorelys Mora and I first met in the comedy scene - it was an instant connection. I was in awe of her ability to capture and materialize people's need for expression through comedy. Her determination and contagious, guttural laugh drew me in, and we quickly bonded over our shared experiences and challenges as Dominican comedians. As comics, we spent hours discussing how difficult it was to gain support and recognition in an industry that often overlooks voices like ours. Our conversations sparked a vision: to create a dedicated platform that would elevate Dominican voices in comedy.
When we started Morir Soñando, it was a venture born out of necessity and a deep love for our culture. I'd long felt comedy was missing something crucial - an authentic representation of Dominican voices. While the comedy scene is vibrant and diverse, Dominican comedians often lack a platform that...

After burning through countless stories involving his family and personal (mis)adventures with his Netflix specials Secret Time and Hey Big Boy, comedian Bert Kreischer squeezed “the last bit of juice out of the orange” with his latest, the Golden Globes contender Razzle Dazzle.
The Florida native feels, looking back, that this special is most certainly “the best” he’s put out so far. “I feel like it is all where I’ve grown, and I think it is all the shit you love me for,” he tells Deadline. “There’s a lot of great family stuff. There’s wild, funny stories. There’s a f*ckng ass hair cutting, and I know it’s performed better than any of my other specials, which is insane when you think Hey Big Boy was released three days after stay-at-home orders for [Covid]. Zainab Johnson needs to be our new Queen of Comedy. She’s just so good. And gutsy. As Aleesha, one of the AI-afterlife managers on Prime Video‘s Upload, the former semi-finalist from Last Comic Standing has had three fire seasons of cracking us up in an ensemble element. But this past October, Johnson took center stage—and owned it from every angle!—for her first hour-long comedy special. Shot in the round at Harlem Stage in her New York hometown, Hijabs Off allows Johnson to finally showcase her brainy, brave and deeply personal material. Prime Video “I feel like stand-up comedy started out as a transformative art form,” she notes in the video above. “And I really wanted to try to capture that thing that I used to watch when I was growing up.” Adding that she’s always been told that she “reveled in the silence” during her sets,...

Zainab Johnson has filmed her first original comedy special.
The actress and stand-up recently taped the solo debut, Zainab Johnson: Hijabs Off, and it will start streaming on Prime Video this fall. The Oct. 24 premiere date is fortuitous for both Johnson and the streamer, as it follows the third-season premiere of her series (Upload) by only four days.
Hijabs Off finds Johnson leaning on her unique identity — namely growing up a Black Muslim woman in a Harlem house where she was one of 13 children. Johnson has been a working stand-up for years. She competed on late NBC reality show Last Comic Standing, appeared in HBO’s All Def Comedy and has performed on Late Night with Seth Meyers, in addition to her regular club work.
In addition to her series regular role on Upload, Johnson’s acting resume includes Ramy, A Black Lady Sketch Show, American Koko and Private Practice.

On Fox's new reality series Stars On Mars, twelve "celebronauts" compete to see who has what it takes to colonize the Red Planet. The cast receives assignments from legendary actor William Shatner, who is perfect for the role, as he has some experience with space himself. Not only did the 92-year-old actor play Captain James T. Kirk in the Star Trek franchise for three decades, but he has even traveled to space. On October 13, 2021, he became the oldest person ever to fly into space, when he took part in Blue Origin's second sub-orbital human spaceflight, Blue Origin Ns-18.

Taylor Tomlinson has mined her up-bringing in a devout Christian family for laughs in her comedy act and Netflix stand-up specials. Now, her story will be the basis of a new feature film.
Village Roadshow Pictures has acquired the rights to an untitled movie based on the life of the hit stand-up comedian, outbidding several other suitors. Paul Weitz will direct from a script written by Tomlinson and Taylor Tetreau. Tomlinson will also star in the project.
Weitz most recently directed “Fatherhood” starring Kevin Hart, which made Netflix’s all-time top 10 list last summer. He is currently in post-production on a comedy that he wrote and directed entitled “Moving On” starring Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin. Weitz co-directed “About a Boy” and “American Pie” with his brother Chris Weitz. His directing credits include the acclaimed comedy “Grandma” (also with Tomlin) and “Admission” with Tina Fey and Paul Rudd.
