In the "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "The Offspring", the android Data (Brent Spiner) has decided that he would like to be a father. Using his own android body as a template, he builds an android child in a positronic lab, naming the new being Lal. At first, Lal (Leonard Crofoot) is a somewhat shapeless being with sharp, metallic features. Data feels that Lal should be able to choose their own gender and appearance. Lal decides to be a young woman (Hallie Todd). The bulk of the episode involves Data, with his own limited understand of human interaction, teaching Lal everything he knows. When Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart) questions the ethics of an artificial life form like Data creating another without permission, Data easily defends himself. No one else on the Enterprise requires permission to reproduce, so why should he?

The following contains major spoilers for Chicago Pd Season 12, Episode 10, "Zoe," which debuted Wednesday, Jan. 22 on NBC. It also contains discussion of violence toward children.
Chicago Pd Season 12, Episode 10, "Zoe" is a great episode for Adam Ruzek and actor Patrick John Flueger. It's an installment that reminds the audience how far Ruzek has come from the upstart rookie he was in Season 1, and showcases how much Flueger has grown as an actor, too. But beyond that, the episode itself is lacking.
"Zoe" refers to the eight-year-old girl Ruzek discovers in the home where her mother and sister have been murdered. The whole story revolves around who Zoe actually is -- that's not her real name -- and if the police can catch her father,...

It hardly needs mentioning, but not all science fiction is created equal. Even as a term, it’s difficult to pinpoint exactly what constitutes sci-fi, especially in a medium like TV that can change so much from week to week or season to season. So when we took stock of the best TV shows from the past two decades, we tried to take a hard line separating the sci-fi from the fantasy.
That’s not to say that a few of the shows might have an odd sword or two, but most of what we tried to single out here imagines a world markedly different from our own. Some take place in reimagined futures, while others take a sharper focus on the present with some key, otherworldly changes.

Chicago Pd has featured an abundance of characters, and many of the actors and actresses who play them are familiar faces. Series mainstays and those with much briefer runs alike have typically starred in at least one other TV show or movie fans are likely to have seen. Some of them have careers dating back decades, while others are best known for more modern work.
By sheer coincidence, many actors involved with the franchise are well-known for featuring in fantasy, sci-fi, and horror works. The stars of Chicago Pd have had major roles in franchises like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and the Arrowverse, and in movies like Monkey Shines. These performances are all excellent, and show the range of the long-running police procedural's cast.

Stephen King is arguably the most celebrated horror writer of all time. He's also an extremely prolific author whose work has been turned into countless movies and TV shows — many of which fail, but some of which are stunningly great. When you think of Stephen King, there are works that immediately jump to mind, like "The Shining," "Carrie," or maybe even "The Shawshank Redemption." Something like "The Dead Zone," on the other hand, tends to be overlooked, which is too bad. King's story centers on Johnny Smith, a man who gets into a car accident and wakes up from a coma five years later, now armed with the power to see into the future and past by touching people or items. Beyond that, though, the man's life is a mess; his one true love has moved on and started a family with someone else, and he keeps having visions of...

Spoiler shields up! This article discusses plot details from the latest episode of "Star Trek: Lower Decks."
If "Star Trek: Lower Decks" must end with its fifth and final season (which /Film's Jacob Hall reviewed here), it might as well go out swinging for the fences. That seems to have been the approach from creator/showrunner Mike McMahan and the writing team as a whole so far in this series, in all fairness, but season 5, episode 6 takes this Mo to even greater heights. Titled "Of Gods and Angles," the story sees the crew of the USS Cerritos having to don their diplomacy hats in order to mediate between two disgruntled factions of photon-based lifeforms: alien races made up of cubes and spheres, hilariously enough. Yet, as ridiculous and silly as this gets, the main plot doesn't even take the title for the nerdiest moment of the episode. No, that honor...

Billy Campbell portrayed Captain Thadiun Okona in one episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation, but has returned to the franchise in animated form. Billy Campbell began acting in the mid-1980s, landing his first significant television role on Dynasty in 1984. Campbell went on to costar as Detective Joey Indelli in Crime Story before appearing in Star Trek: The Next Generation season 2, episode 4, "The Outrageous Okona." Campbell landed the leading role in Disney's The Rocketeer in 1991 and also portrayed a vampire hunter in Bram Stoker's Dracula in 1992.
Billy Campbell continued to appear in popular films and television shows throughout the 1990s and beyond. From 1999 to 2002, Campbell starred alongside Sela Ward in the Emmy-winning Once and Again. Campbell also appeared in episodes of Law & Order: Svu and The Oc, and had a regular role on The 4400. Campbell portrayed Darren Richmond in The Killing, Dr. Alan Farragut in Helix, and John Cardinal in Cardinal.

