March 2016 marks 20 years since the passing of Lucio Fulci, one of the giants of Italian exploitation cinema.
So what better time to look back at his claret-coloured career?
If you know Fulci’s name at all, it’s probably in connection with his gory 80s horror pictures, which earned him the nickname ‘The Godfather Of Gore’. The same title was bestowed on Herschell Gordon Lewis a decade earlier, but it fits Fulci better – not only are his effects more realistic but his films are better made.
There’s more to Fulci than blood and guts, though, and over the course of a career that spanned five decades he either wrote or directed westerns, comedies, and thrillers. Like many Italian filmmakers, he also made several giallo movies (a distinctly Italian mix of horror and detective film), but unlike his contemporary Dario Argento he could direct just as easily in other genres.

The Tall Man
Starring: Jessica Biel, Jodelle Ferland, Samantha Ferris, Stephen McHattie, Jakob Davies, Eve Harlow, William B. Davis Written and Directed by Pascal Laugier
500,000 children disappear every year. Most of them turn back up, but 1,000 vanish without a trace. That is the social premise that we walk into, and we already know “The Tall Man” is, at least, partly responsible for this number. Or is he?
From the black screen comes a concerned and bewildered Lieutenant Dodd (the ever grizzled Stephen McHattie), who’s in a cave, looking for something, someone(s). He returns to a bruised, bloody and broken Jessica Biel, or Julia Denning, the widow of the town’s esteemed doctor. He couldn’t find “him,” or the others. And whoosh, we jump to 36 hours earlier.
We land in a dead town, a small Washington hovel named Cold Rock (that doesn’t exist), and it’s hard...

Remember the name Pascal Laugier. While virtually unknown to most of the movie going public, he’s been a name that horror fans have been paying close attention to since he’s debuted on the scene with The House Of Voices and Martyrs. His newest feature, The Tall Man, is a much bigger film, with a larger budget and larger star power, with Jessica Biel leading a cast that includes Stephen McHattie, Jodell Ferland and Samantha Ferris.
Based on its marketing, one would expect your run of the mill slasher flick, with Biel running and screaming from “The Tall Man” in skimpy outfits. But, the advertisements lie. This is not that film. This is what I expected, for sure, but what I got was not an easy film, not at all what I expected when I sat down to watch it. This is exactly what Laugier wants. If you should...

The Tall Man, written and directed by Pascal Laugier (Martyrs, Saint Ange) revolves around a small town nurse (Jessica Biel). Who after her child is abducted attempts to unravel the local truth around a mysterious dark figure of urban legend known only as “The Tall Man”, which has been blamed for the kidnapping of multiple local children over a span of the last six years in backwoods Colorado. Scheduled for a limited theatrical release on August 31st, 2012 followed by a DVD and Blu-ray release on September 25th this has what it takes to become a sleeper hit among moviegoers lucky enough to have it screen in their area.
I went into this film knowing nothing beyond the fact it was built around an urban legend about an entity that steals children in the night. Right a way I found myself drawn in by its high quality presentation and authentically creepy and interesting story.

With The Tall Man, writer/director Pascal Laugier seems to be abandoning the gory and extreme hell he created in Martyrs in favor of a more atmospheric tale in the vein of his previous film House of Voices (which I randomly found a couple of years ago at Big Lots for only $3!). The official trailer has been released by Image Entertainment, and while you may not get a heavy dose of scenes spotlighting the cloaked figure lurking amid the shadows, the footage does setup the seemingly normal, small, mountainous town and the history surrounding some child disappearances. There have been several international trailers that have surfaced online for the film. This new “official trailer” is certainly not a stretch in terms of showing new footage, but it will still excite horror fans excited for this upcoming thriller. Not to mention, seeing Jessica Biel (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake) return to...

Pascal Laugier, the director behind the controversial Martyrs, and the understated (and under-appreciated) House Of Voices, is out to scare us again with The Tall Man, or The Secret as this new French trailer is titled, for it's overseas release. For my money, Laugier is potentially one of the saviors of the modern horror genre, and has shown an understanding and breadth of style within it's parameters, with both Martyrs and Voices, which are wildly different films. Now mucking around with the tried and true "boogeyman" trope, Laugier looks to be finding his true stride, with The Tall Man aka The Secret. Keep your eyes on your local movie listings, this one is looking good. Three cheers too, for seeing The Cigarette Smoking Man himself...

The Pascal Laugier (Martyrs, House Of Voices) film follows an angry man after the local Big & Tall is shut down is set in a small town where children are vanishing left and right, and the mysterious “Tall Man” is to blame. You’ll have to wait till September 5th to see how Biel and company stop him.

