April showers… don’t matter if you’re sat inside watching TV. The Disney Bundle™ ensures that this is possible in perpetuity, with the entire libraries of Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN available in whichever permutation serves your lifestyle.
This spring, Disney+ continues the rollout of “Daredevil: Born Again” and soon welcomes the return of “Andor” Season 2 (and achieving the rare astrological phase in which both Marvel and Star Wars are active on the streamer). Plenty of shows and movies will also join the Hulu library; the Emmy-winning original series “The Handmaid’s Tale” returns after a three-year hiatus with its sixth and final season, and FX will premiere the limited series “Dying for Sex” starring Michelle Williams and Jenny Slate (based on the podcast from Molly Kochan and Nikki Boyer).
Top Pick: “Andor” Season 2

One of Tom Cruise's most acclaimed films lands on a new streaming service in time for the spring. The beloved sci-fi thriller, War of the Worlds, battles its way to an April streaming release on the Disney-owned Hulu.
Hulu confirmed that War of the Worlds will debut via its platform on Apr. 1, giving subscribers the chance to catch up with the movie during its 20th anniversary. War of the Worlds' Hulu debut will come a month after the film began streaming for free via Tubi.
Directed by Oscar-winning director Steven Spielberg, War of the Worlds sees Cruise portray Ray Ferrier, a dockworker who must look after his children despite being separated from them; trying to protect them and reunite them with their mother amid an alien invasion causing mass devastation due to the extraterrestrials using huge war machines. Cruise stars alongside Dakota Fanning, who plays Ray's 10-year-old daughter, Rachel,...

In Dan Farah’s The Age of Disclosure, one of the buzziest documentaries to premiere at SXSW this year, it takes interviews with 34 people from all levels of government and military to make the case that we’re not alone in the universe, and that we should all be paranoid about the vast conspiracy keeping civilians from finding out.
In Robert Stone’s Starman, premiering at SXSW to generally less buzz, only one person is interviewed, but he makes his own case for why we’re not alone, using this conviction to reflect on several decades of human progress and the fact that, no matter what else is happening out in the stars, we only have one Earth.
I’m not really valorizing one philosophical mindset over the other, nor exactly stating a preference for one filmmaking approach or the other. I’m just noting that while The Age of Disclosure...

Every movie trailer has a clear job. In a couple of minutes, it needs to convey what a movie's about, show off the famous faces in it, and what viewers can generally expect from the plot. Of course, there are various ways this can go horribly awry. It feels like many trailers these days, especially for high-profile blockbusters, give away far too much of the plot. It's like watching the Cliffnotes version before the film's even in theaters. But at least with that the audience knows what it's getting to a ridiculous degree. However, some trailers don't just hide what the movie's about, and they outright lie to audiences.
This has gotten various studios in trouble over the years. In 2022, fans sued Universal for false advertising with the "Yesterday" trailer, which included scenes starring Ana de Armas, but the actress is nowhere to be found in the film itself. There...

Light & Magic season 2 will continue the Industrial Light & Magic (Ilm) story, when it returns to Disney+ in April 2025. More here.
Appreciating there’s a fair amount of frustration about streaming services around at the moment, there are still some real highlights. For film nerds, I can’t think of too many better shows than Light & Magic, the 2022 documentary series which charted not just the rise of visual effects studio Industrial Light & Magic (Ilm), but in tandem the Star Wars saga, George Lucas, Jurassic Park, Steven Spielberg and more besides.
The series ended in 1993 as Jurassic Park came in, and digital effects began to take over from miniatures and motion control. Now, it’s been revealed that a second season of Light & Magic is arriving next month, which will continue the story through the rest of the 1990s and 2000s.

Steven Spielberg knows a thing or two about sci-fi, especially extraterrestrials in fiction. While such stories about alien encounters often come in varying shades, the most enduring, nostalgia-laden film associated with the genre is Spielberg's "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial." A classic in almost every sense, "E.T." captures the anxieties of childhood along with its wonders, etching a journey about homecoming through the most endearing friendships. On the flip side, we have Spielberg's 1977 "Close Encounters of the Third Kind," a first-contact tale where an everyman's obsessive drive to de-mystify UFOs propels him to choose openness in the face of the unknown. Although "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" is not as heartwarming or fantastical in tone as "E.T.," it wears a Spielberg-ian brand of tender hope that runs through (almost) all of the director's sci-fi undertakings.