Incoming Blade star Mahershala Ali should be an old hand at waiting a long time for his movies to see the light of day, as his first movie is only now being seen 25 years after filming wrapped. Taste the Revolution was filmed back in 2001, and predates all the movies and TV shows that Ali has since become known for, but the film was never released and has only now made its premiere at the New Orleans Film Festival.
Taste the Revolution is a mockumentary movie that follows two filmmakers at the Chaos World Summit. The event is a gathering of mostly college students who want to counter generational apathy through free food, booze, and radical politics. As can be seen in the first trailer released for the movie, Alis event organizer Laslow rallies up the crowds with powerful speeches, but it doesnt take long for thing to descend intowell, chaos.

Spoiler Warning: This story discusses plot details for “Woman of the Hour,” now streaming on Netflix.
Netflix’s “Woman of the Hour” marks Anna Kendrick’s directorial debut, but that was not the movie’s only breakthrough performance. Of all the featured victims, one young girl stands out in the ripped-from-the-headlines plot: Amy, a runaway teen, survived her encounter with the serial killer Rodney Alcala. Amid his murder spree, he was a contestant on “The Dating Game” in the 1970s.
Amy is played by Autumn Best, who makes her film debut with the pivotal role. She’s an alum of the CW series “The 4400,” but, believe it or not, she went into her audition with little to no hope of landing the part.

Mahershala Ali's Blade film might be wallowing deeper into development hell, but it isn't his longest-gestating project, well, at least for now. That title belongs to another obscure project, Taste the Revolution, which took 25 years to complete. Before breaking through with his role as Richard Tyler in the science fiction series The 4400, Ali got his first film role in Taste the Revolution, which completed filming in 2001 but has never seen the light of day. However, that is about to change as we now have a first look at the movie 25 years after filming wrapped. Ahead of its premiere at the New Orleans Film Festival this October, a trailer for the film has been released seeing Ali in the lead as a passionate revolutionary leader, Mac Laslow.

The I Know What You Did Last Summer reboot cast is coming together in a promising way. We just learned that Golden Globe Award nominee Billy Campbell has joined the cast in an undisclosed role. I wonder who he could be playing in the slasher.
Campbell joins a growing list of actors who have already been announced to be in the cast, such as Madelyn Cline, Sarah Pidgeon, Tyriq Withers, and Jonah Haur-King.
Freddie Prinze Jr. was announced recently to have officially joined the cast, reprising his role of Ray Bronson from the original film and its 1998 sequel. Jennifer Love Hewitt and Brandy Norwood are also in talks to return in their roles as Julie James and Karla Wilson.
Additionally, Bodies Bodies Bodies star Chase Sui Wonders is currently in discussions about joining the cast of the upcoming Sony movie. However, who she will be portraying in the film is unknown.

Marvel Studios' upcoming superhero flick "Thunderbolts*" is slated to be the 36th feature film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and will assemble six ancillary characters culled from previous MCU movies and TV shows, making them into a ragtag fighting force. On the team are the Red Guardian, Yelena Belova, and Taskmaster from "Black Widow," the Winter Soldier and U.S. Agent (Sebastian Stan and Wyatt Russell) from "The Falcon and the Winter Soldier," and Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen) from "Ant-Man and the Wasp." These characters previously served as low-level villains or antagonists, but are now redeeming themselves as hunted antiheroes.
The first full trailer for "Thunderbolts*" was released on September 23, 2024, and it displays the requisite action that the genre demands, as well as the notable character reveals that the MCU is known for. The characters are also well-equipped with quips, wielding bathos like a cudgel. A car is shot during an intense chase sequence,...

