Anna Maxwell Martin is the latest addition to the cast of the “For All Mankind” spinoff “Star City,” Variety has learned.
Martin joins previously announced cast member Rhys Ifans in the alt-history drama, which was originally announced in April 2024.
As previously reported, the series will tell the story the alternative history of the space race like “For All Mankind,” but this time from the Soviet Union perspective.
The official description for the show describes it as “a propulsive, paranoid thriller that takes us back to the key moment in the alt-history retelling of the space race – when the Soviet Union became the first nation to put a man on the moon. But this time, we explore the story from behind the Iron Curtain, showing the lives of the cosmonauts, the engineers, and the intelligence officers embedded among them in the Soviet space program, and the risks they all took to propel humanity forward.

As many child stars did before her, Anne Hathaway had to grow up on screen to be taken seriously as an actress. After debuting as a Disney princess in the two Princess Diaries films and starring in the fairy tale adaptation Ella Enchanted, Hathaway took roles that would put her in more adult situations. Some of her choices put her front and center, like the independent crime film Havoc or playing famed author Jane Austen in Becoming Jane, but these were not smash hits with critics. She was in acclaimed movies like Brokeback Mountain and The Devil Wears Prada, but in both films, more attention was paid to her co-stars Heath Ledger, Jake Gyllenhaal, Michelle Williams, and Meryl Streep. It wasn't until 2008, after playing the romantic lead for Steve Carell in Get Smart, that Hathaway got a part she could not only sink her teeth into, but audiences would be hard-pressed to ignore her.

“The Long Song” knows what an audience might expect from a period drama airing on the BBC, as it did in the UK in 2018, or under the PBS Masterpiece banner, as it will in the US starting on January 31. The camera, helmed with a steady hand by director Mahalia Belo, pans across still life scenes of porcelain curios and rumpled silks in a manse surrounded by gently swaying palm trees. “The life of a white missus on a Jamaican plantation,” a narrator (Doña Croll) intones, “be surely full of tribulation — from the scarcity of beef to the want of a fashionable hat.” Within seconds, the piercing screech of that “white missus” shatters the idyllic scene, and the acidic streak of sarcasm laden in the narrator’s words comes more clearly into focus. “If that be the story you want to hear, then be on your way. Go,” she says, voice snapping with brittle anger.

The 2008 Academy Awards were the 80th awards ceremony. This ceremony honored films from the previous year in 2007. That year gave fans and critics wonderfully entertaining feature films like, Premonition, Stomp the Yard, Becoming Jane, and The Heartbreak Kid. Of course, none of those films were honored during the award ceremony that year.

The films that were honored and received the biggest nomination of the night for Best Picture were: Michael Clayton, Atonement, No Country For Old Men, There Will Be Blood, and Juno. Looking at this list today, it's clear Academy voters had a certain taste in films that year, which may have enabled them to give nominations to a handful of films that probably didn't deserve it.

Well here we are. April is going to be a fairly sedentary and isolating month for a lot of people. At least we now thankfully have some guidance as to our entertainment options as HBO has released its new streaming releases for April 2020.
HBO’s original series premieres are pretty busy this month. The fourth season of Issa Rae’s excellent comedy Insecure arrives on April 12. That’s preceded by the fascinating docuseries Atlanta’s Missing and Murdered: The Lost Children and followed by book adaptation I Know This Much is True.
On the film side of things there are a few exciting options. Good Boys arrives on April 4, It: Chapter Two on April 11, and Stuber on April 18. Some older movies arriving on April 1 are Team America: World Police, Die Hard, and Slumdog Millionaire.
Here is everything else coming to HBO Now and HBO Go in April 2020 via HBO PR.

Jane Austen has been through a lot on screen in recent years. From watching details of her own life contorted into a romantic comedy framework in “Becoming Jane,” seeing her most enduring masterpiece invaded by the undead in “Pride and Prejudice and Zombies,” or observing the cottage merchandising and tourism industry that has sprung up in her wake in “Austenland,” one longs to imagine the saltine-dry turn of phrase she might have used to describe the splintering and commodification of her own legacy. But barring that, there’s something quite comforting in seeing her work returned to a more natural habitat: adapted into handsome, clever, faithfully unambitious films like Autumn de Wilde’s “Emma.”
As the film’s title card and poster tell us, the proper rendering of de Wilde’s “Emma” is not simply “Emma” but “Emma.” — period and all. It’s unclear why the filmmakers insisted on end punctuation,...

The High Court in Ireland heard this week that a German film company may seek an injunction over plans to make Vikings: Valhalla, Netflix’s recently revealed sequel to hit series Vikings.
Lawyers for Berlin-based W2 Filmproduktion said on Thursday that W2 may seek an injunction as part of its ongoing action against Vikings producers Morgan O’Sullivan and James Flynn of Octagon Films, which is also a producer on the spin-off series.
W2 has alleged the producers have diverted around €40M out of Octagon, of which they are shareholders. The case, which began in 2016, returned to court this week. O’Sullivan and Flynn strongly deny W2’s allegations.
During Thursday’s proceedings, lawyers for W2 told the court the company had only learned about the Vikings spin-off through the media. W2 claims the fees generated from the original series are a central issue in the action and that it fears...

