Host: Idris Elba
As another first-time host, Idris Elba is the latest celebrity to give a pretty heartfelt opening monologue. Over 20 years ago, he was a part-time weed-dealing bouncer in New York City, and now he’s here, hosting “Saturday Night Live.” It’s the American dream.
But then the rest of the episode happens.
The first official sketch of the episode — “Can I Play That?” — honestly sets the tone for Elba’s hosting duties for the rest of the night: This will be an episode about working around Elba. It’s not that Elba is bad. He stumbles over his lines a few times in the night, but that’s often when he’s also focusing on an American accent. But he’s not a comedian or a past “Saturday Night Live” cast member/writer who has a specific comedic voice. Even though he’s the “Sexiest Man Alive,...

The fourth in the popular Gold Diggers musicals, Gold Diggers of 1935 is glossier than previous entries and, since it was produced nearer to the depression’s end, pointedly free of the heavy dramaturgy that made the earlier entries so compelling. It’s a strong entry nonetheless with Busby Berkeley taking over both direction chores and, not for nothing, coming up with the ne plus ultra of Berkeley extravaganzas, Lullaby of Broadway. Starring the inveterate charmer Dick Powell and the Invisible Man’s girlfriend, Gloria Stuart.

10. “What Would Diplo Do”
Season 1, Episode 2, “The Cult”
Directed by Brandon Dermer
Written by James Van Der Beek
“What would Diplo do?” is a question addressed throughout the first few episodes of Viceland’s new comedy, but what Diplo actually does gets tackled head on in Episode 2. Functioning as a response to Diplo’s most human moment in the pilot (asking nemesis Calvin Harris if all they do as DJs is push a button), the episode examines the creation of one song — just one — over the course of, well, quite a long time.
When a reporter stops by to write a story on how Diplo (James Van Der Beek) creates a song, he becomes witness to a maniacal process involving rats, post-its, a blender, and, yes, a cult. The running joke is that Diplo goes to crazy extremes just to get back to where he started, but there’s a...

Remember the first ever Love Island with its seemingly clueless single celebrities constantly bickering on a tumultuous and stormy (literally and metaphorically) Fijian island?
Even the show's co-hosts Kelly Brook and Patrick Kielty were baying for one another's blood when Kielty decided to declare during one live show that Brook had previously dated contestant Paul Danan.
Other memorable highlights included Abi Titmuss becoming more and more enraged as Fran Cosgrave repeatedly referred to her as Vanessa Feltz, swiftly followed by a tipsy and uncouth Rebecca Loos letting rip.
The series aired almost exactly a decade ago, so we found ourselves wondering - whatever happened to eventual winner Jayne Middlemiss? And the Love Island love god that was Lee Sharpe?
As the new non-celebrity series currently enjoys its ITV2 revival, we find out what the 12 star contestants have gone on to do since their 2005 stint below:

The Writers Guild of America announced the TV nominees for the 2015 WGA Awards on Thursday (December 4) morning and several new shows broke into the fields in a big way. And, of course, there were a number of big WGA Award nomination head-scratchers. Specifically, where the heck was FX's "Fargo"? The answer is below. Making perhaps the biggest splash was "Transparent," which earned three nominations and, since "Orange Is The New Black" earned two nods and "House of Cards" pick up one, that meant that Amazon Prime and Netflix are, at least for one award-giving organization, on equal footing as creators of original programming. The Jill Soloway-created "Transparent" is nominated for New Series, where it will go against "The Affair," "The Knick," "Silicon Valley" and "True Detective." "Transparent" and "Silicon Valley" are also up for Comedy Series, going against "Louie," "Veep" and "Orange Is The New Black." Lest you panic...

Watching the expansive three-part miniseries "Klondike," Discovery's Channel's first scripted project (starting Mon. Jan. 20 at 9:00 p.m.) will leave you cold. Literally. Thanks to cinematic imagery, storylines that highlight the high stakes (and fleeting rewards) of the Klondike Gold Rush of the 1890s, and three nights of avalanches, typhus and murder (yup, it's all there -- the miniseries is based on Charlotte Gray's 2011 book "Gold Diggers: Striking It Rich in the Klondike"), you'll not only feel the cold, the intensely dangerous plight of these adventurers will send a chill through your veins. Everyone wants scripted programming these days -- even the Discovery channel, which will take its first dig into scripted TV with gold rush miniseries "Klondike." Based on Charlotte Gray’s book "Gold Diggers: Striking It Rich in the Klondike," the six-part period drama is produced by Ridley Scott, directed by Simon Cellan Jones ("The One and Only") and stars Richard Madden (King of the North Robb Stark on "Game of Thrones," returning to snowy terrain), Tim Blake Nelson, Abbie Cornish, Tim Roth and Chris Cooper. The trailer, below, seems to promise an exploration of American Naturalism and a "man versus nature" theme, even including famed author Jack London as a character. The series will follow the lives of two childhood best friends, Bill (Madden) and Epstein (Augustus Prew), in the late 1890s as they flock to the gold rush capital in the untamed Yukon Territory to claim their fortune.

