As films like The Terminator, The Time Machine, Looper, Edge of Tomorrow, Back to the Future 2 and Hot Tub Time Machine 2 have proven, going backwards and forwards across history or into the far future can be perilous to both personal and universal health. But it has taken until now for a movie to say it out loud, and that movie is the brilliant British comedy Sci-Fi usurpingly titled Time Travel is Dangerous.
The set up is simple enough and starts when two friends Ruth and Megan find a time travel machine by the bins behind their vintage shop in Muswell Hill. The scientific marvel, which is actually a modified dodgem, takes them on jaunts across history where they pilfer anything they can from the bemused locals of the past to sell in their shop. Seemingly onto a great thing the pals are oblivious not only to how the time...

When the world is falling apart, sometimes the only thing left to do is laugh - these films get it.
I saw Bong Joon-ho’s new movie over the weekend, “Mickey 17,” which can only be described as a sci-fi black comedy. It wasn’t exactly what I was expecting, but it was one of the most visually beautiful movies I’ve ever seen. If you want to check it out, definitely try to see it in theaters, as the small screen will not do this movie justice. Robert Pattinson is excellent as Mickey Barnes – who has one job: die. Again and again. As an ‘expendable’ on a deep-space colonization mission, he’s used to being replaced — until he refuses to go quietly, sparking a darkly comedic showdown between a man who won’t stay dead and the system that keeps trying to kill him. It’s a really great sci-fi premise,...

The archive of the pioneering BBC Radiophonic Workshop is being made available for the first time for use by musical artists and producers in a move set to continue a legacy of helping invent and develop electronic music and sampling. The Workshop created legendary sounds and music for radio and TV series, such as Doctor Who, including its famous theme, Tomorrow’s World, and The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, giving, as the BBC noted, “the Tardis an engine and the Daleks a voice.”
The move comes thanks to a licensing deal and collaboration between Spitfire Audio, a London-based technology company that creates virtual instrument sample libraries used for music production, and BBC Studios. The BBC Radiophonic Workshop was launched in 1958, rose to prominence at its Maida Vale Studios in London, and closed in March 1998.

In this fantasy-satire of bourgeois family life, a girl is suddenly able to see everything her messed-up parents are up to
Here is a high-concept satire of bourgeois family life with all its secrets and lies from German film-maker Frédéric Hambalek; it is something to remind you of the notorious Babel fish in Douglas Adams’s The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, which you can put in your ear and then comprehend what any creature in the universe is saying — a miraculous promotion of pure understanding which has been the cause of more and bloodier wars than anything else.

This article contains spoilers for "Star Wars: Skeleton Crew" episode 7, "We're Gonna Be In So Much Trouble."
"Skeleton Crew" has been the refreshing, wonderfully family-friendly gift that keeps on giving, and this week was no exception. After paying tribute to the likes of "Pirates of the Caribbean" and "The Goonies" last week, episode 7, titled "We're Gonna Be In So Much Trouble," has featured yet another treasure hidden away via an exciting "Sherlock Holmes" cameo.
When the show's young heroes and Jod (Jude Law) land back on At-Attin, the former's parents are seen being briefly held by safety droids before an announcement is made to them and the rest of the planet's locals. The voice belongs to the unseen "Supervisor," the presumed head of At-Attin's mint reserve operation. He's polite, direct, and charmingly British -- and precisely what you've come to expect from none other than comedian, writer, and actor Stephen Fry.

Disney can often attract big names to appear in their animated movies, even if they are only offering a minor role. This means that some A-list actors and Oscar-winners have obscure roles in Disney movies that fans could easily miss. While the stars behind the biggest characters are usually publicized, like Dwayne Johnson in Moana and Robin Williams in Aladdin, it can be hard to recognize other actors based solely on their voices.
Disney's old classics generally don't have many recognizable names, because Hollywood's brightest stars weren't interested in animation and studios preferred dedicated voice actors anyway. The trend of casting high-profile actors in animated movies is a relatively recent one, starting in the 1990s and accelerating throughout the 21st century. These days, it's common for an animated movie's cast to be filled with A-list talent, but many of these actors can go unnoticed.

Movie characters often wear absurd and humorous costumes to attend parties, and in some cases these looks can become more iconic than their everyday clothes. Not all movies can pull off a funny costume, since the jokes have to work in-universe and on-screen. This strips away the layer of ironic detachment that many comedies use, in which the characters don't know that what they're doing is funny.
Funny movie costumes mostly show up in comedies, since there aren't many dramas which can spend time on a joke or a costume party. However, it's often the case that these are exactly the types of movies which provide the best opportunities for a funny costume, because audiences aren't expecting it, so it has even more of an impact. Some surprisingly emotional dramas have had funny character costumes just like comedies.