In 1975, Universal Pictures released a film that would impact the movie industry forever. Titled Jaws, it was directed by a relatively new filmmaker by the name of Steven Spielberg, who had landed the gig when producers Richard D. Zanuck and David Brown found themselves without a director for the exciting project about the aquatic monster. 50 years later, its legacy remains unquestionable, and TCM, Universal Pictures, and more, plan to throw the 50th birthday bash Jaws deserves.
As reported by Bloody Disgusting, this summer, modern viewers will get the chance to revisit Spielberg's groundbreaking movie. Jaws will return to theaters for the TCM Classic Film Festival in April. However, this won't be the only 50th anniversary presentation, as Universal is planning a nationwide re-release of the movie from Aug. 29 through Sept. 4.

Event Horizon, the 1997 sci-fi horror gem by Paul W.S. Anderson, is finally landing on streaming, and for free. So many things happened when Tom Cruise appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show in 2005.
The audience went wild before Cruise hit the stage, filling Harpo Studios in Chicago with deafening screams, applause and even some tears. When the world’s biggest movie star finally appeared on set to join Winfrey for an interview that altered pop culture forever, he delivered a passionately unhinged performance that found him professing his love for new girlfriend (and future wife) Katie Holmes. He knelt on the floor multiple times, pumped his fists, clenched Winfrey’s hands and ultimately leapt onto the sofa with both feet.
Even Winfrey was caught off guard by the display. “What has happened to you?” she excitedly asked an undeniably giddy Cruise, who, by that point in his career, had been the picture of movie star perfection. Later she admitted, “We’ve never seen you behave this way before.” No one had.

Exclusive: I thought I’d seen it all in trade journalism, but the piranha-like frenzy on Kathleen Kennedy and the successor speculation that followed Matt Belloni’s Puck report that Disney was putting her out to pasture is a new one on me. Belloni for years has been beating on Kennedy like she owes him money, and this week he reported Kennedy was retiring. I recall he essentially did the same thing more than a year ago, and yet here she still is, producing The Mandalorian movie and prepping the Shawn Levy-directed Star Wars film that Ryan Gosling is circling, as well as numerous other film and streaming projects with A-list participants.
Still, the trades followed with gusto, dishing speculative reporting on who might succeed Kennedy. The takeaway was chaos and that Kennedy was being pushed. The reality is different and far more orderly.

Ah, the art of speaking your mind without a filter! Tom Cruise’s 2005 rant against Brooke Shields and her use of antidepressants for postpartum depression was a conversation that stirred up a pot of controversy. Honestly, it wasn’t a friendly chat either.
While some may have thought the Top Gun star went overboard, decades later, as society continues to dissect mental health with a fine-tooth comb, those words seem to be aging like a bottle of vintage wine. What once was a spectacle of tension has become a conversation starter—one that reflects how far we’ve come in understanding mental health and its treatment.

Now in 2025, the past seems to have caught up with Cruise’s claims. Patrick Bet-David, an entrepreneur known for his sharp takes on the mental health and economic landscapes, has thrown his weight behind Cruise’s controversial 2005 position.

Based on the 1898 novel by H.G. Wells, Steven Spielberg’s War of the Worlds takes Wells’ story and puts it in a more modern setting. The film, which starred Tom Cruise, Dakota Fanning and Justin Chatwin as a family trying to escape the destruction of an alien invasion, is a massive blockbuster movie with a lot of heart and plenty of thrills.
War of the Worlds was a box office success, earning over 600 million dollars, and has been certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. The now-classic science fiction movie will soon be coming to streaming as early as next month. The movie is set to start streaming on Hulu on March 1.

Steven Spielbergis a director whose name carries a lot of weight in Hollywood. Whether it's crafting the blockbuster as we know it with Jawsor securing A-list cameos for Casper, Spielberg's influence reaches far and wide. For that very reason, he's managed to work with many talented people and turned out many great movies. Who could forget Tom Cruise's sci-fi collabs with Spielberg, which led to Minority Report and War of the Worlds? Or the career-best performance Liam Neeson delivered in Schindler's List? Yet there's one actor who's never found himself on the set of a Spielberg movie: Jim Carrey, and it isn't for lack of trying. Both Carrey and Spielberg have tried, and ultimately failed, to work with each other on three separate occasions.

Before Captain America: Brave New World, Anthony Mackie battled monsters in the post-apocalyptic film Elevation, which was released in select theaters in 2024. Although critics dismissed the film as another War of the Words knockoff, audiences have grown fond of it, as evidenced by its fresh audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. But now more people can discover the underrated sci-fi flick as it arrives on a new streaming home this month.
Starting Feb. 21, Elevation is now available to stream on Max. The film follows Mackie as a single father in a post-apocalyptic world ravaged by massive, alien-like creatures. Alongside fellow MCU star Morena Baccarin, and Maddie Hasson, the trio venture beyond "The Line," where monsters live on Earth below 8,000 feet. It's part A Quiet Place and War of the Worlds, while finds Elevation finds its own formula that genuinely feels like a fresh addition to the sci-fi action subgenre. As of Feb.