Ive always loved Firefly and felt that it deserved a much longer run, but this detail about the shows iconic cast is a reminder that this short-lived sci-fi western series had so much wasted potential. Joss Whedon took Gene Roddenberrys famous original pitch for Star Trek Wagon Train to the stars to its literal conclusion with Fireflys tale of gunslingers traversing the final frontier. Firefly ran for just one season, consisting of 14 episodes, back in 2002, and its frequently included on lists of TV shows that were canceled much too soon.
Firefly had limitless potential, and its one and only season just scratched the surface of that potential. It had a juicy premise, bringing the pioneer culture of the Old West to a dystopian future in need of a new world order, and it had an ensemble of colorful characters whose stories had only just gotten started when the show was axed by Fox.

I know it doesn’t feel like 2004 was 20 years ago, but it was, which means many great TV shows just turned 20 years old.
Seriously, 2004 is a sneaky good year for new TV premieres. Most of the titles on this list of good TV shows turning 20 years old in 2024 were broadcast hits. The cable networks had a decent market share in the early 2000s, but we’re still a decade before the streaming industry changed the TV game.
At this point in TV history, we’re still seven years before the Game of Thrones premiere. Remember that, please!
Let’s get the list started with the best show of 2004!

Movie superheroes are intrinsically tied to comic books. The language, the shape of the narrative arcs and the visuals are nearly always either inspired by or reacting against the genre as established in four colours. Even supposedly grounded and gritty takes like M Night Shyamalan’s Unbreakable use Bruce Willis’s poncho to signify a cape, with every shot framed to look like a comic book panel.
The most faithful screen realization of that imagery is usually the lavish CGI cinema spectacle, with TV all too often seen as its poor relation. The truth is, TV superheroism is now a genre all of its own, with its own tropes, rules and language that have for the most part left the comics far behind.

The Jackson 5 have found their harmony once again for the upcoming biopic “Michael” from director Antoine Fuqua and Oscar-winning producer Graham King.
After a worldwide search led filmmakers to cast Jackson’s nephew, Jaafar Jackson, as the King of Pop, with 9-year-old Juliano Krue Valdi as the younger Michael, fans have been eagerly waiting to see who would round out the rest of the Jackson family.
The film, which is scheduled to hit theaters on April 18, 2025, is currently in production. Oscar-nominee Colman Domingo assumes the role of family patriarch Joe Jackson with Nia Long as mother Katherine Jackson, plus Miles Teller as lawyer John Branca.
Now, the eight actors who will portray Jackson’s four brothers — who come together to form the massively popular singing group the Jackson 5 — have been revealed: Jamal R. Henderson plays Jermaine Jackson in the film’s later years, while Jayden Harville plays the younger version.

The following contains spoilers from Chicago Pd Season 11, Episode 2, "Retread," which premiered Wednesday, January 24 on NBC.
After a controversial season premiere, Chicago Pd returns to familiar territory in Season 11's second episode -- but it might be too familiar for longtime fans of the NBC procedural. Season 11, Episode 2, "Retread" gives the update on Adam Ruzek that fans were wanting, yet the Ruzek story takes his character down a path he's walked before. It also doesn't offer any more of an idea as to where the Intelligence Unit itself will be headed in a strike-shortened season.
Ruzek ended Season 10 having been shot and fighting to survive. Thus, some One Chicago fans were surprised when the Season 11 opener "Unpacking" only offered a brief scene of his preparing to get back on the job, and instead focused on Hailey Upton's ongoing internal struggle. The choice made sense logistically given that actor Tracy Spiridakos...

Sci-fi shows often build passionate fanbases but are frequently canceled too soon, despite their potential to create expansive worlds and storylines. Space: Above and Beyond, Firefly, Sense8, Terra Nova, Dollhouse, Dirk Gently, Almost Human, Caprica, Journeyman, and The 4400 are all examples of sci-fi shows that were canceled before they could fully explore their narratives and resolve their storylines. These canceled shows had intriguing concepts, talented casts, and loyal fans, but ultimately succumbed to the high production costs and low viewing figures that often plague sci-fi television.
Sci-fi TV shows often build incredibly dedicated fanbases, but seem to frequently get canceled too soon. It makes sense considering sci-fi is frequently a genre that inherently costs more to make. Often depicting elaborate future worlds and technologies, sci-fi shows have higher demands than a standard drama or sitcom.

Exclusive: USA Network’s “blue sky” series of the 2000s and early 2010s are having a moment this year between Suits‘ blockbuster run on Netflix, which broke streaming records and led to a potential offshoot series at NBC, and the Monk reunion movie, which premieres today on Peacock and already is getting awards recognition.

