In Hollywood, a lot of directors have built their careers on their twist endings, from M. Night Shyamalan's The Sixth Sense to Bryan Singer's The Usual Suspects. These endings can make the audience leave the movie still thinking about its themes and message years after seeing it. Unfortunately, not every movie achieves this, and there's no shortage of criticism of directors who try too hard to be subversive, only to undermine their film.

A good twist should compel the viewer to immediately want to revisit the story to pick up on small details and clues as they go. For a variety of reasons, some movies simply aren't good enough to warrant that second viewing. Sometimes, it's the twist itself that hurts the film, while others are just too weak for another watch regardless of how good the twist is. From empty hotel lobbies to dreamscapes comprised of infinitely expanding pools, the rise of liminal horror continues to be one of the most fascinating genre trends in recent memory. However, there’s a specific kind of transitional space that I rarely see get the same attention as some other meme-heavy settings, and that would be the secluded roadside locations that you often see when travelling between one city and another.

Lonely roadside diners, gas stations and long stretches of empty road – it’s easy to understand why these frequently ominous sights can get the mind racing, and that’s precisely why I think they make ideal settings for a certain kind of scary story. And in honor of these chilling liminal tales, we’ve decided to come up with a list highlighting six of the best roadside horror flicks for your viewing pleasure!

There is no forgetting the putrid and almost sickly sweet smell of human death once it has become an olfactory memory. Those unfamiliar with this hyper-specific stench should count themselves lucky. However, that odor of mortality is all the characters of Reeker have to keep themselves safe. Danger lurks wherever that fetor goes. Dave Payne’s 2005 horror film introduced a unique villain named after his most notable attribute, yet by the time that cadaverous stink has been inhaled by potential victims, the chance for escape may have already expired.

Following a silly but grisly cold-open — a random family becomes a roadside picnic for The Reeker, who remains unseen early on — director and writer Payne sets up what looks to be a garden-variety slasher: one by one, young folks are murdered in gruesome fashion, somewhere out in the middle of nowhere. No doubt that pitch sounds familiar. As straightforward as the film starts out,...

"Jacob's Ladder" reveals that the terrifying visions of a Vietnam veteran are actually attempts to save his life on the battlefield. In "Dead End," a family lost on their way to a party actually died in a car crash and are unaware of their own deaths. "Reeker" surprises viewers by revealing that the college students being killed off were already dead from a car crash at the start of the film.

While it is usually a cop-out for a movie to reveal that the hero was dead all along, sometimes, this classic twist can be shockingly effective. The revelation that a story’s hero has secretly been dead for the entire plot, unbeknownst to themselves, is one of the oldest tricks in the book. The premise dates back as far as author Ambrose Bierce’s endlessly influential 1890 short story “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge.”

Were the world right, then in 1993, Addams Family Values would have got both the rich acclaim and enormous box office it merited. A deliciously playful sequel, it’s 94 minutes of tightly put together comedy, with a bunch of performers that come close to defining ‘perfectly cast’. Christina Ricci, clinging to a fence as she’s threatened with the Harmony Hut, remains a comedy highlight of 1990s cinema.

But the film didn’t really hit. As much as it was liked, its box office was less than half of the original. It was released the week before Mrs Doubtfire in the Us, and it was the latter that become the widely seen family comedy of Christmas 1993. Addams Family Values would do okay at best, but...

Horror Channel presents nine fear-filled premieres in March including the UK TV premiere of Bad Milo!, Jacob Vaughan’s laugh-out-loud comedy horror blending sharp social satire with copious amounts of slimy gore. “Reeker” is an interesting take on a slasher film. The decade of the slasher has long past so most films that take on that sub-genre are repetitions of previous movies that many of us have long watched. I was impressed that “Reeker” took a formula that has been beaten to death and added a nice twist to it.

“Reeker” centers on a bunch of young adults stranded in a desert rest stop only to be soon attacked by a mysterious creature while they are all having visions.

For the horror buff, Fall is the best time of the year. The air is crisp, the leaves are falling and a feeling of death hangs on the air. Is it just my imagination or have we been reporting on the Devon Sawa monster movie Creature of Darkness for two years now? Sure feels like it has taken its sweet time. At long last, the monster movie funded by a Powerball lottery winner (true story!) will finally begin stalking DVD shelves this April.

"Whatever happened to" Devon Sawa (Final Destination, Idle Hands, Extreme Ops) stars as a young man plagued by nightmares in which he repeatedly sees himself and his friends being slaughtered by a supernatural monster known as The Catcher. His friends, who have apparently never seen a horror movie in their lives, attempt to cure him of his recurring nightmares by taking him to a secluded forest where his dreams indicate The Catcher lurks. Guess what dream monster turns out to be very much a reality?

