'Turtles' nabs Gold Shell at San Sebastian
MADRID -- Bahman Ghobadi's Turtles Can Fly won the 52nd San Sebastian International Film Festival's top honor, the Gold Shell, on Saturday night with an unflinching look at the fear of children surviving on the Iranian-Turkish border. "It impressed all the members of the jury that a film that tells this story was charged with such humanity, poetry and, at times, even humor," jury chairman Mario Vargas Llosa said. Jeff Bridges received his Donostia Lifetime Achievement award at the gala ceremony, broadcast live on Spain's Canal Plus. China's Xu Jinglei won the best director Silver Shell for her A Letter From an Unknown Woman, an adaptation of Stefan Zweig's novel, in an awards ceremony that met the rare approval of local press -- prone to criticize jury decisions -- despite the fact that no Spanish-language film was selected for the main honors.