Mahershala Ali's casting as Blade in the Marvel Studios film is a bit beneath him, considering his high-caliber acting skills and the uncertainties surrounding the future of the Marvel Universe. Ali has a proven track record in the entertainment industry, with two Oscars under his belt and notable roles in shows like Luke Cage and True Detective, showcasing his diverse range as an actor. The revival of Blade in the MCU seems like a last-ditch effort to create hype, and Ali deserves the opportunity to create a new character rather than being confined to a role already portrayed by Wesley Snipes.
Mahershala Ali is set to play the titular vampire hunter in Marvel Studios' Blade, which was originally set to come out this month but has now been delayed until February 2025. That is a long time for an actor to wait to film a role. That being said, Ali...

It lasted only one season, but fans still mourn the demise of the sci-fi/western Firefly. As much as we love watching (and rewatching) the series, sometimes it's not enough.
Are you longing for a little more Captain Tight Pants? Want to see Zoe quietly kick some adversary's butt? Wishing you could revisit the Hero of Canton?
Well, we can't bring back Firefly -- oh, how we wish we could! -- but we can tell you where you can tune in to see the cast now.
If you can't get enough of the crew of the Serenity, read on to find out where you can see them now.
Ron Glass - Shepherd Derrial Book
Shepherd Book was the preacher with a cryptic past who boards the Serenity and befriends its crew. We loved Book's warmth and acceptance of his other crew members while still being able to hold onto his faith.

“The Other Black Girl” is a rarity for Black women in scripted television. The latest series from Onyx Collective to premiere on Hulu, this psychological thriller and satire tinged with horror offers a rare and provocative look into the challenges facing Black women within the larger white society, while also exploring their internal tensions through a mainstream premise.
Adapted from the 2021 book of the same name from Zakiya Dalila Harris, the show centers two Black women working in book publishing, widely acknowledged as one of the least diverse industries in the country. Nella Rogers (Sinclair Daniel) is a promising young employee at Wagner Books, with eyes on becoming an impactful editor like her idol Kendra Rae Phillips, the publisher’s first and only Black editor to date, did back in the early 1980s. Being the only Black woman at the company can be isolating, so it’s only natural that...

For six seasons, J. J. Abrams' Lost captivated audiences with its intense mysteries and subtle sci-fi aspects, and since the series' initial release, other television shows have tried hard to recreate that iconic magic. On the surface, Lost follows a group of people who endure a plane crash that lands them on a lush and strange island. More than that, the show includes shocking secrets, twists, and mysteries that grip audiences from start to finish.
When Lost first premiered on ABC in 2004, a new wave of science fiction and mystery shows began to follow in its footsteps. These series all tried to evoke the same ambiance that Lost had, either by replicating the concept of people stuck in a remote place or including an atmosphere that is far more sinister and paranormal than it seems. Even after Lost concluded in 2010, these shows have cropped up often, joining the running for being "the new Lost.

Niecy Nash-Betts has addressed the up-in-the-air renewal status of The Rookie: Feds and its Season 2 assignment.
"I don't know the fate of that show," Nash-Betts told TVLine, "but I do know that in the same article I read that said that it was on the bubble, it also said that I was one of the most sought-after actresses at this time. So we'll see. But I love my job at Rookie: Feds. I love the people that I work with, so being able to do another season of it would be like heaven to me."

It used to be that TV shows wrapped up the story in a single episode, and repeated the process next week. Then, shows started having season-long story arcs, which were much more engaging for audiences. Unfortunately, this format usually left a big cliffhanger at the end of the season, and frequently the shows were canceled, leaving things unresolved.

Shows get canned because they have low ratings, but often, especially with sci-fi, they have dedicated fans who are emotionally invested in the series. Occasionally, as was the case with Manifest, a canceled show will get picked up by a streaming service and offer some resolution, but that is an outlier. Sadly, many great sci-fi shows have been axed with big meaty cliffhangers looming.

Bruce Miller has stepped down from his post as showrunner of the “The Handmaid’s Tale,” passing his duties on the sixth and final season to Eric Tuchman and Yahlin Chang, who already served as writers and executive producers.
Miller has showrun the Hulu drama since its premiere in 2017. He will remain on staff as a writer and executive producer on Season 6 while moving on to focus on developing a screen adaptation “The Testaments,” the “Handmaid’s Tale” sequel that original author Margaret Atwood wrote in 2019.