Variety reports that Game Of Thrones star Richard Madden has signed onto Disney’s new live-action Cinderella film to play the Prince.
Lily James, of Downtown Abbey fame will play Cinderella and Cate Blanchett (Elizabeth, Lotr Trilogy) will play the evil stepmother.
The film is directed by Kenneth Branagh (Hamlet, Thor) who places an emphasis on acting. The casting is telling, because while these may not be the most recognizable stars, they are all well-respected for their acting abilities.
Actor Madden will also appear in Discovery Channel’s Klondike, a six-hour miniseries about the Canadian Gold Rush, based on the novel Gold Diggers: Striking It Rich in the Klondike, by Charlotte Gray.

The Discovery Channel has been developing its first scripted project, in the form of a hearty miniseries titled Klondike and based upon Charlotte Gray’s novel Gold Diggers: Striking It Rich In The Klondike. This week the upcoming series adds actor Sam Shepard to it’s cast.
The actor who played Chuck Yeager in The Right Stuff in 1983 also happens to be quite the author, playwright and screenwriter. Among his accolades are a Pulitzer Prize win for Drama in 1979 for his play Buried Child. In Klondike, Shepard will be replacing another great actor, Mr. Chris Cooper. Cooper pulled out of filming just last to “attend to a personal matter” reported Deadline. I think if you can’t have Cooper, Shepard is a terrific second choice. Both men bring grit to their parts. The role is for “Father Judge”, a man who journeys to the Klondike hoping to save souls.

Sam Shepard has joined the cast of Discovery Channel’s miniseries Klondike, which marks the channel’s first scripted project. Shepard replaces Chris Cooper, who pulled out last week to attend to a personal matter. Based on Charlotte Gray’s novel Gold Diggers: Striking It Rich In The Klondike, the mini tells the story of six strangers and their collective fight for survival and wealth in a small frontier town in the remote Klondike. Shepard will play Father Judge, who has come to Klondike to atone for his violent past on a mission to save souls. Scott Free Prods, Discovery Entertainment One and Nomadic Pictures produce the mini, which is in production in Alberta, Canada. ICM Partners-repped Shepard will next be seen in the movies Mud, August: Osage County and Out Of The Furnace.

Chris Cooper has exited Discovery Channel‘s miniseries Klondike due to a personal matter that has unexpectedly arisen. The Oscar winner was the first actor cast in the mini, produced by Scott Free Prods, Discovery Entertainment One and Nomadic Pictures. Based on Charlotte Gray’s novel Gold Diggers: Striking It Rich In The Klondike, the mini tells the story of six strangers and their collective fight for survival and wealth in a small frontier town in the remote Klondike. Cooper was to play Father Judge, who has come to Klondike to atone for his violent past on a mission to save souls. The role will now be recast. “I have nothing but respect and admiration for Discovery, Ridley Scott and the very talented cast and crew for bringing this compelling project called Klondike to life and for inviting me to be a part of it,” Cooper said. “It is...

If the Gold Rush intrigues you and the work of Jack London has long held a special place in your heart, then the Discovery Channel’s new project may be of particular interest to you. The network is planning to deliver Klondike, its first original scripted program, which comes in the form of a six-hour miniseries. Just don’t ask any of the actors what they would do for a Klondike bar.
The miniseries is based upon author Charlotte Gray’s novel entitled Gold Diggers: Striking It Rich In The Klondike. It will tell the story of six strangers as they grapple to acquire fortune and to just plain survive in the harsh frontier of the Klondike located in the Yukon territory.
According to Deadline, a solid cast has been developed. From Game Of Thrones comes Richard Madden, Augustus Prew of Charlie St. Cloud, Robocop‘s Abbie Cornish, Luck‘s Ian Hart,...

In this day and age, there’s a first time for everything and that includes the Discovery Channel diving headfirst into the realm of scripted television. Always known as network serving up quality documentary and reality television, Discovery is making its first-ever scripted miniseries, called Klondike. And to make a big thing of it and let everyone know this isn’t just some poorly written series filled with B-list actors, Klondike is grabbing well known faces to fill out its cast, including the recently announced casting of former Lie to Me star Tim Roth. If I were you, I would take Klondike seriously.
Based on Charlotte Gray’s book Gold Diggers: Striking It Rich in the Klondike, Klondike focuses on six strangers and their collective in a fight for survival and wealth in a small, frontier town in the untamed Yukon Territory. This is a man-versus-nature tale – the land...

