The sharks used in this film were Caribbean Reef Sharks. The cast wore chain mesh under their diving suits for protection and though none of them was bitten by the sharks, Blanchard Ryan (Susan) was nipped by a barracuda on the first day of filming. In the movie, after Susan is bitten, her boyfriend says, "It was probably a barracuda seeing what you taste like."

Goofs
When Susan asks, "Where's the boat?", they are in the shadow of the camera boat.

Quotes
Susan: Was that a shark?
Daniel: I don't know. I think it was a dolphin.
Susan: No it wasn't a dolphin, because if it was you would be over there playing with it!

Crazy credits
As the credits roll, a fisherman guts a dead shark. As he sorts through the contents of its stomach, he finds Susan and Daniel's yellow camera.

Realistic Human Terror.

The terror doesn't come from gruesome shark attacks. So if that's what you're looking for, you'll be disappointed. This movie strikes a deeper chord than typical blood-and-gore, shock-fest horror movies; and it may be that desensitized viewers who are incapable of genuine human emotion and empathy will not appreciate it. This film is about real psychological, existential terror -- similar to the effect achieved by Werner Herzog's Grizzly Man.