After the 80's passed it seemed that - for the most part - the slasher craze had finally come to a rest. Successful franchises like Halloween, Nightmare On Elm Street and Friday The 13th had been siphoned beyond emptiness and any intrigue the sub genre once offered appeared dead and buried. Then 1996 rolled around and Wes Craven, Kevin Williamson and Neve Campbell reminded us that good directing, storytelling, and acting is alive and well with the surprise hit Scream.

The next couple of years provided a massive batch of 'fresh' copycats and a handful of Scream sequels. Very few of any are remotely near noteworthy (quick nod to I Know What You Did Last Summer in order to avoid the onslaught of negative commentary from the obsessed Sarah Michelle Gellar fans out there J ), though Scream 2 remains a memorable franchise installment based solely on the unexpected axing of series favorite Randy (Jamie Kennedy) Meeks.

A film noir in 3D and Sony is releasing it straight to DVD in 2D? “Excuse me?” I hear you exclaim,”Are they out of their highly strung executive minds? What are they thinking?” More on this point anon, but now to the main feature. Thomas Jane’s directorial debut is definitely a must for fans of film noir, but I have to warn you that the plot’s not as strong as the visuals. It should stand up in 2D, the shadows will remain, but it can’t be as good as the 3D. Dark Country is a bit like a very long and wonderfully lit episode of the Twilight Zone. Stylistically it also reminded me of the desert surreal horror world of Dave Payne’s No Man’s Land: the Rise of the Reeker (2008). Wait,...

In the mini-pantheon of Asian-horror remakes, The Uninvited winds up being more welcome than last year’s underachieving triumvirate of One Missed Call, The Eye and Shutter. Well-crafted enough that it doesn’t feel like an opportunistic knockoff, it suffers less in comparison to the Korean original, A Tale Of Two Sisters, than from the fact that the story ingredients of both are familiar from numerous past genre films.

I should pause here to note that I wasn’t one of the many who admired Kim Ji-woon’s Sisters; where plenty of viewers saw a subtle suspenser that slowly but surely ratcheted up the creep factor, I saw an enervatingly paced film where not much happened—certainly not much that hadn’t been done before and better in other domestic-fear fare from Korea and Japan—and “paid off” in a show-offy, incoherent series of revelations. It's easy to become a blathering mess around Arielle Kebbel. She's gorgeous. I'll just get that out of the way. But she's not unapproachable. She's the antithesis of that. Her smile sets you at ease, corrects the fuzziness growing in your head which allows you to speak understandable sentences. Luckily, coherent words give way to a pleasant fifteen minute interview when I meet Kebbel at a Westwood hotel. It's December and she's cramming in a bit of press for her supernatural thriller The Uninvited ( review ) before Hollywood breaks for the holidays. According to Director David Payne, No Man’s Land: The Rise of the Reeker is neither a prequel, sequel, nor remake of his 2005 film Reeker, while at the same time, being all of those. If that defies logic enough for you, wait til you watch the movie! Rise of Reeker is a slasher film that barely features the slasher, and expects you to sit around listening to the illogical characters babble until someone gets stabbed. My mother always did say that patience is a virtue...but she did not sit through this movie.

Some fantastic news this evening as Lionsgate Home Entertainment announced that they plan on releasing a whopping eight high quality horror films from Ghost House Underground on DVD October 14th. According to a recent Hollywood Reporter article, Valerie Cruz who played Connie Murphy in the hit Sci-Fi Series “The Dresden Files” has officially signed on to the “Dexter” season 3 cast. Valerie Cruz will play the wife to Michael Prado (Jimmy Smits) an Assistant District Attorney. Valerie Cruz will also appear in Dave Payne’s upcoming horror film “No Man’s Land: The Rise of Reeker” starring Michael Muhney. It was announced today that Ghost House Undergbround has also acquired Dave Payne's No Man's Land: The Rise of Reeker, the sequel to Reeker, for release on DVD through Lionsgate Home Entertainment later this year. This is the sequel to the International horror thriller hit Reeker, in which a Sheriff and his son try to apprehend bank robbers on their way to Mexico only to find that they are both being stalked by a far more deadly enemy, the fire-wielding Reeker. They Shoot Horses, Don't They? is among the restored works that will be shown at the 2005 Tribeca Film Festival. The Sydney Pollack-directed 1969 classic will be shown among works Almost a Man (Un uomo a meta), Come Back Africa, Miss Else (Fraulein Else), My Sister Eileen, We Loved Each Other So Much (C'eravamo tanto amati), and a group of short independent films made by New York teens from 1964-1974. The Midnight selection will screen Japanese films Infection (Kansen) and Premonition (Yogen), Germany's Antibodies (Antikorper), and U.S. films Reeker and Modify. The Wide Angle selection will showcase 25 narratives and docus by emerging worldwide talent, and the Showcase selection will offer 24 new films and special programs from around the world that have been screened at other U.S. film festivals but have not been shown in New York.
