There have been things loved as a child watched much later, and the question "what made me like this when younger?" crops up in my mind. That is not the case at all with Garfield, 'Garfield and Friends' and his special. If anything they are even better now, coming from a young adult but, as pathetic as this sounds, who is a child at heart. Will always like Garfield, he is a very funny and lovable character.
Of the specials, 'Garfield's Feline Fantasies' is one of my personal favourites and all of them are good and more in their own way. The others being 'A Garfield Christmas Special' and 'Garfield in Disguise', both among the best films/specials for Christmas and Halloween. For me, it is one of the funniest Garfield specials and also one of the most imaginative. What could have been easily tired, considering it's not the most original of premises, turned out actually to be something that was so entertaining, inventive and clever and fairly different for Garfield.
So many great merits with 'Garfield's Feline Fantasies' and actually cannot think of anything to criticise it for. The animation is still as colourful as remembered with the smooth drawing, far from sparse backgrounds and attention to detail holding up really well. The music also is extremely catchy.
Entertainment value, as to be expected, is non-stop, with more hilarious gags than one can count and the wry and witty writing shines like the brightest of stars. Of the specials, 'Garfield's Feline Fantasies' is one of the funniest, second only to 'Garfield in Disguise'. Also always have loved the rousing action, the clever and hilarious parodies and the imaginative fantasy touches embedded throughout. The standout agreed being when Garfield imagines his alter ego Lance Sterling. At the same time, the charm and heart is also here while not being sentimental.
Garfield is as hilarious and lovable as ever and can never get enough of Odie, who is so cute without being overly so, his chemistry with Garfield very endearing. They are especially entertaining in the western showdown fantasy. The supporting characters are fun, but Odie and especially Garfield are the stars here. Voice acting is on point, nobody portrayed Garfield better than Lorenzo Music and the others were not even close.
Concluding, fabulous and one of Garfield's best. This is an example of what Garfield is all about and a perfect example of why he has so much appeal. 10/10
