Children's entertainment has occupied a special place in television since the early Saturday morning cartoons of the 1930s. Beginning with classic Disney and Looney Tunes characters, almost a century later, children's television has earned a reputation for fun, escapist, and wholesome storytelling. Recent decades have also seen the rise of more mature kids' TV series, some of which have maintained the love of audiences well into adulthood.
Kids' shows can range from all-ages cartoon sitcoms to superhero stories, encompassing some of the most iconic franchises in media. Thanks to a combination of quality and nostalgia, many of these series transcend generations and genres, standing out as some of the best shows on television. From its bright, engaging characters to its timeless, enjoyable fun, children's entertainment has something to love for everyone.

Fans of Ultraman: Rising got disappointing news this week. The 2024 Netflix film won’t be getting a sequel anytime soon. Shannon Tindle, who co-directed and co-wrote the movie, broke the news on Twitter/X.
A fan asked if another Ultraman film was coming. Tindle’s response was clear and blunt: “I’d love to make another, but currently, it’s not in the cards. However, I’ve just started working on something I’m very excited about:) More to come…”

Cartoon Network is responsible for some of the best 1990s cartoons period, but the network's reign of dominance didn't end with the turn of a new millennium. The channel had plenty of holdovers from the previous decade, but more excitingly, it introduced plenty of other great animated series for kids of all ages to enjoy.
There were absolutely cartoons that dabbled in standalone episodes where you could tune in any week and know what's going on. Courage had new monsters to face while Johnny Bravo was getting himself into all sorts of ridiculous mishaps. However, Cartoon Network also began dabbling with more long-form storytelling. Kids could also watch "Justice League" and partake in a more serious superhero story about governmental overreach. There was something for every palate whether you wanted silly jokes or more high-octane action.

The 2010s were full of amazing cartoons, but perhaps the biggest surprise of the decade was My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. Directed by Lauren Faust, who worked on shows like Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends, and is married to The Powerpuff Girls creator Craig McCracken, it follows the adventures of brightly colored ponies in Equestria as they learn friendship lessons. Though aimed at younger audiences, the show developed a surprisingly large following of adult viewers, especially men, who called themselves "bronies".

Cartoon Network reboots like Adventure Time movie and Regular Show new series spark interest in potential returns for other beloved shows. Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends, Courage the Cowardly Dog, and The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy are prime candidates for reboots. Series like Codename: Kids Next Door, The Cramp Twins, and Ed, Edd N Eddy also have untapped potential for successful returns.
There have been several major Cartoon Network reboots in recent years that have highlighted other series that should also return. With Adventure Time getting a movie, Regular Show receiving a new series, and a new season of Gumball on the way, this brings to mind the other fantastic shows that Cartoon Network viewers would love to see back on the small screen. While some were lesser-known productions that deserved more attention, other major series also have maintained plenty of reboot potential.

Lonely Amanda Shuffleup imagined her best friend Rudger three months, three weeks, and three days ago. They made a promise to each other that no matter what happens, they'll never disappear, protect each other, and never cry. The two spend their days flying through the sky on the back of a giant sparrow, visiting the chatty squirrel, admiring the ocean whale (that's a whale made of ocean), and trying not to get caught by a giant snow beast when drifting through a winter wonderland.
To Amanda's mother, it's nothing more than imaginative play, but for Amanda and Rudger, each adventure brings a fully realized world to life. Her creative mind makes Rudger a special imaginary friend, one that makes him the target for an evil adult who can see Imaginaries named Mr. Bunting, a Hawaiian shirt-clad creep who physically eats imaginary friends to maintain a connection with his longtime imaginary...

Adult Swim is making my day at the Annecy Animation Festival by announcing two new animation projects with adaptations of Anthony Bourdain‘s Get Jiro! and Jillian Tamaki’s SuperMutant Magic Academy. I’m a massive fan of both books, especially SuperMutant Magic Academy. This news adds to several exciting announcements from Annecy, including green lights for Marvel’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur: Moon Girl’s Lab, the new Regular Show and Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends series, and more.
The adaptation of Anthony Bourdain’s graphic novel, Get Jiro!, hails from Briand Gatewood and Alessandro Tanaka, co-writers of Sharper and producers of NBC’s Superstore. Published by Vertigo, Get Jiro! has the following synopsis:
In a not-too-distant future of food-obsessed L.A., where master chefs rule the town like crime lords and people literally kill for a seat at the best restaurant, Jiro, a renegade and ruthless sushi...