Academy Award nominee and former Lie to Me frontman Tim Roth has joined the cast of Klondike, Discovery Channel’s first-ever scripted miniseries.
Based on Charlotte Gray’s book Gold Diggers: Striking It Rich in the Klondike, the project follows six strangers and their collective fight for survival and wealth in a small, frontier town in the untamed Yukon Territory. A man-versus-nature tale, it places the characters in a land abundant in undiscovered wealth yet ravaged by harsh conditions, unpredictable weather and desperate, dangerous characters — including greedy businessmen, seductive courtesans and territorial native tribes.

Discovery Channel is jumping into the increasingly popular basic cable scripted programming arena, with the mini-series "Klondike" and they've set Oscar-winning actor Chris Cooper to co-star.
Based on Charlotte Gray's novel "Gold Diggers: Striking It Rich in the Klondike," the mini will follow six strangers in a remote small town battling the environment and a collection of dangers characters as they search for gold in the 1890s.
Paul Scheuring ("Prison Break") is the primary writer and executive producers include Ridley Scott.
Cooper -- who won an Oscar for "Adaptation." and will soon be seen in "August: Osage County" opposite Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts -- will take on the role of Father Judge.
If the "Klondike" concept gives off a faint "Hatfields & McCoys" vibe, it's probably completely intentional. History's Emmy-winning miniseries set ratings records when it premiered last summer.
"Klondike" doesn't have an air date yet, but it's...

Oscar-winning actor Chris Cooper has taken the lead role in "Klondike" (that's a working title), the first-ever scripted miniseries from Discovery Channel. The drama, which was announced last year, is not, alas, about the invention of a delicious frozen dessert, but is instead adapted from Charlotte Gray's book "Gold Diggers: Striking It Rich in the Klondike," about six of the people who traveled out to a remote region of northwest Canada as part of the Klondike Gold Rush in the late 1800s. "Klondike" is a co-production between Discovery, eOne and Nomadic Pictures in association with Scott Free Television. Like other networks who've built their brand on nonfiction programming, including History ("Hatfields & McCoys") and National Geographic ("Seal Team Six: The Raid on Osama Bin Laden"), Discovery's making a first foray into the realms of scripted TV here and clearly aiming for prestige. Read on for the second part of my interview with Whit Stilman.
You’ve lived in London at one point, right?
I’ve spent a lot of time here but I was really living in Paris and Madrid. I came here to try and set up my films, without great success.
Did you have any plans to make films actually in London?

Women of Hollywood, do yourselves -- and your careers -- a favor: find Anna Feris's number. And call it.
And no, that's not a pun on her upcoming film, either.
The "House Bunny" and "Scary Movie" standout is due to star in the upcoming sex comedy, "What's Your Number?" and, if it does as well as expected, it's going to make her a very powerful lady in show business. Unfortunately, it's a rarity that a woman star can top line a straight comedy, and even rarer that an all-woman ensemble can do so. It happened with this spring's "Bridesmaids," and if Faris can pull it off, she says she wants her own "equivalent of the Judd Apatow crew," alluding to the Seth Rogen-led humor frat that consistently opens films to great fanfare.
She's already taking applications.

The Hollywood Reporter (Aka "Press Release Bulletin Board") calls Faris's newest movie script a "stalker comedy". This comes days after Faris admits that Hollywood sucks and women aren't allowed to be funny to The New Yorker.
In the April 11th, 2011 article entitled "Funny Like a Guy" (seriously) in the New Yorker Magazine, Anna Faris was interviewed by Tad Friend about her comedic career and where it's going.
While Friend's article does have some funteresting insights (like the Bechdel Test Rules for Gender Bias: The Bechdel Test is a way of examining movies for gender bias. The test poses three questions: Does a movie contain two or more female characters who have names? Do those characters talk to each other? And, if so, do they discuss something other than a man?), it's a rather depressing article about how female-driven blockbusters are rare because they don't make money, and because they don't make money studios hate them.

We’ll get a chance to see just how golden the Golden Age of Hollywood really was. That’s right. With comic book movie news flying all over the place and Sundance starting up, we’ll be talking in-depth about a man who died over thirty years ago. That’s just how we roll. Classic movie fans, be sure to join us for Reject Radio this Sunday at 10pm Est/7pm Pst for what promises to be a lively, feather boa-filled discussion.

It's not that I hate songs in movies; My Fair Lady is usually a nose ahead of 2001: A Space Odyssey for the top slot in my all-time favourite films. It's not even that I hate musical interludes in movies per se, as they can provide a fascinating insight into character, or introduce a new character in a spectacular and meaningful way...
But for every musical interlude as memorable as Jessica Rabbit beguiling down-at-heel tec Bob Hoskins with 'Why Don't You Do Right?' in Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988), there are hundreds, if not thousands, of songs that are cynically slotted into movies to sell records, 'cover all bases' or just generally pause the plot. These are the musical interludes that follow the original 1930s principle of musical interludes: something for everyone.