As the gap between great TV and great film narrows, so does the gap between their respective awards organizations. Can a project receive Oscars and Emmys? In some cases, the answer is a resounding “No”: The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences changed its rules after Ezra Edelman’s acclaimed ESPN documentary “O.J.: Made in America” won the 2017 Oscar. If your first instinct upon seeing the title “The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society” is to say, “Well, that’s a mouthful,” rest assured that Mike Newell’s film has you covered, for a secondary character does the very same. Indeed, pretty much everyone in this crumbly oatmeal biscuit of a movie does and says exactly what you’d expect of them: based not on the logic of real life, of course, but the cozy conventions of umpteen twee heritage Britpics before it. For Sunday-afternoon comfort-viewing purposes, it’s no problem that “Guernsey” — which follows the post-wwii escapades of a winsome London writer (Lily James) on the eponymous isle — doesn’t stray from its inevitable course as a town-versus-country love triangle. That it offers no surprises as a nominal wartime mystery, however, is rather more bothersome, particularly as what should be a perky trifle trudges past the two-hour mark.

The love story of Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy has been told again and again onscreen, and each adaptation has in its own way addressed themes of class, social etiquette and romance that Jane Austen wove into the 1813 classic, Pride and Prejudice. But now Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, in theaters Feb. 5, introduces a whole new slew of themes: the undead, for example, and martial arts and lots and lots of blood and gore. The film has Cinderella star Lily James playing Elizabeth, who in this version just happens to be leading a small army of sword-toting society women in...

Every girl deserves a “girls night out” – even the future Queen of England.
A Royal Night Out is a charming, Cinderella in reverse type film that follows one evening in the lives of princesses Elizabeth and Margaret Windsor on V-e Night, May 8th, 1945, respectively played by Sarah Gadon (Maps to the Stars, Dracula Untold, The Amazing Spider-Man 2) and Bel Powley (Variety’s 10 Actors to Watch 2015, The Diary of a Teenage Girl).
Premiering at the 2015 Hamptons International Film Festival, A Royal Night Out will open in New York City and Los Angeles on December 4th, 2015 and additional cities throughout December.
As the whole of London is on the streets to celebrate the official end of World War II in Europe, it is known that the young princesses, aged 19 and 14, slipped out of the palace to join the communal euphoria, returning to Buckingham Palace just after midnight.

As Minnie Goetze, the young cartoonist in the midst of a sexual awakening in Marielle Heller's "The Diary of a Teenage Girl," British breakout Bel Powley wowed audiences at Sundance with her exuberance and intelligence—and it seems she wowed casting directors, too. Powley next stars in "A Royal Night Out," due in New York and Los Angeles Dec. 4. (Check out a making-of featurette below.) The films features Powley and Sarah Gadon ("Maps to the Stars") as princesses Elizabeth and Margaret Windsor, who sneak out of the palace on May 8, 1945 to celebrate the end of World War II in Europe amid the masses thronging in the streets. Directed by Julian Jarrold ("Becoming Jane," "Brideshead Revisted"), the film co-stars Rupert Everett and Emily Watson. ★★☆☆☆ Though its genesis is based in large part on the commemoration of the 70th anniversary of Ve Day, the arrival of A Royal Night Out (2015) has been granted an even higher level of prescience now that Princess Charlotte has been introduced to the royal fold. Directed by Julian Jarrold, whose previous forays into period storytelling include Becoming Jane (2007) and the stodgy Evelyn Waugh adaptation Brideshead Revisited (2008), his latest is an innocuous and overly frothy trifle that heavily coasts on a universal adoration for the monarchy, and little else. Acting as something of an unofficial bookend to 2010's The King's Speech, A Royal Night Out is set on the momentous night of 8 May, 1945.

A bit of House of Windsor fan fiction: cute but slight, though the re-creation of London’s citywide Ve Day celebrations is kind of amazing. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
It is true that on the night of Victory in Europe in 1945, 19-year-old Princess Elizabeth (now the reigning monarch) and her 14-year-old sister, Margaret, did go out into public anonymously to join the citywide celebrations in the streets of London. What they actually did once free of palace constraints isn’t known, and so A Royal Night Out is basically House of Windsor fan fiction, though we can presume that the cajoling that Elizabeth (the always wonderful Sarah Gadon: Dracula Untold) and Margaret (a sweetly cheeky Bel Powley) had to do to convince Mom and Dad — aka Queen Elizabeth (Emily Watson: Testament of...

Director: Julian Jarrold; Screenwriter: Trevor De Silva; Starring: Sarah Gadon, Bel Powley , Emily Watson, Jack Reynor, Rupert Everett; Running time: 97 mins; Certificate: 12A
Her Majesty the Queen may very well be amused by A Royal Night Out, only because it deviates so far from what might plausibly have happened on Ve night, 1945, when she and Princess Margaret celebrated the end of the war in Europe among the commoners on the streets of London. Director Julian Jarrold makes no bones about the fact-less, fancy-freeness of it all, turning a royal anecdote into a screwball comedy of sorts, but where's the punchline?
Up-and-coming Canadian actress Sarah Gadon is a dead ringer for the future monarch "Lilibet" and she imbues her with the requisite youthful whimsy as she yearns to be among the people on this most special night - before the burden of having to rule over them. But Jarrold (Kinky Boots,...