Parenting is hard. Parenting a 20-foot tall, rambunctiously temperamental kaiju toddler speeds right past hard and straight into impossible territory. It’s all the more difficult when you already split your time between saving Japan from an influx of unwanted kaiju visitors as an oversized, super-powered superhero and playing professionally in Japan’s top-level baseball league. In a nutshell, the preceding sentence summarizes the central conflict driving writer-director Shannon Tindale’s (Lost Ollie, Kubo and the Two Strings, Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends) family-oriented CG-animated adventure, Ultraman: Rising. A straight-to-streaming adaptation of Japan’s second biggest, multi-billion-dollar cultural export (Godzilla indisputably rules in that regard), Ultraman: Rising centers on Ken Sato (voiced by Christopher Sean in the English dub), a superstar baseball player who’s returned to his native Japan after a successful stint with the...

Foster's Home For Imaginary Friends is coming back with a new show aimed at a preschool audience. A new Fosters Home for Imaginary Friends show has been announced with a new image featuring Bloo's return, alongside a new cast of characters and a new role for the protagonist. The original series aired on Cartoon Network from 2004 until 2009, featuring the adventures of Mac, his imaginary friend Bloo, and all the other imaginary creatures that are found in the titular Home. Two of Cartoon Network's iconic shows will be returning with brand-new spin-offs. During this year's Annecy International Animation Film Festival, it was revealed that new spin-offs of Regular Show and Foster's Home For Imaginary Friends will enter production soon. These two programs stopped airing on Cartoon Network in 2017 and 2009 respectively. However, it has yet to be revealed when these newly announced spin-offs will hit TV screens.

J.G. Quintel’s new “Regular Show” and Craig McCracken’s “Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends” spin-off both feature in a new production slate from Warner Bros. Animation, Cartoon Network Studios and Hanna-Barbera Studios Europe.
Unveiled Wednesday at Annecy to an appreciative crowd at Annecy’s MIFA market, which greeted multiple shows with whoops of enthusiasm, the two new announcements join a new “Adventure Time” series, “Side Quests,” as greenlights at the Warner-owned companies.
The new slate also boasts two more “Adventure Time” shows in development, plus an unannounced Scooby-Doo project.
The big question raised by the studio’s Annecy focus is whether the surge in new shows is a temporary anomaly or marks a broader indicator of a more sustained return by Warner Bros. Discovery to fuller-on animation production after the lull of the recent past.

Shannon Tindle's directorial debut, Ultraman: Rising, was inspired by the iconic character and developed as an original idea before being incorporated into the franchise. Ultraman: Rising centers on Ken Sato, who must balance being a hero and a sports superstar while protecting a baby kaiju. Both Tindle and co-director John Aoshima, fans of Ultraman, worked closely with Tsuburaya Productions to bring the franchise to a modern and global audience.
After years of working on acclaimed projects in the genre, Shannon Tindle is making his directorial debut with the animated Ultraman: Rising movie. The most charitable read on John Krasinski’s If is that using your imagination shouldn’t be bound by traditional story structure, so why should a film about unfettered imagination need the same? Even then, there’s so much connective tissue missing from scene to scene that it feels less like If is going for abstract vibes than it’s succumbing to a traumatic brain injury, ultimately and awkwardly landing on a moral far too late to have the impact it deserves.

John Krasinski’s new feature, If, finally premiered on May 17, 2024 and audiences around the world are able to experience the movie and form their opinions, as well as share them with others. The movie is a live-action animated fantasy comedy that targets the youngest of viewers, and based on the initial reactions from the audiences, the film has succeeded in doing that. On the other hand, the critics aren’t that impressed, as the official reviews don’t share the enthusiasm of the audiences.
The movie is actually a story about imaginary friends (the If in the title is an acronym), and it features an ensemble cast consisting of Cailey Fleming, Ryan Reynolds, Krasinski, Fiona Shaw, Alan Kim, and Liza Colón-Zayas, along with the voices of Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Louis Gossett Jr., and Steve Carell.
The movie has a solid 84% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, as well as an “A” CinemaScore grade.

The following contains spoilers for If, now playing in theaters
If shares similarities with Foster's Home but excels in transforming its setting through imagination, adding visual power to the film. In If, imaginary friends struggle to connect, unlike Foster's Home For Imaginary Friends where bonds are easily formed with visible friends. If emphasizes reuniting imaginary friends with their creators, while Foster's Home For Imaginary Friends focuses on spreading imagination to new generations.
If shares a lot of elements with a Cartoon Network classic, and it improves on some specific elements of their shared premise. If focuses on the titular IFs, imaginary friends who have found themselves living in a retirement home after their human creators grew up and forgot them. Much of the film highlights the inner lives of the imaginary friends and follows the efforts of Bea to take them somewhere new to call a home outside of the retirement home.