The film will now share the same release date as the Scary Movie reboot, which was announced back in 2024. While plot details for Spielberg's event film are being kept under wraps, filming is reportedly set to begin this month. David Koepp, a longtime collaborator with Spielberg, wrote the script for The Dish. Koepp has previously worked with Spielberg on films such as Jurassic Park and War of the Worlds, with the most recent collaboration being Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

Steven Spielberg is headed back into the science fiction arena with an untitled event movie that’s reportedly centered on UFOs, and Universal has given the project a new release date.
Previously set for May 15, 2026, Spielberg’s next will arrive in theaters on June 12, 2026. Steven Spielberg reteams with screenwriter David Koepp (Jurassic Park) on the film.
Emily Blunt (A Quiet Place) stars alongside Josh O’Connor (Challengers), Colman Domingo (Sing Sing), Colin Firth (The King’s Speech) and Eve Hewson (Bad Sisters).
It’s worth noting that June 12, 2026 is also the current release date for Scary Movie 6, with the Wayans Brothers returning to bring the spoof franchise back to life for Paramount.
Steven Spielberg is of course no stranger to extraterrestrial encounters, directing two of the greatest alien movies of all time: Close Encounters of the Third Kind in 1977 and E.T. in 1982. It’s an arena he returned to in 2005, directing an adaptation of H.

Universal is shifting around the release dates for two major 2026 films, one from Steven Spielberg and another from “Everything Everywhere All at Once” directors Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert.
Spielberg’s next film will open on June 12 instead of May 15. It’s taking the place of the Daniels’ untitled movie, which was taken off the calendar for now.
Universal didn’t offer a reason for the shifts, though the film from the Daniels, as the Oscar winners are known professionally, appeared to be in a nascent stage without a script, title or cast ever being announced. The studio is expected to imminently announce a new date for their movie.
Spielberg’s project, which also doesn’t have a title or logline but has been vividly described as a “new original event film,” was relocated to add distance from two expected behemoths. The untitled film was previously scheduled to open two...

Universal is shifting its untitled Steven Spielberg event film away from “Avengers: Doomsday” and “The Mandalorian and Grogu,” and straight into the “Scary Movie” reboot’s territory. The untitled Spielberg movie was originally set for a May 15, 2026 theatrical release; the film will now wait nearly another month, releasing wide on Friday, June 12, 2026.
The shift is not all about Spielberg, IndieWire has learned. The June slot was previously occupied by another untiled Universal event film, that one directed by Daniels Kwan and Scheinert. The Daniels film is now undated, but a new release date will be announced shortly. It has a script, a person with knowledge of the situation told IndieWire, but needs a little more time. Internally, the Spielberg shift is being looked at as a win-win for both films.
It’s not like there is no competition set for Spielberg’s new date — it’s just now less of a crossover with potential movie-goers.

Colman Domingo, the star of shows like Euphoria and films like The Color Purple and If Beale Street Could Talk, has shared that his role as Victor Strand in the spin-off in The Walking Dead universe,Fear the Walking Dead, changed his entire career.
His role in Fear the Walking Dead was not exactly his first performance on television. Domingo had been featured before in numerous Law & Order episodes, but afterward he mostly stayed on the stage playing several characters in theater adaptations of classics like A Christmas Carol, Henry V and The Taming of the Shrew. In 2015, all that would change.
Domingo was a guest on theHappy Sad Confused podcast, and he recalled being approached with the idea of starring in a TV show and his initial thoughts were, "I was a theater snob. I was like, 'Absolutely not.'" The actor claims that it took a little...

The influence of Hayao Miyazaki is something that can’t be measured through words. His projects have helped the anime industry reach a level of success that competes with some of the greatest movies in Hollywood. In fact, even the biggest directors in Hollywood respect Miyazaki and are inspired by the work he has done in his anime movies.
The best example of this is the widely famous director, Steven Spielberg, who is known for his films like Schindler’s List, Jurassic Park, Saving Private Ryan, War of the Worlds, etc. The American filmmaker has been a big fan of Miyazaki and his films, and he never shied away from expressing how much he loved Miyazaki’s films.
In fact, according to him, the greatest car chase ever in history came from a Miyazaki film. The name of the movie was Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro, and it was Miyazaki’s feature directorial debut.

Netflix is experiencing a series of hits on its platform, with many releases becoming very popular. Since the beginning of the year, three titles have reached Netflix's Most Popular Lists.
One of its surprise hits is the French action thriller Ad Vitam. The series premiered on the platform on Jan. 10, 2025, and has been raking in major views since its release, dominating the non-English charts. The film's ongoing popularity led to Ad Vitam joining Netflix's Most Popular Non-English Movies list, per Tudum.