Many classic sci-fi books have been turned into movies, but some incredible titles are yet to be adapted for the screen. Several of the best epic sci-fi movies of all time are based on legendary pieces of literature, so its surprising that some of the most notable novels from the genre havent received their own film yet. These titles are groundbreaking and redefine science fiction in massive ways, and they absolutely deserve to be viewed in the cinematic format.
A lot of these ambitious sci-fi books are remembered across the ages because of their themes, imagery, and characters. By traveling through time, space, or both, readers also find that these sci-fi books are more fiction than science, too. However, this isnt a bad thing, as the genre is supposed to be imaginative and complex, which makes these classic novels perfect movie candidates as well.

The eponymous star of Mr. Bean has always been considered quirky, but one theory suggests that Rowan Atkinson's character may literally be out of this world. Though Atkinson hated playing Mr. Bean, the character's idiosyncratic personality was so popular that Mr. Bean inspired two feature films and an animated series. Mr. Bean is a walking disaster zone, who manages to turn the simplest everyday tasks into a total mess. However, this incompetence has led many to conclude that Mr. Bean is not just unfamiliar with day-to-day life he is actually an alien.
The theory that Mr. Bean is an alien was convincing, with Atkinson admitting to The Buffalo News that "he has a slightly alien aspect to him." These inhuman quirks are explored throughout the franchise. When done right, sci-fi and comedy can be a fantastic genre pairing, fusing intriguing, mind-bending concepts with riotous humor. Movies like Back to the Future, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, and Idiocracy do it fantastically well. Sci-fi comedy TV shows are a little less common, and probably vary more in their quality, but there are still plenty of them for fans to dive into.

Start with softer science fiction novels that blend genres to ease into the intense and sometimes upsetting aspects of the genre. Novels like "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" combine humor and satire to poke fun at unrealistic sci-fi tropes, making the genre more accessible. Books like "Children of Time" and "Severance" incorporate deeper themes while maintaining engaging storytelling to attract hesitant readers.
Sci-fi can be an intimidating genre, as some sci-fi books are more science than fiction, making it difficult for audiences to understand the intricate science and mathematics within the story. Of course, if the work is well-written, it should be able to communicate any thought to a variety of audiences. However, sometimes, it can be beneficial to start with books that incorporate the softer side of science fiction. Providing elements of other genres and crafting a compelling story that relates to all facets of humanity can open up sci-fi to anyone.

John Malkovich has joined Marvel’s “The Fantastic Four” in an undisclosed role, Variety has confirmed. The veteran actor joins Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Marvel’s First Family, along with Julia Garner as Shalla-Bal, a version of the Silver Surfer, and Paul Walter Hauser.
Malkovich has brought his uniquely off-kilter acting style to bear in a prolific career spanning costume drama (like 1988’s “Dangerous Liasons”), studio thrillers (1993’s “In the Line of Fire”), cutting edge indies (1999’s “Being John Malkovich”), wackadoo sci-fi comedies (2005’s “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy”) and animated family films (2014’s “Penguins of Madagascar”). Most recently, he has appeared in the Apple TV+ series “The New Look” and the Netflix series “Ripley.”

Hollywood has looked to a range of existing media for inspiration from the beginning of the film industry, with novels serving as the basis for some excellent movies, especially science fiction. Ranging from cult classics released decades before their film to instant hits that grabbed the attention of the film industry, these are some of the best movies ever made. These stories can be anything from a big-budget epic to an exploration of philosophy and ideology.
Science fiction stands out as one of cinema's most imaginative and creative genres, and this is even more the case with novels, where writers can explore ideas without the constraints of a film budget. While this does make some stories difficult to adapt to other mediums, the successful films show it's worth the struggle. While some of sci-fi's more muted stories can be fun, it's the epic, big-budget stories that often maintain fan interest the most.

The 90s has a not-entirely unearned reputation as a bit of a dead zone for television sci-fi outside of the USA – especially in the UK. However, the truth is that the 90s was actually something of a golden age. It’s just that in Britain, this golden age happened exclusively between 3:25 pm, when everyone got off school, and 5:30 pm, when everyone watched Neighbours. These homegrown and Australian shows ran the entire gamut of what science fiction could do, from hilarity to terror.
The budgets were low, the special effects had a short shelf life and most of them are now almost impossible to find outside of the memories of some nostalgic Millennials, but they introduced an entire generation to the sci-fi genre, as well as to some banging theme tunes.

We Were the Lucky Ones stars Joey King from The Kissing Booth films alongside Percy Jackson‘s Logan Lerman, and debuts on March 28.

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy has never been contained to just one medium of artistic expression. First appearing as a radio show in 1978, the humorous sci-fi worlds that creator Douglas Adams concocted would eventually transition over into novels in 1979. From there, Guide to the Galaxy would spawn endless sequels and further adaptations, such as stage show recreations and even a 1981 BBC TV show. The biggest of these adaptations, though, was a 2005 motion picture from director Garth Jennings entitled (appropriately enough) The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Debuting in theaters courtesy of Disney’s Touchstone Pictures division, the feature wasn’t a massive box office hit, but its very existence solidified the enduring appeal of its source material.