Prior to the debut of "The Powerpuff Girls" in 1998, show creator Craig McCracken had directed a series of tasteless cartoon shorts starring a character named No-Neck Joe. No-Neck Joe appeared regularly at the celebrated annual Spike & Mike Sick and Twisted Festival of Animation, cementing McCracken's underground credentials. The Powerpuff Girls first came into McCracken's repertoire as early as 1992, back when they were called the Whoopass Girls. The juxtaposition between the characters' creepy, ultra-cute, Margaret Keane-like faces and their ultra-violent behavior was the stuff of comedy legend, and McCracken kept the Girls in his back pocket for years.
Throughout the 1990s, McCracken rose in the ranks of the animation world, landing gigs on shows like "2 Stupid Dogs," "Dumb and Dumber," and, most notably, Genndy Tartakovsky's seminal series 1996 "Dexter's Laboratory." Out of all the ways John Krasinski could've followed up his success on the monster horror franchise "A Quiet Place," I don't think anyone foresaw him combining his powers with those of Ryan Reynolds for a high-concept fantasy about imaginary friends. What's more, the marketing for "If" -- a title that has surely already caused no small amount of grief for Seo analysts -- has been somewhat miraculously snark-free. In point of fact, it's hard to watch its trailers without waiting for Reynolds to abruptly knock against the fourth wall or quip about the giant purple creature voiced by Steve Carell. Yet, even in a Super Bowl preview cheekily throwing it back to one of Krasinski's most memorable pranks as Jim on "The Office," the joke is never on the film itself.

John Krasinski's new movie If has similarities to Cartoon Network's Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends. If follows a young girl with the ability to see abandoned imaginary friends. The success of If relies on its ability to offer a fresh take on the concept of imaginary friends.
John Krasinski's new movie If will be arriving in theaters later this year, but the film is raising a few eyebrows at how similar its premise is to the Cartoon Network's Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends. Though the two are different in many ways, they have numerous similarities. But where do they differ, and how much influence has one had over the other?
For decades, we have seen some of Krasinski's best work through writing, directing, producing, and acting. He is a tour de force and seems able to come up with new and intriguing concepts from whole cloth. That being said,...

John Krasinski's next film, titled If, is a fantasy comedy similar to an underrated kids' cartoon show. If follows a young girl who can see imaginary friends and teams up with a neighbor to help abandoned IFs. Although resembling Foster's Home For Imaginary Friends, If has a deeper and layered message, appealing to different generations.
John Krasinski’s next movie is a fantasy comedy titled If, and it's strangely similar to one underrated kids' cartoon show from almost two decades ago. After the success of the horror movies A Quiet Place and A Quiet Place Part II, John Krasinski is moving on in his career as a filmmaker and going back to comedy with his next movie. The project, titled If, is a live-action/animated fantasy comedy also written and co-produced by Krasinski, who is also starring in it in a still unknown role.

In the trailer for John Krasinski’s upcoming film If, the portal to the world of imaginary friends is located behind a secret door in New York’s Coney Island — and Ryan Reynolds has the keys. Did Dwayne Johnson and Ryan Reynolds get wind of Patrick H. Willems' "When Movie Stars Become Brands" video calling them out for prioritizing their business enterprises over their art? Less than 24 hours after the news broke that The Rock is joining forces with A24 and director Ben Safdie to take a break from his typical (which is a polite way of saying "boring") movie roles with the mixed martial arts biopic "The Smashing Machine," the trailer has dropped for "If," an original Reynolds-led fantasy comedy from a bona fide filmmaker.
Ever since "Deadpool" catapulted him onto the A-list, Reynolds has focused less on tackling intriguing projects across a wide range of genres (like he'd done up until that point in his career) and more on cultivating a brand that allows him to act while also promoting his various other professional ventures like his Aviation American Gin line or his stake in Mint Mobile.

Animated kids' shows need likable characters to attract young audiences, but some characters end up being hated due to their negative traits and actions. Characters like Otto Rocket from Rocket Power and Randall from Recess were disliked for their competitive and snitching behavior, respectively. Characters like Bendy from Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends and Sparky from The Fairly OddParents were disliked so much that they never appeared on the show again.
Animated kids’ shows usually have lovable, relatable, and funny characters that younger viewers can identify with and have fun watching, but many shows have included characters that end up being hated by viewers of all ages. Animated shows aimed at children are often lighthearted and with stories that offer a moral lesson, while the purpose of many is to educate their young audience. "What if [X] had emotions?" It's a template Pixar used to massive success with "Toy Story" and has returned to time and time again ever since. It was probably inevitable then that the studio would make a film with the premise, "What if emotions had emotions?" The result was 2015's "Inside Out," and you know what? It's pretty damn great, too.
Pixar's animated hit examines the inner workings of the mind of Riley, an 11-year-old hockey-loving girl whose world is completely upended after her family moves across the U.S. from Minnesota to San Francisco. However, we as viewers get to experience this not just through Riley's eyes but through those of the personified emotions guiding her brain. For a film with such a heady setup, "Inside Out" is as crowd-pleasing as they come, combining rib-cracking laughs and tear-jerking drama with dazzlingly colorful visuals of Riley's inner landscape (like personality traits...

