Titanic (1993)
** (out of 4)
This documentary, narrated by Robert Powell, runs a little less than an hour and tells the story of the famous and now legendary ship. Over the past few weeks I've been watching quite a few documentaries on the ship and this here is one of the most bland and boring. There are several problems with this thing but the biggest is that it really does seem as if Powell is just reading from a book and giving the basic details about the events. We learn about the building, the near crash which most saw as a bad omen, the ice warnings that were ignored, the ship hitting the iceberg, the aftermath and so on. I think everyone is going to know most of the stories told here and since there's nothing new added there just isn't a reason to be entertained. The movie fails at keeping the viewer interesting, which is really hard to believe considering the story being told. Every documentary I've seen at least tells you something new or tells you something you've already known in a different way but that doesn't happen here. I'm not sure what the producers were wanting to do with this but nothing works. If you knew absolutely nothing about the events then perhaps you'd finds the story itself interesting but all others should stay clear and watch one of the better films.