I’m going to start by boldly/naively stating that I am not as big a fan of horror as I could be or indeed as many of you are likely to be. Yet I do have faith in the genre, I believe it to have the possibility and potential to make classic cinema, the obvious likes of Alien and The Shining are fine examples of that. As horror continues on into the 21st century there are one or two pieces of cinematic gold for every dozen appalling slasher sequels, monster mash-ups and vampire flicks.
Below is a list of 10 filmmakers, writers and actors who I guestimate could be crucial to the future of horror. So here it goes, a horror rookie looking into the possible future crystal ball of the genre with some very safe predictions (filmmakers that have already proven their craft) and a few more riskier suggestions.

The horror movie remake arena continues to grow as yet another foreign flick gets the green light to move forward.
The French horror movie Martyrs by Pascal Laugier's will get an American horror remake thumbs up via the the producers of Twilight. The director of 'The Last Exorcism', Daniel Stamm has been tapped for the film as well.
Martyrs tells the story of Lucie and Anna, two orphans who develop a strong bond with each other, until one of them seeks revenge on a family who may or may not have abused her as a child. Director Daniel Stamm had the following to say about the movie: "Martyrs is very nihilistic. The American approach [that I'm looking at] would go through all that darkness but then give a glimmer of hope. You don't have to shoot yourself when it's over."
Stamm has denied any rumor that says Twilight starlet Kristin Stewart will star in the remake.

There's an inevitable trajectory for attractive women who don't quite accomplish Julia Roberts or Reese Witherspoon levels of fame. They make a handful of romantic comedies, a handful of action movies playing the token hot woman, and then begin the inexorable slide into the horror movie you won't know exists until it shows up on cable in five years. Such seems to be the case with Jessica Biel, who JoBlo reports has signed on for the indie thriller The Tall Man, which is currently shooting in Canada. Pascal Laugier, behind the French thrillers Martyrs and House of Voices, is directing his own screenplay, about the legendary "Tall Man" rumored to be kidnapping children in a small village. Biel will play a woman on a hunt for her son, joined in the cast by Stephen McHattie, William B. Davis, Samantha Ferris and Jodelle Ferland.

We learned of some exciting news, although the French director is keeping tight-lipped. We had heard Pascal Laugier was currently prepping a non-us horror production, but could only confirm details would be revealed at next month's Afm. What I discovered will please hardcore Laugier fans who have been following him since his early days up until the recent release of Martyrs. We're Told, and have yet to confirm, that his next project will in fact be the long-planned The Tall Man, a film he's been talking about since 2006. After the release of Saint Ange, Laugier spoke with Allocine.fr and told them that the "story is too similar to a recently released movie, but it is a beautiful project that I keep patiently in the drawers." He also has always kept the plot details tight-lipped. If anyone has any more info, please pass it by.

Clive Barker has revealed, via his Twitter, that Pascal Laugier, the French filmmaker who was brought on to write and direct a remake of Barker’s classic horror film Hellraiser, is no longer attached to the project. Barker didn’t provide a reason for Laugier’s departure, saying: “I don't know much more. I mean why would anyone tell me? I mostly discover these things here or through friends who still buy the trades.” Released in 1987, Hellraiser told the story of an unfaithful wife who attempts to assist her dead lover in his escape from hell. The movie introduced viewers to a race of demons called Cenobites, most notably one nicknamed Pinhead — who became one of the most enduring horror characters of the decade — who was summoned using an antique puzzle box. Dimension has been hoping to relaunch the Hellraiser franchise for the past couple of years, first hiring Julien...

The most talked-about, shocked-about and divisive movie at the Cannes Film Festival last year wasn’t an entry in any of the competitive strands. It was only screened twice in the marketplace, and quickly became the hottest topic of every conversation. Those who loved it absolutely loved it; those who hated it felt it marked a nadir in extreme degradation, the ultimate in so-called “torture porn” and the end of cinematic civilization. But for this Fangorian, Pascal Laugier’s Martyrs is the clearest indication yet that today’s French horror is the only platform allowing a currently all-too-safe genre to find its excitement, power and strength again.
Laugier’s esoteric development of an everyday tabloid headline into a Clive Barker-esque underworld nightmare is a challenging, disturbing and thoroughly uncompromising work. It couldn’t be further from the tired, old-style mainstream scary movie that too many purveyors seem to think is all that’s required.

The toughest thing about visiting the American Film Market is finding time to squeeze in as many movies as humanly possible before your head explodes from retinal abuse. At this year’s 29th annual Afm, held November 5-12 in Santa Monica, CA, I watched 25 movies in seven days, and I still couldn’t squeeze in everything I wanted to see.
I had to sacrifice the Brit gorefest Mum & Dad and Combat Shock director Buddy Giovinazzo’s Life Is Hot In Cracktown, sadly. And I’m withholding judgment on Jamie (Urban Legend) Blanks’ Long Weekend remake until I watch the original on DVD.
Ok, I covered the travelogue and business stuff already (see here). You’re more interested in the movies, right? Well, here are my capsule comments on some upcoming fright fare that I got an early gander at. For more information on the Afm, go here.
