Garth Craven, the British-born sound and film editor and second-unit director whose credits included six Sam Peckinpah features, as well as Turner and Hooch, My Best Friend’s Wedding and Legally Blonde, has died. He was 84.

A resident of Malibu, Craven died May 20 after he suffered a medical emergency while flying back to Los Angeles from a safari in Namibia, his daughter, Willow Kalatchi, told The Hollywood Reporter.

Craven collaborated with the maverick director Peckinpah on Straw Dogs (1971), The Getaway (1972), Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid (1973), Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia (1974), The Killer Elite (1975) and Convoy (1978).

He worked with fellow editor Roger Spottiswoode on the first three of those films, and when Spottiswoode graduated to director, they partnered on the features Shoot to Kill (1988), Turner and Hooch (1989) and Air America (1990) and on two HBO telefilms: 1989’s Third Degree Burn and 1993’s And the Band Played On.

Octavia Spencer is offering support to her good friend Sandra Bullock following the death of her longtime partner, Bryan Randall.

Spencer paid tribute to Randall — who died over the weekend following a private three-year battle with Als — in an Instagram post Tuesday. He was 57.

“My heart is broken for Sandy and Bryan. Sandy lost her soulmate and the world lost a talented, handsome, all around good guy!” Spencer captioned a split image of the couple. “My prayers and condolences to their families. Rip Bryan Randall.”

Summer isn’t over yet but HBO and its streaming arm Max are already moving on to fall. With its list of new releases for August 2023, Max is focusing on football! The American kind, mind you, not the actually footy kind.

August 2023 sees the release of two major football documentaries on HBO and Max. The first is the premiere of Hard Knocks on Aug. 10. The new season of long-running NFL training camp docuseries will center on the New York Jets, new employers of legendary quarterback Aaron Rodgers. On Aug. 23, Max will air the aptly named Bs High. The doc tells the stranger-than-fiction story of high school football team Bishop Sycamore, which pulled off one of the more notable sports scams you’re likely to ever hear about.

Not of the football variety but in keeping with the North American sports theme will be season 2 of Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty on Aug.

Actor Treat Williams, whose filmography included movies like Things To Do In Denver When You're Dead and Prince of the City, tragically passed away in a motorcycle accident at the age of 71. The Connecticut-born actor began his career on stage, playing Danny Zuko in Grease from 1972-1980. He made his feature film debut in the 1975 neo-noir thriller Deadly Hero, which also starred Don Murray and James Earl Jones. His breakout role came in the 1979 movie Hair, which earned him a Golden Globe Award nomination and launched a steady career in film and TV that spanned several decades.

According to reports from The Wrap, the prolific actor was killed in a road traffic collision when his motorcycle was hit by a car while riding it. The news was confirmed by the actor's agent Barry McPherson, and Williams' family released a statement asking people to "...respect our privacy as we deal with our grief.

While October usually signals the arrival of all sorts of spooky, creepy, scary, and otherwise appropriately Halloween-themed films to both theaters and streaming services, this month’s batch of new titles on Netflix offers up a delightfully wide variety of choices that aren’t all tied to the year’s primary celebration of fear. Ratings for the 2015 BAFTA Film Awards were up on last year, according to overnight figures for Sunday (February 8).

Stephen Fry's hosting of the annual event attracted 4.91 million (24.1%) at 9pm on BBC One, up from last year's 4.56m, but down on 2013's 5.38m.

Earlier, Countryfile appealed to 7.6m (33.7%) at 7pm, before Call The Midwife remained top of the ratings with 8.81m (33.4%) at 8pm.

BBC Two's Top Gear with Formula 1 driver Daniel Ricciardo entertained 5.36m (20.3%) at 8pm, while Dragon's Den attracted 2.39m (10.2%) at 9pm. Match of the Day 2 brought in 1.77m (11.6%) at 10pm.

Over on ITV, Stephen Mulhern's Get Your Act Together aired to 1.73m (7.4%) at 7pm (107k/0.4% on +1).

All Star Family Fortunes dipped to 2.25m (8.5%) at 8.15pm (153k/0.7%), while Mr Selfridge added around 700,000 viewers to hit 3.88m (16.5%) at 9pm (143k/0.8%).

So, while the ending to Gravity left little room for a sequel, it should come as no surprise that 20th Century Fox is interested in pursuing a follow-up to The Heat.

Bullock previously expressed her reluctance to reprise the role of Special Agent Sarah Ashburn in a second installment, likely due to her dubious track record with sequels (see: Speed 2: Cruise Control and Miss Congeniality 2: Armed and Fabulous).