The limited series is loosely based on a real story.
Ad Vitam joined the list with 56 million views, and 91.5 million hours viewed. The French action thriller's success might not end here because it's close to replacing No. 9 on the list, the 2022 Italian film My Name is Vendetta, which has only 400,000 views more than Ad Vitam.

After leading a mixed career as a dramatic actor, Leslie Nielsen experienced one of the greatest career shifts in Hollywood when he reinvented himself as a comedy star, beginning in 1980's Airplane!. Soon after, the actor took on a variety of roles in some of the funniest movies of the next two decades, from police parodies to superhero spoofs. As a result, he has remained one of the most beloved comedy actors of the era, particularly for his deadpan performances.
While his comedy career had its share of hits and misses, Leslie Nielsen always made sure to be the most memorable part of his projects, even if he didn't have a leading role. Under comedy directors like Jim Abrahams, David & Jerry Zucker and Mel Brooks, Nielsen gave audiences the sillier side of humor. While his films might be seen as too low-brow for some viewers, others continue to embrace what...

Art carries with it a reflection of the world. The media we make, whether the times are turbulent or peaceful, shows us who we are, or were, or what could be, and it's almost always political. Science fiction is even more political by nature, as it draws from big ideas about technology and its applications, or arguments about gender and individuality, or how we treat an alien people we barely understand. These concepts are derided by misinformed individuals as 'woke,' as if cultural and social awareness is some disease, but these individuals also like to act as if 'woke' is some recent phenomena.
Unfortunately, this behavior is generational, as some of science fiction's greatest minds often had to obscure their identity as they were -- gasp! -- female, such as James Tiptree Jr. (Alice Sheldon) or C.J. Cherryh, or numerous people of color, like the Hugo-winning Samuel R. Delany.

Films have been adapting books for decades, long before Stephen King made his debut with Carrie in 1974. However, cinema wasted no time adapting King's first novel and every novel that would come after it. Nobody could have known just how prolific an author King would become, but many of his initial books were hits that had studios salivating to adapt his work. With that came an amazing track record of early King adaptations that continued well into the '90s.
Even after that initial run, every new Stephen King book is bound to get adapted one way or another, and they are all relatively solid adaptations apart from a few. What still remains incredible is the string of directors that have been attached to Stephen King's films. From Cronenberg to Flanagan, A-List directors in each decade seemed to have adapted a King book at one point or another, and some...

With a little under 24 hours to go until the first Jurassic World Rebirth trailer is released, Universal Pictures has just shared another teaser. This time focusing on the characters played by Scarlett Johansson and Mahershala Ali, and they appear to be in a rather precarious situation.
The former plays mercenary Zora Bennet in the movie and, when she recently spoke to Vanity Fair, Johansson described the character as, "A special operative," before adding, "She was in the armed forces for the entirety of her career. She probably worked for a private contractor for some time, and now she's working for herself."
"She’s someone who’s dedicated herself to saving other people, and I think she’s at a professional crossroads. I think she’s burnt out. Of course everything goes wrong, but that’s the fun part."

As anticipation builds for Steven Spielberg's upcoming UFO film, it's an opportune moment to revisit one of his most ambitious yet underappreciated sci-fi projects: the 2002 miniseries Taken. This expansive narrative, written by Leslie Bohem, produced by Spielberg, and featuring a young Dakota Fanning, masterfully intertwines decades of alien lore with deeply human stories. With its unique vision, it delivers a blend of suspense, emotion, terror, heartbreak, and intrigue that remains unparalleled.
Despite its Emmy-winning acclaim, Taken has not maintained the same cultural footprint as some of Spielberg's other alien-themed works. However, its rich storytelling and compelling performances make it a standout as far as alien tales, and science fiction in general. With intricate stories, deep emotional arcs, and some truly haunting scenes that get under your skin, it deserves the same love and appreciation as any other alien tale.

The science fiction genre in cinema is roughly one hundred and twenty-five years old, with Georges Méliès' A Trip to the Moon frequently cited as the film industry's first major work within the genre. While the silent era produced many influential science fiction movies, such as Metropolis, The Lost World, and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, for most of the twentieth century, science fiction movies were predominantly B movies.
That all changed in 1977 when Star Wars lit the box office on fire. Ever since, science fiction has remained arguably the most profitable genre at the box office. Currently, 14 of the 25 highest-grossing movies of all time are science fiction movies. However, despite the immense popularity of the science fiction genre, many iconic sci-fi films continue to fly under the radar and have been forgotten by modern audiences. Each film included in this article has under 100,000 ratings on Letterboxd.