For the first time in 34 years, Billy Campbell reprises his role as Thadiun Okona in Star Trek: Prodigy, which he originally played in the Star Trek: The Next Generation season 2 episode, "The Outrageous Okona."
Although Okona was seen in a Star Trek: Lower Decks season 2 cameo, Campbell actually voices the lovable space rogue once more in Star Trek: Prodigy. Okona finds himself on the run with the young teenage heroes of the USS Protostar as they're pursued by Vice Admiral Kathryn Janeway.

When you think of the shows that have aired on The CW, you likely think of Supernatural, The Flash, Riverdale, The Vampire Diaries, and more, all shows which seemed aimed at a teenage/twenty-something audience. It's official. The CW, as we know it, is over.
After months of speculation about the future of the young-skewing network, we finally have some clarity.
Nexstar Media Group revealed Monday that it will acquire a 75 percent ownership stake in the network.
Warner Bros. Discovery and Paramount Global will each keep a 12.5 percent minority stake.
The move means that both companies will continue making select programming for the network.
However, Nexstar will also be looking to other companies for content, meaning that there will likely be some huge changes to the slate as a whole.
“Our acquisition of The CW is strategically and operationally compelling, as it will enable us to leverage our operational experience to improve the network’s performance through our management of this powerful national platform,” Nexstar CEO Perry Sook said in a statement.

“Roswell, New Mexico” returns for its final season premiere on Monday night, and it’s bringing an old friend back into the fold — at least temporarily. Max Evans’ old partner and friend Jenna Cameron is back, and she needs his help solving what very well may be a crime committed by aliens.
Of course, this time around, Jenna Cameron (Riley Voelkel) is actually Agent Cameron, having taken a job with the FBI. But to be fair, she’s not the only one with a new title. Max (Nathan Dean Parsons) has one too; he’s currently the sheriff of Roswell (even if only in the interim). Their banter is as strong as ever, as Jenna needles Max by informing him that she only took the job “so I could outrank you, Evans.”
Jokes aside, there is a reason that Max was the one called in to help solve a bank...

The CW is gearing up for some big change as a bulk of its slate was canceled much to fans’ shock and network boss Mark Pedowitz is giving context for the reasoning behind the surprising move. Among some of the casualties of the cancellation roundup include Arrowverse favorites Batwoman and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow as well as Charmed, Dynasty, 4400, In the Dark, Legacies, Naomi, and Roswell, New Mexico. And it was officially announced Thursday that Riverdale would come to an end after its upcoming seventh season. While Riverdale will have time to plot out its closing episode, some of the other favorites that met their abrupt ends with the mass series axing didn’t quite have that chance, but Pedowitz shared that it wasn’t the network’s intention to leave fans high and dry. It’s a “time of transition” for The CW: Boss Mark Pedowitz addressed the “shock” of cancellations that came this season, which included series such as DC’s Legends of Tomorrow and Legacies, and revealed that he encouraged his creators to approach their season finales as if they might be series finales.
“I realize the pattern was different from what we have done in years past so I can see why it has come as a bit of a shock to you and the fans. None of these were easy decisions, we had long conversations with our studios and parent companies and everyone recognized this was a time of transition for The CW. Unfortunately, some difficult financial and strategic decisions needed to be made at every level and despite some rumors out there, content was never a factor in deciding not to move forward with the shows,” he said on The CW’s Pre-Upfronts call.

The residents of Riverdale are set to say goodbye as The CW has announced that the popular drama series will end its run with the upcoming seventh season. Riverdale was renewed back in March, alongside fellow CW dramas The Flash, All American, Superman & Lois, Walker, Kung Fu, and Nancy Drew. The Archie Comics series is currently airing its sixth season on Sunday nights, averaging a total of 560,000 viewers with Live+7 DVR playback included. The cancellation news came as part of The CW’s 2022 fall schedule release, which confirmed the seventh and final season will debut at midseason in 2023. Riverdale now joins its fellow network shows Dynasty, Charmed, Naomi, 4400, In the Dark, and Roswell, New Mexico, all of which were axed last week. Riverdale was developed by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and based on the characters from Archie Comics. The show follows a group of teenagers trying to unravel the evils lurking within this seemingly innocent town.