Cartoon characters in television are incredibly diverse, largely thanks to the limitless medium of hand-drawn and computer animation. While there are countless beloved animated characters, others irritate or even disgust viewers. There is a consensus that individuals like Scrappy-Doo from Scooby-Doo, Where are You! are generally a hindrance to their series. But other characters do not deserve the same hate that comes their way.
Protagonists like Dora Marquez from Dora the Explorer offer younger audiences valuable lessons in every episode. Other animated players, like Lisa Simpson from The Simpsons, serve as critical foils to more eccentric and boisterous characters. A show's pivotal dramatic and comedic moments might not be as effective without these individuals in the picture. Ultimately, these characters don't deserve such animosity when their shows would be severely lacking without them.

Fantasy shows are appealing to many people because they explore the realm of impossibility. Terrifying monsters, magical spells, and otherworldly environments can transport audiences into a universe that's one of a kind. But sometimes a series gets a little too weird even for a genre that thrives on make-believe.
When fantasy series take things too far, even fantasy staples like magical creatures can feel random and out of place against their imaginary backdrop. Similarly, some characters make decisions that feel bizarre or unrealistic, taking the story in a peculiar direction. While shows like What We Do in the Shadows use their oddities to their advantage, other fantasy shows are too jumbled and confusing to make any sense.

This August, Cartoon Network's Adult Swim block is further expanding its daily lineup by adding a number of classic Cn shows to its schedule.
Last month, Adult Swim expanded its daily programming by one hour. As broken by Deadline, this move has proven to be such a success that Warner Bros. Discovery is giving Adult Swim another extra hour in two months. More specifically, a new block is set to debut under the Adult Swim banner on Monday, Aug. 28. The block is called "Checkered Past," a reference to Cartoon Network's iconic checkerboard logo. It will consist of classic shows that no longer regularly air on Cartoon Network proper, such as Ed, Edd n Eddy; Dexter's Laboratory; Courage the Cowardly Dog; and The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy. Adult Swim's "Checkered Past" will replace a rotation of current Cartoon Network shows like Teen Titans Go!.

Illumination, the studio behind the “Despicable Me” franchise, has tapped Mike Moon to form a new label, Moonlight. The goal is to broaden the range of films that Illumination makes beyond the kid-friendly fare that’s been its stock in trade.
Moon most recently served as the head of adult animation at Netflix, a post he stepped down from in July to “pursue other opportunities.” His exit came as the streamer, battered by a swooning stock price, was laying off animators and dialing back its ambitions in the space. In addition to his new role as president of Moonlight, the company said that Moon will serve as a senior creative advisor to Illumination. Moonlight’s films will be distributed under Illumination’s distribution partnership with Universal Pictures. The Cartoon Network series "Foster's Home For Imaginary Friends" lasted six seasons on the network, but many fans (myself included) still believe the show ended way too soon. Created by Craig McCraken and running from 2004-2009, "Foster's Home" delivered a magical world where imaginary friends are not only real but a necessary part of life. The show centered on eight-year-old Mac (Sean Marquette) who brings his imaginary friend Bloo (Keith Ferguson) to live at Madame Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends after his mom declares that he's too old for an imaginary friend. While Foster's is typically a boarding house for imaginary friends...

Following the huge success of the Japanese originated “Pokémon” series in the ’90s, we began to see various studios creating shows around creatures with special abilities. We saw “Monster Rancher,” “Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends,” “Lilo & Stitch,” and now “Abby Hatcher.”
The show “Abby Hatcher” is a Canadian computer-animated series about the eponymous character and her best friends — the Fuzzlies, some furry, zany creatures with unique special abilities — who live with Abby at her family’s hotel. The Fuzzlies often get themselves into trouble leaving Abby Hatcher and her favorite Fuzzly-friend, Bozzly, to fix their messes.
The TV show premiered in the United States on Nickelodeon on January 1, 2019. It premiered on TVOKids in Canada on February 11, 2019, and Channel 5’s Milkshake! block in the United Kingdom on Mar. 2, 2020.
“Abby Hatcher” is created by Rob Hoegee and produced by Guru Studio and Spin Master Entertainment, the producers of the popular “Paw Patrol” series.

This feature contains some spoilers for Netflix’s Kid Cosmic.
After exploring the stretches of space, wonder, and imagination in shows like Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends and Wander Over Yonder, Craig McCracken returns to the realm of superheroes with Kid Cosmic, a more direct, comic book-esque take on the genre than his first smash hit show, The Powerpuff Girls.
