Miramax Films’ musical fantasy comedy Ella Enchanted will officially be heading to a brand-new streaming home soon. The 2004 movie was led by Academy Award-winner Anne Hathaway in one of her earliest movie roles, following the success of 2001’s The Princess Diaries.

Beginning on March 6, Ella Enchanted will be available for streaming on Prime Video. In the film, Hathaway portrayed the titular role of Ella, a young woman whose fairy godmother granted her the magical gift of obedience. This ability requires her to immediately obey any command she has been given. However, as she grows up, this so-called gift proves to be more of a curse than a blessing, since it gives anyone the power to take advantage of her. During its theatrical run, it received negative reviews from critics and fans of the novel, with a Tomatometer rating of 51% on Rotten Tomatoes. This was due to its lack of faithfulness from the original source material.

The Princess Diaries 2 star John Rhys-Davies reveals his interest in reprising his role in The Princess Diaries 3. The Lord of the Rings and Indiana Jones star appeared in the sequel released in 2004 as Viscount Mabrey, a member of Genovia's parliament who plots to steal the crown. To do so, Mabrey tries to manipulate his nephew, Nicholas (Chris Pine), to claim his place on the Throne, before pivoting to embroil Princess Mia (Anne Hathaway) in scandal. Since then, Princess Diaries 3 has been confirmed, although it's in its early development.

Despite his scheme being exposed to Genovia and his public disowning, Rhys-Davies revealed to Collider that he not only defends his character but hopes to bring him back to try once more to seize power. Rather than returning as a simple MP, the actor suggested Mabrey should've aimed higher than that and become Prime Minister.

Sebastian Stan recently revealed that he came close to landing the role of Captain James T. Kirk in director J.J. Abrams' 2009 Star Trek reboot. While appearing on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Tuesday, Pine addressed the big announcement that Anne Hathaway will return to star in a Princess Diaries 3. Pine starred alongside Hathaway in The Princess Diaries 2: The Royal Engagement which marked his film debut at the time.

Based on the young adult novels by Meg Cabot, The Princess Diaries tells the story of Mia Thermopolis, a typical nerdy high school student who’s rocked when her grandmother drops into town and reveals the truth: Mia’s father was the crown prince of the country of Genovia and Mia is now in line for the throne. After a makeover to transform her into a knockout beauty, Mia is trained to become a royal while wanting to keep her normal life.

The film premiered in 2001 with a then-unknown Anne Hathway as Mia and Disney legend Julie Andrews as her grandmother, Clarisse. The film was a massive hit, grossing $165 million, and instantly made Hathaway a star. She and Andrews returned for a 2004 sequel The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement.

After two years of uncertainty for whether she'd return to the franchise, Anne Hathaway is officially coming back for The Princess Diaries 3. Development on a third installment in the coming-of-age comedy movie series was first announced in late 2022 as Disney was moving forward with Reacher's Aadrita Mukerji writing the screenplay. Throughout the past two years, original star Julie Andrews has expressed uncertainty about her potential return, while Hathaway's talks for Princess Diaries 3 were said to be underway in April 2024.

Hathaway took to her Instagram to confirm her return for The Princess Diaries 3 with a video post. As seen below, the Oscar winner can be seen counting up from one to three, interspliced with clips from the previous movies of her and Julie Andrews' characters exclaiming "Shut up!", before getting to three, in which she says it herself and cuts to a screenshot of the announcement that Adele Lim would be directing.

Update: It really wouldn’t be The Princess Diaries without Anne Hathaway, would it? Thankfully, the actress took to Instagram to officially confirm that she would be returning for The Princess Diaries 3 under the direction of Adele Lim.

The actress confirmed the news on Instagram hours after Deadline exclusively reported that director Adele Lim had boarded the threequel.

In the video she posted, Hathaway counted to three with cuts of her younger self as Mia Thermopolis and Julie Andrews as Queen Clarisse Renaldi both saying, “Shut up!”

Lim, who wrote Disney’s animated feature Raya and the Last Dragon (2021) and made her directorial debut with Lionsgate’s R-rated comedy Joy Ride (2023) starring Ashley Park, Sherry Cola, Stephanie Hsu and Sabrina Wu. Lim’s credits also include being a writer-producer on One Tree Hill and Lethal Weapon as well as co-showrunning Star-Crossed. She also wrote the Jon Chu-directed rom com Crazy Rich Asians based on the book by Kevin Kwan.