Star Trek is one of best and most well-known science fiction franchises of all time, so it’s no surprise that it’s had a huge influence on the rest of the genre. From other space-faring adventures to distant worlds to straight up parodies of the Enterprise and its crew, there are plenty of shows and movies that owe a bit to Gene Roddenberry‘s creation.
This is not a list of every single show or film that has been inspired by Star Trek because that list would cover a pretty good proportion of sci-fi on screen since 1966. But if you want to watch something Star Trek-adjacent, we’ve picked out 10 of our favorite shows and movies that were, to a greater or lesser degree, inspired by Star Trek.

Back in 1998, BBC 2 ran a Red Dwarf Night featuring interviews with celebrity fans, one of whom was Patrick Stewart.

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy movie had potential for a franchise but failed due to poor critical reception and competition from Star Wars Episode III. The Golden Compass faced objections from religious organizations and was ultimately canceled due to financial concerns during the global recession. The Last Airbender suffered from disrespecting the source material, while The Green Lantern lacked the magic of the comics and received negative reviews, leading to both franchises being abandoned.
Today, in the modern movie landscape, it seems like everything is part of a franchise. With such an influx of superhero films, cinematic universes, and interconnected storytelling, studios are feeling the pressure to ensure that every new IP can be part of a long-running ongoing series. A micro-budget and scrappy energy add charm to this quirky sci-fi tale in which unremarkable people watch over their charges
Peter (Scott Haran) is a former child chess prodigy who these days excels at nothing much in particular, except perhaps his ability to blend into the background. A birthday card at his office is handed to him to sign – for his own birthday. None of his colleagues know who he is, and the card is crammed with polite, anodyne messages. But he discovers that there’s one arena in which his anonymity might be a boon rather than a liability: he is recruited into the world of Bystanding, a parallel universe filled with invisible guardian types whose job is to imperceptibly guide or nudge their charges into making better life choices. They are all, in their own ways, as unremarkable as Peter, hence their selection for bystander duty.

Isaac Asimov is considered one of the biggest science fiction minds of the 20th century, along with authors like Robert A. Heinlein and Arthur C. Clarke. He wrote hundreds of books, including his highly influential "Robot" and "Foundation" series. These shaped many of the sci-fi stories of today, establishing familiar tropes like the galactic empire, and robots being programmed to be unable to harm humans.
Books like "Dune" and "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" owe a lot to Asimov, as do movies like "Star Wars." And yet, Asimov wasn't exactly the biggest sci-fi fan out there, at least not in TV and film. In an interview with the L.A. Times in 1988, Asimov simply described the "Star Trek" films, "Planet of the Apes" and "Back to the Future" as "decent." Artificial Intelligence is a big sticking point in the current Hollywood strikes. Author and actor Stephen Fry understands why, as he’s been victimized by an AI version of his voice being used in a documentary without his participation.
Speaking at the CogX Festival in London on Thursday, Fry played a clip of an AI system mimicking his voice to narrate a historical documentary.
“I said not one word of that—it was a machine. Yes, it shocked me,” he said. “They used my reading of the seven volumes of the Harry Potter books, and from that dataset an AI of my voice was created and it made that new narration.”
Fry was the narrator on the Harry Potter books in the UK.

Gary Larson's The Far Side is known for its surreal humor and morbid perspective, including several comics where no human is left standing. Whether taken out by aliens, animals, or their own hubris, humans are just another animal trying to get by in an often hostile world. The people of The Far Side are prone to apocalyptic levels of foolishness, often reflecting the (hopefully) less lethal foibles of the strip's millions of fans.
Here are the 10 best The Far Side comics where - for a truly impressive variety of reasons - no human makes it out alive. Some are iconic, some underappreciated, but in each case, Larson leaves no room for doubt that his human characters aren't long for this world.

There were a lot of things about "Star Wars: Episode VI -- The Return of the Jedi" that gave fans closure for the trilogy. The second Death Star was blown up. The Emperor (Ian McDiarmid) was defeated. Han Solo (Harrison Ford) and Leia Organa (Carrie Fisher) finally admitted their feelings and kissed. We also found out that Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) and Leia were siblings and saw Darth Vader redeemed and unmasked before his death. That last one might have been wonderful for fans, but for David Prowse, who did all the physical work for the role (with the voice of James Earl Jones replacing his own), it was a disappointment.
That is according to an interview with Prowse with Rock Cellar Magazine in 2012. The actor, who passed away at the age of 85 in 2020, had been a bodybuilder, helped train Christopher Reeve for his 1978 "Superman" role, and appeared in projects like "A Clockwork Orange,...

Zooey Deschanel has been in the public eye for nearly three decades, and she's accomplished quite a bit in her lifetime. She made her film debut in the 1999 film "Mumford," but arguably became well-known after starring in the beloved 2003 Christmas flick "Elf." Following her success from "Elf," Deschanel appeared in a number of popular movies throughout the remainder of the 2000s, including "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy," "Yes Man," and the indie rom-com "500 Days of Summer" alongside Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
Film is not the only place Deschanel is popular, however. She is also well-known for her role as Jessica Day in the sitcom "New Girl" and for being one half of the music duo She & Him. Currently, she hosts a cooking show on Max called "What Am I Eating?" and stars as Kelly in the third season of AppleTV+'s "Physical."
